    I’m totally with Andy on this one. Yeah, they could enjoy that one night. But the overarching feeling throughout the song is one of great loneliness, even emptiness. They are two ships passing in the night who can give a little comfort to each another for a brief while. DAMN. So sad

      The word I associate with so many of Bob Seger's music is "wistful". It means regretful longing.
      "Against the Wind". "Like a Rock" "Beautiful Loser", "Night Moves" or "Fire Lake". So many of Seger's songs make me reflect on what was, and sadly, isn't anymore.

    I know it's late
    I know you're weary
    And I know your plans don't include me
    Still, here we are, both of us lonely
    Longing for shelter from all that we see
    Why should we worry? No one will care girl
    Look at the stars now, so far away
    We've got tonight
    Who needs tomorrow?
    We've got tonight, babe
    Why don't you stay?
    To me, it's clear that this is a one-time thing between 2 people struggling.

      @@clementsfamily7002 - except it totally ignores the “let’s take a chance, let’s find a way”…that is totally about the hope/possibility that it could be more…no way to know unless they take a chance…maybe it goes nowhere…but it certainly is going nowhere if they don’t take the chance.

    • @helenespaulding7562
      @helenespaulding7562 Місяць тому +3

      It just occurred to me that the idea of “shelter” from the storms of life is a recurring theme in music. Off the top of my head, I thought of “Gimme Shelter” by The Stones, and “Shelter from the Storm” by Bob Dylan

    • @Sparks_Alive
      @Sparks_Alive Місяць тому +4

      @@ChicagoDB I took that to mean let’s take a chance. Let’s find a way to try to find even temporary pleasure or happiness. Let’s just do something now. Even if there’s no promise of anything more afterwards.

    • @ChicagoDB
      @ChicagoDB Місяць тому +3

      @@Sparks_Alive that is the general take that most do get from the song. But there is really nothing uncommon, especially in that period of songs being about “hooking up”…and Bob was going much deeper…and he produced a masterpiece…
      He wasn’t trying to write a beautiful poetic song about a casual hookup or even just “2 ships passing in the night”.
      His song was essentially about lonely people taking a chance…because that is the only way to find more.
      I’ll try to find one of the interviews in which he discusses the song. Bob is such an incredible artist…his songs all tend to have deeper meanings…even the “fun” ones 🙂

Next verse, "I've been so lonely, All of my hopes fading away, I've longed for love like everyone else does, I know I'll keep searching after today..." He's just looking not to be lonely for one lousy night. I think we can all relate.

    Sad but beautiful. This is one of those great Love songs from Rock 'n Roll. - Love Bob
    Seger 🧡🍂
    [No Alex, it's not about enlightenment making you feel better. Having that one night is a sliver of something and some people will have to go that route but for those not going that way, it's sad. But let each person choose.) I think of plenty of broken people who have to live that way - can't feel much of anything but want it so badly, like everyone else does. But they, for whatever reason, only have that night (as they come along).

    Goosebumps, to me this is a soul crossing of 2 people. Make the best of right now, don't think about anything else. And that night will be a memory only they will have. They gave each other comfort, peace and hope. I also think about a musician on the road all the time, it gets lonely and they meet so many beautiful people along the way. People that won't be in their life except for one night.

    Loved both sides! You guys are amazing, to hear both of your prospects on the same song is incredible. Bob doesn't miss, ever! I agree w/ both sides! I'm being so bilateral on this! Grrrr I've heard & grew up listening this song 🎵 I always thought is was a love song w/ no repercussions. 🎵 Never thinking about what happens tomorrow. Alright, I could go on & on. Thanks for both of your reactions! Love, peace & happiness, always! 🫶🏼✌🏼👏🏼

    It's a deceptively complex song . the two lonely people, during, what was meant to be just a one night stand, recognise that they have more connection than they first realised .
    And all the possibilities that might imply..
    Absolute magic song

    When I read the tagline to this video I thought "the most we've disagreed!" meant one of you loved the song and the other hated it and I was going to be heartbroken to see which of you hated one of my favorites songs ever. Was going to change my opinion of one of you for good, LOL. Glad that was not the disagreement! 😌

    This song was inspired by a scene The Sting, where Robert Redford's character, new in town and all alone, invites the seemingly lonely waitress over for the evening. Amazing song that captures that feeling of seeking just a simple temporary cure for loneliness.

    In the early 80's this was just the way it was for a lot of people. I prefer to call it a time of Free Love. Like it or not, both had to agree with the situation. Wish I could relive those days again.

    That's the beauty of this song, it cuts both ways. It brings out different feelings in each person, and those feelings are fluid throughout the song. One of the best songs Bob Seger has ever performed.

    It's a time in life you are searching for something/someone and you encounter it knowing this isn't IT but it is worth exploring. Afterwards, maybe later in life when you have attained what IT is, you can look back on this explored encounter and get a feeling of fondness and melancholy and be happy this happened!
