Hi Jeff, Thanks again for the videos. I'm in the process of making an impact mill myself. One question I have been struggling with is the output screen. If I want 50 mesh coming out does my screen need to have 50 mesh holes? When you say yours is putting out -50 mesh dust, is that the average size, or is that what your screen will allow. I don't know how to get a 50 mesh screen that would have any strength to withstand the rocks hitting it. I can get 1/8" or 1/16" punch plate easy enough.
Hey Doc see you've scaling-up your impacter from the baby mill you had before... NICE job too! If your anything like me you'll soon realize you also need a jaw crusher & ball mill or the processing gets bottlenecked something fierce. If you run that baby dry get yourself a cyclone dust separator system for your shop vacuum or expect to stop & clean filters every 3 to 5 mins. Using it wet can rot the metal/make issues with second grinds or sieving. Just what the doctor ordered though;)
I thought I was being clever an built a hand unit out of galvanized pipe. You know - Tin can get you pretty excited until you figure out that it's the galvanizing coming off. Your device looks to work a lot better than the hand unit I built (3 " black iron [now] with a 1-1/2" pestle). It works but not without some sweat! Good job - especially pointing out a different screen location and rock feed design details.
Ok, I watched the video with a neck brace on and I really liked the technical presentation of your machine. You are like the mad scientist of Rock Crushing for Gold. Yet another great video and I admire all of your work. Keep 'em coming.! Tell Slim I said Arrrrrrgggggghhh.! We understand each other very well.. hahaha..
Thanks for the video Jeff. Would it be possible to get a complete parts list for building this. Specifically I would like to know how to make the plate that slides on the 1 inch shaft. Thanks
If it is A36 steel pipe you can heat it up with an oxy-acetylene torch with heating tip until a magnet will no longer stick. Have a tub of water, say a no3 metal tub with something for pipe to sit on at the bottom. After pipe is heated pick it up with a couple pair of channel locks with welding gloves and full face shield - this puppy is going to be hot! Place in tub quickly and get back. Water will probably boil, so wear appropriate clothing. Remember to have as much welding done beforehand as this changes the crystalline structure as well.
Awsome video man, good stuff man, this thing is bad to the bone, going to build myself one right away, love to see it in action cant wait for the video, i am a prospector up in yukon territory have myself a promising claim, will keep you updated on the progress, havent gotten out much yet this summer it has been way to hot out! but this month boy i tell ya we are gonna go hard! heading out tomorrow to try out my highbanker set up should be a good time! untill next time take er easy Jeff. Nathan
Jeff i am planning on putting the exit port on the side. But wouldn't that damage it more from rocks constantly hitting it trying to get out? Thank you.
Wow, I didn't know you were a mechanic?! My dad owns an 8 bay tire shop and we do a lot of wrench turning. But, I have never seen so many books on different cars and parts until the video started. I am a newbie gold prospector if I am qualified for that level yet!! I have panned about 10 pans and zero yellow yet, well, I have had plenty of yellow mini pebbles in my pan. It is very frustrating but I will not give up! I have just the bare minimum tools so far but I enjoy being in a creek panning. I hope to have a mine lab gold monster 1000 soon. It is difficult to find gold without one! Anyway, it is cool that we have a few things in common. I changed the big rig truck and farm tires for 20 years and it broke my body down so now I have a ton of free time. I need some help first off with just knowing the names of the rocks and different ways they mix so I can find good rocks to crush and not waste time on junk rocks. Oh, My dad was born in Arizona I think. Not sure that is your home state or not but we also share the same great last name 😀! Could you please point me in the right direction of a book or website that gives really good pictures so I may learn faster?? I know a lot more already then I would have by watching your videos but that is not saying much for me. I never panned before the end of last week. I basically went and bought the Garrett kit with a half inch classifier and 2 pans. I am getting use to panning itself but I am sure to learn much more and develop my own style. I know you say go where mining has already happened. But, I have a creek running through my land and I wanted to make this my training grounds. A friend of mine assures me that gold has been panned on down the road from me on his land. I am just learning the ropes of where to look. There was a huge flood last year and it washed 15ft high place out of my bank and the water went very high on the land near the creek. I am not sure if I should pan where the water maxed or stay near the bedrock? Any help will be much appreciated!!! I hope to find some yellow shiny in my pan today!! And yeah, I'm gonna get wet! Sorry for the massive comment but I have watched soo many videos that I feel like I have known you for years! Once I learn the ropes I hope to come out and spend 3 days learning more!! I hope to get an ounce of gold this year to complete a goal. I may set it higher and so on because I already love the hunt for gold!
Jeff, there is something... buried.... done deep inside of ya... that just aint all there... Ha ha ha and that's what keeps me coming back for more.. Well, that and I do learn a lot from you! Always appreciate you, your knowledge and your good humor..
Hi Jeff, A question... When you said you would put the out-port for your crusher-pulverizer "on the side next time" did you mean higher up on the curve where rock would not accumulate -or- did you mean that the best design is on the perpendicular side, the side with the bearing mounts? Thanks.
Mary Theodosis Hi Mary that was the hardest part to build . It is two 1/4 inch plates welded to a hardened steel shaft with the ends machines for the pillow blocks. Jeff
Also you can do few lines of hard welding about using special electrodes. but you have to heat the chamber while welding and do some heat treaatment. I think just heating by acytilene gas will suffice your requirement as it is not critical job. However thanks for your videos, very informative on every aspect .
