@Anonymous52550 I'll answer this question and your other one here... The 808 #16 is the best camera between these two by quite some margin. It is also the best tiny consumer HD camera as well. The main reason you would choose it over the Y3000 is because of the .h264 file format which results in no dropped frames (jerky video) - the Y3000 uses the dreaded mjpeg format.
Im kinda glad I left my 808 #11 in my sweater while doing laundry, now i have an excuse to get the #16. The new features are definitely more awesome. Thanks so much for taking the time to put out these very informative reviews.
@creatinedaniel You have to change the settings to get it to flash whilst recording...the video explains how to do this. Make sure your card is formatted as FAT or FAT32.
@ll1lI i like the vibration function in the three action camera I have in to test at the moment, it makes things a lot more obvious...especially when the sun bleaches out the lights. The LEDs in these cameras are very bright though....almost laser brightness.
Yes you lose 3 seconds between each clip (approx), and you choose how long you want those clips to be. The gap might be less now with the newer firmware...but I didn't re-test it.
Thanks, I used your video reviews to decide on a #11 a good few months ago. My girlfriend wants a car camera now so I remembered your username and came back to check on the latest cameras... you've filled me in yet again! Thanks
Thanks a million for this review! (And all of the others!) Just ordered one of these based solely on your great and in-depth reviews on the series. Love your style, and thanks for taking the time (on the 25th of December of all days) to get this video done! Merry Christmas!
It just looks like the old #11 but with video-out added. It still uses two different USB leads, one for charging and one for data - so I don't think it's got any of the new features of the #16 camera. I think I'll skip that one.
@Techmoan As an FPV pilot, I see it is clear that the # 11's lens is far wider than the #16.. you can clearly see how much closer everything seems on the #16 as well. This >also< will make the #11 videos look more detailed as there is more information for a given area..so the only way you will compare is to make sure they have the same FOV.
I'm gonna have to buy this one coz my #11 died last December 2011. And just so you know, I know you're not James. Thanks for another awesome review, its very, very, very helpful.
@mrpetit2 i think that is very likely. I tried padding it out a bit to raise the lens up and push it against the front of the case...but just ended up defocussing it. It is possible that they modified the case to correct this after they made mine.
thank u very much for taking the time to respond to my questions about the #16 808 i finally got it to work,it's kind of weird that they didn't send any instructions with the cam, glad your on you tube to help
_I started using this little cam. again after 10 years. Still going great. ..That is a brilliant tutorial & I've now decided to purchase the mobius cam..ℳ∁... Tip: You can view recorded video clips from Keychain/Mobius Cam.on your phone by using an O.T.G.cable. It works for me_
@Belkamaniac Not if it would have to fit in the case. The chaps on the RC Forums are looking into connectors to extend the battery wires out beyond the case - have a look over there.
@vacalorenzis I think the #16 should be the best one - the one I tested was a bit out of focus and with early firmware. I bought a new one, but haven't really tried it out properly yet. Look out though for a 1080p Jumbo camera…that has potential to change things up again. I've ordered one, but a review will take a few weeks. Chinese New Year will delay despatch from HK.
Definitely going to do that later, i really need a cheap cam to mount on my motorcycle. i was just astonished much effort you put into your videos and try to include as much information as possible. There should be one version of you for every type of hobby, may it be small cams, cars, tablets, motorcycles or even rc planes
@diiebane Out of those two, probably the #16 now. However I still prefer my, Jumbo to both, due to it's longer battery life and the one I own has an especially sharp picture. Focus has been very hit and miss in the past though, you could just as likely get a soft Jumbo and a pin sharp #16 and then I'd have to go for the #16.
But what software are you playing them back in. 1) Get the files off the SD card and onto your hard drive. 2) Try playing the files in a different program, perhaps, VLC as I suggested before.
Fantastic! I use mine on rc planes and your guide helped so much. One stop shopping for this camera. Loved your Zoolander reference. LOL! Thanks for your time.
Hi Techmoan, I received the 808#16 today and YES it's great! I took your review for the first steps and everything wworks fine. Thanks for your reviews
