Omg yes! I watched a watercolor swatch video and one color turned from a beautiful cobalt blue to drying with a bit of berry red in it. I watched it and gasped at how beautiful it turned over the span of a few minutes.
This comparison is unparalleled. Not only your in-depth information on consistency opacity and binder/additives etc. But doing a painting with each ( even sharing your technique 8 paintings is so cool) -- just great content Sarah... you're the best
I'm just curious if you would ever offer your own set of gouache at some point just like you offer brushes! With all this amazing research you've been doing, we trust what you think!
NOTE: Regarding the brand comparisons & water usage. This is purely experimental to compare the TRUE consistency of each brand, which is only possible if I use the *same* amount of water for each brand. In a "normal" painting session with any single brand, you'd use as much water as necessary to get it to work. So don't take my experiment as the end-all-be-all answer. They are all great to be honest. My comparison shows the inherent quality of each consistency - it's up to you to add as much water as needed to get it to perform how YOU like it. It's nearly impossible to compare so many brands without nitpicking little things. Any of these would be a good purchase, and so much of it depends on your technique. And yes I realize I switched the alphabetical order of Schmincke & Shinhan ...my brain stopped working after endless days of editing/narrating 😂 Anyways...enjoy!

29:51 For me the best way to prevent paint fungus or moho is: - Taking out the paint with a spatula from where you store it. - Putting 2 to 3 drops of essential clove oil in each well. - Wetting them with sterile water.
Holy cow Sarah! Such a great review! Thanks for the time and effort. Listening to your thoughts while watching you paint the lovely coastal seascapes was mesmerizing. And I never realized until this video that you had a gouache database. Cool! My conclusions about brands were so similar to yours, so I was happy to hear that from a more prolific, experienced gouache painter. I was particularly interested in your flow and stickiness comments. I paint differently with gouache, using more water, much like I would transparent watercolor unless I specifically need the opacity somewhere, so those observations were also valuable. This will be a video I and many others will return to often I predict. Thanks again!
Thank you Steve! I remember watching your gouache brand video a while back - though at the time I was exclusively using W&N so I was happy to see we shared a love for that brand 😁 I find your views on them interesting because I think you have a broad view of the painting industry (having done design and absolutely excellent at watercolors)
I used the Royal Talens gouache for a class as a requirement and another class required a few W&N gouache... The difference was staggering and I think you're spot on with your review, I had the exact same experiences. Thank you for taking the time to do this!
I just started with watercolor and now it’s making me question if I picked the right medium. Your swatches was so satisfying to watch. I like that you also included the prices. I’m ready to hoard me some gouache paint now and probably go broke with these supplies before I can use them.
One of the best art videos I've ever seen. Focused, informative, great pacing, no unnecessary fluff or forced chattiness (which drives me crazy). Watching you paint quick-yet beautiful-sketches using each paint brand, was especially helpful. I just became a huge fan! Thank you, Sarah!
31:35 Indeed, a CMYK + W set is 👍. I got the 5x Holbein set for less than 20£ at Jackson's when not on sale. I am in ❤ with it and confirm what Sarah says. A good quality set saves frustration and disappointment without breaking the bank, and teaches you to mix. I always get an extra white tube, as it is always needed. The Holbein starter set comes with a handy brochure with recipes to mix many colours. Well worth it! Thanks @SarahBurnsStudio. I am rewatching in 2024 as I consider getting some new gouache sets in the future. I was lucky to find some "good as new" Schmincke tubes for 5€ each so I could expand my collective n. I agree with you, they are really dreamy.
Wow that’s a great amount of research & testing of brands. I can definitely see a difference between the brands & the final results of each of the paintings. I really appreciate you doing this testing & making this gouache database. Thanks so much for sharing your time, thoughts, & knowledge of gouache!! 💕🎨😃
I've been painting only watercolors for a long time now. I really don't like paints like oil or acrylics, but sometimes I want to try other techniques. I've wanted to try gouache for a long time, I like this matte finish, but all those brands I bought were very cheap and they didn't give me the opaque I needed. I really wanted to try Holbein for a long time, since I've been painting with watercolors of this brand for a long time. I really liked your tests and now I can buy it without fear to try it out. This is probably the most unbiased video I've seen of gouache, thank you Sarah!
This is so good! Winsor and Newton are the first and only Gouache set that I've bought, I got them because of James Gurney, and they've been really nice! I'd be surprised if the honey based ones mold more easily considering honey is naturally antibacterial and as itself actually cannot mold or go bad.
