Bruce Cockburn, as Always Excellent, one of the Best Guitarist,Songwriters, Singers, and Musicians ever, and a decent person too, a human being.Hartley C.
If it were the last night of the world I would sit under the stars with my horses and dogs and listen to my favorite songs...including this one. Thank you, Bruce, for some of the best songs in my life soundtrack!
I grew up listening to him thanks to a wonderful local radio station KINK fm Portland. I didn't realize at the time how it would later influence me. Such a wonderful talent I'm just now rediscovering.
I hear you. You've got to listen all of his songs. He's the best songwriter ever. Check out " child of the wind." His first album " Maybe the Poet is gay." The album Slice O Life " hungry in the City". There are so many. I've followed him since around 1982. Enjoy...great guitarist too. Thank you Bruce
If you Love Bruce, besides being an amazing guitarist, you know he's also a brilliant poet/lyricist. What's so amazing about this song, is that you don't notice (at least I didn't foe some time), that there are no rhymes in the verses. The only rhyme is in the chorus. Genius.
Well, thank God we made it through today, but if it had actually been the last night I'd have spent it with this song, my wife, and a bottle of champagne... Thanks again Bruce for such great music!
He usually "hides" around Toronto, but he's been on the music scene for a Loooong time. I've only seen him LIVE twice (in '90 and '11) He never disappoints, but don't expect typical radio to play Bruce....
The story behind this song...which he shared at one of the shows I saw him play...Reno, I believe: .He was tromping around one evening with a friend(Sam Phillips) and she noticed his daypack was full of things like rope, flashlight, first aid kit, etc....she asked him why and he responded something along the lines of 'well, i want to be prepared when the apocalypse hits'....she responded with ' i would want a bottle of champagne and two glasses'....or something like that.
So nice, to see him really enjoying himself with those little wry and subtle "cat who ate the mouse"... not grins...but barely perceptible smiles, as much to himself, as to those watching.....almost like he's enjoying some little inside joke. Absolutely brilliant.
I'm sipping Flor De Caa* and lime juice, it's three a.m. Blow a fruit fly off the rim of my glass The radio's playing Superchunk and the friends of Dean Martinez Midnight it was bike tires whacking the pot holes Milling humans' shivering energy glow Fusing the spaces between them with bar-throb bass and laughter If this were the last night of the world What would I do? What would I do that was different Unless it was champagne with you? I learned as a child not to trust in my body I've carried that burden through my life But there's a day when we all have to be pried loose If this were the last night of the world What would I do? What would I do that was different Unless it was champagne with you? I've seen the flame of hope among the hopeless And that was truly the biggest heartbreak of all That was the straw that broke me open If this were the last night of the world What would I do? What would I do that was different Unless it was champagne with you?
pry (2) [prahy] Spell Syllables verb (used with object), pried, prying. 1. to move, raise, or open by leverage. 2. to get, separate, or ferret out with difficulty: to pry a secret out of someone; We finally pried them away from the TV. noun, plural pries. 3. a tool, as a crowbar, for raising, moving, or opening something by leverage. 4. the leverage exerted.
"Flor De Caña is renowned as one of the best rums in Latin America, having won more than 150 international awards since 2000 and has been the most award-winning rum brand during this period..." And it's 'pried loose'.
got to know bruce and his music back in the 80s.. wow..maybe this music and his views about this planet should be required listening for every industrialist and would be polluters of our beautiful planet.. .. ahh, just a dream I guess.. to bad though... He's got some great points..
Add the wind turbine industry to that list of (visual) polluters. It's politically-correct landscape destruction on a vast scale. Ontario's farmers have learned it the hard way.
Ray Dale I used to listen to him back in the 80s, Lovers in a dangerous time, he was singing about, Nicaragua & El Salvador, great political music, he's still got it.
My favorite BC song I think, I say "think" because what a fantastic song writer, musician, and singer. His songs are both deep and accessible which is an art in itself. Love this live version.
Welcome to 2017 and yes some idiot wants to build a wall on our southern border and it's the president of the US Donald J Trump. No it's not a joke, no it's not a bad dream, it's reality. I think Bruce was right in preparing for the apocalypse.
hopefully it will only be you and your family who meets up with the likes of MS13...they come as they please and they dont give a rats azz about you or your family...ever seen a head get chopped off?...didnt think so@@billyboy6028
God, I love Bruce. I've seen him only once in concert, but as soon as humanly possible, I'm going again. That night pretty much cemented the unflappable notion that I physically NEED to be a professional musician in my soul. It was amazing. If you haven't seen him live yet...you really must. It's relatively life-changing!
Seen him 9 times so far, and some epic small settings as well. One of the best was at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver back in 1979; $3.00 admission, Wondering Where the Lions tour... Four rows from the front... On and on and on... This song seems fitting.., You heard?
I've got the champagne chilling my love. If this is it, we'll have to enjoy it on the other side. The love I have for you is for all of eternity. It's the law in my heart.
@BrokenSolitary I don't know where you live, but I saw him in boston last spring and will see him again in Newburyport Mass the 17 of sept. Ya, he is great live. He had a woma violin player in Boston.
Liking all I hear, with Dr. B.Cockburn on UTUBE ! I know all this music and not the mans name. I have trouble with remembering names. Mimi was here, hey look out for raining guitars...just kidding. Shout OUT to my Canadian friends ! Out!
UA-cam.com People , the Original Bruce Cockburn Video/Audio Stereo HIFIdelity is in 480progressive NOT your poor 240p Inadaquate mode, or else later in 2012 on this Webpage I will Upload the HD 720p Version, so stay tuned!!!!
@ABlandino Been playing his music since I was 8, or trying to anyways. 10 years of playing later and his genius still eludes me, and most likely shall for some time.
Story behind the song? The version I heard is he was dining with a woman, possibly Aimee Mann and she asked what he had in his backpack, he said rope and other stuff for the end of the world. She laughed and said if it was the end of the world, she would only be drinking champagne with the one she loved.