@fonsie41 Are you sure that the problem isn't with your PC. Any problems I've heard about with video 'recording' or playback have all actually been caused at the PC end. Download the K-lite codec pack for your computer and try some different playback software. Failing that, try playing the files from your camera on someone else's PC.
@jrhurt76 I suspect you may have formatted your cards as NTFS rather than FAT. Re-format the cards using the camera. Here are the Instructions on how to do this.... • Put the SD card in your camera, connect it up via the USB cable to your PC & turn it on so that it shows up as a removable disk. • Press and hold down the Shutter button. DO NOT RELEASE the button. • Disconnect the camera from the computer. • After a few seconds the camera will turn off. • Release the shutter button.
@alexmach3000 Yes, Hi Brian here, glad you are checking out my youtube videos. Since Freddy died and the other one left the group - you know that tall chap who never said much, I've been at a bit of a loose end, so decided to spend my time reviewing things on youtube.
The 808 #16 is an awesome little camera, but for RC plane applications I further recommend adapting the 808 #16 camera to run off of your receiver's 5VDC. Then you can remove the battery all together making it the plane lighter and ensuring that the recording lasts the entire flight. I did it on my plane and it works great. I got the adapter cable on ebay by searching "808 #16 receiver"
The #16 is a superb camera! Whilst I don't use it as a "dash cam", I do use it to video my walks and talks in the park (I'm a Ranger in a US national park", the quality is remarable. A bit of Velcro holds it nicely on the brim of my hat. I own a number of different "dash cams", but for size, image quality, battery life (about 40 minutes) and utter convenience, I keep just coming back to this little camera. Can't wait for the review on the new #26 (full 1080P) ! Great reviews!
@Anonymous52550 You can only get this camera from eBay from the seller ELETOPONLINE365. The camera you were looking at wasn't HD, it recorded at 740x480.
I don't think there is enough new about the #16 V2 to warrant another review from me...It looks like everything can be summed up in a few words, wider lens and AV out. I'll wait for them to bring out a proper water resistant camera in a decent case. In case anyone is gong to ask...No, they haven't said that they are doing this...I'm just hoping.
The #16 can be used for motion activation. A recent firmware update gives you this option. But keep in mind that tests have shown that even in motion detection mode the battery last about 80 minutes at most (since it is in a kind of standby mode) with a good, fully charged battery. If you plan on using it for HOURS in motion activation mode you'd need to attach an external battery.
@redhawk000 I think this has been fixed since my review. See my review of the 1080p Jumbo cam. In that video you can see a new 808#16 compared against the Jumbo 720p that has the same FOV as the #11
If you purchase a wide angle lens on Ebay for the 808 #11, the light problem will be much better as wide angle lenses are constructed with the assumption that the sun will be in view. Just a heads up in case you're wondering about which one to purchase.
I'm currently testing the new 2013 mini cams, Möbius and 808#26. Both are true 1080p cameras and quite a step up in quality. More details coming in a few weeks.
You could seriously get hired to do stuff like this if companies really wanted to do an unbiased opinion of their products as the people using them see them. Thanks very much for your considerable time and effort, it was most helpful! Robert
@pultsted At one point I managed to get tiny sparks to fly out of it with a screwdriver...that was the point that I thought I'd killed it. So when I was manhandling it in the video I assumed that it was already knackered. However, rather surprisingly when I put it all back together, after charging it for a while it came back to life. So all I need to do now is sort out that focussing issue. Thanks for the concern though...maybe I should have a 'Do not try to copy any of the things...type message
I don't know if you will read this but thank you very detailed review. I plan on getting the #16 and making an impact resistant case for it so I can use it with my paintball gun. It will be more cost effective for me and good luck in your future endeavors.
@gittarpikk I think it probably is - I really need to get them both lined up properly to be able to see how much wider. I think the chaps on the RC groups forums will probably have a more scientific measurement of this than I could do.
My friend has a #3 camera with a battery about half the size of mine. It is also a LiPo battery, with 3.7V nominal voltage. (I'm guessing they all use the same type) With the battery minimally charged I measured about 3.5~3.7V but I assembled it all back, and everything is working fine.
@HiLuckyB I can't compare the two as I've damaged my 16. The 16's latest firmware has apparently improved the low light performance now - check out the RCforums for some samples.
