  • Hello friends!
    I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
    Today we are swatching and comparing quite a few different brands of PY129 Copper Azomethine Green (aka Green Gold): Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith, Maimeri, Rembrandt, Roman Szmal, Qor, Lukas, Daler Rowney, Old Holland and Wallace Seymour.
    Green Gold is an hidden gem for watecolourist. Great in mixes, it is also excellent for glazing. I would love to explain to you why I love it so much, swatching out different brands and mixing many color combinations!

    Ooooohhh…the Roman Szmal! 😍. I have DS and White Night’s version..neither of which I’m a huge fan. They’re ok and I just used the DS in a fall painting with my PO49, PO73 , PB29 & PR102 and mixed a few to make a olive green & brown. My girls are coming next month and we’re heading up to Buffalo where my younger daughter is to look at apartments. She said over the weekend she’s banning me and my eldest from going to a nearby art store “that’s got tons of your painting junk”-which, of course, means it will be the first place we visit. 😂. They apparently carry a lot of the European brands..so, putting aside some money, JUST IN CASE😁

    Pleasant surprise to see a new video from you. I appreciate your explanation for not posting for awhile. I have been going through similar things (very busy, feeling very sad about world events, etc). I really wish there was less conflict in the world. But art can be a good escape. I like Green Gold as a pigment. I have the Daniel Smith Rich Green Gold version only. I bet your database of colors is very impressive!

    Great review! I also think of Winsor & Newton as the benchmark, and I've been looking for the "best" brand for this pigment as well. One you may enjoy, which I recently discovered, is by Michael Harding. I find it to be the best of all that I've tried. Like you, Rembrandt has been my favorite, and Da Vinci also makes one I love, second to the Rembrandt, but the Harding version is just as exquisite, slightly more pigmented (although that is not important for me with this particular pigment), just as smooth and transparent as the Rembrandt. Where the Harding really excels is being more easily rewet after being left to dry on the palette, which is the way I prefer to use my watercolors. It is a about the same price, at least here in the US. Buying from Blick, both Rembrandt and Harding are about $1 per ml. However, I could be okay with only having the Rembrandt if I couldn't also have the Da Vinci and Harding versions. All are top-notch. It has become a core color on my palette!

    • @WatercolorElisabetta
      @WatercolorElisabetta  4 місяці тому

      Hi Rebecca!! Here in Italy Rembrandt is very affordable. I have tried some Michael Harding and it's wonderful paint!! I'm slowly building a collection but it's very expensive.... about Da Vinci, it's my pain point! I have tried some colors, and they are just wonderful, so easy to rewet, and loaded with pigment...the only problem is that they are not sold in Europe. So sad. Thanks a lot for your message I really loved reading it! Take care!

    It was lovely to see another video from you, Elisabetta. The situation in Gaza and Israel is horrifying…one feels so helpless! 🙏🏼Another artist UA-camr, Ifat Flowers, lives there and has posted a couple videos since last week, her voice heavy with sorrow over what is happening…also to her friends and family.
    I have Qor WN, and DaVinci in green gold. They’re all great and as you said, very similar. Looking at your swatches, though, the Lukas seems to glow…not chalky in the least! I have a few Lukas tubes and I do like them, especially their neutral tint which is made without the addition of any black pigment.

    • @WatercolorElisabetta
      @WatercolorElisabetta  9 місяців тому +1

      Jenneke, I think that Lukas suffers from bad word of mouth… tubes are very fine and they have great prices! Neutral tint is a great way to darken and mute colours, I like it better without black, thanks for telling me about Lukas. I will probably replace my current one with Lukas then when it’s over! Take care my friend.

    I do agree with you over Lukas, I have really enjoyed whatever w/c tubes I have had from them, I also have a halfpan set of 24, no complaints.
    Green gold is an essential colour for me, it adds such luminosity and warmth. I have several brands including your baseline W&N. I think I too use them as a baseline. Especially for naming of pigments!
    The very expensive Pip Seymour and DS seem very suitable for very large paintings, both are characterful.

    I love this color too and I have some brands wich I find interesting, like Sennelier's brown green, a PY129 a little softer than the others. Among the multipigmented, Gallo's green gold is very similar to the ones you have swatched. There are another line, more greenish and also multipigmented, that I love, like Daniel Smith's green Gold, Gallo's verde fico and Rosa Gallery's Aureoline Green. It is like a softer, yellowish olive green, ideal for the new born leaves in spring. And that's it, thank you again. Just remember that painting and loving colors don't harm anybody and help to ease our mind in these difficult times.

      Hey, I liked the Rosa gallery Aureoline Green too, it is lovely. I am quite a fan of using different brands for different purposes, Rosa are very flowy, and sometimes that’s what I want and if I want to paint without a lot of water, in a very immediate way, then that extra flowy ness works really well when other brands might seem a bit dry.

    The Rembrandt version is the one I have in my palette. I have the QoR, too, but I tend to go for the Rembrandt because it’s cheaper. I’ve swatched dots of a few other brands and like you, I’ve found there isn’t much difference between them.
    I don’t hate Lukas but I’m not massively impressed with their paints. They tend to be very chalky. I’ve heard the quality has gone down since they were sold and production was moved though, so maybe that’s why people have such strong feelings about it? At the end of the day, it’s only paint.

    • @WatercolorElisabetta
      @WatercolorElisabetta  9 місяців тому +1

      Ahaha you are so right! It’s only paint! Actually, I think Lukas is victim of a sort of watercolour mobbing…I know quite a few artists that use it in a beautiful way….Also, most brands swatched today are almost interchangeable, including Lukas! Take care!

    I have recently discovered green gold. Mixing it with perylene green gives the best sappy mixes. I dislike Lukas, I had some older tubes that I really enjoyed. Got a whole split mixing set and was so disappointed, after drying on the page the pigment turns powdery and wipes off the paper.

    I love the Daniel Smith Rich Green Gold, but I've had a problem with the bottom half of a 15ml tube drying rock hard inside. The cap has always been replaced correctly after use. I've only used a little for swatching and filling one full pan so far.
    I don't know if the hardened paint in the tube will be usable with some wetting until I use up the top half that has still remained soft. It's expensive paint, so this kind of thing shouldn't happen.