Fantastic video! As someone with sensory issues, hearing how the paints feel when using them is so helpful for me! Like you have said, with enough time and effort, you can make any product work for you... but hearing your thoughts on the tactile experience and seeing how they behave in a painting is so helpful. Thank you for your hard work. I always love your insights!
Thank you for this awesome review! I just wanted to mention that in my limited experience M Graham gouache rewets better than the others I've tried. For those of us that don't paint with gouache often or just want to carry a tiny kit with some dry pans, it's a great choice for that reason.
This is such a great primer on the current prominent brands on the pro-grade gouache scene. I can tell you took the time to make it well. I was ready to buy one of the brands that you really didn’t like, so you not only saved me $$ but time and frustration, too. I know that everyone is different… but by helping me make more mindful choices, you’ve also made my painting experiences so much more fun. Come to think of it, all of your videos have done that for me 😉 Thank you, Sarah!
That's great to hear! The consistency thing is definitely very personal...to be honest the only one I didn't like was Royal Talens, so the rest are pretty close. But there were some clear 'winners' in my mind!
I'm so so glad you are reviewing Daler Rowney. It was hard looking for a review when I was thinking of buying them. It's one of the brands I can get my hands on very easily because they sell it in the art section of the bookstore in my city. Daniel Smith's are so expensive that buying just one tube feels like a splurge. It's hard to justify that for a hobbyist like me. But now that I get a validation (hahah) for DR I don't need to think about Daniel Smith anymore 🤣
The Daler Rowney is really nice to use and as long as you use the colourfast colours it should look great for decades. I think it's an amazing paint for the price and perfect for the person who mostly does sketchbook paintings or is a hobbyist.
As for the price of Schmincke's Horadam Gouache: if you have the chance: buy in Germany where it's from (Online shop 'Gerstaecker')! The price per tube starts at 7,96 Euro (22 of 48 colours) and goes up to 15,76 Euro depending on the colour you buy. As far as I can see, the most expensive colours from Winsor and Newton cost about 13 Euro, so that is not a to big difference. :) On the other hand, if you want to buy the american Daniel Smith in Germany, you start at 16 Euro per tube and end at 22 Euro depending on the colour. Totally not affordable. So it is really about where you live and shop. :)
This video is gorgeous! Yesterday I bought two holbein sets of guache. I also have and love their acrylic guache (what is mainly acrylic colors and not guache) and some Windsor and newton colors. First I thought „who needs this much colors!“ but seing you paint with all of them really make me want to paint and use them all! 😊🥰
Thanks! I was very tempted to try the Daniel Smith gouache, but no longer! ..... my bank account thanks you 😀 Great video and loving seeing your brushes in action❤
Very well done review - one might say: highly pigmented with information. Hmm just demonstrated I'm an old fart artist - readers - groan if you must - that's how old people roll - inflicting bad jokes on other 😁. Seriously - this is how paint reviews should be done. Not just swatching and opacity testing ...how the paint handles is critical for how well it will work for the individual artist.
Hi Sarah - thanks for this review. I can only comment of my experiences with Royal Talens, HIMI and Arteza gouache paints. I've been using Royal Talens for about two and a half years now. Arteza and HIMI were both trialled later out of curiosity and were both found wanting, particularly Arteza. What I have found interesting is that I haven't found any evidence of what you've described whilst using Royal Talens. I've found it to be really easy and creamy to apply and cover on many different surfaces with excellent blending and finished results. I realise that I'm not a professional artist, merely a very keen amateur. Even so, I find it fascinating that we've come to such polar opposites of opinion of the same medium. Bizarre.
Since I was doing a very specific comparison, I was using the same amount of water for all the brands (as little as possible) which showed me the inherent flow of each brand. This of course is meant to be an experiment to compare them all which is nearly impossible but I tried. In a more natural setting, adding more water than I did would make the Talens easier to use. Many of the comments here state this is the case. So you most likely added the appropriate amount of water to achieve that flow, which is good! Keep going!
thank you so much for taking the time to review these so thoroughly!! testing consistency as well as creating whole paintings with each was super informative, on top of the rankings and blog post 🙏🏼 i’ve only really tried winsor and newton so i’m glad to see you’re a fan 😛 looking forward to trying m graham and shinhan if i can find it in the future!
