- Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
Today we are swatching and comparing a few different brands of Terre Verte/Earth Green: Winsor & Newton, Sennelier, Schminke, Daler Rowney, Holbein, Rembrandt, QOR, Daniel Smith, Renesans, Old Holland, A.Gallo, Paul Rubens and Lukas.
Earth Green is a soft, muted green that can be used for atmospheric landscapes, portraits, but my favourite usage is for pottery...
I will also try a simple sketch! And lots of mixes...

Thank you for giving this subtle pigment the attention it deserves.😊 Please dont feel embarrassed for your love of pigments. We all have our hobbies and we invest according to our means. You are giving the watercolor community a very important service and its appreciated. 🙏 I found a few of these brands to be rather interesting too. 😊❤
Thank you Tracy. Actually I spend very little on clothing and so on…😊 pigments and colours are a passion! (And yarn as well 😂🫢)
@WatercolorElisabetta Ditto! Me too. I also have a small yarn collection and I wait until winter to "attempt" crocheting. 🤣 Perhaps you would consider a yarn video one of these days?😍
@TracyIndy LOL that would be a lot of fun 😂 I love both knitting and crocheting!
@WatercolorElisabetta I admire knitting, and I have the needles, but I'll stick with crocheting. 🤣 Great! I look forward to seeing more of your treasures and creations. 😍
Now this was a bit of an eye opener Elisabetta. I have Rembrandt, W&N and Sennelier. Your painting of the lovely, traditional teapot using Rembrandt and a little violet is beautiful and shows the true beauty of a low tinting colour. Many artists seem to write off a low tinting colour, and I have no idea why. Watercolour has the ability to be high tinting, giving strong, punchy artwork, but it also can be very delicate. I feel there is current leaning toward high chroma paints which I feel is a shame. Having both strong and low tinting colours in your palette, as you just proved in your lovely leaves, gives a lovely balance. Rembrandt’s Green Earth is absolutely stunning in mixes. My favourite was mixing it with Potters Pink, giving a new, delicate colour that granulates beautifully. Much thanks for all you do to help us understand the nuances of pigments. 👩🏻🎨🖌️🎨❤️
I also love it with Potter’s Pink!! It’s a wonderful soft grey….thanks as usual my friend for your lovely comment. Have a very nice Sunday!
Thank you for creating this video. Not many artubers discuss PG23. I hope to try it one day.
I’m sure you will enjoy it 😃. Thank you for your kind words…
@@WatercolorElisabetta Oh, my pleasure 😊
What a lovely demonstration and comparison. I have none of those colors, but watching your video makes me want to add Terre Verte to my very palette.
Thank you so much Lee! It’s an irresistible colour, a very good addition to any palette. 😍
Thank you for comparing them! I didn't realize Sennelier's was so beautiful. And I love the combination of green and potter's pink 😊
Thank you 😊 I like that combination too! Thanks for your kind words.
I love this shade! I actually made my own from real earth pigment, and it’s lovely! PG23 Cyprus Green Earth. One jar will last me more than a lifetime! But I have used it for some custom blends with pbk11 for extra granulation, and a moody look.
WoW this sounds so much fun! Great idea to mix it with mars black….thanks for sharing!
@@WatercolorElisabetta Absolutely! Give it a try. When I see you post I run to watch it like a rabid dog is chasing me! Lol Love your videos😍
@sunnycharacter Lori! Your metaphor really made me smile! 😀 so funny 😂
@@WatercolorElisabetta 😹🤣
I have the WN Terre Vert (with the mixed pigments). I liked the color but found it *very* hard to re-wet (dried from tube) & didn't use it much for years. I then added a bit of honey to the paint and now it re-wets easier. I've since fell in love with it for use in greenery (leaves and such) It's subtle granulation is lovely and it has earned a permanent spot on my palette.
I didn't know there was a single pigment version. I will be sure to replace it with one them when mine runs out.
Thanks for sharing!
