The Klon is out of control, yet the battles wage on.

Check out the Ghost Drive it's back in stock baby: stewmac.sjv.io/GhostDrive
One question. Did you build the kit?
Why? You can build one yourself for wayyyyy cheaper than this. Even buying the "pedal" and all. Those parts in there aren't worth more than about $10 or 15. Everybody knows Stewmac is the biggest ripoff on this industry. 👎
@@J.C... Cool you should do that and sell a kit
@J.C... The kit is a good deal for people who are new to pedal building. Not everyone is an electronics wizard nor do they want to become one.
Klon pedals and gibson guitars....a great combo for beginners
Gatekeep harder
🤣
You misspelled PRS & Fender... but kudos on knowing at least one guitar brand --> Gold Star 🌟
He was joking. I can’t tell if you are too or your joke was that flat
You forgot the dumble special overdrive amp, a must for any starter rig
They are SUPER close. There are some instances where I hear the Ghost Drive being just a bit "thinner", but it's only if you hear both back to back and the same notes, etc. In regular play you would never be able to tell.
Agreed. It’s like two of the same cupcakes but one has sprinkles.
100%
Saying the same thing I think, but I got a bit more mid/high end from the Stewmac, something that could be dialed out at the amp or on the pedal. Came here from a StewMac email promo and MiW carries a good dead of credibility in my book. Out of stock already, but I'm definitely grabbing one of these the next time StewMac floats me a 15% off coupon.
I own a centaur with low serial number and i have bought and played numerous clones centura, tumnus, archers, etc. The all sounds similar on UA-cam but not really. I sold all the clones and keep my centaur and ktr only.
100% agree, with good headphone, and I had to rewatch to compare, and still only felt a slightly difference. I don't even know if the difference was just my imagination.
Setting the controls exactly the same on each pedal may or may not give the exact same sound. Even from two identical pedals followed in serial number. Pots generally have 20% tolerance in value so setting two of the same pots set to the exact same position could give you quite different resistance values. especially if one is of lower value and the other is higher in value at the same position. I'd much rather see if the same exact sound can be replicated on the ghost regardless of its pot position. Seems that the Klon had more bass but that could have been rectified by turning down the treble on the ghost.
wow pots have 20% tolerance? that's nuts to me
You are correct. I come across this with all my pedals I build. They measure different values & some pedals are hotter. It boils down to values of all components. Each pedal will sound slightly different but you'd never know if they're not side by side.
@@HamidKarzai Take an ohm meter & test it a 500k pot won't be 500k that's part of why guitars sound different. I measure all values.
Thanks! Just put in an order for one. I've built 4 other StewMac pedals this year, and their kits are great. A lot of fun to build and play.
I followed the link and bought it. I've been on the fence for a Klon clone but it's a great price and sounds so dang similar. I've always wanted to do a kit pedal too.
Completely off topic but I think it's about time for us to call the Klon clones the "Klones"
"Build your own clone" kits are pretty sweet
@@StealthBeeKid agreed
@@spaceghost5026 I have a friend that does a lot of pedal builds. He loves it.

On Anderton's channel they did an interesting test. They tried 10 clones if i remember correctly.
Decibelics Golden Horse 👌

That was a great video!!!! Thanks for the comparison and the laughter!
Amazing Production Quality... Great Review!
Thanks for posting! I just got this pedal kit. Stewmac has upped their game on this one. It comes with a printed color manual, 9V battery support, and fancier packaging. The other Stewmac pedal kits didn’t have battery support and you had to download the manual too, which I didn’t mind.
I haven’t started on it yet but decorating the pedals either by painting them, adding decals, or hydro dipping is my favorite part.
I completed my first pedal build (Ghost Drive) this morning. Easy build, worked first try. Sounds great with my old Oliver amp. Really. 🤙
I’ve been thinking about building my first pedal, and I think this is a great place to start. Great video as always!
The first pedal I built was a BYOC and I don't regret it. They are nice little pedals and the instructions are very clear. Plus they have great guys in the forums to help you along if you have problems. The Ghost would be a great place to start for the same reasons. It's good quality components with really good instructions and if you have any trouble I'm sure the folks at StewMac would be happy to help you. Plus there are tons of people on UA-cam who are building these things so you can always post some questions in the comments and you'll probably get a quick response.
