  • www.studiobeeproductions.com With the weather being so cold here in Southeast Louisiana, there has been no opportunity for me to go and wrangle bees, bummer. So, once again, this video finds us inside the St. Joseph Wood Works Shop, and this time I am building telescoping covers for our bee boxes, 113 of them.
    Unlike the video from last week where all the tools I used were ones that most wood workers have in their shop, this time, I'm showing and using some of the specialty tools that we use building our beautiful caskets. I am also showing and explaining a few more fixtures I built and used to construct the lids.
    Now 113 lids is a bunch of lids, but I figure between splits, cut outs, and swarms, I'll need at least 75 of them, and I'd rather have to many than not enough. So, sit back, grab you cup of joe or tea, actually you may need two of them because this video is the longest one I have ever made, and watch yet another shop adventure as I build telescoping covers. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

      Thank you for the blessing and spending 25 minutes watching this one. Now, I have to ask another favor, the video I'm posting this Friday is even longer, 35 minutes, and it's about working one of our bee yards getting ready for splits. I would really appreciate you watching and letting me know what you think of it. I am not going to keep making these long videos, it's explaining the content that makes them so long. Cut out videos are about to start and they should only bee around 10 minutes. The screened bottom board video is coming up soon. God's peace.

    Smart setting! Liked this a lot. I'm waxdipping (just started this year) and hope I am doing the right thing. Since I live further north from you, in Sweden, I like to bring warmth by using black coloured rooflids. I coloure it by "Shou Sugi Ban ", burn and bruch. Then down into the waxdipper.
    I really liked your setting!

    Great video of your woodshop. Quite the array of tools you have to use. Your jigs for the top and frame is a great idea and the one for the drill press. I take it that the "moulder" is a machine that does the work of a planer and jointer at the same time. That's way cool. It's nice to see such a well laid out shop, very professional. I've been binge watching for a week now and just love your videos. Thanks for all you do, with the bees and with the shop. Blessings.

    Well I must say it’s quite a bit more elaborate than my setup but essentially it’s the same process. As you know I am on a much lower volume than that but for me it’s as much fun building as outing them to use. Even hand bending the metal is getting streamlined as I develop a process. Thanks for making this. I’ll keep on watching as long as you’re making more.

    It's very uplifting seeing you do all this work for your bees.
    Read a news article today that really had me down. Two boys destroyed an Iowa honey farm toppling 50 hives over into the snow killing some 500k bees. These two boys also broke into the utility shed and destroyed a bunch of the equipment.

      Though I may give the impression that they are my bees, they are not. I keep bees for a group of Benedictine monks, and I volunteer in their wood shop building caskets. The work I do is for the benefit of the monks as one day I will be one myself. You could sort of say I'm planning my future. I read about story you related, it is just VERY sad. Fortunately for the owners of the bees, they have been made full by the generosity of people donating to them. Unfortunately, the world lost 500,000 bees which are not so easily made. Thanks for watching, and I hope you continue to watch my bee wrangling adventures and comment on them. God's peace.

    • @JeffHorchoff

      Fixtures and jigs are some of the hardest things to come with to help projects go faster and produce the same product repeatedly. The challenge in making them is all part of the fun of being a wood worker. I 'd love to make more wood projects, but my channel is primarily a bee channel, still, I'll throw in a few shop videos because I really love doing projects. God's peace Alex.

    My favorite weekends are the ones in which I build bee keeping equipment. My shop is the open air in front of my shed. It takes me about 20 minutes to lay out the tools. Cutting and assembly happens on Saturdays, priming and painting on Sundays.

    I know coveting is a sin, but I am envious of the CNC to which you have access. That is so much easier than using a tablesaw and manhandling sheets of plywood. Keep the videos coming.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 років тому

      I checked with the monks, and they told me that it's OK to covet the CNC. That machine is REALLY sweet. We cut all our parts for the caskets with it, and because of the effectiveness of the vacuum table, we have made vacuum tables as fixtures for almost each part we build now. The whole shop is really cool. Any drooling when you saw the vacuum lift for the plywood? Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    Awesome shop Mr Ed, also liked the revolving lid assembly jig. Do you ever do rebate joints on the lid and box joins, I do and then glue with poly urethane glue, and ceramic coated 8G 2" square drive screws. Then I oil base under coat and oil base top coat. We found structural steel silver paint rolls on easy and is durable as a top coat. I haven't got into spray yet. Our lids are a bit different here in Australia same style but not telicoping we use steel cam lock straps to tie all the assembly together so teliscoping gets in the way when load on a truck best if all fit flat side to side. Mainly using weathertex HD MDF bottom boards but I use some sheet metal bottom boards no worries. Some cold frosts over winter but work ok, best to use wood and I have one Poly Styrene which does really well. I see no sense in plastic except for nucs of maybe high quality. If I was a bee I would protest plastic boxes LOL

    • @livingadamman7994
      @livingadamman7994 2 роки тому

      Another idea for insulation is to put a sheet of foam or that silver bubble roll in between the top and the tin, best to use HD poly foam sheet 3/4" if want to stack hives on top of one another to insure strength and flatness. This stops condensation on inside of lids and the troubles that it can then cause

    Another great video. Wish I knew someone with that kind of equipment lying around! :)
    Question: why did you pain the sides before the roof board was mounted? The sides of plywood are the most absorbing, and by painting them too you'd make it less vulnerable to rain driven up under the metal cover by the wind. Just thinking out load...

