Being a giants fan that's the last team I wanted to see him go to but I'm really happy for him because he is unlike any other player that has ever played the game.
Three things on this deal: 1. Ohtani was signing with the Dodgers all along. The only question was the number 2. Ohtani didn't sign with them for any other reason than money. If he just wanted to win, why did he need $700M to sign? 3. His agent did a great job, lying to the other teams, using them only to pump up that price
There are deferments. He did that to keep the yearly salary lower to sign other players each year. Dodgers have the most wins (662) since 2017. 31 more than any other team. So yes it was about money and wins.
He did just want to win. The present value of this contract is much lower than $700M considering the amount being deferred. This contract looks like it was made to allow the Dodgers to grab more players in this offseason.
Ohtani is going to the only team with a Japanese-American manager. Dave Roberts' mom is from Japan. I don't know if Dave speaks much Japanese, but he should get on the phone with her to work on his language skills. I'm sure Shohei will still have his translator, but that has to increase his comfort level.
I read somewhere (not sure how accurate it is) that the going fair market value is about $8 million per WAR. So for those into stats, that's $70 million a season, which is about 8.75 WAR a season, 87.5 WAR for the next 10 years. Also remember that a large portion of his money is deferred, bringing the current present value down. Add to that his off the field value. The contract might be as crazy as it first sounds.
Maybe he will give up some money to let the Dodgers get another important player. Who needs $700 million? Not Ohtani. After his first pro contract, he gave the money to his mother and she put him on a couple thousand dollars a month budget, but he still did not spend it all. He didn't even have a drivers license back then because he was always at the facility working out and didn't need a car. He eats, sleep and breathes baseball.

After i saw what happened with the highest payroll teams last season i don't know if that contract make sense
You make the most sense in this dillusional thread. Thank you for actually watching.
@@hulkhogan4123you're spreading negativity all over this comment section huh?
He’ll never live up to contract. Dodgers will regret giving one player $70,000,000 a year.
A asset management team is needed 🇨🇦🇺🇸😁
We know Yamamoto is on his way to the Dodgers too with Ohtani’s deferred contract!!!
I'm hoping then I'll be Happy but if we don't get any of those pitchers that are available I'll be sick
How much for a trophy.? Yay! We win. 😒
Let's GO!!! Congrats Dodgers. Time to get an Ohtani jersey.
Because he wants to win?? Give me a break I can think of about 250 million reasons more than even Patrick Mahomes made that tell me he signed there for a very large, very green reason and that’s it. If he wanted to win. He could’ve gone to Texas or a number of other places. He went to the team that offered the most money. If someone else was offering $800 mil he would’ve signed there.
They win? They haven’t won a real World Series in decades but if you count the Bubble Trophy they have the same amount as the Jays over the past 30 years.
they just won a workd series 2 years ago. LOL
I’m not a dodgers fan in the slightest but you have to count the 2020 series win. The regular season being shortened is a moot point. They won it under the conditions that all the teams were subjected too. It is what it is.
@@eyebeebak I realize math isn't your strength but winning after playing a 60 game season is not exactly the marathon accomplishment the real World Series actually entails.
@@The-CoffeeMan Win in October after playing for 6 months then I'll consider you a true champion because winning in a vacuum should be treated as such. They played more games prior to the '94 strike yet never declared a champion, so playing 60 games then holding the playoffs is a joke. It is a 1/3 of a World Series because that is how much effort was required to win
@@adellis24they win more than the angels? And have also made the playoffs for an entire decade straight. Oh and also have like 4 straight 100 win seasons.
The pressure to win has never been higher for the Dodgers
Jeff Passan, you must be proud of this "basically like a high school hitter" guy who just inked the biggest contract ever right? 😂
You godamn right! The yellow man gets the highest paid sports contract in history!! Asian Athletes for the win!!
HATERS START TALKING ABOUT RISKS. NAH. JERSEY SALES, SOUVENIRS, EVERY GAME TICKETS, COMMERCIALS/ FOOD OR WHATEVER ENDORSEMENTS WILL GET THAT MONEY BACK BEFORE 5 YEARS. WELL DESERVED. I KNOW TROUT AND JUDGE HAD SOME GOOD CONTRACTS BEFORE BUT THIS DUDE IS A UNICORN.
EVERYTHING THAT HE BRINGS TO THE GAME WILL PAY THE CONTRACT EASILY!!
Good for MLB,big money will come in❤
A great DH and a good pitcher when he's healthy. Probably not worth the money as a player, but likely worth it for marketing.
_"It's time for Dodger baseball!"_
And he's worth every single penny, too. He's the first two-way baseball player of worth since Babe Ruth. And since the National League has just recently adopted the DH, he can fill that spot when he's not pitching. He's also a great defensive player, but the Dodgers may want to keep him more as a DH, as lately he has been injured. So they'll probably want to make sure their investment is protected.
And he doesn't even have to move out of his house.
