  • I wanted to give you an update on where we're at pre move. We've planned the trip over, booked temporary accommodations, scheduled our pets to be transported, and are applying for our kids to attend an international school. We still have to pack what we are definitely taking and get international drivers licenses.
    This is my personal channel where I talk about my life: How I started producing true crime content, what the process of moving to The Netherlands is, how I overcame struggles in my life stemming from childhood abuse, and I will also put up some music. when we moved to Berlin we literally took *one suitcase each*. We found out we really don't need much stuff: we sold, gave for free or temporary placed to my parents almost everything, waiting to see what kind of home we will have and what would be really useful in the new country.
    Our cat came 2 months later, after we had the keys of the new flat.
    At the time I had only one toddler, but the past year my 8yo daughter changed school in April (we moved recently in another area, but in the same city) and it was not a problem at all: many children changes school for a number of reason (parent's new job, and so on) so the teachers are well prepared to make everyone feel welcome. During the past year a lot of Ukrainian children came as well for obvious reasons, and they are speaking German pretty well, after only a few months.
    We planned to move to Germany almost one year prior, so we had to wait many time as well. (Meanwhile no one between our relatives, friends and colleagues believed we were going to do it for real...). We studied the new language in a class, 4 hours a week, 9 months long; we looked in internet for flats to rent, trying to understand where to live and where not (and, in retrospect, we were oh so wrong... we changed 8 apartments in 3 months u.u), and we read a lot of books and websites and forums and so on ...to try to imagine what was expecting us, and to be well prepared.
    My husband had been *never in his life* in Germany before, so it was quite a big leap for him, but he trusted me (actually I was in Germany only once, 12 years before, one week long. 😅 But I KNEW it was better for us!).
    We knew anyone in the city, beside some very recent local FB "friend" that helped us during the first very chaotic months.
    We made a "B plan" about how to return in Italy, just in case everything was really shitty in Berlin as someone inevitably told us... but after 3-4 months every piece of the puzzle fell in the right place and our only regret is, yesterday as today: "pity we didn't came here many many years before!"
    This is my best wish for you and your family 💝

    I love this channel. Thank you for taking us along with you on your journey. ❤️
    I’m excited to see my Oma’s motherland through your lens.
    I’ve never been there, but, it is on my bucket list. As a Canadian, in the province of Nova Scotia, I’m happy with where we live (-at this point in time, anyway).
    I can 100% understand why you’d pick The Netherlands over USA.
    I’ve loved your Monsters channel since the day I happened upon it (-I think I have watched every episode).
    I have always had a lot of respect for you, and, am emotionally invested in your happiness and success.
    -even more so, now that you have shared some of your personal story.
    All the best to you and your sweet fam. Looks as though you guys have covered all your bases, in terms of research, and, plotting out a smart plan. Hope it is as seamless a transition as possible, for you, your partner, and your kids.
    What an adventure!! What a cool family story to pass down through the generations. ❤

    Hey man! Another Dutchie here. I've been a huge fan and only just found out through this video you're moving to our country!
    I have family going the opposite way. My dad moved to the US about 12 years ago and my little brother followed him 2 years ago. It's interesting to hear your views of why you want to leave the US, compared to the reasons why half my family moved there.
    The Netherlands is a good country to come and live in, decent government, decent weather, beautiful scenery great food and.... LOTS of great music! I've once heard a saying that there are more music festivals here, then there are days in a year. Which for a small country like ours is pretty cool :)
    The Hague is very pretty, old and new combined and its right on the coast. Although the weather is not as nice as it is in Cali, you'll find that you get to appreciate the days with good weather even more, and i think you will enjoy plenty of great days on the beach.
    Immigrants are very welcomed here, and i think you'll be able to find (furnished)housing very easily, especially for short term.
    Like written below, learning our language will be a bitch. Most of us speak very good English and therefor learning our language is not a necessity. Especially in the Amsterdam/Rotterdam/The Hague area most facilities will offer any service in English, even food menu's in restaurants for example.
    I've subscribed here as well, and im excited for you to move here, and excited for me to follow the journey. I've seen it written below before; but if you need any help/info dont hesitate to contact.
    all the best!

