Fun fact about the hysterectomy line: It wasn't in the original script. The (male) writer wrote the "that time of the month" joke in, and both lead actresses and the (female) director were so annoyed about it that they almost cut it altogether but instead Florence improvised the sarcastic response. The director did an interview saying “It’s like, if you’re gonna make that joke, I’m gonna unleash Florence Pugh on you. She’s gonna Yelena you," which is just (chefs kiss) perfection.
That's great. One of my favorite parts of the movie and honestly a great way of showing how Yelena handled that trauma as opposed to Natasha
The original script had Yelena never having any kind of reconciliation with her parents, until David Harbour himself had the idea that Alexei could prove he really did care about her by remembering her favorite song. The filmmakers loved the idea so much that they sprang for the rights to use American Pie, and added it to the opening sequence (so if it feels kind of awkwardly shoved in, that's why).

Don't worry Nikki that first opening sequence broke me, it is by far the darkest and most emotional opening of an MCU movie so far and the music just intensified it.
Right up there with Infinity War's opening sequence for sure.
Iron Man’s shrapnel removal in the first Iron Man was brutal, but Black Widow’s opening was far more intense.
They should've put her backstory on Netflix that way we can get the nitty gritty of what they did to her, Yelena & the other widows as they grew up her time with the Winter Soldier, Wolverine until Natasha defects to Shield & the Avengers. That would've been awesome here they water down her dark past.

The opening when Natasha defends her little sister and through the rest of the credits with all the little girls being taken had me straight up bawling my eyes out. I didn't see me reacting that way but it was just so sad to see how Natasha's life was uprooted and those other little girls going through hell especially since this kind of thing (human trafficking) is real. I was ugly crying and had to stop the movie for like 5 minutes to get myself under control.

Coldest lines in this movie is Draykov describing girls are a garbage to be recycled.
It made all of her sacrifices even more significant.
Same that opening with all the children just had me bawling I just get so triggered when it comes to children.

I agree with you about the movie's timing. This movie should have come out after Civil War but before Infinity War and Endgame. Yelena is a great addition to the MCU.

You would have lost Florence Pugh if they had done that. We would have had a completely different Yelena who may not have worked nearly as well.

He only ever authorised the creation of male superhero movies coz he didn’t think female heroes would sell as well (merch, etc.). We only got a Black Widow movie now coz he was either fired or resigned or something

the line "using the only natural resource that world has too much of, girls" is so disturbing, it's stuck with me and still disturbs me ever since my first watch. it made dreykov even more just disgusting as a villain, like this isnt a villain like loki or winter soldier or even thanos, this guy was just pure evil based on his manipulations and sociopathic lack of empathy, his uncaring ideology and his actions in abusing and using these girls who were abandoned, orphaned, or taken by him. he didn't care he just wanted weapons to use and abuse for his own ends no matter the cost to those girls as long as it benefits him. i'm glad there's no way to sympathize with this guy and if someone did i'd be worried about them, the only "villain" they designed for us to sympathize with in the story is antonia/taskmaster who isnt even a villain but a victim of dreykovs abuse as well.
i think this is the first time i see someone mention that line!!! i was speechless when i first heard it in the cinemas and it baffled me how none of the reactors talked about it

I love the fact that the all "3 points landing pose" argument comes from a discussion between Pugh and the stunt coordinator (about how silly and unpractical it is) and was captured by the writer who was listening them and said "yep, that's going in the script"

In the first Avengers movie, Loki said to Natasha, "CAN you wipe out that much red? Dreykov's daughter, Sao Paulo, the hospital fire?" That's right, this movie's entire plot spun out of a throwaway line from a movie over ten years previous.
The 'Agent Carter' TV series had an entire storyline revolving around an agent(a black widow) of Leviathan named Dottie Underwood. Its gives a lot of tidbits into its founding, purpose, etc by using her backstory from 1937 on.
when the black widow movie was announced i was half expecting that we will get an early widow project dottie underwood era storyline.. a bit dissapointed that we didn't tbh..

I see so many people being surprised over the facial tech, People tend to forget that it's been introduced in the MCU as earlier as Captain America Winter Soldier, used by Natasha to impersonate a Security Council board member.

wow, she was like the only person on the cast who spoke Russian without a noticeable accent. Makes sense, Mila is originally from Kiev, raised by Russian speaking parents, she probably helped her daughter working on her Russian lines.

