- While the kids were still out of school, we took a trip to NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam.
This is my personal channel where I talk about my life: How I started producing true crime content, what the process of moving to The Netherlands is, how I overcame struggles in my life stemming from childhood abuse, and I will also put up some music. If you want to learn more about me, this is the place. If you're interested in my other channels you can check them out here:

For those who don't know, Taal School is Dutch for Language School.
You will wonder how fast your children will learn our language 😊
The pronunciation threw me the first time, especially as the remainder of what he spoke was in English.
I heard 'tall school' and didn;t question it because in education they use all kinds of weird acronyms and buzz words
@@Blackadder75 I did question it as I am pretty familiar with Dutch education, being both Dutch and a third generation teacher's brat on both sides (and with enough self knowledge not to become one myself).
took me 6 months around the age of 11/12 voor de basis, de rest ging meer makkelijk due to shows films and series here use dutch subs so as to not ruine the voices but also helped get used to many words being similar to English making the learning process alot more interesting
and only around the age of 15 or 16 did i get my a,b,c diploma due to the u.lk doesn't fund swimming lessons to save your life, which i find a fat shame
I like how you pronounced Amsterdam the right way.
Hi Jiles, I know this might seem like a weird comment, but I sort of count you as a personal friend since you made this channel. I’ve always enjoyed your work and narration so much, but i was so happy to finally get to see what you look like and to get to peek into your personal life here on this channel. I know it’s not safe to show your wife and children, but I would like to just write a word of thanks to them for sharing you with us. I know this takes up so much of your time that belongs to them, and we really do appreciate their sacrifice. I’m glad you’re doing well, my friend. Thanks for sharing these with us ❤
That’s not weird. We’re besties!
Wow, I'm in awe about the science and education system over there! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
it's a museum, it's not really part of the normal education (although obviously it;s always a good thing when kids get to visit a museum and all schools try to promote it or organize a school trip themselves once a year) But interaction aspect in museums is pretty common all over europe, and afaik in north america too
Wow, I am so happy that you are happy in The Netherlands! If you need any help whatsoever, we are here! Greetz from Appingedam, The Netherlands, me and my daughter, Sarah and Emily! ❤
That was great Jiles! Thanks for the info, and it does very much seem that you and your wife are doing all the good things to raise good citizens of the world. ✌️
Our daughter went to an international school at first but we realised it makes integrating into Dutch society more difficult. She spent 6 months at a Taal school before moving on to a Dutch school. It was the best choice we ever made!
I agree with you Jiles, providing your child with love and support so they can be happy in their lives now and in the future is so important. Thanks for sharing your story and experience. Good luck with all the school arrangements
A joy to hear all the good things your experiencing in Holland...Nederland. The sharp contrast compared to the US must be quite a blessing..I look forward to being back there , i was in Achthoven this year...very good friends there..always take a trip to Utrecht when i visit.... Utrecht has very good music venues .....some really heavy gabber partys early 90s. ..I took my mother to Chris Rea in Utracht in 96 or 97 i think....Kado voor Mama
As this was posted, listening to This Is Monsters (as I do a lot at work) and wondering how the new area was.
Great update!
I was born and grew up in Eindhoven. Eindhoven is the tech - center of the Netherlands. I recommend visiting at least once. We went to so many conventions (and also the Nemo museum) at school. And my school wasn't a very wealthy one.
I am not very scientifically inclined myself unfortunately, but it is definitely very present in our culture and kids do get motivated to get into science.
Yes, nudity is normal here. Sex education is also important here. Dutch culture is very much about being down to earth and acknowledging reality. Teens will go and have sex at some point, that is just human reality. So better prepare them for it instead of putting fear and shame into them.
When I was 12 my parents moved us to Germany. They choose to stay close to the border because I would've been to old to start secondary school in Germany (apparently they start about 1-2 years earlier), so they put me throught school in The Netherlands. And even thought there was nothing really wrong about the education here, it did isolate me quite a lot from our local community where we lived. I as a shy kid never really got the change (to feel the need) to speak and practise German. I did have really good grades for German clases, but forgot almost everything I've learned as soon as I graduated. Because of this Germany never felt like home (it does feel familiar though haha) and I immigrated back to The Netherlands when I moved out. I'm sharing this little piece of anecdotal information with you, because if your olderst is also shy and goes to a school where there is an English speaking bubble, he could end up feeling isolated like me. Personality ofcourse plays a big role on how a kid will integrate I think. My younger and more outgoing sister by the way, still knows how to speak a bit of German haha.
Good children come from good parents. Your praise and support & HUGE Love of your children makes all the difference in the world.
Love~Honor~Protect~Teach~Praise~Treasure The Children for ~~THEY ARE Our Future~~
I'm absolutely loving this, Jiles! Thank you so much for sharing your family's experience! ❤❤❤❤❤
This is exciting! Thank you for the update, sounds like the kids will have no problem.