    Good on you for including your pets! I hate that so many people abandon their animals, leaving them heartbroken.
    I'm curious if they drive on the left side in the Netherlands? That would be so disorienting to me.

    • @jileswithaj
      @jileswithaj  Рік тому +3

      No. Actually most of Europe drives on the right. I think since the UK drives on the left people assume all of Europe does but it's actually less common throughout the world (about 35%). There are only 8 countries that drive on the left in Europe and 3 of them are the UK, Ireland and the Isle of Man which are pretty much the British Isles. The rest are the tiny islands of Cypress (which includes the country of Akrotiri and Dhekelia), Malta, Guernsey, and Jersey. Which I'm assuming were all ruled by England at some point which is why they drive on the left. The reason is likely because knights used to generally be right handed, so they rode their horses past people on the left in order to have their sword carrying side closer to the person they're passing in case they turn out to be dangerous. If I want to drive to the UK, I will either have to a car on the ferry or the train to through the channel tunnel and when you get off either of those things you get directed to the left side of the road. Then you reverse it when you get back.

    Dear Jiles, another Dutchie here! Love the fact that you and your family are moving to the Netherlands. Just a quick tip: do look into Almere, a young city with young people, lots of job opportunities and about 140K inhabitants. It has a new International School, lots of nature (even beach on the lake), and it is very close to Amsterdam (20 minutes by car or train). It has a variety of schooling for children (regular, Montessori, free school etc.) and the infrastructure is great and very safe for children. Most of all, it is SOOOO much cheaper to live in Almere than in any of the larger cities: Amsterdam, the Hague or Rotterdam, and much less criminality. It is in the middle of the country which makes it a great exploration starting point. I have lived there for 30 years and it is a great city for growing children.

    • @jileswithaj
      @jileswithaj  Рік тому

      Well, due to the fact that I've spent my life living either in Southern California and the Seattle area, two of the most expensive places in the US, everywhere is the Netherlands is cheaper. Even if we moved to Amsterdam we will pay €1,000 a month less for housing. We are already in the process of getting our kids enrolled at an international school near the Hague though. If it doesn't work out, we'll keep Almere in mind! Thanks for the suggestion.

    This is so awesome, excited for you guys! I recently moved to Germany and my gf to Netherlands (Amsterdam area) so I spend time there regularly and we both really love it. Not depending on a car for every day things was a major factor and we couldn't be happier.
    One thing you might look into regarding the driver's license, in my case (Germany), I was able to change my driver license from the US by a german license for free. I just needed to do that within the first 6 months, maybe it's similar in the Netherlands.
    Regarding the language, and you probably know this already, the dutch speak english incredibly well. I would say learning dutch isn't a must, but it does go a long way and they will really appreciate it.
    Good luck with everything!

    QUESTION: This is not a criticism, just a suggestion to try and help you have a more pleasant experience. Why are you shipping your entire family and pets over altogether in December without first knowing where you are going to live? What about getting yourself established first before bringing your entire family over? It might be wiser to come alone PRIOR to that date for that period of time that you will need to apply for all of the necessary permits/paperwork and enrollment for the kids in school. Maybe even set up your Dutch bank account and your business at the same time. About obtaining 'affordable' furnished housing here, well, does that even exist? It seems it would be far more practical to come by yourself and look around in person first to see just what's available and where. I'm not sure how long international drivers licences are valid for, but when I came to Holland (in December 1989) I went to the local DMV shortly afterwards and turned my Virginia license in for a Dutch one. DO familiarize yourself with the Dutch rules for driving as they are different from ours. You don't absolutely need a car here because public transport is so good and there is always the bike. I dunno, it seems awfully cumbersome to try to maneuver your way around any country by yourself, let alone with an entire family/pets in tow. Success.🌹

