      Thank you so much. I like exploring the main color first but also seeing the mixes it can create. That is even more important in my book.

    This was nice, thank you! I have Van Gogh, and really like it. I use it mostly for rocks , trees, and stone/brick. I have a swatch book, and I put this Davy's Gray on both the "greys" page and the "green " page.

      Thank you for letting me know. It will probably go on my palette in some form because the mix with buff titanium was so lovely. I love the categories you have swatched with, I'm not really sure how I even thought of the color aspect of davy's grey. I just knew I liked it.

    This is so cool! I feel everyone forgets about/doesn’t know about Davy’s Grey and it’s one of my favorite colors :) I’ve only tried the Holbein but am interested in trying the others now!

      I stumbled upon the Holbein Davy's Grey last year after seeing it in a demo. Now I can't paint without it. So happy to inspire you with some other brands!

    Thank you Kelly, that was interesting and informative, I agree that the Holbein is lovely as a single paint , I have the Shinhan and was suprised how green it was when it arrived but I like the mixes, the Van Gogh has pleasing mixes too, can't get da vinci paints easily here in the UK so I might try the Holbein next because it's a cooler version. Not keen on the Winsor and Newton.

    This might seem simple…but after watching another comparison video about Davy’s gray..and some have 4 different pigments…my style of painting, I start with all single pigments-and go from there. I RARELY use convenience mixes, prefer to make my own…although, I DID get some cascade green last week, mainly because my friend and I are doing some Christmas cards with it.
    Anyways, I needed a greenish gray for something last month..what I wanted was closest to Winsor Newton. So..I started with DS gray titanium…added just a tiny dot of one of my PG23 Green Earth. It was almost exactly what I needed. My only issue was more granulation than I wanted-but it worked out, so 🤷🏼‍♀️
    I tried adding PG17, which is one of the pigments in W-N, but it was just too dark mossy for what I needed. Mission Gold carry’s one that’s even closer to what I wanted-they used PB27 + PY3..black and white..but it appeared VERY smooth & the perfect green I was looking for. I might try mixing a green with the Prussian Blue and adding just a dot to the gray titanium…just for future reference! 😁

      There are so many ways to mix it for sure. I just love the convenience and the comparisons give me a chance to explore. Did you happen try Cascade Green plus an orange? It will come very close to the Davy's. Thanks for sharing with me and my audience, I love seeing what other artists are creating!

    I love Holbein paints for it's dependability. It was the paint I started with and still love it.
    Every time I have tried a W&N paint, I've been dissatisfied.
    Thank you for the comparison. I find such studies interesting.
    tfs.

    • @kellyhoernig
      @kellyhoernig  9 місяців тому

      I have a little, growing collection of Holbein paints. Can you recommend a nice muted blue and green? Nothing too bright but yet still full of great coloration for mixing. I totally agree about the W&N, I am trying hard to like them because they do have a great color range but am always left disappointed in the end. So glad you found the comparison helpful, thank you for watching!

      Winsor&Newton has died. Both their brushed and paint are iverlriced and overrated.I'd easily choose Vanchoos/Rembrandt over them.

  • @yellowsunnybear375
    @yellowsunnybear375 9 місяців тому

    I've only tried DaVinci's Davy's Grey and have been happy with it. I do like how the Holbein swatched out, so maybe I'll give it a try someday. Too bad about the W&N because the color is great, but it was pretty clear you were struggling with the mixing.

    • @kellyhoernig
      @kellyhoernig  9 місяців тому

      It was a beautiful color (W&N) and when dried it also felt very chalky in texture, unlike all the other brands. Thank you for letting me know about the DaVinci brand, I will have to play with it a little bit more.

    Any Van Gogh or Rembrandt color recommendations anybody? I'm building a new palette for general sketching.Problem is,I like 90% of their collors but neither can afford them all,nor the palette would be ideal with a ton of colours.Thats why I need some ideas for "must" color opinions!

    • @kellyhoernig
      @kellyhoernig  9 місяців тому +1

      I don't have any Rembrandt but have quite a few VanGogh watercolors. If you like color separating and granulating colors, I would highly recommend their Dusk line, every color is gorgeous. I love their raw sienna also. I bought quite a few last month but just haven't had time to play yet. I will keep you posted when I do.

    I was looking at the ShinHan PWC dot cards, and I noticed the PWC Davy's Grey is marked as granulating. Whereas Holbein's Davy's Grey is non-granulating. Do you notice this difference when you use them?

    • @kellyhoernig
      @kellyhoernig  Місяць тому +1

      I just double checked my sample and I don't see any granulation on the PWC. Remember though this is a tiny swatch and it wasn't given much area to expand.