I’m so happy that you get comfortable with everything love the T-shirt❤ everything looks beautiful❤
A nice introduction to life in the Netherlands. The bicycle is the safest and best mode of transport in small towns. If I remember correctly there were a slew of autos hitting either pedestrians or cyclists in the 60's. Laws were enacted and automobiles were not allowed in parts of town.
No reliance on gasoline to go places and a healthy lifestyle walking and biking to nearby shops.
American towns are car dependent. Short sighted vision of the future.
I like having options. I have so many options I have zero desire to get a drivers license :P
@@bramvanduijn8086 I ride a ebike, I'm older. I don't see the need for a car and another insurance payment. We have one car. My wife drives it. I'm a bit of a loner, so no need for instant transport, I can take a train or Uber/Lyft and get where I need to go.
Hello Jiles 👋🏼
I'm excited about this update.
Seems things are going as planned.
Like the new photo 😂 it's very you imo
Love hearing how everyone is settling in! Keep these videos coming! 😊
The Science Center there reminds me of the Ontario Science Center in Toronto. It opened in Sept. 1969 [ I was 4yrs old] Went 3 times while in grade school. It was great place for kids of all ages. You have to walk a bridge to get to it, just like there, does not look like a boat but many different things, awesome looking though.
i bet the most great thing you can enjoy is the fact when they are a certain age they can go to school by themselves so you dont have to worry ect as i have seen in the u.s
You might also look at the International School Hilversum, especially if you're going to be staying in Utrecht. It's very close to the train station, so an easy commute for your kids on their own.
Leuke video, Jiles 😉
There are a lot of fun museums to go to in the Netherlands that can be quite interactive, for example beeld en geluid a museum dedicated to Dutch Media. When I was younger my parents brought me to all sorts of museums trough a pass called museumjaarkaart, basically this card gets you into a lot of museums for free, would say even if you go for like 4 museums it will still pay you back. As for my personal recommendations, museum of trains in Utrecht is a joy to go to in the winter because then they would have a ice-rink in the museum itself, Aviodrome, Naturalis due to them having a live watching space to see how they clean up dinosaur bones and the humongous skeletons they have of them, Archeon a open air museum, but yeah do check it out. We do love our museums here haha
We have a list and I added your suggestions. Thanks!
Really enjoying the journey, thanks for taking us along for the ride Jiles. 👍👊
Thanks for watching!
"Netherlands my home, wherever I may roam..." 🙃
I love you videos on the netherlands. I'm interested myself into making the move. The only thing I'd change about your videos, would be that they were longer lol thanks for all you do!
You've got a couple of excellent World Citizens. You're parenting sounds like mine. Neither of my children chose to go to Uni, but to trade schools instead. They both love their jobs of choice and are living very nice lives. I'm excited about your choice to move countries. I enjoy hearing about it, so thanks!
the wall has a great buffet there i went last year when i turned 30
This is so Awesome✨. I'm so happy for the move your family has made. You and your wife are doing an amazing job raising amazing kids 💙.
My oldest is starting middelbare school next year. She will be going to a tto school, might be interesting for your oldest as well. She will have a lot of classes in English and some in Dutch the first 3 years.
heel positief allemaal ,ga zo door. !!
Nice video! Go on !! 👍
Welcome in the area, for the first 30 years i lived in Utrechts old center but for the last 20 in the new part you are now also in and its slowly becoming into its own. Hope you enjoy the area and its nice to see how people react when moving here. Next to the channel i run on under this name i also run a class (new) bicycle riding channel (dutch biccyle rides) that mostly start in leidsche rijn. subbed to see how you are getting along..
I'd love to hear a bit more about your kids reaction to your decision to move. I just keep thinking when i was that age the thought of moving away to a foreign country away from my friends would have been so tough.
I understand they were obviously on board as you wouldn't have done it but still....
Love your channels x
I always wanted to go to Amsterdam but it never worked out. I love these daily life videos. It's like having a friend who lives there and can tell you all about it. Also love the SICKO shirt!
Go to as in visit I presume? That's alright. I can stomach an afternoon of Amsterdam about once a year. Genuinely feel like it ranks among a shortlist of the worst cities to live in in the country though.
Thanks Jiles
Random, but have you checked out the music scene yet? My husband and I go to AMS a few times a year to attend various concerts! The next one is state of trance in Rotterdam in Feb! If you don’t listen to dance music, armin van buuren is very well known there! :)
Interesting...
Hey Jiles ! Can you next talk about the health care system there ❤
I can’t because I don’t have any experience with it. I have a couple more weeks before I’ll have my BSN and will then be able to sign up for insurance and find a doctor. Once I have some experience with that, I will talk about it.
well,thats easy
you must have a BASIC healthcare insurance( you cant live here and not have one ) unless your an illigal person
if you want extra dental care or other or more special care you hav to pay extra monthly
you can choose from several different ones, but in general there are 5 big ones
you do have a own risk for 385 euros each year
BASIC cost for the insurance is around 145 euros a month
And in the US I paid $1,500 a month for insurance and the they tried to deny literally everything my doctor tried to have me do. Every procedure and every medication. And before we moved I tried to get a 3 month supply of my meds but they refused to cover it so I ended up paying $1,200 out of pocket… Because my $1,500 a month insurance wouldn’t cover it.
we all know how bad the healthcare system is in th so called GREAT USA 😅@@jileswithaj
@@aardbei07 Yup, that is a fourth world level (and getting worse).
