chester Thompson has got to be the most underrated drum pounding sweet sounding kit monster out there. Not just cause he played with genesis and phil Collins solo but just as a player with his style alone should put him in top 5 alltime...chester I wish I could meet you and tell you that in person : ))
Chester is the MAN...one of the unsung heroes of the industry!!! The kit is a beautiful one, no doubt...but it takes a true master to bring them to life.
when all of a sudden this video shows chester thompson when he was still frank zappa's drummer (the one size fits all + roxy & elsewhere albums) and also him with weather report (the legendary black market album with jaco pastorius!). then you'll instantly realize that chester thompson might be very humble, but is a true drumming legend of the highest caliber! all of his work is so tasteful and that drumsolo on the roxy & elsewhere album from frank zappa is classic stuff. chester thompson's drumming on that roxy & elsewhere album actually was what made phil collins ask him to join genesis.
Chester seems like one of the finest persons on earth. Unfortunately I only saw him three times live (1983 Frankfurt Musik Messe clinic on pearl drums), 2004 with Phil C. and 2007 with Genesis. I love how he plays all those killer licks which really "talk", with such a precision, while maintaining a low profile, making it look so effortless. Even if he would call it quits now. No problem: the man deserves it. He gave us so much! May sound cheezy, but anyway: Thanks for everything Chester!
Went to school w/ his son in the early 80's. He said,"My dad is the drummer for Genesis." I said,"You lie, Phil Collins is the drummer for Genesis." What did I know at 14 yrs. old.
"A Joyful Noise" is a nice enough album, pleasant, etc,. but MAN I would love Chester to put together a killer Quartet (perhaps... James Carter on saxes, Robert Hurst on bass viol, Craig Taborn on piano..?) and do a straight ahead jamming jazz session before he gets too old. Come on, man! We need it!
not famous? perhaps to the uninformed...he was playing with Zappa way back in the 70's along with Ralph Humphries (you have heard of him? he has a masters degree) Check out Zappa "Live at the Roxy and Elsewhere" he was awesome way back then... toured with Genesis and Phil's solo band, etc. The guy is highly skilled, and bears listening to...
Talk about being misquoted twice !!!! Man, I feel for you :) Give the guy a BREAK - and learn to read and understand ENGLISH before you start swearing or misquoting him...
