    With the likes of LeBron, Messi, and Ronaldo reaching the end of their careers Ohtani really does have a shot to be the biggest face in sports because people who don’t even care about baseball want to watch Ohtani play because of how unique of player he is. People often say it's an overpayment, but when you consider all the off-the-field revenue, it's like you're paying for the support of an entire country like Japan, if not all of Asia. It's not just fans in Japan; he's an Asian athlete at the pinnacle of a major American sport, which is unprecedented. So, it's more than just Japan; he's the most marketable Asian athlete in the history of sports. He's worth more than any American athlete because of his international appeal.

Dodgers have no endorsement rights in Japan...

      @@FoxxyBrown1111you have no idea what you’re talking about lmao, Japan has one of the biggest economies in the world, and like the commenter said, it’s a big part of Asia we’re talking about and not just Japan. I’m sorry but no one cares about Africa, African countries don’t watch much baseball anyways, and lets be real, there’s not much $ to be made from consumers there. When has a single business ever said, “oh you know guys, we really need to penetrate the African market” 😂 None, cuz there’s almost nothing to be made there compared to other continents (well maybe charities to solicit donations lol).
      Saying Noah Lyles is more famous is crazy lol. Even if he is right now (which he isn’t), Lyles plays a sport that is only relevant every four years. shohei is going to be playing basically multiple times a week, for one of the biggest teams in the league. You’re making a huge error in evaluating his level of stardom RIGHT NOW instead of his POTENTIAL fame. He is the current face of baseball despite being on a small market team that never made the playoffs, and plus Ohtani really only became a household name for the past 3 seasons now. You put him on a team like the Dodgers, he makes and wins some World Series, and you’ll see how wrong you are.

    • @FoxxyBrown1111
      @FoxxyBrown1111 8 місяців тому +1

      Ok, I bite Mr LMAO.
      1) Again, Japan doesnt count as INTERNATIONAL appeal. Its ONE country. Again the news for you: The Dodgers gain zero, yes zero coins of any business Ohtani does there (mostly endorsment deals).
      They certainly sell many overpriced Made-in-China game shirts there as in the USA, but after about two years the market will be mature. On a ten year scale its a negative balance (700 mio vs the short term profitable shirts business).
      I only brought up Africa to underline the "international" argument as plain crap. No more, no less. I give you Europe: Same same, no one cares, no one knows Ohtani.
      2) Yes Lyles is more famous. Other than in the USA, track is pretty popular around the world. Especially in JAPAN. Not only Olympics, but worlds and track meets too.
      3) Everybody in the USA or Japan knows Ohtani by now. To play for the Dodgers doesnt change a thing. Its completely uncertain if the Dodgers win a WS with him, leave alone multiple. Pitching trumps batting. Always was, always will be. Thats another reason why TWO superstars couldnt turn the Angels into a winning team.
      There is no potential fame, Ohtani already is at the peak of fame. From now on (most likely as a one way player) it goes downwards. In two or three years the next big thingy will be hyped by MSM... By then, max 5 WAR Ohtani will be just another guy of a dozen stars known to baseball fans only. It all will end up like the Cabrera, Rodriguez or Pujols monster contracts. No championships, but a big fat minus in the books.
      Check facts next time before trying to lecture somebody in a arrogant way. Fanboism and worshipping do not change reality.

They want that cash now and understandably so. But in that 28-32 age range, it could see a totally new strategy….. even if only for a handful of teams or a handful of players (both of whom want to be there deep into October). With the entire japanese market now wanting to watch dodgers games, ads behind homeplate (go watch any angels game, especially ones ohtani pitches), jersey sales, extra ticket sales, extra parking, extra food, and any other way teams make money off a player. Ohtani will make the dodgers 5x what ANY OTHER player in the entire MLB could at minimum. And that doesn't even cover his on the field worth. This is a great example of a bidding war that got carried away so the "winner" lost. Othani was going to have a hard time doing enough for 10 years to justify a $50 million AAV. $70 million is just stupid and careless. I mean good for him, no hate to Othani HE did the right thing. But the guy is a pitcher having his second TJ on the wrong side of 30 who puts more strain on himself than any other player in the game and who has been doing it at a professional level for going on 12 years. He's already out as a pitcher for '24 so your paying 70 Mil for a DH, and IF he can even come back to pitching at a top tier level at all, he's not going to be able to keep it up more than 3 maybe 4 years tops and that's an optimistic guess because remember other pitchers his age with his injury history don't also have to work on keeping their swing and base running in good form. So if the Dodgers are lucky they get MAYBE 4 years of paying more money than Ronald Acuña Jr and Gerret Cole make combined for an ace pitcher/ great DH and 6 more than of paying that for a great DH (still a terrible deal) and God forbid his swing starts to fade in his late 30s you may be paying $70 mil a year for an average DH by the time all is said and done. There's just no way to make this a GOOD deal for the Dodgers, because even if he never loses a step and stays a great pitcher and hitter all the way to the age of 40 (which isn't happening) you STILL could have gotten 2 ace pitchers at that price, or the best pitcher and DH available for probably $10 million a year less. As far as "making the money back" that could MAYBE work for a small market team with tickets to sell, but there's not a ton of tickets available for LA Dodgers games anyway, and 80% is their annual revenue is TV deals, and gate. Which Othani can do little to improve. You think he's going to sell $200 million worth of jerseys? Let alone $700 million. Nope. This deal had 2 winners, Othani and whoever represents him. To be clear I want to say again no hate to Othani, he did exactly what I, and anyone else would have done. My criticism is of the Dodgers GM who obviously decided they HAD to have him even once the price got so high it no longer made sense. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the league's craftier GMs just kept a bidding war up to get the Dodgers to absurdly overpay and effectively cripple themselves in the FA market for years to come.
