Thanks. That's a good suggestion. When we came up with our tests, we were primarily trying to test the abilities that a person using the camera on an R/C plane or model rocket. We will remember to do indoor tests in the future.

We only briefly touched on the photograph/JPEG feature and didn't really get into the webcam feature because these did not seem really useful for aerial videography. The webcam is something we should have mentioned because it is actually useful when mounting the camera to insure it is pointed correctly. Thanks for the feedback and suggestion!
Try pressing the reset button on the side next to the USB port. There is a tiny hole in the case which has a pushbutton behind it. You press the button with a bit of wire like a paper clip. That will do a hard reset on the camera.
At room temperature our tests concluded that (with only the internal battery) this model will record just over 40 minutes. The time goes down as the temperature decreases. If you supply an external power source through the USB jack, you can get as much as 10 hours (Limited by the storage space on a 32G memory card).

You will need to take the back off the case and look inside. The light sensor in these cameras is fastened in with either sticky foam tape or with hot melt glue. In either case it sounds like they stuck it in tilted. You may be able to fix it by just pressing on the plastic back of the lens where it is stuck and levelling it out. If it wants to keep slipping back you will have to add some extra tape or glue to hold it in the correct place and then reassemble it.
The recording times of this camera are limited by the battery life. You can usually find people who sell these on Ebay will often include an external battery pack or car power adapter, that way you can record a lot longer without running out of power.
Yes, we evaluated the #16 camera back in December and were given the links to the utilities and such. The dreary weather at that time of the year makes for boring videos, so we didn't fly it much. It had poorer low light performance than the #11 version, which may be important to you. The #3 version in this video simply has no easy way to remove the time like the #11 and #16.
@dkfa Sorry to scare you... it was a joke. Those small cameras are notorious for date stamping that cannot be turned off! We were told this camera would not have the date omnscreen, so we were pretty scared too when we first looked at the camera video. Thanks for your feedback.

They were testing the myth that a man flew using a water rocket jetpack, and they wanted to show what an advanced water rocket was capable of. They used footage of our rocket as an example.
There is a small camera called the "HD Wing Camera" sold by Hobby King that they claim will record for 3 hours. That's the best one we've seen, but there are so many new ones coming out we don't know if there are any better.
Are you sure that you have the same camera? There are perhaps 10 different copies of this design that all look nearly identical, but each one has different circuits inside and different software. The reason it seems like you have a different model is that none of the ones we bought came with a CD. The software for this model will almost surely not work on another version.

Either the camera you have is a different model which has a different method to connect as a drive, or the camera is defective, or the USB cable is defective. The MOST common defect is the cheap USB cables that come with these cameras. Try a different cable first. That is usually the problem. You should also make sure the memory card you installed in the camera is not defective. Good luck!
You turn the camera on and then plug it into your PC. It should appear on your desktop the same way you would access a USB thumbdrive. If it does not show up, the cable may be bad.
Have you tried making the microphone hole larger in the case? The pinhole they provide does not line up with the microphone element and can be improved if you drill it out a bit. The problem is worst with the #16 camera.
The Type #11 does not have anything like this, but there are newer versions like the Type #16 that let you change the settings with a PC program connected over USB.
The charging LED differs in color and behavior from model to model, so you have to consult the instructions for your model. A complete list of models can be found at chucklohr.com if you want to learn about them all.

Yes, this is a 1280x720 version. there are many clones of this camera and some are only 640x480 at the sensor and they stretch the aspect ratio to make the video file higher resolution to try and fool people. This version really is 1280x720p.
There is no official name for it because it is a clone of a clone of a clone of a camera. They are usually sold under the name "808" "keychain" "car keys" "key fob" camera. You have to look closely at the specs to make sure you're not getting a crap VGA version (one of the anscestors of this camera) you can see a breakdown of all the clones at www.chucklohr.com
The ones we used could focus that close, but there are some people who have shown the same camera with a different lens module which we never tested. So, we can't say every single camera will have the lens we tested, since we know there are differences.
If you have owned it for a long time, then the problem is probably a drained battery. If you drain the battery too much, it cannot be recharged and makes for a dead camera. If the camera is new, then it must be a defective one and you should send it back for replacement.
No, these cameras have a cheap plastic case with seams and holes that let water right in. You must put them inside a waterproof container with a window in it if you use them in the water.
Well done, excellent review. I have some question. As you mentioned it is good for areal video shooting. Can I use it for FPV system as camera? Can it send live image by cable to transmitter & at same time records the video? If so does the quality of image reduce? I notice it fade in strong lighting condition like turning to the sun. Does image quality improve by using filters? Thanks
There are several variations of this camera now, so the chances of getting a clone are pretty high. The quality is amazing though for the price you pay!
@tonnhard The manufacturer claims that the cameras made since 5/2011 have a better picture. The firmware that comes in these models they say will improve the older model as well. Is it possible that the one you have now has the older firmware? On the other hand, the quality of the parts used in these cameras can vary from one camera to the next, so you may have gotten a "dud". Most of the sellers will exchange it for you if you pay shipping. So far we have had none die. (Unlike the 808 Type #3)
Thanks for your relpy. I tried another USB cable and it didn't work either. The card is a brand new Sanddisk Class 6 micro bought from a well know camera shop in my local area. I think I may have to send it back which is a pain because I have to wait another 2 weeks for it to get back to China, then another 2 weeks back to me in Australia so that's a real pain in the arse. ?.