Where have I been that I've only just found this awesome guy!! His music fills such a massive void in my heart, I can listen forever!!
Happy you discovered him. Absolutely love him!!!!!!!
I grew up listening to him thanks to a wonderful local radio station KINK fm Portland. I didn't realize at the time how it would later influence me. Such a wonderful talent I'm just now rediscovering.
Enjoy catching up. He has an amazing body of work!

I loved if a had a rocket launcher many years ago, but I had noticed him beyond that. My loss. He is remarkable.😉
Omg this came across my feed. This is such a beautiful video. I know a lot of these people. I know Mark just a beautiful song. Brought me to tears
Killer band. Understated.....they stay out of Bruce's lane, but man are they locked into the groove.
This was our millennium theme song, as my late wife said "if it is the last night of the world what else would we want to do?"
If you Love Bruce, besides being an amazing guitarist, you know he's also a brilliant poet/lyricist. What's so amazing about this song, is that you don't notice (at least I didn't foe some time), that there are no rhymes in the verses. The only rhyme is in the chorus. Genius.
Love this man
😂
Mr. Cockburn is a national treasure.
World Treasure
Well, thank God we made it through today, but if it had actually been the last night I'd have spent it with this song, my wife, and a bottle of champagne... Thanks again Bruce for such great music!
Understood
"AH,HA Suns up , looks ok , guess we made it through to another day...." - B Cockburn
Great value to hear from Bruce and band🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Bruce was a close friend and disciple of MARK HEARD - Macon Georgia Musician who wrote songs like this one. Excellent!
Yes, any Bruce fans will likely enjoy Mark Heard. Phenomenal songwriter, Great singer and guitarist. One of my all time faves.
I love Bruce Cockburn. I have since the 70s. Tokyo. He is a very underrated artist
I saw bruce in saskatoon in 2012. He is the most amazing musician ive ever watched.
Finally a live version here loud enough to hear on my phone in the office!
Okay....that was the 50th time through. I think I can quit now....well, maybe one more. Damn.
Great music! Where has he been hiding all these years?
He usually "hides" around Toronto, but he's been on the music scene for a Loooong time. I've only seen him LIVE twice (in '90 and '11) He never disappoints, but don't expect typical radio to play Bruce....
...and if you liked this, you'll love "Pacing the Cage" also posted by tarkineWild.
Thank you for the info. Will listen to that song now.
you'll love it. He's one of the best singer/songwriters ever. Listen to his lyrics...and the great bass player. smooth......
The "she" in the story was Sam Phillips; they toured together in the 90's. She is just as enigmatic as Bruce.
Make's me think of my good friend who went to council in the 70's, always said he'd grab a six-pack of Old Milwaukee, sun glasses, and a Lawn Chair.
Brother Dave hit that nail on the head. I recall Bruce telling the story of him and Sam when he played the Birchmere in the 90s.
That somebody who responded to him that way was none other than Sam Phillips, who toured with him in the early 90's.
I thought it was Shawn Colvin that he was talking with...and she sang the background vocals on the studio recording
I listen to this every couple weeks and it always brings shivers down my spine..AMAZING BRUCE..
So nice, to see him really enjoying himself with those little wry and subtle "cat who ate the mouse"... not grins...but barely perceptible smiles, as much to himself, as to those watching.....almost like he's enjoying some little inside joke. Absolutely brilliant.
He was playing in theatre st Denis in Montreal .I went to see him once there, it blow my mind and my girl friend of the time also
great artist, great song, great performance
yep a definiate artist ...love what he does or leave it ...up to you ,,,if you have ears ya gotta love ...it's magic ...!!!

making music into art...the right way to go...thankyou bruce...

+Be Love That was a remarkably detailed response... perhaps I am wrong.
it's about context surrounding the lyrics
"Flor De Caña is renowned as one of the best rums in Latin America, having won more than 150 international awards since 2000 and has been the most award-winning rum brand during this period..."
And it's 'pried loose'.
Best version of all

If it weren’t for industrialists you wouldn’t have a car or a garage door opener
Awsome songwriter/musician