I used to work as a nanny, and I haven't been able to watch the opening flashback since the first time I saw the film...so horrifyingly visceral, and it all hits just a little too close to home. I can't imagine what it'd be like watching it with two daughters. And as much as they try to play Alexei off as sympathetic, he's a guy that turned these two little girls over to the Red Room happily, and clearly knowing exactly what was going to happen to them...hard to get past that.
All that said, watching ScarJo and Florence Pugh together is pretty much the most delightful thing ever.
i forgive melina for participating in trafficking the girls cause, as she said, she had been in the red room 4 times before nat was even born; she never actually had a choice. but alexei? he choose to take the serum and work for dreykov.
@@orianar8344 Choose to work for Dreykov??? This was during the USSR as far as I can tell... I do not think he had much choice in anything. He was a patriot that was indoctrinated into thinking that his nation could do no wrong. He thought he was doing the right thing...
Yelena's colorful outfit in the after-credits scene is because since she stopped being mind-controlled she went overboard with her clothing. Remember she told Natasha that her vest with many pockets was the first item of clothing she'd ever bought for herself. It's only now that she's expressing herself through what she wears.
I am so, SOOOOOO happy you guys loved this!! A lot of people didn't like it, and I understand why, but for me this is one of my favourites in the Marvel series. That opening credits montage is beautifully haunting and sticks with me to this day. I cried at so many points, and I've never loved Natasha more than in this movie. Taskmaster was totally different from the comics, and I understand why people are upset at that, but the costume and fight scenes were AMAZING!!! So glad you enjoyed this, fantastic reaction.

@@joebond545 I think that's a little reductive. The film suffered from a pre-viz 3rd act that didn't quite manage to maintain the tone and intrigue of the first act in particular, and I can see why Taskmaster fans had a bone to pick with this interpretation of the character - even though I think it ultimately worked for MCU Natasha (especially how it links back to the 'Dreykov's daughter' line from the first Avengers movie).
There's also the 'too little too late' element, which I personally think is a weak argument because we all know why a Black Widow didn't happen sooner (*cough* Perlmutter *cough*) and the film is also part origin story for Yelena, but I can see why a lot of people felt this way.
Still really enjoyed the film though, 7-7.5/10.

Yeah this movie surprised me.
Well the movie and scarlett won a peoples choice award. So I guess that there more people who likes it, then people who dislike it. It is also one of my favorite MCU movies.

I could see Yelena becoming the Avengers' new Natasha. The Black Widow character has been the link connecting many other characters. She could wind up everyone's little sister who is actually more capable than they can imagine.

A lot of people forget this, but Natasha has actually used that disguise equipment in two other Avengers movies! It throws some people off unless they remember scenes she's used it in the past.

the heart breaking thing is that it was real for all of them. natasha admitted it, melina had their picture album, alexei remember "yelena's song" and have their names tattooed on him.
This movie doesn't get enough love. It's so good.
It started out strong but really fell apart in my opinion. Yelena and Red Guardian are the only things I like about the later parts of the film. But I hated Dreykov, Taskmaster, and the whole final act. Still the opening with Smells Like Teen Spirit is probably the best one in the whole MCU.
I’d argue it gets too much, as little as it is. Like the writing is really bad and the filmmaking isn’t very good.
Obviously you’re allowed to like it but objectively it’s no good.

Yelena didn’t want Natasha to come find her, even though she sent the photos which made Natasha decide to go find her, Natasha asks her why she would send the photos if she wanted to be left alone, Yelena doesn’t answer the question…. A lot of things happened in this movie in order to further the plot even though a lot of it doesn’t make sense.
At the end when Yelena falls off of the station… Natasha reached down and grabs a random parachute… where the hell did this parachute come from?
The writing constantly doesn’t make sense because the whole thing was made up on the go without consideration for the whole narrative or situation.
They potentially kill an entire prison full of inmates and guards without a consideration even though Natasha’s biggest MCU arc has been about not mindlessly killing.
Natasha blows up an entire room by detonating a bomb right in front of a little girl and somehow the girl survived.
The murderous mind controlled widows engage in hand to hand combat even though they are always packing a sidearm.
And the production seems amateur and rushed.
They spent 200 million dollars and the cgi looks terrible.
Dune only cost 165 million and it’s one of the greatest looking movies of all time.