    • @jileswithaj
      @jileswithaj  Рік тому +4

      First of all, we do know where we're going to live. We have a place lined up for a month which we can extend if need be. After that, we'll find a furnished rental near where our children will be going to school. There are many reasons that I am not going over separately. The biggest is because I don't need to. There's no reason for us to do that and it really would be more work that way. First, we don't want to pay for two separate places to live. I would need to pay for housing here as well as housing (or a hotel) over there at the same time, which isn't practical. We have an AirBNB set up for a month over there which will perfectly accommodate our family and our pets. Again, there's no reason to not bring our pets at the same time that we move. We won't be navigating a new place with them, they'll be at home in the AirBNB. Then when we find a rental, we'll simply bring them over. And the rest of us will simply grab our suitcases and travel to the new rental. I don't see the difficulty there. I'm actually quite confused why that seems so difficult. I guess I also have never found it cumbersome to move my family around an unknown place let alone just myself so I think we're clearly just two different people. If we all come over and don't bring our pets, we would need to find someone to care for them and then send them over later, which again seems like much more work than just bringing them with us and having them stay comfortably in the AirBNB while we look around. Then the rest of our belongings (which will be almost nothing) will take more than a month to arrive in the Netherlands, so we will be out of the AirBNB by then. It actually helps to send our belongings when we fly over so they will be there shortly after we move into a more permanent rental. The paperwork for the kids will all be done before we go over there and there's no reason I need to set up a bank account ahead of time. Our American bank account will still be open and all of our cards will work just fine over there. I never said anything about "affordable" furnishings, just that we aren't taking any of ours. We will buy new furniture after we buy a house. None of the furniture we currently own is nice and some of it is downright not worth shipping to anything country. It just seems like you're suggesting adding an unnecessary step. You need to understand that we are moving and we will not return to the US. We do not feel safe here and getting out of the US is our priority, so this isn't a "let's go over and see if we like it" move. We also live solely on my income which means, despite me being able to work extra before we move and get myself some time off, I will still have a lot of things to do to keep my business going which means I need to bring a certain amount of equipment with me when I fly over. Having extra hands to help with that will be very beneficial. My family works together as a team and we will be very happy to get set up in the Netherlands together. It also might help to know that we don't have little kids. They're old enough where they don't need to be watched like hawks. They're fairly independent.
      And I would never go to another country and assume their driving laws are the same as the US. It's weird that you're suggestion I would.

    • @LindaCasey
      @LindaCasey Рік тому +1

      @@jileswithaj Thanks for 'splainin' .. like I said, it wasn't a criticism at all. That airBNB set up does sound ideal actually. I didn't really understand all of the rules myself and needed lots of assistance. You're obviously much more in tune than I was. I know the school in The Hague, it's a well known international school.
      Some parents choose our type of school because it is a Dutch school (with all the regular subjects) that is made international, by using CLIL (content and language integrated learning). So classes are mostly in English, but in the upper forms the classes switch to Dutch. Exams in our school are also in Dutch. Often students go to the ISK (internationale schakel klas) first and then come to us.
      The international school has fewer subjects and focuses more on the core subjects and the language.

It would be nice if there was more oversight with homeschooling in the US, but the only reason we were going to do it for one year was to make our transition to a new country easier. We did it for most of a school year during COVID as well. Otherwise, I think professionally trained teachers will probably do a better job.

Somewhere Sinister will also be done a bit in advance, but I don't actually do most of the work on that channel. I also have increased the amount of passive income I've been generating and will be able to purchase private unemployment insurance in the Netherlands, so we will be pretty well covered in the event I become incapacitated in some manner.

      Really? We’re using a relocation specialist that’s over there and they said it was no problem. I also see furnished rentals in the area we’re moving to online all the time.
      I mean, we’re flexible. If we find a great place and it’s not furnished, we’re still fine with it.

      @@jileswithaj Perfect. The relocation specialist will likely be able to find you a furnished place. My husband has been here with me in Ireland for about a decade now so things may have changed since then, especially in the areas you are searching. He said that when he was renting there, he always had to buy his own furniture for places and move it with him. Hopefully you won't have to deal with that hassle.

      I can confirm this, it is usually not the case that a rental property is rented furnished in The Netherlands (I live in a rented house with my wife and kid, all furnishing is our own). However, often these relocation specialists that really specialize in customers from the US or Canada manage to find people that do rent out furnished properties. This is rare though.

      @@PiliipG My husband said the same thing. I'm sure it's possible to find furnished places, but he said it's the exception and not the rule. It's just wise to be aware in case purchase and subsequent moving of furniture is something that is necessary.