The honey addition sounds like a great idea! I use Rembrandt regularly and not only it’s beautiful but it also rewets like a breeze. I will add honey for sure to some of my paints , thank you!
Interesting how varied the value range is on this color. Some are very light and some are dark. The light valued colors remind me of Davy’s Gray. My favorite of these colors is the one from Winsor & Newton. Lately I have gravitated back to W&N after favoring Daniel Smith for the past couple of years. Ciao Elisabetta!
Ciao! We are very much on the same page Morrison! Davy’s Gray is one more colour I really appreciate and I have a video in the pipeline. I think earth green would suit well your palette. And yes, at the end of the day W&N is always of stunning quality….thanks a lot for your comment.
I agree about black. There are some fun uses in watercolor 😊
That's me right now ❤😅
Miniatures..till i gain momentum again for something larger..
Love your quick miniature beauty...thanks for the inspiration ❤❤❤
Yes, I like to paint every day small sketches. It’s fun! Thanks a lot for your comment! 😁
Terre Verte is another recent addition to my palette. I haven’t painted with it much yet, but I’ve found it useful in portraits so far. It’s a lovely comparison, there are a couple I’d like to add. Thank you ❤
Hi Sonya! It’s a lovely colour that I tend to forget as well…but when I use it I do love it!
I love green earth. I’m excited to try Michael Harding’s terra verte blue shade.
Ahaha Sergio you are reading my mind…I’m really looking forward to the next sale of this brand to stock up some new interesting colours…thank you for participating in the discussion!
Fascinating color! It’s not currently on my palette, but after I watched this video, another YT comparison of it popped up. Alexandra Richardson loves it too & swatches out several brands different from those you swatched! So interesting how the color differs from one manufacturer/place of pigment origin to another.
After you said so I checked out her interesting video, thanks! As you said, it’s very fascinating….I love niche colours…thanks for sharing !
The comparison is quite nice. For some people who love intense and vibrant colors(including me) may think earth green just unfavorable and problematic: low tinting strength, dull and sometimes hard to rewet(I mean both versions of terre vert from winsor and newton).
Hi Claire! Sure, if you like vibrant colours….it’s not for you! Earth green is very subtle and muted, and you are right…not so easy to rewet. For me it was an acquired taste….but I agree is not for everyone. Thanks for sharing!
There are two versions of terra verte from Gallo, warm and cold, both beautiful, although weak. I have got Winsor and Newton as well, but I don't use any of them too much because it is such a weak color. You have encouraged me to try again. Thank you.
Yes, I agree there are not many opportunities to use it! But it is so lovely that I sometimes paint pottery just for the sake of using it ❤️
Qor shows their color as looking more like an original Hookers green and I wish the tube colors on the outside were a little closer to what is inside therefore I appreciate seeing what basically the pigment looks like. I thought what kind of PG 23 was this until I realized that it is just the same PG23. Still very lovely. DS should have named it the original Hooker’s green because DS’s Hooker’s green is way too obnoxious for the name. Holbein has a lovely green wow nicer and more transparent than a chromium green but along the same hue, very earthy and lovely, but not terre verte. Thank you, such a treat to see these confusing terre verte pigments. 😊
Thank you Jennie…a lot of food for thoughts in your kind comment. Thanks for sharing! Take care!
I had not noticed this color before, is beautiful. The Lukas version remind me of davys gray which is nice.
Paulina, actually Davy’s Grey will be one of my next videos! It’s a great colour….
Wonderfu amd helpful video. Thanks! I have A Gallo and Old Holland, but now i want to add Qor and Sennelier. I have the Sennelier green umber, which is lovely. Some of those darker mixes also look perfect for use in forest scenes too. Love the mixes you came up with too. Definitely want t experiment more with this color now!
Haven't been able tobtry Rembrandt yet, but they are at the top of my 'want to try" list, along with Michael Harding!
Hi! I see you love watercolor paint just like me!! Rembrandt is great value for money I think: definitely artist grade, beautiful colors, at a fair price. MH is a dream!! Expensive but wonderful! Let me know if you try them!
