    That looks really nice, my Lincolns original carpet has like 3 cigarette burn marks, the old lady that owned it since new smoked, and had a small dog. Mine is also grey however the carpet is HUGE and has molded foam backing..I'm not sure if I can find a bin large enough to fit mine into.
    Yours came out looking so nice, the black would definitely hide those small burns better than Ford Graphite Grey...Perhaps a large kiddie pool or something might work..I gotta try something, my new carpet is well over $400 bucks for Essex pile and mass backing.

      @@BlackTownie999 glad you like the final result. This carpet also had molded foam on the backing, but I just dyed it all 🤷‍♂️
      I have read about people using the kiddie pool, but I was paranoid something would go wrong and leak. I initially planned this as a winter project and didn’t want like 30+ gallons of black dye potentially leaking onto my basement floor! If you had a good spot outdoors it would probably work. Ive also seen some people try rolling or brushing the dye on with varying levels of success. Good luck on your project and let me know if you have any other questions!

      go somewhere like tractor supply or something similar and get a feed bin or one of those aluminum tubs. they make them in al kind of sizes. im planning on doing the same thing with the interior of my 90s mini truck im building.

      @@tommybomber even better if it's metal so you can apply heat to it to heat the dye up without worrying about melting the plastic, the dye works much better with heat.
      The weather turned before I was able to do my dyeing project so I don't have any updates...Other than I did clean the carpet extremely well, and it looks a million times better other than those three lil burn marks, which did come up slightly during cleaning but not enough to make them go away getting the stains out will make the dye job look so much better.

    Do you think all 14 bottles are necessary or would about half of that still get the job done?

    • @JDMke
      @JDMke  23 дні тому

      I just followed the “recipe” that I found and wanted to make sure the carpet was a deep, dark black. I think to actually figure out the amount of dye you would need to weigh the carpet. The dying instructions on the bottle use fabric weight to calculate the amount you would need. Also it’s worth mentioning that the liquid dye is stronger than the powder, so you would likely need less of the liquid dye.

      @ oh I thought for every 3 gallons you use 1/2 a bottle. I recently used about 30 gallons so I should use 5 bottles but I put 7 to make sure. What is the ratio that you followed?

      If you check out the link in the description of the video (to the Supraforums post) it explains the thought process for the quantity of dye. I knew that this process worked based on the others that were successful, so I decided to follow suit and I was super happy with it. Can’t wait to actually see it installed in the car!

    What’s with the salt?
    I use rit for dying plastics all the time. Use just regular water to near boiling 5 mins it’s done. Is the salt used cause the type of fabric?

    • @JDMke
      @JDMke  2 місяці тому +1

      Adding salt is recommended in the instruction from RIT and the guide I followed on Supra Forums, so I just used it. Here is what I found on reddit for why it’s used:
      “Table salt is added because it makes the dye bath electro-negative and makes the fibers more electrochemically responsive to the dye molecules. Its not necessary but it can make the resulting dye job more bright and/or more permanent.”
      I just followed the process that others used, but Im glad you asked because now we both know!

    You can see the camera has issues when zooming in at the end of the video. The black suddenly looks greyish, and the closer you get the brighter it looks. But filming from up top, above your head, it really looks deep black. Nice job!