I am building a brand new one as we speak, it's 20 inches around drum and 14 inches long, 4 inch feed sitting on 3 inch square tubing, I am about to make my shaft that holds the chain the problem I see or maybe it's not a problem looking at yours is it looks like it would be out of balance and wondering if I should quad the shaft then just having the 2 chain holders you have there, do you have problems with noise shake and vibrations other than normal chain noise ? Going to be doing the shaft tomorrow so any help would be appreciated tonight if possible from you or anyone who has built one
Well, that would explain it. Hows it going? Where are you located? (state). I'm in Nevada, got my Garrett Gold Pan Kit on its way, should have it in a day or two. Thanks for the great videos.
Question is there a lid to keep the rocks from falling out while the rocks are being crushed.Or do the rocks crush at a low speed. You are a vary talented person.keep up the great videos.
Jeff, how long would it last in the field? eventually the inner wall will be hammered and decreased, so after how many tons I'll be in need to reconstruct?
Jeff, all your videos are awesome, problem is I've watched just about all of them, I'm worried I'm going to run out, but that's ok I'll watch re-runs their so good! Keep up just the way your doing it, great job!
Jeff! What do you do if the material is a bit damp going in? Would it be prudent at that point to want to have a punch plate in the bottom and feed water into the top to then liquify the slurry so it drains out as it won't be "dusting out"? Actually.. you know what I just thought of--- even if hte surface of the material may be wet the huge bulk of the material would be dry.. so as long as your material is "SOAKED" and covered in 2" of mud you're probably gonna be okay. You might have to pop the front off from time to time to scrap out the "wet-hardened" dust that didn't dust up and out of the screen on the side? Does that make sense. I just won a 5hp Briggs & Straton engine off of the local auction that's begging to be turned into a rock crusher like this!
Hi again Jeff Thanks so much for posting this video. I followed your example and built one very similar. My first trip was very encouraging and I am looking forward to more. My next question is do you use a spiral wheel or a shaker table to clean your crushed ore? The crusher does a great job breaking down the ore but there is a lot of it to process. Just wonder what you advise please?
Jeff in the video you say the only bad design is that the screen should be on the side wall. You suggest putting the screen on the side rather than the bottom. Will the crushed particles still exit the crusher if the screen is on the side? Doesn't it need to be on the bottom as you already have it? Surely the crushed rock will fall to the bottom not the side? Thanks John
John Egan Hi John, the particles are rotating around in the drum at 1700 rpm and the finer particles will get slung out the side screen while the heavier, larger ones will stay in to be pulverized. Jeff
Nice video Jeff. Considering rock a crusher, as the gold bearing area near my house has gold locked in quarts. Not much but it is there. "Use the force" dates you man, I grew up saying that too....have a good day Jedi
hi mr. jeff. i found your crusher interesting.i would like to bulid something like this but of different use. I am looking for a way to pulverize a coconut shell. I assume it would work but I am not sure. Do you think using also chain can pulverize the coconut shell? what are your suggestions about it?
Hi Errol for that I would use what is called a Coconut Grinding machine. Here is a link to one but if you want to make one I think a hammer mill would work better then a flail mill which is what we have built. Jeff www.coconutmachine.com/index.php?mid=72&p=products-item&id=6
+Vladimir Nachev trust me they will get beat to a fine mesh size and the Gold if bigger then the screen will stay in the drum so it is important to clean it out after each run. Jeff and Slim
Hi Kyle what we have noticed is that yes it would collect at the bottom but would be pulverized eventually to be blown out the side screen. Now what happens is the material collects at the bottom and the larger harder rocks ( i.e. iron, quartz ) sit on the punch plate and slowly distort and bend the punch plate until small pockets form acting as traps for more material to get hung up so the punch plate must be changed out on a regular basis. We will be moving it to the side to make it more efficient . Then we will offer them for sale. Jeff Jeff
hey nice machine, how did you balance the shaft? Also what size gas motor would it take to run? My gen is to small for that but would love to have it on my claim. Thanks for the vids have learned some great stuff and will pass it on to my Grand kids.
G'day Jeff, I enjoy your style! Mate is there a preferred gap/chains to casing, both up down an sideways? or is it, give it some clearance and she'l work fine??
Thanks sooooo much for the video Jeff. I've always wondered how these rock crushers worked and the one you have built seems like a great design. Good job on the weldiing!!
I have a possible fix for your bottom mounted screen. cut a piece of steel slightly larger than the screen hole and mount it just a quarter inch or so above the screen hole so the material has to enter around the side of the screen hole.
Hi Jeff, is there a pdf file or a document about this machine that you prepared? If you dont mind to give a copy of it, it will help me a lot in my senior thesis project as mechanical engg student... i will include it in my related studies... thanks :)
+adrian agunday no...not yet but we are working on a rough draft of it due to popular demand. They are very easy to construct and the only real challenge is to calculate proper tip speed. Jeff and Slim
Jeff are you getting a bigger budget for your videos? They keep getting more entertaining(intro) and educational. My cousin and I were talking about buying or building one our self, thanks Chris
Quartz with gold in it takes many appearances. I found a rich lode with no visible gold that assays up to 3 oz./ton with 5/8 oz./ton being the low end. Generally, quartz with gold is dirty not snow white; brown, black, rose, grey are inviting colors on the rock. Also, sugar quartz is good, crumbly quartz is good. Have it assayed or learn to assay.
looks fairly easy to build, I have about 3 buckets full of ore from old mine sites I am dying to see whats inside. Do you ever prospect the bumblebee area?
Dave T you can but it tends to clog unless you run a water flush on it while running. we run it dry not as much of a mess. Ball mills are designed to handle more material then an impact or flail mill. Jeff and Slim
Ah yes, bloody good film old chap
Awesome build my brother i wish i had the room for one like that. You are so darn good at building anything
thanks
What size are the holes in your punch plate?
They are simpler than I thought! Can't wait to make one of these
Hi Jeff,