PWC has two versions of green earth as well. One of them is yellowish and looks very similar to sennelier's version. It is on PBr7 as well. The other is hue on PB28 and PG8 but it looks beautiful and behaves as green earth should.
I only have one colour by PWC and it's very beautiful (Pale blue) . Do you think it is a brand a shloud try sooner or later? thanks!
@@WatercolorElisabetta I think it is not a must have brand, definitely not something I would buy whole collection of. But there are some colors which may be not super lightfast but they are gorgeous. Indigo made on real indigo pigment, alizarin crimson and vandyke brown - the same, indian yellow on py183 is my personal favorite yellow as well as cadmium green pale(pg26,py35). I think these guys you should try.
@Sirinoeles thank you! I will write them down 😊
I love your color comparison videos!
And i love WN Terre Verte.
I am a little confused...
My WN hue is the same beautiful hue as yours , but only has two pigments ... PG23 and PB28.
No PG18, viridian.
Hi!! Sorry for my late reply but it’s holiday time…I think we have 2 different versions…I double checked on the website and it says 3 pigments…mistletoes of watercolour! Thanks a lot for your message 😀
They removed PG18 from the mix...
I use Roman Szmal's PG23 for the underside of apple leaves.
Thank you Sara! I’m sure Roman Szmal must be very nice, and this suggestion of apple leaves is very interesting 😀
It's good to see you, Sara. 👋 😊
you too, Tracy! @@TracyIndy
Thank you for the video, very useful! 🙂 I bought yesterday a tube of Terre Verte from Winsor and Newton. When I tried it, I was shocked of how weak the color was.... I'll try to give a chance, see what I can do with it.
It’s a very interesting subtle shade, once you get used to it!
Thank you so much for this comparison! I primarily use Roman Szmal's Green Earth in my palette, it's fantastic for color correcting subtleties in portraits without overwhelming the skin tone. However I am running low on my pan and instead of wasting pans I wanted to buy a tube of PG23 instead to refill with, and your comparison really helped in my decision making!
It’s always a good idea to refill with pans….and a fun activity!! Which one did you choose? Not an easy task!
@@WatercolorElisabetta The two I'm looking at are QoR's Terre Verte or Schminke's Green Earth (thank goodness they're right next to each other haha)! I prefer to keep single pigments in my palette but I think the schminke mix looks pretty close to what I already use to look past that. I'm going to likely buy both and compare them.
I really love the Schminke!!
Your DS ones are extremely dark. I use a tiny bit and mine are more like the others 🤔 interesting. I also don't just put it down on my paper lol very interesting. Love all of them!
Thank you Adrianna for your comment. I also love all the different earth greens! Difficult to pick one!
Ciao, Elisabetta! Paul Rubens has yet another version of Green Earth, called "Verona Green Earth", also Pg23. It's similar to the Rembrandt one.
Ciao Virginia!! In che set l’hai trovata? Paul Rubens ha colori bellissimi! (I hope you speak Italian LOL)
@@WatercolorElisabetta Ali Express, not in a set but single tube.
I've sent a message for you on your Instagram page.
Yes I have a sennelier palette and it’s the silkiest lay down of color. No contest 😊
I love Sennelier too! It’s so unique…
I recently bought green earth from Roman Szmal and I was disappointed of this light and sticky color. But now I knew, that it was pure pigment PG23. Very similar color to sennelier Rembrandt
Yes, it’s a very peculiar pigment. It’s not my go to green, but sometimes it’s perfect like this….soft and muted. Thank you for your comment!
The mixes are beautiful, if somewhat muted.
Yes, I didn’t know they could be so nice…I found out during the video…
I love Terre Verte, I also use Roman Szmal Green Earth which is easy to rewet. I only use Winsor and Newton from the tube as it does not rewet well from a pan of tried paint. Which is an issue with PG23. Have you used QOR Terre Verte from a pan ? Is it easy to rewet ? I love to use this colour for distant trees, flowers and yellow shade more earthy colour of this for brickwork.