I'm halfway into the video, and I just wanted to say, it's informative enough to help me gauge what gouaches would work for me. The feeling of working with the gouaches, opacity, swatches, mixing, wetness, a demonstration of how they work from the tube, as well as a full illustration to show the outcome, and pricing. I like that the music isn't overwhelming the narration, that can easily make listening aggravating.
I've used oil paints, acrylics, and now watercolour. I have never tried gouache. Your review is really well done and your paintings are amazing. One of these days I will hopefully work my way towards trying gouache paint.
So much hard work! Thank you for the review. I am starting with guache and I can hardly describe how many research hours you saved me from 💕. The testing window is fun 😄
This is a wonderful review Sarah. Adore your paintings. Loved that Paul Clark recently gave you a shout-out as one of his favourite gouache artists. Nice to see artists supporting one another. Well deserved Sarah!
I don't even paint with GOUACHE (is youtube trying to say me something by suggesting this? :D ), but thumbs upped this instantly, 5weeks! and cant wait to see what GOUACHE is about.
I am starting to switch from just using pencils to using paints!i ordered himi miya gouache since many artist said that it is good quality despite its "cheap" price ,my gouache will later be shipped out and delivered in a day or two!❤❤❤i really wanna learn! subscribed!😊😊😊
Great video! Have you heard of/used DaVinci gouache? They are more known for their watercolors but seem very affordable for US residents, and they sell 37 ml sized tubes.
I thought this was a great comparison and review of the major brands available. What needs to be noted is that you are able to make any one of them look fantastic, something to aspire to! Now, I will watch the student Gouache comparison video. Thank you for taking so much time to help us learn!
This was one of the best reviews I've ever seen thank you so much, it was amazing and so informative. The artwork you showed with each was an absolute pleasure to watch as well. Thank you again ❤️.
This is the first video of yours that I’ve watched (found through a Google search!). It was very well done - the commentary was detailed and honest. I’ve been wanting to add gouache to my watercolour paintings - I’ve been doing florals with a simple, solid background and gouache seems the best option. Now I can feel confided in my purchase. Thank you for your time and effort in putting this together.
BEST VIDEO COMPARISON!!! I have a holbein mixing set I haven't even opened yet (as someone who wants to start painting from scratch) and I watched a million videos before I made a decision. For the past couple of days I've been tempted to get himi gouache because of the amount of paint you get and being a beginner with absolutely 0 knowledge of art and color theory, the mixing set intimidates me lol. I'm so glad I found your videos!!
I didn't have experience with gouache at all and I bought a lot of Talens gouache, the only available brand in the shops here ...now I now, why I have those problems with the paint...thank you Sarah for lightening up that bulb in my head and I now now that it is not my failure...
Wow! That was quite something!! What a lot of work you put into this video! Thank you so much! I guess I am lucky that I live in Germany. I know about the oxgall in the Schmincke paints but I will keep using it.
Thank you so much for this honest and gorgeous review! I've just received a Christmas voucher for some artistic product and since I'm craving to try some gouache for a while now, this review has helped me really really a lot to better understand which brand to choose from! I'm rushing to your blog to read all the other details you mentioned here! So I wish you a really great christmas and really really thank you for spending so much time making this deep and accurate comparison review! I appreciated it a ton!❤ with gratitude, Corinna
This is excellent information for those new to gouache or considering upgrading to brands better than student quality. I’ll be interested in your results with the mould tests. I use a stay wet palette with my gouache that has lasted for months before I noticed some mould. At that point, I just cleaned it out, sanitized and started over with fresh colours.
Thank you for the review! I am a totally newbie to Gouache and started with W&N yesterday. I thought about buying Royal Talens because it comes in bigger glasses to a very affordable price, but after your review and some comments here I rather buy Schmincke Horadam because I am from Germany (Schmicke is a german brand) and their Gouache is only a bit pricier (approx. 7€ per tube) than the W&N.
When I was just getting into gouache, I did a similar, though less extensive comparison of the major brands. My current fave is actually Royal Talens, so I think your opinion of it is very interesting. It might be because I don't paint large areas with straight paint with no water added. The texture of doing that just makes my skin crawl. 😬 Thanks for all of the aork you put into this! I'm sure I'll watch it again!
