Fished on the San Diego Thursday and rented a rod, crew rigged me up with this setup on 130# leader. Leader and main line was tied to ring. Landed 90lb. Bluefin. Thank you Captain Ryan and crew!
Love that West coast bass fishing and finesse anglers have applied something new and valuable to the offshore heavy tackle community. Drop shot FTW! Great tips!
Interesting. Will try on our 2.5 this weekend. We use rubber band inline sinker rig. But we only fish 6-7 people we drop carefully rarely tangle. But in combat fishing I could see this being effective. We use very weak rubber bands and it’s rare to have a sinker with fish usually clears. Thanks for great content! Best of luck out there!
Sounds very dangerous to the crew and yourself when the fish get's hauled over the rail, having another hook on the end of the line possibly whipping around.
If this is working and the sardine doesn't need to be free to swim around, it does raise the question of using a more traditional drop-shot rig. Might experiment with one on next week's trip.n. Perhaps 2-3 sardines on droppers too short to tangle, with a knife jig dragging the whole thing down....
The other advantage to this. If on the rubberband above the hook, especially at night, when you get close to gaff the decky has to cut off the sinker, if its too far away from the hook. This eliminates that.
I noticed he said to tie the weight to the ring and the main line to the hook eye. Why not just tie the main line to the ring also? Does this make a difference in how this rig fishes?
Hey Paul. You are very wise my friend. We had some anglers try exactly what you’re talking about and it worked just fine. Thank you for sharing and being part of the Friedman Adventures family.
Good question. Check out the orientation of the hook. If you tie both lines to same ring, the hook point goes "up and down." This is what we did the other day and it caught fish, but the crew recommended chin hooking the sardine in that case (up through the bottom of the chin). Doing it the way they show in this video "turns" the hook and then you just do a typical nose hook on the bait.
@@alextomasevic did you jig this set up or just let it hang? You can't let it run since the bait is stuck directly to the line. Just drop and retrieve slowly?
Why not tie the main line plus the sinker line to the same ring, it will keep the hook a little more free to swing. You can also put a rubber band on the end of the sinker line if you're afraid of the added weight when fighting the fish. Most of the time, the sinker will fall off during the fight.
As Tunadoctor Wong notes, you'll get the hook facing up by tying both knots to same ring. We did it that way the other day and then hooked the bait up through bottom of the chin
Hey Tony. The baby is still moving around like a big fish work. But I get what you are saying my friend. Thanks for visiting and thanks for leaving your gray comment.
I don’t see this as a revolutionary rigging. Drop shot style with the hook in line with the leader does not offer the bait any free swimming natural motion. Not much difference than a sinker rig with the bait foul wrapped around the main line above the sinker. The best rigging is a dropper loop if you have time to tie it, but in a quick switch for deep drop, the sinker rig is the fastest way to go.
This is tied incorrectly. The main line is suppose to go to the topside of the ring , then the hook, then the drop shot line. This has the hook pointing up, then you hook the sardine from the bottom up. Lol…..

How much is it to rent a rod n reel for a day?

Change your bait!
I love how drop shot is making its way to all sorts of fishing.
Pretty crazy, right Dan?

Thank you so much
Great information. Certainly used it and worked for us over the weekend on 100lb and 4/0 ringed circles
Thank you so much David. So happy it worked for you.
How did you hook the bait and what size bait?
Sage advice! Thanks Sam! Going to try the ringed sinker setup
Best of luck with that

Good day, Sam. Which size/brand "ringed circle hook" is recommended for an 80# and 100# setup? Thanks.
What’s the difference between this and a rock fish setup with dropper loops? Also how does the bait swim around being tethered to a straight line?
Man this is a helpful video!
Thank you so much Nick
Great rig! What if you put a hook on the bottom sinker with a split ring to snag into the fish so that sinker won't swing when reeling it in?
Worth thinking about for sure
More than likely you would run a thinner mono for the weight leader then once hooked up that sinker would break off.
Sounds very dangerous to the crew and yourself when the fish get's hauled over the rail, having another hook on the end of the line possibly whipping around.
I’m gonna try that 👍👍
Best of luck, my friend.
Do you leave the reel in free spool?
Let the fish run or lock in?

Please let us know how that works for you
Rock fish style tuna fishing lol 🔥😂
So did this work?
maybe Not…
Can it tangled up with others fishermen lines with the singer still on?
Couldn't you tie the hook on the line with a Palomar knot and leave a long tag end for the weight?
That sounds like it would work just fine
this should work great with chunking/non-swimming bait. Gonna have two set ups, 1 rubber band and 1 drop shot next year to see how both work
Absolutely
Will the live bait be able to move naturally and attract a bite with this rig?
From everyone we have talked to it seems to be working really really well.
Nice technique for deep fish! Gracias 🙏🏽 mil veses
Good info
De nada Iban. Thank you for your great support hermano
Great advice!!!
Thank you Jeff
How do you hook the bait fish nose hook?
I have some 500 lb 3 way swivels, i wonder if those would be useful
Nope major wrap up been there
Do you just use floral from torpedo to the hook? Is the main line mano?
Good morning my friend. Fluorocarbon will work great
What kind of hook method works best for this? Nose hook, butt hook, gill hook?
Good morning Bryan. Nose hooked bail looks more natural
Is this getting bit better or is it just a way to avoid tangles for those who drop their baits too fast?
Both and it gets you down to the fish faster
Good info I usually hate using the rubber band sinker or dropper loop because of tangles… especially in combat fishing on sport boats

100%. Thanks for sharing that.
does it have to be Ringed Circle hook or Ringed Offshore fine?
I’m thinking it’s fine but I’ll defer to Sam de La Torre
So is it fluorocarbon to the hook or mono ? I know it's fluorocarbon to the weight
Fluorocarbon to the hook for sure.
If using 100# plus FC, I am assuming you are you crimping the line to the hook? Just going by the old rule-of-thumb of anything over 100#, crimp.
I think that is probably a good way to do it Jesse. Thanks for making Friedman Adventures so much better.

do you all think this would work with a flat fall lure at the bottom inplace of a sinker?
Do you still use flouracarbon leader?
I think it’s a good idea if only for the abrasive resistance quality of fluorocarbon.
Very good idea, but I would like to see hook designed so the hook is facing up

So bait is not swimming, it’s just static on hook? Is that a factor? I guess not if people are catching’em…

For sure. All the reports we have received are 100% positive.. Thanks for watching and we will keep reporting to you.
So where’s the report?
Instead of tying the extra line to the sinker tied to the rubber band first and then to the sinker with the rubber band
Food for thought
why use rubber sinker method? Why not connect the sinker direct to the line instead? thanks
Not a bait fisherman but if both lines were tied to the ring, then the hook would be facing up.