@klisura1973 The people who make these cameras are constantly changing/updating the design and so over time the chances of something being changed that will make mods fail to work grow larger. But with any firmware upgrade (even of a professional device like an iPod) there's always a slim chance you can break the device. This modification is no different, but the sellers on ebay are very good and if you tell them it didn't take the upgrade they will exchange the broken canera.

Yes, the people who sell these cameras typically sell an upgrade for the sensor module that you can swap out, but it is really only the lens you need. It just screws in. You have to make sure you get a lens with matching threads, which is hard to measure, so we just get the whole module because it's not much more expensive than the lens itself.
USWaterRockets Thanks for your reply.I have one of these cameras but it has a very narrow field of view and looks magnified...i mean the narrow view angle makes it useless..its seems to be a screw in lens.i was wandering if i could adjust the field of view by turning it clockwise or anticlockwise.
Ese Callum Oh! Now I understand. Sadly, screwing the lens in and out will only change the focus from close-in to far-away. It will not make the view angle any wider. You will need a new screw-in lens for a wider field of view. The lenses which are wide are much bigger than the one you have. Your only other option is to look for a generic "wide angle" lens for cellphones. These things are pretty cheap and are meant to stick over a cellphone camera and modify the viewing angle. These can work with these small cameras if you can rig a way to hold it in place over the lens of the keychain camera.
I left the 808 Car Keys Camera just arrived charging over night ( cos the led was blinking when I connect it to the PC) well in the morning the led was off (meant is fully charged ok?) but nothing work was dead... anyway I connect again and start blinking (charging I suppose) after a few minutes I try again ... according with the instructions on your video...work but does not change from photo to video (no rapid blinking shown) any body can help pls thanks
Very good review. Any new cameras tested? I have one that is 720x480 - no model number, though I have looked for circuit boards to compare it too, nothing matches it. The mode and shutter buttons work the same way so safe to say it is an 808 and it costs only $10. I want to replace it with a good 720p model so I'll have to spend a little more...
There are a lot of improved cameras that have come out since this camera was made and we did this video. You have many to choose from. We've messed around with many of them and plan on doing more with them in the future. Thanks for the tip, anyhow!
I ordered cheapo version of this keychain camera from Hong Kong and "surprisingly" it has much worse image quality + video playback is choppy. Plus the LED stays lid forever when charging and I must guess when battery is full. Beware cheap copies.

If feedback is good, then you have the right seller. Some versions of the 808 camera allow recording use while charging, but the majority of them do not. They will only allow you to use them as a USB memory device for transferring the files from the card on the camera. You have to look at the specific directions for the model of 808 camera (Type #11, Type #16, Type #20, etc.) you own. The models are quite different.

+hamza nizar If the battery becomes all swelled up, then it is failing. You will probably notice that it no longer will operate the camera for the same length of time before needing a charge. You should consider changing the battery because it will soon fail completely.

+hamza nizar You need a power source of about 4.5 Volts to run the camera, so three common alkaline batteries connected in series would power the camera just fine. If you have small 1.5V rechargeable batteries like for a flashlight or something, you could use those in place of the battery as well. Just make sure you do not try and recharge batteries you install yourself with the camera's charging circuit. It could cause a fire. The camera can only charge a LiPo battery. Other batteries need to be disconnected when you plug the USB cable in the camera.
It does that when it can't read the memory card. Either it's not inserted properly, is not compatible with the camera, or the card or camera is defective.
These cameras are often made using low priced contractors who use leftover or salvaged components. Some types of 808 camera are known to have bad quality. It is a risk you accept when you get a HD camera for $30 or a VGA camera for $7.