Annie, I also don’t use Gouache straight out of the tube with little water, even when I think my brush is almost dry it never really is so Talens with my workflow has a very nice consistency, the other brands I tend to dilute too much too easily 😊
Thank you for the in depth informative review! I am always surprised how much more expensive Schminke is in the US. I live in Germany and here it is 6.50 euros for a 20ml tube, and this includes 19% VAT, because in Europe it needs to be included upfront.
I love the beach scenes you created! I'm new to gouache and haven't seen any tutorials! I bought Winsor Newton gouache as I was beginning watercolor with the same brand... thank you for this most impressive review! Have a great day! ❤A California Gramma ❤
WOW! You are an excellent painter. I appreciate that you took the time to compare all of these paints and post this video of it all. I appreciate watching you paint. You are amazing. Thank you.
Hi Sarah. Jim again from Madrid (Spain). First of all, THANK you very much for this video. Second, it is very interesting and informative. It helps a lot to be able to better understand the differences between brands without the need to spend a large lump sum at the beginning. So thanks again for that. I've been using mainly W&N designers Gouache so far, but I will now be able to revisit some other brands to check them out (my budget on paint is split between watercolors and gouache so I am always trying to be smart on my costs). Again, thanks and even though I don't post everyday I always follow you in your UA-cam channel. Cheers from Madrid!
Thank you SO much for this review! The comparison is awesome! I'm so grateful for all the work and time you put into it! It's so, so helpful! 🙏 I've already watched it twice and will probably watch it another couple of times, at least. You're the gouache queen! 🙌👑
@@awatercolourist Oh! I'm so curious about that too! The problem is I know nothing about it, haha 😅 It's gonna be a lot of learning over the next few years 😊 Have you been painting with oil?
@@hannahthufvesson No, I’ve never tried oil paint. But I love the techniques I see on UA-cam. I don’t want to start painting in oils so the easiest thing is to go for gouache. Easy to clean, I can use it with my brushes and it’s still technically a watercolour. But that’s in the future, there is so much I want to learn with watercolours first.
@@awatercolourist I feel the exact same way! There's a painter, Peter Wileman, who's art inspires me so much! I found his book second hand and would love to explore that. I'm gonna switch between the mediums I think, I tend to need to shift and focus on something new from time to time, so that's my intention with this. I have some arteza gouache that isn't lightfast I'm planning on practicing with first. But I agree with you that there's so much to learn with watercolour! I'm really looking forward to the whole process. ☺️
@@hannahthufvesson Switching between art materials is actually a very good way to learn. I’m not sure what the logic behind it is, but I think it’s to keep things fresh. I remember at school one of the teachers told us to study each subject for 45-60 mins or so and switch to something else. There might actually be some science behind that, something to do with how the brain works or to keep it interested. Can’t remember to be honest.
thank you so much for this great review! And it is such a joy to watch you paint these beautiful sceneries😍 One word though to Schmincke Horadam gouache price issue: I live in Germany and Schmincke is a german brand. Here I would get the colours for 7,15 Euros for the white, yellow and blue and 11,75 Euros for the carmine, which is a different price group, buying them from an onlineshop named Gerstäcker, where I mostly buy my art supplies. So it probably matters most where you buy the paints. I really dont know why the price would be so high in other countries, since I get Winsor and Newton gouache for a decent price here. Also Schmincke has a Designers gouache as well which costs 6,02 Euros for 20 ml tubes, which performs very well too.
As someone who primarly used Royal Talens gouache this review was really insightful because it's the brand I only ever really used. I really want to try out Daler Rowney and Schminke now because your vid has given me many new insights! The stickyness of Royal Talens makes me wonderr if my past struggle with gouache wasn't just me. Thanks so much!
Awesome video! But I want to clarify the Schmincke Horadam is not per se the most expensive Gouache. Here in Germany (where it comes from) I pay less than half of the price you mentioned :) So it's the same price range as Daniel Smith and Holbein +/- :) Love your reviews!!! Thank you for this. Wanted to buy Daniel Smith Gouache so badly but I now won't due to your review, so I'm glad I don't miss out on something but also happy not have spent money to test myself. But want to try Shin Han though! :)
Thank you so much for this video! Thanks to you I upgraded my gouache to the Shinhan brand from the Himi jelly gouache. It is a night and day difference! So smooth and richly pigmented! I did find a Korean based seller on Amazon, so I was still able to get it in America. It’s at such a great price point, yet still delivers incredibly well performance-wise!