That strat is absolutely gorgeous, wow..
I honestly prefer how the klon sounds, but no way does it sound 100 times as good
The ghost drive sound slightly harsher to my ears. I recon replacing the capacitors with paper in oil ones to fox that difference. Totally guess work though
imo that's just comparing most high end equipment to low/mid range equipment
@@chrisparker5278 I would venture a bet that if you had two pedals with paper in oil and one with modern capacitors and used a double blind test that you couldn't tell which is which. The value of the cap is what will change the sound much more. And if you don't believe me I have some very special speaker wire that is oxygenated, time aligned, gold plated tips, special dielectric insolation, that I will sell you for only $1000/ft 🤣
@@leeadama8402 Have you ever done that test yourself? "I would venture" not, or if so, that you may have burned out your ears playing loud.
@@piedpiperprod I fix 80's and 90's rack units and pedals have indeed done complete electrolytic cap replacement on units costing upwards of $1000. On some I have older units to compare and guess what, there is no "mojo" lost. My ears are just fine, as ive done no touring. I still have some "mojo" speaker wire for you though.
Id love to see him upload a video like this, then a week later reveal he switched the pictures and read the comments people left defending the klon
I wish guitar channels did shit like this lol
Someone should do this
That is a sick tune...sounds amazing 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼
I appreciate the ghost theme with all the "Ghost" inspired riffs.. bravo.
Well executed video man!
Great filming and content!
Good stuff man
Built 2x 5E3 Tweed Deluxe amps, a EC Expander pedal, Ghost Drive and Tape Op echo pedal , all from Stewmac and all amazing.
Ive owned just about every tone snob amp and pedal at some stage, bought and sold , but making sound gear yourself that sounds this good is a really enjoyable experience. And a little addictive. Their kits are great!
incredible, sounds identical to my ears!
Dang, now I’m thinking about buying that pedal. It sounds so good and so amazingly close to the klon centaur.
Digging the videos they get better An better every time hehe 🤙
Nice! I can't distinguish the clone from the klon. I have the J. Rocket silver and the gold archer and the Wampler Tumnus. They are good enough for mm
I ordered one when I saw this video ( 3/17) and now they are out of stock. Mine just showed up today. can't wait to put it together..
Dude man your videos crack me up! 😆 I appreciate it.
Honestly the Klon sounds indiscernible to me from any generic distortion effect. I could get that tone 500 different ways from here to Sunday on any fender/marshall amp without a pedal
True
Please show us your proof with, say... A fender twin or deluxe Reverb? No pedal right? 😂
Finally someone with some sense, thanks!
@@CscotGoodwin a fender frontman will easily
@@CscotGoodwin the real challenge is getting a clean channel out of my orange amp
Conclusion: If you take the Klon and reduce the bass on the amp just a bit it will sound exactly like the ghost drive. So the ghost drive lacks a bit of bass making it sound slightly thinner in sound compared to the klon.
Today’s lesson: Don’t go broke buying gear, instead buy the right gear. And don’t forget its not about the bow, its about who shoots the arrow.
Guys who buy every single gimmick and guitar out there, generally are guys who can't play well, they don't understand dynamics and always play too loud. Take their pedals away and they don't know how to handle that. You need a great AMP, then you won't need to pile dozens of battery boxes on the floor. My amps are generally vintage amps, that have no master, no gain channels, no foot switches except for reverb and tremolo. Amps like these, you just turn them all the way up and the tones are just unbeatable. Put a pedal in front of them and the great tones get lost in noise. I have lots of pedals that are now worth money from age, but every time I sit down and play each of them, the pure sounds of my amplifiers just beats all of them.
can't help but think that this is where an EQ pedal or the amp EQ comes in. Aside from inherent characteristics of many items, sometimes I think people are hyped about the inherent (pickups, pedals, etc) to the neglect of tweaking other factors. Most Klon clone videos I watch in comparison are generally highlighting EQ issues (the Klon is more full, this other pedal more nasally, aka it has too much treble and not enough bass, etc). I get the lore, especially as it is what sells, but the music industry has a way of taking the average person and turning them into a cork sniffer in no time flat (happened to me). Nuance, not vast difference, has a way of commanding big prices. It is the person who shoots the arrow far more than the bow, agreed.