this must be the third time I have watched this one and I still enjoy it and see something that I had missed before
Thanks Paul. we do plan on making a follow up on that one too for all the people out there that want to build one. Jeff
thanks for the lecture doctor williams on rock 101 .nice presentation. another great job their jeff..thats what i call class.
Thanks for the video.
This seemed like light promotional video but has really sound logic.
It could be an inspiration for future designers!
Glad you liked it!

Watching these old videos, I cannot wait, for halloween this year!
Me too!!
Another outstanding video, Jeff. Great job. Keep them coming!
OK Jeff, that introduction was COMPLETELY over the top!!! loved it!
Thanks, always like being over the top.

I like the way you explained the way crusher works and the do's and don'ts . I was looking forward to this one thanks GL HH ;-)

Nice and funny bit to keep folks watching Jeff ;) ;)
thanks Jeff good video now i know how a rock crusher works . and yes i need one too !
Would love a video on how to identify quartz with gold to crush. A good start to finish video. keep making the great videos!
Do you have a set of plans with material needed and where to get the materials. Can they be purchased.
Kim Kimball not yet but we are working on them. We use to sell them but was to expensive.

Your channel is doing good I googled rock crusher build and got one of your videos
Jeff i am planning on putting the exit port on the side. But wouldn't that damage it more from rocks constantly hitting it trying to get out? Thank you.
no .....its better on the side
Thankyou jeff , for the good helpfull information on the rock crusher , looks good .
You bet
I could use one of toughs rock crushers i have been saving rocks that i think have gold in them.Have you used that one yet ?
thanks for the info!!!...I will be building one soon!!....