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 років тому

      It may have been better to paint the covers with the plywood on them, but since the plywood is an exterior grade, and the edges are covered, it should bee OK. Morning Jeff. My curious little brain has a few questions, if you wouldn’t mind answering. What type of casket does the shop put out? Decorative or Unitarian? Are you involved in making the caskets? Does the church sell or just provide the caskets to the indigent? Do the caskets meet the requirements Louisiana has for burial? What happens if there is no burial vault for the recipient? The closer I get to actual dying age the more I wonder about the various practices folks follow. My husband has instructions to cremate me and spread my ashes on the family ranch in Montana. He’ll probably end up scattering me in the corral amongst all the cow poop, lol. I won’t care I spent a good portion of my life helping out in those corrals. Just don’t spread me in the chicken coop, I hate being in chicken poop/coop. Well time to feed the zoo and get some tea, I’ve got a gallon of my favorite mesquite honey to add to it and my toast to start my day off. GB Kate

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 років тому +6

      Not that I mind answering all your questions about the caskets we produce, but to save me a bunch of typing, would you go to the abbey's web page, www.saintjosephabbey.com and see for yourself. I am involved in building the caskets as well as the other 19 volunteers that give their time and talents for the benefit of the monks. The abbey sells caskets as well as provide, in certain cases, for those in need with out the means of paying for them. In Louisiana, as well as many other states, there are no requirements that a casket needs to meet in order to be sold. As a matter of fact, in Louisiana, you can be buried in your bed spread if you so desire. Not everyone is buried in a vault, at the abbey, as well as in many, many other cemeteries , bodies are buried directly in the ground. And one last thing, in case you are concerned that your ashes may be spread with the chickens, we do sell solid cypress urns that are really nice. I hope that answers your questions, now go to the web site and look at our caskets. Have a great week. God's peace.

    Oh... and the metal covers. Are they just tin or are they galvanized? Kate

      It's 26 gauge Galva-lum, really heavy duty stuff. God's peace Kate.

    Mr. Ed, what make and model of the stapler are you using these days for making telescoping tops? Im having a hard time finding a stapler that will reliably penetrate either aluminum or galvanized steel trim coil. Also, what is the contact info for the company you have making the metal lid for you, we would be interested in buying them pre-formed from them as well.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому

      I'm using a Porter-Cable 1/4 inch stapler. It goes through 26 gauge easily, jut make sure you wear eye protection. My recommendation, find a local sheet metal shop and work it out with them, that's what I did. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

      @@JeffHorchoff I've got a Hitachi 1/4" crown stapler, but that one tends to shoot right through the metal. We've contacted a few companies but they want $20 per top. I would like a 1/2" or 3/8" crown stapler but the only one I can find is a 1/2" construction stapler but its just to heavy.

      @@JeffHorchoff I ended up going with a Senco SLS25XP-M with a 3/8" crown. 3/8" to 1 1/2" leg, 18g, adjustable depth control and anti-mar tip. Could not be happier. Shoots great.

    So who won the contest of who catches the most swarms between you and the dirtrooster. Been hearing about it all summer (2017) but have not heard the results ?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 років тому

      There was no contest, the Rooster did not even show up. Mr. Ed had over 30 swarms, the 628 Dirt Rooster may have had 10. The guy is still crying over the beating I gave him. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    Impressive industrial-scale production of hive parts. This is not a little hobby.
    BTW, I've been reading about how cold it's been in Louisiana lately (January 2018). I hope that your bees are doing okay.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  6 років тому +1

      Just a wood worker in the shop cutting a few parts out to build some covers for the bee boxes, life is good. It has been VERY cold for us. I did hive rotations on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, that's what the next video is about, and lost 21 out of 70 hives, at least 4 of them directly related to the cold weather. Still, nothing that splits, cut outs, and swarms won't compensate for. I can hardly wait for the Spring. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    Jeff could you do me a favor? Sometime in the wee morning hours we lost my Father-in-law, John A. Rutherford 87. He was a wonderful husband, father and cherished Grandfather to my daughter. He tended to the needs of the homeless for the last 25 years after his retirement . His beloved bride, Pat, has been waiting for him to join her for these last 11 years. Please would you and your prayer group, if you have one, offer a prayer for him and his final return to our lord. Thank you Kate

    Since this is one of my favorite bee related channels, this is great news for fighting the mites impacting the bees so hard: www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-19137-5

Also, thank you for sending the link, but I must tell you, I do not put chemicals in our bee hives. My philosophy on bee keeping takes the natural route, and so treatments are not in my regiment, but thank you again for yur help. God's peace.

      Natural is definitely good. :) I am happy they found that the various lithium based products (salts and citrates) work so well. That and in the small doses it killed the mites with no bad effects on the bees is great news for the future of the planet...assuming humans dont do something else crazy. In any case keep up the great videos, love watching them. :)