@@str5977 exactly. Thats what everyone should have in mind. Klon is what it is for its rarity
The tention in the intro was so different but amazing, as always love the video!
Legitimately, one of your funniest videos. Had me laughing my ass off. Great content.
And truth be told, the going and cheek nature worked well for the product. Love my Archer Klone, won’t ever leave my board, but it’s fun to see other interpretations, especially side by side with a Klon.
Would love to build them for the players wanting them yet don't do elec or assembly. Mine is here 3/25. Yay, so fun! Many thanks for the comparison, great show.
Good job Stew Mac!
Very creative video, love it!
Based on this video, I bought the kit from Stewmac. It took two weeks to build, a bit at a time, because I am lazy. If I was to actually consider myself a guitar player, I would be a beginner.
This pedal contains magic. More fun than fun itself. If you can't afford 8 grand, it's the best 100 bucks or so you'll spend...
Rating: excellent!
Dude if you made a feature film I would totally be glued. This is great!
Stew Mac nailed it! They pretty much sound the same unless you are Eric Johnson or you are an auditory savant.
Literally, closing my eyes, I couldn’t even tell where the change was when played back to back.
I owned an original Klon. Bought it at the Texas guitar show the year they came out. I used it for many years, finally sold it a couple of years ago for a lot of money and I got the KTR. I purchased the Ghost kit and put it together last week. It's a good kit and pretty easy to put together. It worked the first time I tried it. The Ghost and the KTR sound very similar, when I got the KTR I thought it sounded very close to the Klon. So it's an easy choice for me, plus the kits are now on sale for $99.
Just ordered mine!
I've been looking for a light electronics project. And I have also wondered what a Klon would sound like paired with my modeller. And the price is also right, on top of everything.
I thought the ghost sounded ever so slightly cleaner, like a smidgen less gain. But yea, it sounds great either way, and different analog pedals from even the same factory will have those kinds of difference.
agreed, especially on that last strat chord
There’s so many options to clones of the Klon EHX, J Rockett, Wampler , Ceriatone and on and on.. But one I settled on is the Vintage Tone Prometheus hand built and handwired and the chassis is close enough to the Klon and build quality is awesome but what had me sold is the LED illuminated logos and knob logos .. very much worth the $169.99 if you haven’t heard of it check out Philip McKnights review on it ..
Great intro bro !!!
It's like 99% there. Maybe subtle tweaking of the knobs to not be in identical settings would help get that? Sounds great though.
I use the nux horseman and I love it! I noticed I use it as a boost into a morning glory overdrive! Creamy tone!
Wow , that Stewmac pedal is really really close to the tone of the klon. Definitely sounds like it would be worth the time building it.
You really do a nice job with these Y-Ts.
I have a RYRA Klone($200) and it's supposed to be a part for part clone of the real Klon and sounds fantastic..I also have a Wish Klon I paid $38 for and sounds every bit as good as the RYRA. I think almost any type of Klone with the proper circuit and gain pot will sound extremely close to the real thing so there's no need to spend crazy money on these. .
As there are a lot of Klon types out there and I don’t have a particularly strong allegiance to the original, I’m fine with my Mosky Golden Horse bought from Ali for less than 30 bucks CDN,(it might not even be a real Mosky), and truth be told, in the shootout videos, I seem to be partial to the EHX offering above all of them.
probably because the soul food is the only one that sounds a little bit different lol
The Klon came out in 1994 and were the rage for all the Guitar Magazines. However, there has been a lot of water under that bridge since then. I bought one of the rip off Chinese generic Klons for $50.00 with the Centaur print on the case and it sounds good enough for me. There are those people with money to burn just for the bragging rights. I have way too many dirt pedals as is and to fork out thousands for an original is insanity to me. However, it's their money and they can do what they want with it. There are a lot of professional versions out there now for a reasonable price to where you don't have to take out a mortgage for some silly pedal.
The best guitar to use with the Chinese generic Klon Klone is a Chinese fake! :-) But to be honest, the fact that you have to build the Ghost Drive will limit its popularity some. Most users prefer to have an assembled ready to go pedal. Still, I foresee StewMac selling a ton of these. And somehow I don't see Tyler selling his Klon anytime soon. As you can see in this video he's talking to it like it's his friend or something. And it's talking back. Most disturbing.