Thank you so much for making this. I really appreciate how much thought and organization you put into it. I’ve only tried a few gouache brands and discovered my favorite M. Graham had mold in the tubes (I have a bad mold allergy and realized using them was making me sick.) So I’ve been researching to see what brands I want to try next. Also thanks for your wonderful editing and for describing the sensory experience. I have sensory issues, so how you have described them helps me know which ones I want to try out. (I also have a bad habit of using gouache like watercolor by watering it down too much…..so knowing how it will perform straight out of the tube helps me out also.)
I like the patient way that you describe your process. I was having some anxiety a few minutes ago. I'm more at peace, now. I look forward to painting a wet on wet painting, soon.
So impressed that you put in so much time and effort to review all these products. I am using my Windsor and Newton Designer set. This Gouache is beautiful and they are a real step up again from the Student grade I used at College. Hearing your review on this Gouache is reassuring and I will replace them as tubes as I go. Looking forward to the mould review. Thank you for this review, so helpful.
I really liked winsor and newton and that one is the one i use, but in the US/Mexico(I Live in the border) is really expensive(17 dollars or more for series 4 paints ) i used to buy it at good price at Jackson art and get it shipped to me, but it seems now winsor and newton wont let them sell out of the US, So i might now try Shinhan and Schmicke since i can get them imported (in the US price are double for those too) Thanks for being a detective of gouache , appreciate all the hard work that goes into the videos it is a super useful resource for information and inspiration.
This is an awesome video, Sarah! Thank you for it! I live in France and here there is an extra-fine gouache that is highly recommended by many professional artists and superior art schools, the Linel Extra-Fine Gouache by Lefranc Bourgeois. It is Made in France (it has been for the past 300 years or so) and it is very affordable here. Have you ever heard of them?
Oh wow, this was eye-opening! So far I used Royal Talens gouache almost exclusively and found it to be extremely difficult to rinse off the brush. I assumed it was a characteristic of all gouache paints, but your video leads me to believe that it has more to do with dextrin being used as a binder. I'll have to compare them with Maimeri as they claim to use gum arabic. Thank you for the video!
I'm completely new to gouache and have picked up a HIMI set to get started. This video was a joy to watch and I've bookmarked it to refer back to when I'm ready to upgrade to nicer gouache piants. Thank you for putting it together!
I enjoyed it a lot, great painting along the way, each one better than the other. One thing: I was just trying to buy so.e and si ce most paints contain 15 ml, Schmincke does contain 20 ml. Which might explain the price difference. It is a quarter more in it. You are doing a great job Thank you for your time and effort
I've been rewatching some of these older videos of yours, also just watched your dried palette video. I'm still fascinated with the fact that the M. Graham, with its honey, dries faster than other gouaches; whereas you say here that the Daniel Smith dries faster than other brands when using out of tube, but then it ends up rewetting so nicely in your dry palette! Seems like a paradox. Thanks again for your tireless work on our behalf!
I'd love to try other professional gouache paints but for now I'm sticking with W&N cuz it's by far the cheapest option at 2,20€ per tube (previously 1,50€ so u can imagine how many tubes I've bought👀) I'm so happy you love these paints, gouache is my favourite medium and your channel is a huge inspiration to me💞
Thanks...I've been painting with Gouache for years and didn't know a lot of this info so I'm happy you made this video. M graham has been my favorite...😊
I personally love Holbein because I like to use two layers. An underpainting and then the finished painting. I love the opaque vibrant Color’s too. I’ve used Holbein oils, watercolours and acrylics too and they are my personal favourite brand
i do try to get daler rowney supplies when i can, but they dont always have colour i need,. i will tr to find their gouache and since its not a high price and might help me with gouache
I've only used two brands of gouache since I'm not one to paint with this medium. I love watercoloring more. I appreciate the effort you have put into this wonderful video. Not merely for the brand comparisons, but to see the process in your painting. Your small scenes are beautiful. This video is like having a lesson in gouache landscapes. I'm going to have to break out my tubes, and hope I closed them tightly. ❤😁🙏
I just got a set of Holbein 12 colors 15 ml tubes for $45 and I’m excited to try it out! One of my favorite artist uses this brand and his pieces looks creamy, opaque and matte.
Thank you so very much for the time you have taken to help your viewers/fans make informed decisions. This information is invaluable, especially when coming across an incredible sale of any or all of these brands, I will now know which would be a false economy, no matter the ‘deal’. Sending a huge hello to both you and your new employee 😊 from southern Scotland 🏴🖌👩🏻🎨🎨❤️
Such a great review, Thank You for all the time and effort you put into this. Working with the Himi and Arteza currently to just get brush mileage with a low cost price. This will be great advice for when I am ready to level up.
