Run out of fuel - it's likely that high pressure fuel pump is shagged. Common problem on N47's. Could even be seized. Bits of it will have done the injectors as well. But a used pump, four injectors, fuel rail, in tank pump etc is cheap enough plus a new filter. The tank needs draining and fully cleaning from within the pump aperture and the fuel lines blowing through. Quickest way to check is to pull the in tank pump out and look for glitter in the diesel - hang a magnet in there for 10 minutes as well.
I second that. I was going to suggest that. Maybe a full cleaning of the fuel system first before buying parts? Check the set and actual fuel rail pressure and injection via a OBD scanner. I use Bimmerlink.

But in all seriousness 6 is really the sweet spot, 8+ is a headache and past the point of diminishing returns. Not just in terms of maintenance but also in terms of usability, fuel economy and cost of keeping it on the road.
However I'm a pragmatic person so all of those matter to me, while someone who isn't won't really care as long as they have an absolute beast under the bonnet.
So if you must have the best of the best and you don't care how much it costs you, M5 V10 is the way to go.

Loving the content
First thing to do is try to turn the engine over by hand to check if it ceased or not. Don't waste time or efford looking for fuel or electrical problems. See if the engine turns over.
Check /replace the main earthing strap from the chassis to the engine also. They turn to dust after about 10 years with the salt and water from the roads. That could also be the reason for poor charging or the inability to jump start
you have great videos, the tailgate is def an extra option , i believe it was a 300 dollar option on the 330i confiscator iirc
Hope it’s not too serious George. I own an 530d F11 and although both my daughter and partner run N47’s with fuel economy to long for, I love my 6 pot and the relentless shove it gives. BMW’s worst fault is their ridiculous long service intervals that rely on long life oil. Stuff that, I service my car with non long life Castrol edge every 6k and it purrs like a kitten that turns into an angry tiger when booted in sport mode.😊
These are great cars, i have the 320d in this sport spec, with a couple of extras.
One thing that transforms these cars is the zf8 auto box tho, it actually makes even the n47 seem refined. id never go back to manual now.

Love my F10 520D . Change oil every 5000 had it 5 years and it’s done 95000 miles. I think if you look after the n47 properly and don’t abuse it it’s a pretty good motor. Look forward to you stripping this one down to diagnose the problems.
About the knocking - maybe detonation because the previous owner filled it up with petrol instead of diesel? Petrol has very low cetane.

Yours has the optional red highlight stitching on the seats - nice and a rare option
If you have red trim on the key that's also optional not sure why someone would pay for that but original owner of my old car did
Auto lifting tailgate is optional
All trims bar M Sport have same suspension

That's a good question, I've got a 2014 f10 520d with the b47 engine in it, be Intresting to know what's involved, I'm guessing mechanically it will drop straight in there, but vo in modules would probably be needed, maybe dme if difference, find out what modules you need, get them with engine you buy and then ista p replace modules, Now that'd would be great Content George 😉

Great cars I have 2 although they are F30’s & 328D here in the states. Basically a n47 in a 320 body here. Anyway bought both new only need a few injectors at 125k on both cars. Love them rip off the line and drive smooth no power at high speeds really tho falls flat

Sounds like wrong fuel or HP pump as mentioned elsewhere.
Change fuel filter and battery if its goosed.

So on the video you said it has a knocking noise and the previous owner let the fuel tank go dry. Sure on all diesels you have to drain the system properly then add diesel to the tank. Probably without confirming caused issues with the fuel rail maybe? And the injectors not getting little to no diesel? I would get the fuel filter replaced as well. Are you going to buy a B47 diesel they are fun to work on 😅 having just changed the turbo on it lol

I've just been to view a f30 330d m sport today but has high mileage 190,000 and not much service history but was in really good condition and drove really well, don't know weather to buy it or not, just can't decide.