And the best part is, the Dodgers beat the Yankees _again!_ 😝
Not worth every penny. The fact a person can even get that amount to play baseball just shows how broken our society is.
@@icomment7715it can show our society is broken while still being worth every penny to the dodgers
No, he isn't, and neither is anyone else.
Reminds me of the 10 year mega deal the Angels gave Pujols. Wont end well
Are you really trying to compare Ohtani to Pujols..??
@@oscaru5342 if you have to ask that question you’re obviously too young to remember the the 2011 trade value of Albert Pujols
I agree! These 10 year deals are risky. Ask the Angels about Albert and the Yankees about ARod
Pujols sucked cuz he couldn’t run anymore. Ohtani is one of the fastest players in the game. He also pitches. And is several years younger than Albert when he signed. Stupid comparison.
@@ted6580 also too young. Stick to Minecraft junior
Everyone saying it was a bad deal the guy accepted the incentive based contract so give us room to get players
Why the Dodgers? $700 million dollars. Enough said.
BOOYAKASHA let’s go dodgers 👏 👏, 👏 👏 👏
Deferred salary too, for the roster, what a champ, this guy.
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
As a Braves fan, I am worried about this one. But the playoffs in MLB seem just up in the air anyway, just like this season.
He’s a generational player he’s like the next Babe Ruth.
Bro, do u watch? He's been 6yrs + in Japan. Late to the party. Dodgers got duped.
Babe Ruth was hitting more home runs than entire teams. Career OPS 1.164! Find a different comp; there was only one Babe Ruth.
@@hulkhogan4123do you even watch baseball? lol
@@dantedepiro5677 Babe Ruth was playing against a bunch of fat white dudes, Daniel Tosh has a great joke about this from like over a decade ago let’s see how much pointing he would’ve done with somebody like CC Sabathia throwing him 90 mile an hour sliders 🤣🤣
@@hulkhogan4123how
This man is about to get a world series trophy
Everytime someone signs we get messages like this 😂😂😂. For all you know he could throw one pitch and blow his arm out again
You are Nostradamus
Ohtani and Purdy had the same surgeon. The dude is legit lol.
No one is worth that kind of money.
I wish him the best. I do. I live in MN and as a Twins fan, I have experienced when we get big players like Joe Mauer and Carlos Correa to name two. They come in with a great attitude and a crazy contract comes into play and...... Nothing. I do hope to see Ohatani in a World Series cause one, he definitely deserves it but two, for that kind of money, you better single handedly win the World Series. That is money that would easily build an all around solid team and I'll never understand the one sided player pay. Game on. All eyes will be on Shohei Ohatani but I guess that's the point.
I like Jeff Passen, just based on the fact that he has Enter the Wu-Tang, Rage against the Machine, and a Nintendo.
Glad to see Ohtani join the Dodgers!
i think if the jays went this crazy for him they should have offered judge 500 mil for 10 years last year
Shohei deserves the $700 million. Don't think money is that important to Shohei. Dodgers may give him a chance to win the series. Being in LA helps, I guess.
His desire to win drove him there? Really, not the insane $70 mil per season? These owners are a joke
All these beat reporters rushing him to make a decision was such an awful thing to do. Nobody rushed Machado or Harper when they signed in February. All athletes should do what Shohei did today and announce their decision through their socials
They were Boras clients that were over valued and held out until teams got desperate. Harper is great, but Machado fleeced the Padres.
@@CalebWilliams2030that’s because machado is the padres he was the first one they signed from the new crop and he signed when the team had no other big signings he commuted to the organization and now they’re paying him back
Ohtani became the highest paid athlete(before counting the endorsement) in professional sports.
$700 for an injured 29 year-old with 2 Tommy John surgeries?
That same "injured 29 year-old with 2 Tommy John surgeries" put up baseball's first ever 50/50 season and became a World Series champion
I am not sure whether shohei will get the champion or not but I am sure that his English will get better after 10 more years 😂
I shock that NYY and BR didn't break their bank for him.
Ill take soto and bellinger over him anyday
Passan looks in decent health for a guy who had a tree fall on him. Good to see that
Love that Wu-Tang freshman album on vinyl.
Apparently want Yamamoto and Burns.
Wow. This contract may finally kill baseball for good.
Go Dodgers!!!💙💙💙
45-50 mil a year. They still have money to go get an elite arm. Plus whoever sponsors the dodgers will be one of the biggest deals ever too.
did you fail math,it is 70 million dollars a year.
@@randolphdefreese7874 did you not watch the video and hear what he said??? Smh
..as a Jays fan..losing Shohei bites..but realizing he will demand $ 100.000 per at bat for 10 years..walk, hit, strikeout or hit by pitch..100 large..way too much..
He knew he couldn't win with the Angels
no one can…. terrible organization
Trout proves that. They wasted his prime. Now he’s an aging superstar on a big contract. He deserves to play in a World Series .
This sounds good now but this deal will blow up in the dodgers face
Nope, the deal sounds low now. He should've asked for more lol.
This deal is gonna what now? Can you repeat what you just said?