I'm pretty sure on the #11 you can use the same USB cable for both data and charging, it is a standard MINI B port. It is advised you use one with the ferrite core for data, as that would reduce noise and data corruption. I don't think there's any effect of using one with a ferrite core for charging, either. Charging is simply done with 2 pins rather than all 4 and does so when connected to a PC anyway, so it doesn't matter what type of cord you have, just so long as the connectors work.
@minecraftdud It's my old Sony HDR-TG3 camcorder. This is the first video I've made since I invested in a photographers light table and lights - so if it looks a bit sharper, that will be the reason. Unfortunately something went a bit wrong during the encoding process so I had to encode the video twice, which added some blocking into the video.
i could listen to you for hours (actually i just did), i just don't know how you can talk for 21 minutes non stop about something like this and not get boring at all. Keep up the good work, even if you are not James May :)
@ThePerfectBreakdown I'd recommend the 16 - the firmware is being improved all the time and I believe that it is even better now than when I reviewed it, I've damaged mine though so I've ordered a new one from eletoponline365.
If the ribbon cable section (lens to PCB) was lengthened then this would be an awesome stealth/spy cam. Just been looking at some other reviews on youtube and amazed how many don't even include captures from the cam being reviewed. You are still quality.
@vta1985 This was a test of a pre-production 808#16 - You can see the final release version of the 808#16 in my test of the Jumbo 1080p camera and there you'll see that the low light and FOV have been improved considerably. The 808#16 is now a lot better than the #11, the Jumbo 720p & the Jumbo 1080p.
@beerman1957 I think its mostly people from the US. I suppose that James May must sound closer than the other brits they see on TV, Simon Cowell, Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay. Occasionally I get likened to Ringo Starr...that's even more bizarre to me.
I agree, it just hacks me off to know that the internals are probably widely used in many of the more expensive "HD Cameras". Do you have a favorite 'budget' helmet camera at the moment?
1:53 You can also find them on DealExtreme and Aliexpress. The later has some very good prices if you look around. I got my first keyring camera from them for 3$ including shipping!
I'm not going to review any more 808 cams until they put them inside a proper housing. I also feel that there is little that's new for me to say about each minor iteration that I didn't already cover. I just don't find them, fun or interesting any more.
I have bought this HD Camera based on this review Many Thanks TechMoan. I plan to have this flying high on my AR Drone. When I do I will link any interested in the Camera to this fab video review. GJ!
@sefgrt This was one of the last reviews I did with my trusty Sony HDR-TG3. More recent reviews have been shot with my new Sony HX100V (better low light capability and wider angle lens).
Thanks, but I hope I've improved a bit since making this one - the #16 improved after I made this as well - see my later video about it called "Mini Spy Cams - New 1080p....."
Ask the ebayer that sells the camera (Eletoponline365) this question - they could probably do a quick courier delivery for you - I've had stuff from HK in 2 days. I've got to re-iterate that the only people who sell this camera are also the same people who make the camera and they only sell through their ebay store(s). Nowhere Else.
I've got this 808 #16 after watching your video review and it's amazing compared to my previous gadgets. Thanx for giving a gr8 detailed info on mini camera recorders & other cam devices :). Can you also PLEASE look into some HD motion detecting camera alarm clocks & watches too?? I've been looking for some for a long time but the ones I found on net/ youtube are either lacking good HD outputs or lack in voice recording.
@pav2k In some scenes it does look wider..but because of my problems framing the scenes the same, I couldn't do a perfectly lined up side by side comparison. When I get some time, I'll try some more tests.
I love watching camcorder reviews on Y.T. However I think your camera reviews are way ahead of the rest. Your speaking voice is very suitable for radio/ tv work. I've just ordered the above based on your recommendation.
@ASIANPRIDE50 When will it turn up?...thats it the lap of the postal gods. Where is it from? My 1080p Jumbo came from eletech086. It hasn't turned up yet - so I can't vouch for it or them,
Nice review again. Do you think that the offset filming of the #16 is a consequence of the camerasensor being loose / only connected by the ribbon cable and that the housing maybe a bit roomy so that the sensor is not boxed in enough by the housing so that it can flap around a bit in the housing? In the old #11 it's soldered so the circuit board holds it in place.