Excellent review. From your paintings here, I will try Holbein, Daler Rowney and Shinhan. I was especially impressed by your Holbein and Shinhan paintings. Straight up beautiful. Windsor & Newton needs to improve those tube caps.
Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us! I enjoyed watching it so much. And because I have a little experience with gouache my loving is coming back ❤❤
This video and the one on the cheaper brands was super informative, so thank you so much, I also have to say all the test paintings you did with all the brands are fabulous!
Sarah!!! I am so so so so grateful to your for this huge comparison video and your thoughts. For gouache you are my go to artist and I trust your word. Love your work. A massive thank you for putting in so much efforts for us and for teaching us everything you teach us.
This is such a comprehensive tutorial. I'm brand new to gouache. About a year ago I bought a 12 pack of Dale Rowney on super sale, only $5.00. I just opened it this week and am struggling with the amount of water to use. Lots to learn.
BRB purchasing Daler Rowney gouache asap…. My Holbein paints sadly were a bit disappointing and turned me off from using gouache… and that cap problem I totally relate! It dries soooo faaaast. Thanks so so much for the blood sweat and tears on this comprehensive video-it was worth the wait (been waiting since you announced it haha😅)❤
More than the thorough information was seeing Al of these paints in action and seeing all of your lovely paintings! Gorgeous! Would be a lovely post card set!
Wow! Great video! This took a lot of time and discipline so kudos to you. I'm not even a gouache user but I love color theory. Lol. I started out with watercolors but think I would like the opacity of gouache better, which is why I started following your channel; I just can't justify starting a whole new medium at this point. Nice to know I have a wealth of information at my fingertips if I do decide to make the jump to gouache.
It just occurred to me how excited I am to literally watch paint dry. Only fellow artists will understand 😂 thank you Sarah ❤️
🤣
SAME!!
Indeed 😂😂😂
made me smile - right backatcha :)
Omg yes! I watched a watercolor swatch video and one color turned from a beautiful cobalt blue to drying with a bit of berry red in it. I watched it and gasped at how beautiful it turned over the span of a few minutes.

I am rewatching in 2024 as I consider getting some new gouache sets in the future. I was lucky to find some "good as new" Schmincke tubes for 5€ each so I could expand my collective n. I agree with you, they are really dreamy.
god that first painting looks like a photo, girl you have become amazing
I'd be surprised if the honey based ones mold more easily considering honey is naturally antibacterial and as itself actually cannot mold or go bad.
it doesn't go mouldy for me, but I had ants eat my painting inside when I wasn't watching
I totally agree. I am grateful to be hearing about the sensory experience.
Thank you for this awesome review! I just wanted to mention that in my limited experience M Graham gouache rewets better than the others I've tried. For those of us that don't paint with gouache often or just want to carry a tiny kit with some dry pans, it's a great choice for that reason.
Great tip!
Same lol I was thinking of buying some royal talens tubes but now I think I'll stick to W&N
That’s great you can get it locally!
On the other hand, if you want to buy the american Daniel Smith in Germany, you start at 16 Euro per tube and end at 22 Euro depending on the colour.
Thanks!
I was very tempted to try the Daniel Smith gouache, but no longer! ..... my bank account thanks you 😀
Great video and loving seeing your brushes in action❤
Very well done review - one might say: highly pigmented with information. Hmm just demonstrated I'm an old fart artist - readers - groan if you must - that's how old people roll - inflicting bad jokes on other 😁.
Seriously - this is how paint reviews should be done. Not just swatching and opacity testing ...how the paint handles is critical for how well it will work for the individual artist.
Haha love it
Hi Sarah - thanks for this review.
Keep going!
Both gouache videos today are excellent! Thanks!
thank you so much for taking the time to review these so thoroughly!! testing consistency as well as creating whole paintings with each was super informative, on top of the rankings and blog post 🙏🏼 i’ve only really tried winsor and newton so i’m glad to see you’re a fan 😛 looking forward to trying m graham and shinhan if i can find it in the future!
You are so welcome!
Only getting into art now and this is so helpful for a newbie like me
I'm halfway into the video, and I just wanted to say, it's informative enough to help me gauge what gouaches would work for me.
