My son wanted me to make a spherical cake for a science project he has next week. We decided to instead cover a giant spherical rice crispy treat with fondant but I will be trying to make him a Golden Snitch cake for his birthday.
Hi! Thanks so much for the video. I will be attempting to make an 8 inch sphere cake later on this week, what would you suggest i use to hold it steady and secure it the bottom? Thanks so much
I can’t remember if I show this in the video, but I think I did. I hammer a dowel through the cake into the cake board to keep it in place. For an 8” though, I think I might use a third of a styrofoam ball on the bottom, to make sure the weight doesn’t smush it down at all.
Hi Robyn! How long do you bake for? And at what temperature? I’m finding it very hard with regular tins and it won’t bake on the top of the semi sphere even with heating cores. Is it possible to have no board in the middle or would it collapse? Thanks!
Hi! Don’t fill the sphere pans very full and they will bake through. The video and written tutorial lay out how I use standard pans as well as the spheres and stack them. I also explain that for sizes over 6”, I always use a board for stability just in case.
@@robynlovescake2005 okay filling them too much was probably my mistake and ended up baking for 3 hours 45 mins. And there’s a hard shell on the cake. When you use regular semi sphere pans do you bake them on something to elevate them from the tray? Should I use a heating core? Thank you so much! Really struggling!
@@rubycohenlove9772 I just set them on the oven racks, and I haven’t tried a core. If you don’t overfill they will bake fine, good luck! You’re aiming for just the dome bit. Your regular rounds will do the rest. There are photos on the blog and it should show in the video as well.
I'm looking to make a hunny pot Winnie the Pooh theme cake for my baby's smashcake photoshoot. I want to use frosting but he's allergic to dairy and would love to know if you have any suggestions?
I wouldn’t, unless you won’t be upset if it sags a little bit. Usually babies don’t get too far into the cake so I’d just let them play with the top half. Up to you though!
It is possible but so tricky to get perfect! I’d really recommend the pans if at all possible; they aren’t very expensive and will save you sooooo much time
It’s so hard to say because it depends on the size of your sphere, thickness you roll and even the brand. For this one I’m sure I didn’t use more than five pounds, so that should be safe!
Summer Marbella I haven’t written out my recipe/method yet, but most people use ganache...just google ganache under fondant and you’ll get tons of info. Once I’ve finished with mine I’ll post it here.
I don’t yet I’m sorry! It’s on the to do list. My caramel apple cake has the sphere part laid out though so that may help! blog.robynlovescake.com/caramel-apple-cake/
Why do you put in some cardboard. That must be disturbing when you cut the cake. I am planning to do a footballcake for the first time and I cannot see the reason why I should be putting in a cardboard layer.
It’s not disturbing, you just cut the top and bottom as separate cakes. It’s for support so the bottom half doesn’t collapse. As I mention in the video though, it is optional under 7” diameter; you can do whatever you’d like but with a larger cake you can expect it to sag.
You can use any cake (I suggest pound cake if you are a beginner but I’ve done it with many types)...this video is to show how I assemble and frost the sphere. When I do the accompanying blog post I’ll link to a recipe. Thanks!
This is my favorite how to do a ball cake so far
Aw I’m so glad 💕
Great tutorial! I'm making my first one soon and I had a little sphere fear, haha. Feeling a little better after watching your video, thanks!
Thanks and I’m sooo glad it helped! Would love to see how your project turns out!!

Thank you for this video, it's really helpful. What recipe did you use for this shape and sized tin? I'm rubbish at converting recipes x
I actually freeze my extra batter so don’t bother with converting (it hurts my brain). Any sturdy Madeira or pound cake will work beautifully
If I can do that to the cake I'm making soon, it's gonna make a killer Death Star.
Awesome!!
do you chill each time putting frosting un the middle space?
Hi! Thank you for the tutorial! Why do you cut all the layers of the baked cake in two? Wouldn’t it be simpler to keep them whole?
It’s just personal preference. I like having more layers of frosting, and I find the thinner layers easier to work with for spheres.
gracias por compartir tu conocimiento ❤
You’re very welcome! 💕
Do you have to put card in the middle? Thanks
@@annmarieturner7622 I do if the sphere is over 6”, just to be sure the bottom will keep its shape.
I love your vdo!! It is very helpful! What type of buttercream do you use? It looks so smooth!!!
Just mix whatever buttercream you are using on the slowest speed for several minutes- that way it doesn’t get bubbles and stays very smooth 👍
@@robynlovescake2005 thank you
Es betun de mantequilla el de abajo y encima es fondant?
Thankfully
How many cups of batter for 10 inch
thank you so much !
You’re so welcome 💛
So you have the steps you took to create the indents for the golf ball?
I just used a ball tool while the fondant was still soft.
How much fondant would I need for a 10 inch sphere
Hello what brand of fondant did you use? Or is it homemade?
I use Satin Ice
I'm looking to make a hunny pot Winnie the Pooh theme cake for my baby's smashcake photoshoot. I want to use frosting but he's allergic to dairy and would love to know if you have any suggestions?
I like miyoki vegan butter spread 👍
Great video Very clear goodluck friend
Thank you so much!
How much bonded do you think it takes the cover up the cake
why did you put the tube in the middle and the circle card between each circles pls
So the bottom doesn’t collapse under the weight of the top half. It’s for support.
What are you using the smooth out the cream? The clear plastic
Hi! I explain it in the video. It’s a piece of a cutting mat.
What if I want to make it a smash cake can i not do the straw and cardboard?
I wouldn’t, unless you won’t be upset if it sags a little bit. Usually babies don’t get too far into the cake so I’d just let them play with the top half. Up to you though!
How long did you bake it?
I probably started checking it at about 20 minutes
How would you put this on top of a cake?
I would use a threaded rod cake structure so there is support all the way through the cake drum.
Is it possible to crave a sphere?? I don't have sphere pans at thus time and need to do a golf ball cake? 😒
It is possible but so tricky to get perfect! I’d really recommend the pans if at all possible; they aren’t very expensive and will save you sooooo much time

What temperature and how long did you bake it.
I bake at 340 F and start checking for doneness at about 20 minutes depending on what size pan it is