I assume when you talk about "taalschool" for your oldest you mean the "Internationale Schakelklas", like Ithaka? A year or 1.5 years on the ISK and the kids is supposed to roll into a normal Dutch secondary school? My spouse taught math in an ISK in The Hague and he loved it very much. I agree with you that it is easier to enroll in the Dutch school system that way, though there are options with international schools too (I know Dutch kids that preferred going to the International school, but obviously they already had a very Dutch basis).
Yes, the Taalklas is basically an ISK where you learn Dutch, math and stuff about the Netherlands and the Dutch, and then after a year kids move on to regular education. In the last month or so they already go to their new school once a week for a smooth transition.
I really want to go one day
Native English speakers need some basic understanding of their language related to the West Germanic languages group, with Dutch, Frisian and German languages... English is the fourth sibling of those other languages. So, English and Frisian are the closest, next to that is English and Dutch. In my opinion it's most handy to know how in Dutch written words are pronounced in Dutch.. quite often you will hear a familiar English word with the same meaning. Most words written the same or alike in both languages mean the same in both languages, even pronounced different.
that place looks like the jawas' land crawler
How’s the food there and prices?
The food quality is better than the US. Obviously they have better regulations that don’t allow for profit over people. The prices are good as well. Food prices seem about the same. Other goods like cleaning supplies and personal items are cheaper. Our house utilities are cheaper. Gas is much more expensive.
When you live here long enough, you'll realise how silly "be safe" sounds 😊
Well, UA-cam is global, so I still encourage people to be safe.
@@jileswithaj I figured 😊
children are like sponges , if anything the time is now 2 make them learn a different language .
i have no problem speaking english since we learned it when were young , tv , school , friends.
if they like it here and do want 2 stay or just Bragg about the fact that they know 2 language's .
its definitely a (as soon as possible situation), since until they decide 2 use there wings , they are surrounded by the language itself , which not many people have the privilege of experiencing.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🙂💥💥💥💥
North, east south and west. A dutchie will not say that if you ask for directions.
Hi, i just discovered your channel, and it made me curious about your story. A lot of very promising titels. "Americans with a functioning brain are hard to find during the upcoming elections." 😂
Let me start with your first videos so we can "talk" later.
André
ps. I hope that your family will feel at home after a while.
Is communicating with the locals a problem?
No. Most people here speak English and we’re learning Dutch. I have an app on my phone where I can point the camera at something written in Dutch and it will translate it to English.
@@jileswithaj that is great! I wish you and your family much happiness in your new environment.
@@TranslateToEnglish The Dutch are the best non native English speakers in the world.
You're the only person that sounds like AI but isn't 😁
Dutch in similar to Afrikaans. Soon you'll be able to pronounce "Griekwastad" correctly. LOL.
*THE NETHERLANDS is the worst country in **-AMERICA!-*
(Parody - not to be taken seriously!).
That looked like so much fun!! I'm glad things are going well for everyone! 💖
They are. Thanks!
Hey girl! I saw your New Year’s Eve vid but I was in Tennessee stuck in a snow storm and wasn’t able to make a comment to tell you happy new year! I didn’t know you had more than one channel (Or did you change your name?) I’m going to be traveling back & forth to CA and Miami a lot for the next several weeks so I won’t be as active here, but I was so happy to see your name and wanted to give you a hug before I head out the door! I hope 2024 brings you good health and new beginnings! It’s so nice to see your name here and know you’re okay!
@@BucketHeadianHagg HEY LADY!!! I've been wondering about you! I figured you were busy but I hoped I would hear from you again! Happy New Year's! And lucky... Stuck in a snow storm... LoL You know how much I love snow! 😁😁😁 What part of TN were you in? I grew up in Clarksville but I'm from Fort Campbell. Always wanted to go back... NM just doesn't get enough snow for me, lol 🤣 And I actually do have a backup channel (GreyGoddess) but this is the only one I use really.
Hey if you ever pop into NM doing all your travels, let me know! It would be nice to meet and hang out, even for a little while. :) I'm so glad to hear from you and know you're doing okay! It's been a minute! 💖💖💖
@@retard_activated I was in Shelbyville which is near Murphysboro. The snow was beautiful, but you know I love the desert. We have snow here too, but not on the Vegas strip. It’s behind, on Mt Charleston, about 45 mins away. I’ll stay in touch for sure, and yes of course I’d love to see you in NM. It’s not at all beyond the realm of possibility! Sending love on you, my sister. Stay safe and be well.