Yes, Paul Clark led me here and I'm happy to have found Sarah Burns!
This is a really thorough comparison, thank you very much! Gouache tubes are pretty expensive so this is really helpful to know before purchasing 😊
Thank you for taking so much time to help us learn!
thanks for sharing this sarah ^_^ my favorite is schmincke horadam. love the consitency and opacity 💖💖 in germany its cheaper than is scotland 😅
This was one of the best reviews I've ever seen thank you so much, it was amazing and so informative. The artwork you showed with each was an absolute pleasure to watch as well. Thank you again ❤️.
Thanks so much for putting all the time and effort into this comparison.
What a resource! Thanks Sarah for putting SO MUCH work into this!
Your paintings are so lovely! I loved them all so much!
Thanks for this great review video. I’ve been doing watercolor for about a year and would like to try gouache. This was so helpful!
I appreciated it a ton!❤ with gratitude, Corinna
thanks for this comparison Sarah! Always a joy to see your videos and progress over the years.
Yep, we all have very different techniques. Like I said, use what you love! :)
Hi Hannah! 👋🏼 I’m not into gouache at the moment, but it’s something I’d like to try in the future. I’d like to use it with oil techniques.
I actually found your blog first before this video. Great to see painting in action!
thank you so much for this great review!
I got a set of Holbein for Christmas and love them. Gouache is so fun to paint with.
Believe me it's not just you, every time I've used talens gouache I've had a bad experience, this gouache makes the painting process frustrating.
Awesome video!
But I want to clarify the Schmincke Horadam is not per se the most expensive Gouache.
Here in Germany (where it comes from) I pay less than half of the price you mentioned :) So it's the same price range as Daniel Smith and Holbein +/- :)
Love your reviews!!! Thank you for this. Wanted to buy Daniel Smith Gouache so badly but I now won't due to your review, so I'm glad I don't miss out on something but also happy not have spent money to test myself.
But want to try Shin Han though! :)
Good point! If you live near the source you probably pay much less. Kind of like how people who visit Japan can stock up on Holbein super cheap!
I really liked winsor and newton and that one is the one i use, but in the US/Mexico(I Live in the border) is really expensive(17 dollars or more for series 4 paints ) i used to buy it at good price at Jackson art and get it shipped to me, but it seems now winsor and newton wont let them sell out of the US,
So i might now try Shinhan and Schmicke since i can get them imported (in the US price are double for those too)
Thanks for being a detective of gouache , appreciate all the hard work that goes into the videos it is a super useful resource for information and inspiration.
No I haven’t
Thank you for being such a 'gouache nerd'. Your efforts and high levels of nerdificaiton are greatly appreciated! 🤓😛
a Thousand Thanks Sarah! MUCH appreciated!!😍
Super helpful thank you! I am new to gouache and want to give it a go, so this is really helpful to know which brand to start with.
Well I used Royal Talens all my life in interior design but of course it should be diluted with water! That is why they call it opaque watercolors!
im so glad you talked about mold growth, i just lost half my HIMI set from mold
I enjoyed it a lot, great painting along the way, each one better than the other. One thing: I was just trying to buy so.e and si ce most paints contain 15 ml, Schmincke does contain 20 ml. Which might explain the price difference. It is a quarter more in it.
You are doing a great job Thank you for your time and effort
Please do brush comparisons or recommendations? 🥺 this was amazing!
Ive done that already :)
Have you tried Da Vinci Gouache? Blick and Cheap Joe;s sell it. Blick ships internationally.
i do try to get daler rowney supplies when i can, but they dont always have colour i need,. i will tr to find their gouache and since its not a high price and might help me with gouache
after watching this video I wanted to come back and say how grateful I am
I'm so happy to hear it!
Your hard work was a pleasure to watch and helped a lot. Thank you
I've only used two brands of gouache since I'm not one to paint with this medium.
This is the video I wish I had six months ago when I started getting interested in gouache! So glad this will be here for reference for the future.
Love your landscape art. It invokes pleasant feelings. ❤️👍
Glad to help!
Love your art! Would love to see you test Turners Design Gouache. It seems pretty nice to me.
I have a more recent video that includes Turners
@@SarahBurnsStudio Would it be possible to have a link to that particular review?
Whenever I watch videos like this I am always amazed by the huge difference in prices from country to country.
I'm new to gouache and to your site and now am a fan of both! What gems you are sharing!! Thank you!!