      @@kevinfromaccounting Yeah true, it's just not that common here to rent furnished properties, but it does happen. I actually have an American friend living close where to I live, who also managed to find a furnished property using a rental agency of sorts, that also focused on customers from mostly the US. Seems like they know what their clientelle prefer, and find their properties accordingly.

    Edit; that's kind of awesome that you can enter and get settled sans visa and have those 90 days to apply for residency! I wonder, does your wife work now? I wonder if she helps w the channels and could just continue doing that work over there? I only ask because I've heard stories of ppl who give up careers due to a big move and then have a hard time adjusting and finding meaning being stay at home parents.
    On another note, good on you Jiles sir! Always ship pets only as a last resort and always in a pressurized climate controlled part of the plane. My grandma bred both Clydesdale horses and Xoloitzuintle dogs for many years and she has a couple horror stories about people trying to ship animals.
    On another another note, that's a mighty long drive! SoCal to WA state! 😮‍💨

    • @jileswithaj
      @jileswithaj  Рік тому +3

      No, my wife is not really interested in much true crime. She will watch a documentary about a really interesting crime story, but she doesn't like the really gruesome stuff. She doesn't listen to This is Monsters and I'm not allowed to talk about most of the stories with her. She does listen to Somewhere Sinister usually. She used to be a baker, but has been a stay at home mom for years now. When I transitioned from construction to doing this, I was working 90 hours a week and so she stayed home and make sure the household was operating. I've been able to slow down for the last year or so, but I'm picking up my work load now to get a few months worth of TIM and SS videos done in advance. A lot of people don't know this but you can upload videos to UA-cam and then schedule them to go live at a later date and time. So I'll do that. During our move, the TIM channel will just run itself beside some occasional social media updates. I just narrate SS and send it over to a friend and he does the video, so I'll pre-record a bunch of those and they'll be in his hands. My wife is going to be homeschooling the kids before our move, then she will continue to take care of that part of the family while we're there. She's an artist, so she will probably start making things to sell online eventually.
      The three pet relocation companies I talked to only fly pets with airlines that have pet friendly policies. Our pets have to fly on Lufthansa because they are the only airline that will fly French Bulldogs. Apparently their short snout can cause problems during the flight and most airlines just won't accept them. I guess Lufthansa is the most pet friendly airline though. They have their own special pet lounge in the Berlin Airport, which our pets will have a layover at.
      I drive between SoCal and WA all the time. Since I was a teen playing in bands, we played shows all up and down the west coast. My sister lived in San Diego for about 8 years when I was in my 20s, so I would drive down and visit. My best friend moved down to go to art school and never came back so I would come down and visit. Then when we moved I drove from WA down to SoCal twice to move stuff. I can do it in about a day. I've done it in 16 hours straight through in my 20s, but usually I go half way, stop at a hotel and then do the other half now and go a little slower so each half is about 10 hours. With podcasts now days, it makes the time fly.

      I finally got a multiple quotes for shipping our belongings and it will take 9-12 weeks for our stuff to make it over there. That’s from Southern California to The Hague.
      That works well for us because we are having our stuff picked up, then won’t actually fly over for another couple weeks, then we have an AirBNB until we find a long term rental. So, we should be settled into our rental by the time our stuff arrives. We are only taking stuff we can’t get over there so it won’t be anything we need right away.

    Not to put this juju out into the universe - but what happens with your VISA if by some unlucky circumstance your Content Company takes a dive? The swings of social media or whatever and you need to close up shop? I imagine they won't just kick you out, but generally curious given the type of visa you will be on. Or are you hoping to be a citizen before that would, hypothetically, happen?

    • @jileswithaj

      If I am no longer able to have my own business, I won’t be able to renew my visa when it needs to be renewed. They won’t kick me out right away, but I wouldn’t be able to get a job in the Netherlands so we would likely need to leave the country before my visa expired anyway.
      That being said, I don’t have all of my eggs in one basket. I have been diversifying my company so all of my income doesn’t just come from one location. Right now, one of those eggs is much larger than the others (This is Monsters) but that has been gradually evening out. I am working on all different types of media: UA-cam, podcast, music, published books, narrations, creative development. My business is building to involve much more than just what you see here.