These cameras are often made from low quality or even recycled parts. They have a very high failure rate. Luckily, the people who sell them on ebay will usually replace them if they die.
Probably because it's not an 808 Type #11. There are now about 30 different versions of this camera on the market. Some are cheap clones of cheap clones. See www.chucklohr.com/808/index.shtml for a breakdown of all models.
This is an older review of this style of camera. The Type #11 reviewed here has been upgraded since this video was made to the Type #18 version. The specs for the Type #18 say it can only go as high as 32GB MicroSD.

None of ours ever have had a number on the back. The best way to tell is to look for the yellow time stamp numbers and the 720x480 resolution.

These can work with these small cameras if you can rig a way to hold it in place over the lens of the keychain camera.

I left the 808 Car Keys Camera just arrived charging over night ( cos the led was blinking when I connect it to the PC) well in the morning the led was off (meant is fully charged ok?) but nothing work was dead... anyway I connect again and start blinking (charging I suppose) after a few minutes I try again ... according with the instructions on your video...work but does not change from photo to video (no rapid blinking shown) any body can help pls thanks
When i plug mine into the computer it doesn't recongise it as a drive it only charges ?. I have it swictched on before plugging into the computer ?.
Very good review. Any new cameras tested? I have one that is 720x480 - no model number, though I have looked for circuit boards to compare it too, nothing matches it. The mode and shutter buttons work the same way so safe to say it is an 808 and it costs only $10. I want to replace it with a good 720p model so I'll have to spend a little more...
I seen 1080 p internals battery included for sale on ebay for about 25 dollars . Check it out You could just replace the guts .

Saw an 808 #20 1080p for $30. Found 1080p internals for $26. It's all a shot in the dark.

I picked up a cheapo on Amazon and it works the resolution is 640 I believe . But it does what it says it does .
I ordered cheapo version of this keychain camera from Hong Kong and "surprisingly" it has much worse image quality + video playback is choppy. Plus the LED stays lid forever when charging and I must guess when battery is full. Beware cheap copies.

@SLAYERX55 try any of these ebay sellers. Check feedback before you buy and look to see if there are complaints of the camera being not a "Type #11". If feedback is good, then you have the right seller. These cameras seem to only be sold on ebay.

You need the HD version for that. It costs more/ Look for the 808 Type #16. Beware there are a lot of fakes out there.

Can we operate de 808 Car Keys Camera while is charging?
Some versions of the 808 camera allow recording use while charging, but the majority of them do not. They will only allow you to use them as a USB memory device for transferring the files from the card on the camera. You have to look at the specific directions for the model of 808 camera (Type #11, Type #16, Type #20, etc.) you own. The models are quite different.

+hamza nizar If the battery becomes all swelled up, then it is failing. You will probably notice that it no longer will operate the camera for the same length of time before needing a charge. You should consider changing the battery because it will soon fail completely.

+hamza nizar You need a power source of about 4.5 Volts to run the camera, so three common alkaline batteries connected in series would power the camera just fine. If you have small 1.5V rechargeable batteries like for a flashlight or something, you could use those in place of the battery as well. Just make sure you do not try and recharge batteries you install yourself with the camera's charging circuit. It could cause a fire. The camera can only charge a LiPo battery. Other batteries need to be disconnected when you plug the USB cable in the camera.
Why does mind turn on lasts like 10 seconds and turns off?
It does that when it can't read the memory card. Either it's not inserted properly, is not compatible with the camera, or the card or camera is defective.

These cameras are often made using low priced contractors who use leftover or salvaged components. Some types of 808 camera are known to have bad quality. It is a risk you accept when you get a HD camera for $30 or a VGA camera for $7.
am having the same one but am not able to record anything nor take any pics, the lights are sometimes flashing as you have demonstrated, but when i open the memory card all the files read 0 kb. Please help me
These cameras are often made from low quality or even recycled parts. They have a very high failure rate. Luckily, the people who sell them on ebay will usually replace them if they die.

Probably because it's not an 808 Type #11. There are now about 30 different versions of this camera on the market. Some are cheap clones of cheap clones. See www.chucklohr.com/808/index.shtml for a breakdown of all models.

This is an older review of this style of camera. The Type #11 reviewed here has been upgraded since this video was made to the Type #18 version. The specs for the Type #18 say it can only go as high as 32GB MicroSD.