Thanks for the comments, I am glad you like our vids with all of it's crazy madness but the secret is....I like fun videos too. Jeff
Jeff..enjoyed your vid. How do you adjust the chain length? ore is it not critical. Cheers.
would those add~a~link cause a vibration if they are not run through the plate directionally the same?
Jeff, do you have the plans for the impact mill. I would like to see what gauge and dimensions some of the steel is that you used.
***** Hi Troy , we will be making another vid on the exact dimensions of the mill as it is a frequent question.
Jeff and Slim
Very cool Jeff. I wounder how productive the old stamp mills were.
Hi Jeff, A question... When you said you would put the out-port for your crusher-pulverizer "on the side next time" did you mean higher up on the curve where rock would not accumulate -or- did you mean that the best design is on the perpendicular side, the side with the bearing mounts? Thanks.
***** exactly,.a side port would be better and the best place for the feeder tube is on the back like we have it.
Jeff and Slim
Can't wait to see how you run the material through a shaker table.
Very well presented.
How do you build the armature? How are the wings attached to the 1 inch shaft?
Mary Theodosis Hi Mary that was the hardest part to build . It is two 1/4 inch plates welded to a hardened steel shaft with the ends machines for the pillow blocks.
Jeff
Also you can do few lines of hard welding about using special electrodes. but you have to heat the chamber while welding and do some heat treaatment. I think just heating by acytilene gas will suffice your requirement as it is not critical job.
However thanks for your videos, very informative on every aspect .
Hi Jeff, is the goldcube just as good a shaker to process your crushed quartz.
Thanks
Bill
Hi Bill in my opinion a shaker table can get the more fine( 200 mesh ) Gold but for the money the cube is worth it with little Gold lost. Jeff
***** do you have a shaker table? I used one at the mine.
OMG, you sure have changed Jeff. After watching so much of your current stuff (Oct/2016), it took me a few seconds before I recognized you.
I know ...right....hanging around Slim all the time and look what happens.
JS
Well, that would explain it. Hows it going? Where are you located? (state). I'm in Nevada, got my Garrett Gold Pan Kit on its way, should have it in a day or two. Thanks for the great videos.
we are in Nevada too and let us know how you like the kit.
JS
Will do. If your not to far away, maybe we could meet up sometime.
Yes, quite a good job, indeed. Chip chip cheerio my good lad. "If you want to turn your rocks into dust, then a rock crusher is a must."
Question is there a lid to keep the rocks from falling out while the rocks are being crushed.Or do the rocks crush at a low speed. You are a vary talented person.keep up the great videos.
What kind of carriers are you using for the shaft?
3 bolt Pillow Block Bearings. Jeff
Very nice! What are you using for the mesh? And what keeps it from being damaged? Do you harden the case?
Jeff, how long would it last in the field? eventually the inner wall will be hammered and decreased, so after how many tons I'll be in need to reconstruct?
+Ahmed El Khawaga not sure we have been using it for a while know with out and degradation.
Jeff and Slim
Great video my friend. Entertaining and educational.
Where can one purchase the flail chains for the impact crushers at a reasonable price?!
Also, you did drop down the RPMs and bring up the torque with the belt sizings?
***** yes we did.
Jeff and Slim
Jeff, all your videos are awesome, problem is I've watched just about all of them, I'm worried I'm going to run out, but that's ok I'll watch re-runs their so good! Keep up just the way your doing it, great job!
Thanks...we will and thanks for watching our work ...we have more on the way.
I hear ya - I'm going in reverse chronological order, and I'm already at the 3 year mark. I guess that's about half or so?
Could you provide a general list of building materials needed to build the rock crusher?
I would like to see it work. Also how far up the side should the screen be?
I would place the screen about 1/3 the way up. Jeff
Thanks . Do you have planes for this. If do are you going to post them?
we have thought about it but it is right now very far down on the list but we will be running it here soon with better explanation.. Jeff
Jeff! What do you do if the material is a bit damp going in? Hi again Jeff
Thanks so much for posting this video. I followed your example and built one very similar. My first trip was very encouraging and I am looking forward to more. My next question is do you use a spiral wheel or a shaker table to clean your crushed ore? The crusher does a great job breaking down the ore but there is a lot of it to process. Just wonder what you advise please?
John Egan we have used a Gold cube but also like using a RP-4 shaker table.
Jeff and Slim
i enjoy all of your videos. that is definitely one well made crusher. great design.
Very enjoyable to listen to your advice! Nice video!
Epic rap battles quote of Dr Who.. Excellent delivery. And yes. I need a rock crusher..
***** really glad you caught that. We always put small clues or additional info or references in our films.
Jeff and Slim
Great vids Jeff . Entertaining and informative .
what is the speed in rpm of the shafting after reducing the speed of motor by using pulleys? our motor is only 1740 rpm is ok or too slow or too fast?
Jeff in the video you say the only bad design is that the screen should be on the side wall. You suggest putting the screen on the side rather than the bottom. Will the crushed particles still exit the crusher if the screen is on the side? Doesn't it need to be on the bottom as you already have it? Surely the crushed rock will fall to the bottom not the side?

nice idea and excellent explanation.Isuggest weld weld pieces of ir
thanks Bro for your sharing knowledge 👍👍👍
Always welcome
Great video ! thanks Jeff ,You would make a great teacher.
donald growdon Thanks and I would love to do that.
Jeff and Slim
is it a 2 inch hole right through with a screen slid in? How do you make this part of it?
Dave T yes it is.
Jeff and Slim
What is the diameter and width of the machine? Does a 2.5 hp 2-stroke gasoline engine hold up this service?
hi mr. jeff. i found your crusher interesting.i would like to bulid something like this but of different use. I am looking for a way to pulverize a coconut shell. I assume it would work but I am not sure. Do you think using also chain can pulverize the coconut shell? what are your suggestions about it?