I missed the whole "Klon" phenomenon - I was too busy doing my Electrical Engineering diploma and buying a house. When it popped back on the radar a few years back, I checked out the circuit to see what's up with it. By this stage, there was enough people who had reverse engineered it. It's definitely a unique effects circuit for the time. Unfortunately there's so many knock off's now, no one really has to pay $7000 for an original anymore.
All the hype reminds me of the original tubescreamers - You gotta have the right opamp in a tubescreamer for it to sound right. Mmmmm, no you don't. It was just the cheapest part they could get away with.
@@peterschmidt9942
The Klon phenomenon has taken on a life of it's own. I doubt that it really has anything to do with the performance of the pedal and more about the collectability. I have 2 knockoff that get me into the ballbark at least. Other aspects include the type of guitar you are using and also the amp.
@@johndumont6790 Yeah it was about the same time old guitars started having "value" again to ridiculous prices. I still think they're second hand guitars and should be priced accordingly.
The vintage guitar thing has actually been around for a long time. Decades before the Klon Centaur came out. There are so many good dirt pedals on the market today, I cannot see why these things are in the stratosphere pricewise. From what I have heard, I like their tone, but it is not my favorite by a long shot. It has the hype and momentum going for it at the moment, but until the public figures it out, they will keep spending the ridiculous amounts of money to have one.
i have 13 guitars and 7-8 boutique and vintage marshalls. i recently realized ill never use all this shit. i stopped buying new stuff and ive found a whole new appreciation for all the top line stuff i already have. shutup and play!!! play with the toys you have!!!
Sounds great! Sold out before I knew it was available! That'll teach me to not be online constantly! They do have a waiting list though.
I already have the wish clone you tried out last year. There was so much of them it was actually hard to find the exact one you had
I love my ceriatone centura
And tumnus deluxe both.
I love this new persona
Great video!
It's getting ridiculous at this point. I'm not going to pay $300 to have a fuzz effect, no tone is worth being homeless over. The other day I scooped a cheap ass delay pedal for $40 at my local pawn shop and I gotta say it sounds great and better than any delay plugin I use in Logic X.
@@naegleriafowleri2230 I just saw Godthrie Govan fucking play smoke on the water and I gotta say before I heard it I was like nahhhh but that dude can make anything sound good.
It’s really all about the components inside, not the case they come in. A lot of it is brand names like anything else so as long as it sounds good to you that’s all that matters to be honest. Most of the pedals on my board are under $100 and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I'm curious...what delay pedal you bought at the pawn shop?
If you’re going homeless from spending $300 as an expense you have bigger problems than that.
Digital effects are a lot cleaner than the things we look for in analog, if you wanna emulate a pedal you'll want to put some more things in the chain than just the delay ;)
Just bought my first tube amp (Marshall origin 20H with 2x12 Cab) thinking about getting the ghost drive for it. Pedal sounds amazing.
Marshall Origin *chefs kiss*
I just got the 50C after cancelling my pre-order for a cream 20 stack! Amazing sounds!
@@MitchellMozdzen its been great so far. I don't understand all the hate with it. Just got to eq it correctly.
@@thecarterkent6571 It's because it sucks at low volumes it has like no pre amp gain at all and when you use a pedal the pre amp compresses in an unlikable way. There's some useable tones especially after a mod but you'd be better of buying a marshall with a more classic circuit.
@@florisvanlingen The Orgin is literally the most classic circuit they have lol 😆 I don't understand what you mean, because that is the whole point of being the "Orgin" amplifier.
wow, sound EXACTLY the same. I'm wondering if I could put together that kit, my only soldering experience has been changing pickups.
No joke I literally watched the original video this morning lol
This video is outstanding :D
I’m all over this.🎸👍
If you are looking for the cheaper but solid category the boss metalcore pedal. It sounds very close and very clear.
Dammit! I already received my Landtone kit and my Wish pre-assembled one is one state away. Now, I'm contemplating getting one of these to customize my color.
Maaan your videos are just too good!! 😂👌🏼
During the lockdown the guy who made your original Kwans was having problems so he was selling them again in the original housing or a smaller version 375 for the big and 175 for the little and he sold a boatload and I do work great
I got the ghost because I wanted a fun project to work on and need a drive pedal. Maybe my ears just don’t work but I feel like I hear this guitar tone alllllll the time
The StewMac is close, but missing some low-mid sweetness.