Because studio execs above Kevin Feige (at the time) didn't think a woman could headline a superhero movie, so this project kept getting put off until WB/DC eventually beat Disney/Marvel to the punch with Wonder Woman.

Another great job by the amazing and adorable Miss Violet McGraw, and Young Natasha is Ever Anderson daughter of none other than Milla Jovovic 😁 two incredible young actresses. Btw if you remember the first avengers movie, there's a scene when Natasha is talking with Loki and he say Remember the hospital in flanes in Brazil ,Dreykov's daughter 😎 in Marvel films everything is connected btw yes Yelena used the Arya Stark's move and Natasha used Yelena's vest on Infinity War!!Hugs guys!!
First time i watched it i thought there is NO way that kid isn't somehow related to Milla Jovovic and had to look it up, the resemblance it's uncanny

Hey Nikki and Steven! Yes, the actress who played Yelena, Florence Pugh, is beyond incredible! You see her other works, incredible range 😊 Actually, Steven you might like this, she starred as Paige in Fighting with My Family, and that role is what convinced Marvel to bring her on as Yelena! Both because of her incredible acting and because she could handle the physicality required for a Black Widow.
If you both haven't seen Fighting with My Family, I greatly recommend it! 🤙

Yes, she was great in that! After this movie I fell in love with Florence Pugh‘s acting and watched almost everything she’s been in starting with Midsommar. Really disturbing horror movie but her acting was amazing!

I dont think anymore mentioned this but when they asked Florence what she wanted her pose to be she found out Natasha's was super dangerous IRL so she was giving her shit for it on set and one of the writers caught it and they put it in and boy I am so glad they did!!! Flo brings so much to each character she plays!!!

So glad you enjoyed this movie. I think this movie was special. The family drama was perfection, and it was one of the funniest movies they've made. Every member of the family is perfect in every scene. And y'all are gonna eat your words when you watch Hawkeye fully. It was just as much fun as this movie. Hailee Steinfeld is a joy.

The end scene with Yelena would have given away Natasha's death if it had come out after Civil War. But after you've seen them all it doesn't mean you can't rewatch them in timeline order. I love Yelena's character as well, so funny.
Marvel doesn’t miss. Regardless of the actor’s lives/personality outside of their MCU roles, they ALWAYS play their characters to perfection. Their casting department is unmatched.
fun fact: during the scene between natasha and dreykov, the little girls taht you can see on the screen are the girls of the producers so it helped scarlett to be really into it during filming the scene.
It seems you missed the point where Taskmaster can watch and mimic the moves of anyone, hence Cap's shield, Hawkeye's arrows, Widow's combat fighting, Panther's claws etc. Taskmaster was a favourite of mine in the comics. However he was not a she like in this movie. Since Antonia was de-programmed, I hope we see him again some time.
The sound effect you used when Natasha severed the nerve has me literally dying 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 As someone who saw this in theaters, I had to go back and rewatch that part 😂😂😂 omg yall have the best reactions out of anyone I've ever watched here ❤❤❤

One of my favourite small details is that Loki refers to 'Drakov's daughter' during his 1:1 with Natasha in the Avengers when trying to get into her head, 10 years before this was made. Very clever stuff.

There’s a theory that the mom planned the fact that the original plan wouldn’t work and always intended to crash the Red Room so she could eliminate Dreykov and erase all traces of her involvement so she could take over. I guess we’ll see in future MCU movies/shows.
She was Natasha's enemy in the comics so it's possible.
Destroying the thing you want to take over is generally not a good plan for taking over.
The opening scenes with the song is probably my fave part in this movie.
Taskmaster analyzes people and learns their moves. Thus most people she faces can't beat her since she knows what to expect. Thats why she moved like Nat at first on the bridge. And why she moves like Cap and even has claws (and can move) like Black Panther.