Hello sir,I like this video,it is a good machine and I would like to build one,but how much the capacity sir?thanks a lot.
It should be able to process a cubic yard of material in about 3 hours. Jeff
Thanks a lot for your information sir.I'm really appreciate it.
What is the recommended motor speed?
but Jeff if the screen mesh is on the side how do we get the heavies out
+Vladimir Nachev trust me they will get beat to a fine mesh size and the Gold if bigger then the screen will stay in the drum so it is important to clean it out after each run.
Jeff and Slim
+Ask Jeff Williams Oh thanks Jeff and especially you Slim :D I'll start making my own one
oh yeah , i need info on ones you build Thanks again Jeff for sharing your knowledge !!!
so if the mesh was on the side wouldn't material get trapped in the drum and be difficult to collect?

hey nice machine, how did you balance the shaft? Also what size gas motor would it take to run? My gen is to small for that but would love to have it on my claim. Thanks for the vids have learned some great stuff and will pass it on to my Grand kids.
Hi Rob we welded small counter weighs on until balanced and probably a 10 hp. Jeff
That's awesome! Great idea!!
G'day Jeff,
I enjoy your style!
Mate is there a preferred gap/chains to casing, both up down an sideways? or is it, give it some clearance and she'l work fine??
Chris Phillips Thanks Chris, always like hearing that. We set them at about 1/4 inch.
Jeff and Slim
hi love your vids. What is that flat ball bearing mount called? and what rpm do you use.? plees answer.
you always amaze me Jeff! keep them coming
Jaye Smith you betcha,

They are very easy to construct and the only real challenge is to calculate proper tip speed.

can you give me some of the major advantages and disadvantages of using chains instead of metal bar for hammer... thanks in advance
Jeff,
how does the screen work? To let the fines out is it just a slit?
Dave T Hi Dave yes we just cutout a large slot at the bottom and then welded two small strips to hold the punch plate in place.

Jeff are you getting a bigger budget for your videos? They keep getting more entertaining(intro) and educational. My cousin and I were talking about buying or building one our self, thanks Chris
Gordon Freeman is that you??? Love your work mate big love from AUS! YEEHAWW
Great videos! Love watching and learning, keep it up!
when running I did not see much dust. Is this really so. I have almost an identical machine with paddles and the dust is incredible.
That's right, no dust. Jeff
i wonder if you can set the thang on it side that way the screen will be on it side mmm just thinkin ...i want to make one :)
What size of motor do you use. what is the rpm.
+Philipp Reed 2 horse power with a 1700 rpm tip speed.

+Ask Jeff Williams okay thanks
Quartz with gold in it takes many appearances. I found a rich lode with no visible gold that assays up to 3 oz./ton with 5/8 oz./ton being the low end. Generally, quartz with gold is dirty not snow white; brown, black, rose, grey are inviting colors on the rock. Also, sugar quartz is good, crumbly quartz is good. Have it assayed or learn to assay.
Always like your videos my man, but this one really entertained me. By far the best at what you do. Thanks for the videos.
Say you had made a second to sell. How much would you ask for a contraption of that kind?
we no longer have one to sell....
looks fairly easy to build, I have about 3 buckets full of ore from old mine sites I am dying to see whats inside.
Do you ever prospect the bumblebee area?
Hey Jeff- had to do a double take, didn't recognize you. Another great vid, enjoyed it
Thanks
Thankx buddy i m going to make this type of machine
When you make?
@@footballfanclub1425 i already make it
But its sounds so loud and its makes everything in powder but i dont powder
hi Jeff,
just about to build one of these, so can you run it wet? And would this be better than a ball mill?
Dave T you can but it tends to clog unless you run a water flush on it while running. we run it dry not as much of a mess. Ball mills are designed to handle more material then an impact or flail mill.

Interesting to know what tonnage can be crushed per day and how long will the chains last
Going to build one for crushing glass. I have picked up hundred of pounds of glass on the beach in front of my house in the Philippines.