Thank you June😄 for sharing this. The idea of using it in brickwork is just great….I will try soon! (Maybe today 😂, I love brickwork!)
I love PG23.
This is the first video of yours that I watched.
DS Rare Green Earth is PG23.
Thank you for the information about Rare Green Earth! 😊. I hope you will watch more of my videos! Take care!
Thank you for your comparison video on the Terre Verte watercolour paints. I have been looking for a replacement for my W/N Terre Verte paint. I am a botanical artist and Terre Verte is very useful in botanical painting. I am wondering if Sennelier Greenish Umber is their Perylene Green. Daniel Smith's paints are highly pigmented and a little goes a long way. I wonder what it would look like watered down to match the tinting strength of W/N Terre Verte (next to D.S.).
Hi! Sennelier looks like a Perylene Green actually, but it’s not the genuine pigment. For me DS it too dark. I like my Terre Verte weaker…. I like the Schminke a lot!
I forgot to ask Elizabetta, which ones out of these paints dry hard and are too hard to rewet? Old Holland and which others ?
Rembrandt is easier to rewet than Old Holland but still not the easiest. I’m afraid it’s PG23….but I can get away with it just dropping a couple of drops in advance.
A Gallo has two versions of PG23. Do you have the other one?
No unfortunately only the warm one…
Can someone help me with some recommendations and thoughts? I need a professional palette after using several student grade watercolors. I did try DS but it is way too much paint for me or what I am use to. I want to start with a palette. Any ideas?
Hi!! I have a set by DS which I really love. You can watch my review here! ua-cam.com/video/2jcBXfcNmUo/v-deo.htmlsi=0AQTAPU5gvZiTQn4
Hallo , rare green earth from D Smith is really PG23! I think you metted it too tick. Normally it is a Very soft color 😊
Hi! I’m a bit confused, because it doesn’t mention PG23 neither on the tubes nor on the website. And I can can assure you that it behaves very differently from all the other PG23 I have…thank you anyway for sharing your opinion, which I assume being true! I just wonder why they don’t mention it.
I dare say the Holbein oxide just looked like oxide. Totally overpowered the pg 23 what’s the point
I have A Gallo PG23 warm. I love the color, but I don’t use it that much. I pre-wet the half pan which makes it easier to load the brush and then I can put down a thicker layer of paint so it’s darker. However, the caveat is a thicker layer lifts easily 😆.
Yes you’re right it’s definitely better to rewet it well in advance….I love your use of the word caveat!! We use a lot of Latin expressions in Italian but not this one…you use it as a noun and not a verb…fascinating!
@@WatercolorElisabetta ‘caveat emptor’, Latin for ‘let the buyer beware’ (which you probably already know☺️), is the only Latin I can remember!
I think Old Holland is a Veblen goods.
I don’t agree!! I buy them at a reasonable price here in Italy and many of their colours are really unique! However, it might be the case in the US…are you based in the US?
2nd 😊
A very good placement!
Any placement on the comments of your videos is very good for me 😊.
Thanks for this! I have the WN mix and was kind of sorry I bought it. It’s living in only one of my oodles of curated palettes. I’ve been using it on its own in landscapes. But these mixes and how it knocks the color back, as Charlotte deWinton might say, is wonderful! This will be perfect for underpainting the whole landscape, a technique I’m just beginning to experiment with more.
I love it with the cobalt violet which brand was that?
This cobalt violet is Rembrandt. Delightful colour!!
You have given me an idea!! I would like to try it as un under painting….thank you!
@@WatercolorElisabetta eager to see!
The Qor Bohemian Green Earth looks a lot like PY129.
A less transparent version 🥰…stay tuned for py129!
@@WatercolorElisabetta ooooh 😃. Looking forward to that!!
I love greens. I think I'll have to try that QOR paint. 😍
@@TracyIndy I hope you enjoy it 😊
@@awatercolourist I am sure I will. TY 😊 I'm going to order some aquazol for paint making too. That will be an experience. 😂