For the prison escape scene, David was filming both Black Widow and Stranger Things. So they set up two prison sets. So David could film both at one location
Florence was an amazing addition to Hawkeye as well, which is easily one of the best of the Marvel shows so far. She’s a scene stealer. Fwiw, Hawkeye is a great companion piece to this movie, and it does a wonderful job of giving us something that we’ve all needed with respect to Natasha.
I totally agree. I like Black Widow way better now that I've seen Hawkeye. They were great companion send offs for Natasha.
Imagine if this HAD been released before Infinity War, with the same end credits scene. It would have future-shadowed Endgame, and raised the stakes for the audience: "when will Nat die? How will she die? How can Clint be responsible?" We were all robbed!

Hawkeye gets so much better. Tbh the third episode is the best one and it just gets so much better after that. Guys , there is a great tracking shot in the third episode Of Hawkeye.Going Forward, Yelena has great Chemistry with Kate Bishop And there is an emotional pay off regarding Natasha.

@@Just-Saiyan we both really did not like the first 2 episodes. Watched it like a month ago and struggling to hit play on episode 3.
Hawkeye is amazing. The first couple are a little slow but then it takes off.
The lady who was taskmaster was also the lady who was camille in quantum of solace
taskmaster originally was designed as a character who could mimic body/fighting movements very accurately, so they didn't have the same training, taskmaster (or in this case some variant of taskmaster representation in the mcu) simply learnt by sight :)
Natasha used the holomask once before in Winter Soldier, when she disguised herself near the end to get to Robert Redford. You can actually see the masks and wigs in the background in this movie in one shot in the house and then they are later missing after the switch.

@@reynaldolorenzo8409 Hawkeye always deserved a series - and his series is pretty damn good so better late than never I guess. But Natasha deserved better than a Bourne lite after they killed her off. She is the glue that held The Avengers. She had that personal relationship with almost all Avengers except Thor I guess but Scarlet gave the character all she had, but Disney never gave her her due.

Black Widow Natasha's origin story (and one specific romance) in the comics will always be my favourite and some of the choices here are weird when you take that into consideration, but I do like what they made here. the fact that she never had a life other than the dangerous one of a spy/assassin, that the most 'normal' things about her is still part of the life (her whole family are assassins or avengers), that she tries to make up for what she did without shying away from it... it's nice that they kept that.
I was NOT expecting that boink sound when she broke her nose, i started laughing hysterically😂
What got me was the fact that, this addressed the trafficking of young girls. When they brought the Redroom and Drekov down, that was powerful, in releasing all of them!
You ask about Taskmaster's abilities: According to the comics, Taskmaster can completely replicate the fighting moves of anyone it sees. Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Panther, etc. It's called "photographic reflexes". While it can replicate the moves, it won't be to the same level: Cap's strength, etc.
As the eldest of two sisters who don't always get along, the dynamic between Natasha and Yelena is 100% accurate.
The face mask technology was used in Winter Soldier when Natasha was pretending to be a member of the SHEILD council!
They've used the face switching mask before, in The Winter Soldier, as well as a few times in Agents of Shield (which I know isn't canon, but they use elements from canon). I think it's also shown up in another movie, but I can't remember where.
Taskmaster is a villain (male in the comics, but I'll go with 'she' for the sake of the movie) in Marvel who has 'photographic reflexes'. Basically, she can copy any physical feats she sees, as long as they're physically possible for her. Hence, she can fight like Captain America or Black Widow because that's technically humanly possible. She couldn't copy for instance Captain Marvel''s flight or Hulk's strength.

I'm grateful this movie wasn't afraid to go dark. It didn't shy away from the messed up reality of child abuse, it's incredibly deep and emotional.
Also I agree, this movie should've come before Endgame. Black Widow has one of the most impactful, intense, depressing backstories of any Marvel Character! Knowing she's dead while watching this movie just sucks man, she went through so much ):

Definitely finish Hawkeye, it gets so much better, and Yelena shows up. Yelena became my favorite marvel character right away, she is so funny and just radiates little sister energy. Florence Pugh was PERFECT for this role.

TaskMaster has photographic reflexes on a super level. Taskmaster only has to see a little bit of somone fighting , and she can imitate that excat fighting style. Doesn't have to be in person either, she can just watch film. That's why u saw TaskMaster watching & studying Blackwidow's fight scene in Iron Man 2 . U can see TaskMaster mimic Black Widow (obviously) Captain America , Winter-Soldier , Hawkeye , Black Panther , and Spider-Man