If you're eager to build one then fine, otherwise, just buy an Archer and save your weekend to practice.
It's not that something's missing, it's that potentiometer's have a roughly 20% variance that'll definitely make two pedals at the same setting sound slightly different
I enjoy building the pedals and find it relaxing. Playing an instrument is relaxing too. There’s something about building it yourself even if it’s from a kit.
Just ordered one.
I've never used a real Klon but the Ghost Drive was the first pedal kit I ever built (not recommended if you can afford a cheaper, more basic kit in addition, to start with but still doable). I have to tell you the first time I fired it up it nearly blew me off my feet it was that hot (I had everything turned up all the way like an idiot). I have an SG and a heavily modded VHT Special 6 tube amp and even 10 feet away with my back to the amp the feedback was intense. I've been using it more and more and the tone is really incredible and the range I can get by just moving the gain or treble knob a couple of ticks is *chefs kiss*. If I'm playing a rhythm line I'll go for a different StewMac pedal (the EC Expander) because it really cranks up without losing the bottom end at all (more of a 60s/70s British overdrive sound), but for any leads I'm swapping my East River Drive for the Ghost Drive on my pedalboard. 10/10 would recommend!
I really dig my Wampler Tumnus. This one would be fun just for the experience of putting it together.
I got the Jeds Peds Klone kit (UK company) and it sounds STUNNING, only like £45 I think
Sounded identical through my throwaway work headphones while I'm eating chips
finally I have my own ghost 👻 drive!! Very good experience build it! Sounds like a chocolate cake with a lot of layers!! 😂
The Visual Sound Route 66 pedal has a great distortion and a compressor in one pedal. Also the Visual Sound H2O pedal they make has a great phase and delay in one box as well. 4 boxes take the space of two. Don't know if they still make them but they are really nice. Those and a Wah pretty much cover it for me.
The Route 66 is a TS-808 derivative and I forget which compressor. Sounds NOTHING like a Klon.
ETA: a version 1.0 Route 66 was my first pedal and I still have it.
@@chipsterb4946 I wasn't saying it sounds like the Klon just that it was a good pedal. I think mine is about 20 years old. It was a tube screamer clone perhaps?
I like mid-range sound a lot. I can't tell the difference between the ghost and the klon. Awesome! As of 3/21, @ 7 PM, the Ghost is out of stock.
I'm a big fan of my Tumnus Dlx. I don't know if it's a perfect Klon copy, but I like it.

The StewMac PCB for the Ghost Drive is the EXACT same as the PCB from a well known guitar pedal PCB company that I know, love, and support fully! The StewMac version gives you all the parts in a "bundle", but the company that sells the original PCB for you to purchase, allows you to source your own parts. IMHO this allows you to become more "intimate" with the search and build of your pedal, and allows you to take on many other aspects, such as substituting components to see what happens. I can attest that this pedal does indeed sound amazing, but I have the original one that I purchased myself and sourced all my own parts. the PCB was like $12, and you can TYPICALLY source the parts STUPID cheap if done right!
I really like my Klon Centaur. But, it didn’t cost me a cent lol. Courtesy of a few delicous captures from the Quad Cortex community.

Lmaooo bro you really did it on this one bro. Way to go hahaha
Tyler you are supremely powerful. The Dos Equis dude of 2021. I'm just glad you didn't really buy the one for 500k, they'd all be 6 figures. Now do me a a favor and bring back YOMEGA yoyo's, bean bag chairs and Honda three-wheelers. 🤙
I just finished my build of the Ghost drive. I am not familiar with this pedal at all. Seems to work different from my other pedals, output at about noon to equal my amps volume. With this I have the output at about 9 o'clock to equal amps output. At noon it's super loud. Is this normal function for the pedal?
If I buy a genuine Klon will it make my pawnshop squire and Marshall G10 mk2 sound like a million bucks? What’s that? You say I need to learn to play first? 🙁
Original Klon still somehow sounds a bit "warmer". Hard to tell the difference since i've never played neither of these pedals, would love to tho. Stewmac still did a hell of a job nailing the klon tone.
Great demo video. Never seen a semi-hollow body strat. What's the scoop on that one?
