I saw Bruce at the Australian National University in 1989. Brilliant then. Brilliant now. Pity the world has not learnt from his wonderful lyrics. I only discovered this song last week. Can't stop playing it.
Glad Australians have heard Bruce. He's been my favourite since 84' when I was in my mid teens and was first introduced to his music. He's an officer of the Order of Canada. His songs speak of compassion and his actions show that compassion. Besides being a fantastic singer/songwriter/guitarist he's a man of his word.
Bruce is a talented and gifted voice of gentle dissension in a world of mediocrity... what would you do that was different if it were the last night of the world... lift a glass to Bruce Cockburn....
So amazed at Bruce's longevity and the incredible volume of his repertoire. Very diverse too. No two albums really ever sound too similar. Truly the sign of a great artist.

Best thing that came out of Canada since General Brock and SCTV and MacKensie, beautiful songs from this album. I hum these songs and send them to my girlfriends . Wow !

I'm sipping Flor De Cana and lime juice, it's 3 A.M. Blow a fruit fly off the rim of my glass The radio's playing Superchunk and the friends of Dean Martinez Midnight it was bike tires whacking the pot holes Milling humans' shivering energy glow Fusing the space between them with bar-throb bass and laughter If this were the last night of the world What would I do? What would I do that was different Unless it was champagne with you? I learned as a child not to trust in my body I've carried that burden through my life But there's a day when we all have to be pried loose If this were the last night of the world What would I do? What would I do that was different Unless it was champagne with you? I've seen the flame of hope among the hopeless And that was truly the biggest heartbreak of all That was the straw that broke me open If this were the last night of the world What would I do? They say music is therapeutic. That album helped me endure a difficult phase of my life. Not avoiding it, but taking a deep look at it. Everything changes and if you are lucky you can ease the changes in a positive direction.
@Ms Laurie Darlin ...he goes out and plays an amazing show for two long sets...then hangs around after to meet fans...in his late 70s? Who else does that? Wow.
@@brettservice640 I lived in Florida once upon a time and saw him in Miami… Just a regular Joe who sat in on a gig in a pub… it was truly a peak experience… All his music peers straight through the heart and lights into the soul like a whisper…but this song….it stops Time.
Its a pity that this song wasn't released earlier than 1999. Because it would have fit perfectly with this low budget Don Mckellar movie called "Last Night" which was about the last night of the world in Toronto. It was a very chilling, very thought provoking and very Canadian movie(I mean that in a good way).

I have always thought this is a great song, however I don't think the video does it justice. Focusing too much on young people, or whatever the market is all about these days, why not just depict an interlude that reflects what the song is really about?
This song always sends shivers down my spine and tears rolling down my face. It’s beautiful!
Will always love Bruce and will always be honored to have met him 🎶🎵🎼❤️🙂
New Year's Eve 2024- sent to all my grown kids

I'd like to hear Bruce and Colin Hay do a tune or two together.
Bruce is so unknown to most I find it almost a tragedy!

On of the best comments i've ever read...
His phrasing, along with his guitar playing and song writing, is superb. That last verse…

Bruce Cockburn has been around long enough to have something to say, I'm a fan.
Bruce says more in one song than most singer/songwriters say in a whole album.

A true poet, and musician

heck yes:: bruce is the king-of-rock;

Also, the bass player, the tone & volume in the mix R Rad!

Thanks Bruce for putting up a nicely mastered version of this and other videos!

who's here in 2024? cheers

Should have put a lead guitar solo in this tune, though I love the tune & the way he does it to death!

the man.. yeah.. idk some of the video taken in Toronto? I'm scheduled to see him on the green at Whistler in 2 days..
I was there for that. Free show..I drove up from Oregon. Only other time I saw him live was mid-90s Santa Fe NM.
I went out and bought a bottle of Flor de Cana after I heard this song.
And I went out and bought a Friend's of Dean Martinez CD (I already had Superchunk)😃
I did too.
Doesn't this have the third verse cut? I'm a little bummed... But it's a great song/video for 2020 either way.
What would you do that is different?
maybe make a few calls, haha, hey how's it goin', y'all?

Yep! Great ending to his concert.

he has a simple, beautifully succinct, artistic and poetic way of “gettin' to it” when he does a love song, eh?