I was hoping to hear the noise it was making. Was it a lower end knock or an upper end knock? The high pressure fuel pump could have gone out, and that is driven by the camshaft.
It's actually driven by the chain from the crankshhaft. Then another chain goes from the pump sprocket up to one camshaft.
if its clicking when u jump start it the starter could be fucked,but could still be a goosed engine.
George, This will be an intresting project( i have a November 2020 220d m sport 10,000 miles last of the series 2 coupe cars made) Could it have been missed fueled?Petrol fuel in a diesel will make it knock,Just a thought as to why it was knocking it would depend on how much petrol in with the diesel remaining in the tank when it was filled back up.Then if started it would fire too early and cause pre ignition(pinking)Just a guess as to the knocking noise or could the engine knock be a rod knock/spun big end bearing?(worst case)Good luck with the next video cannot wait for this comming up.
It had a quarter tank of fuel when I picked it up, I brimmed it to the top and bled the fuel system to rule out any air in the system

Red trim line in that period meant sport trim rather than M-Sport which was blue piping interior. And those auto-tailgates are another liability. I have a mate that got one of these brand new at the time 2013, and was listing all the nice extras he had, including this tailgate system. I listened to the long list of basically useless stuff on it, and said that stuff like the tailgate is just another thing to break and become a problem when you don't need it. He'd had the car 2 months and the tailgate mech broke and it was back to BM for 2 months while they got parts and fixed it.... Thing about the tailgate issue is if that happens you cannot secure your car wherever this happens to you. Idiotic design really. He also had the EGR valve system replaced on that car under recall, but his was also showing the signs that meant it was a fire risk. Meanwhile i'm still driving my 2009 320d M-Sports that is all original except for new coil springs, shocks and new alternator timing belt.... what a car for 8000 notes bought over 10 years ago and i've done 145k miles in it since.
Hopefully you can get it sorted for minimal expense George. I am not a fan of BMW 4 cylinder engines. Apart from the recent B48 they are pretty mediocre.
I haven't got experience with BMW 4 cylinder engines but I'd never buy one, both for the reasons of power and overall experience - the sound, the smoothness, the feel, etc.
However BMW 6 cylinders are my Achilles heel, I would spend my last dime on one if the situation called for it.😅
In my head BMW always stood for power and prestige so if it's not a 6 pot I don't consider it a BMW.
Silly I know but that's how I feel, 4 pots are simply way too average to stand out. Hell, even Volvo's 5 pots sound so much better. If I had to get a 4 pot diesel I'd get a Volkswagen. 🤷🏽♂️
We have a 4 cylinder Golf GTI Mk7 and it is a good engine for what it is. Smooth decent on fuel. It just isn't special and sounds crap. BMW have had a habit in the recent past of making them slow, thirsty and unreliable where as the 6 pots are always brilliant...
New Battery needs to be code to tell the car it's fully charged.

Nice looking car. Can't remember the web site but it's Russian, that you can put in vin and get spec's all extras. If the seller was genuine the the car would of been making the noise before if engine ran out of fuel, because can't see running out of fuel f'd the engine. Did oil light come on? Would guess and start with fuel if engine turns over. Fuel pump, and replace filter would be where I would start. Good luck.

potentially good buys because they are so good on fuel and offer good performance and the breakers yards are full of unwanted cars due to the evil unscientific ULEZ and simular schemes and due to more than their share of mechanical issues.

I've just spent 4 hours on the side of the A3 by Hindhead tunnel in my mates M140 which had a reoccurring drivetrain fault come up again. Misfiring, loss of power and then clouds of white smoke. Thought it was fixed after having the turbo rebuild and host of other things. My own 120d has broken down twice in past year and a half - I've spent £1200 on new chain/pump plus disks/pads, alloys refurb and now I get a judder when engaging the clutch. I've come to the conclusion that BMW's are just a pile of shit. It's cost us both thousands and I'm selling mine - his is going to cost him a bucket load to fix and we'll both lose thousands overall. Really regret buying mine. Still enjoy your videos though!

It seems like you picked the worst engine you could, in the hope you could get some good content out of it.
I have owned 6 BMW's in my last 7 cars, and every one has been nothing but reliable, and actually, quite brilliant. The only diesel I had was an E91 320D with the M47 engine which was bullet proof.
All other BMW's have had straight 6 petrol engines, absolutely reliable, economical for their power level, and just so smooth.
To make any profit to carry over to the next car in the series, I’m always going to have to take a risk.. No risk = no reward. I bought this car because there is potential to make a profit there. If I buy already sorted cars then there will be no profit and no content to be made.

Everything you mentioned comes as bog standard.
At least the 18d has a few less things to go wrong compared to the higher powered versions but yeah n47 is pretty dreadful overall

Out of all the pointless, useless features on modern cars I think an automatically opening & closing tailgate/boot is the most useless & pointless. There really is no hope left for anyone who finds it too bothersome to open & close their tailgate by hand.
I have it on my E70, and I find it rather useful. But what about soft close doors? I don't have it and I don't miss it.