@novusvan That page doesn't exist any more - but if the seller is eletoponline365 and the camera is the 808 #16 then yes it is the same one.
Thanks a million for this review! (And all of the others!) Just ordered one of these based solely on your great and in-depth reviews on the series. Love your style, and thanks for taking the time (on the 25th of December of all days) to get this video done! Merry Christmas!
@jarus187 No buzz, no crackling - this was one of the things they fixed in this model.

@Alexzone45 I think it will - something I didn't check though, so will get back to you on that.
I'm from the U.S. in Ohio. You have a great voice for doing this type of voice over work. Your videos are very good and explained very well.
@vacalorenzis I think the #16 should be the best one - the one I tested was a bit out of focus and with early firmware. I bought a new one, but haven't really tried it out properly yet.

@locouk No, the buzzing and crackling have been eliminated on this new model.

Techmoan - I just love your random humour. I monitor all your reviews because I find your presentations quite entertaining. Keep 'em coming.

@kasuno1 You can set the recording segments to any of the lengths shown in the setup file...all the way up to 70mins
@alexmach3000 Yes, Hi Brian here, glad you are checking out my youtube videos. Since Freddy died and the other one left the group - you know that tall chap who never said much, I've been at a bit of a loose end, so decided to spend my time reviewing things on youtube.

@OleVanDole I understand, unless you really need the video looping functionality, the Jumbo's battery life is still the deciding factor for me.
You used to comment a lot on your videos Mat.
I'm not familiar with that one. I'd recommend looking at Chuck Lohr's 808 website for info on all the known 808s.
@Anonymous52550 You can only get this camera from eBay from the seller ELETOPONLINE365. The camera you were looking at wasn't HD, it recorded at 740x480.
I think this should be a good bet for you. You'll need to dampen down the vibrations with some sponge rubber or something though....
Brilliant video mate!! I've seen both the #11 and #16 reviews and I must say, both are simply crystal clear and thoroughly informative. Good job.

Robert
I read all the comments....but I don't always manage to reply because it would be a full time job on its own. Thanks for the feedback.
Wow! I wish everybody would take the time to make great videos like this. You answered all my questions and much more!! Thank you.
@dagr8al Segments can be 5, 20, 40, 70 as seen onscreen at the 14:26 mark.
I don't know if you will read this but thank you very detailed review. I plan on getting the #16 and making an impact resistant case for it so I can use it with my paintball gun. It will be more cost effective for me and good luck in your future endeavors.
They fixed the FOV with a later firmware update. Check my video review of the 1080p jumbo where I test it against the improved 808#16.
It's a great little camera - but needs a different case, longer battery and water resistance before it can really be used as a helmet cam.
@mukeleff I have no idea if the battery can be soldered into a #3....but you can always ask the manufacturer Eletoponline365
Great review. Looks like a nice little camera. I ve got one of the older ones knocking about somewhere, must dig it out.
i could listen to you for hours (actually i just did), i just don't know how you can talk for 21 minutes non stop about something like this and not get boring at all.
Keep up the good work, even if you are not James May :)
@cscarlet696 I agree - although this may just have been a problem with my camera.
The 808#16 is the best one currently available
I just bought the #16 V2 camera.. how good is the battery? How many times can it be charged?
@poppat22 I was demonstrating how long a picture takes - not taking pictures for the family album.
Thanks for a really thorough review. You have a very fine speaking voice. A pleasure to listen to.
@pontexx In my opinion - Yes.

I'd go for an 8GB....it's been a while since I used the #16 but I seem to remember it using about 5GB on one charge.
I agree, it just hacks me off to know that the internals are probably widely used in many of the more expensive "HD Cameras". Do you have a favorite 'budget' helmet camera at the moment?
@leonpadi I demonstrated in the video how the lens if attached to a ribbon cable which opens up some more modding options.
@bonafidepirate Yes a Jumbo version of this one would be a welcome addition.
@lozcs I've seen bike mounts for the Jumbo 808, but not for this style...perhaps someone else here might like to help.
@udical It's better than the one in my 3G - if you mean the iPhone4S then, no.
Great review. You have the perfect voice for narration.
@fonsie41 10 is better than 7 - but it's unlikely that you'll be able to spot the difference.
@mrbogdan441 Yes and a Merry Christmas to you to.
Greetings from Yorkshire! Loving the videos so far, just spent an hour going through your uploads. Keep up the good work.
There is a link on my blog.....which is linked to in the video description.
Yes it should do.
Sounds more like your PC. Try playing the video in VLC Video LAN Client.
I love watching camcorder reviews on Y.T. However I think your camera reviews are way ahead of the rest. Your speaking voice is very suitable for radio/ tv work. I've just ordered the above based on your recommendation.
Wicked reviews - can't wait for the 808 #26 review to come out
@ASIANPRIDE50 When will it turn up?...thats it the lap of the postal gods. Where is it from? My 1080p Jumbo came from eletech086. It hasn't turned up yet - so I can't vouch for it or them,
@Anonymous52550 Class 6 or higher but the size is up to you.
Merry Christmas, TechMoan!
@fonsie41 Update your PC codecs. I'd suggest the K-Lite codec pack. Search for it on Google.
The camera you linked to only records at 15fps. Not for me, but thanks anyway.
@Techmoan thank you i have update the codecs and every thing is working fine, i will try too make a video this weekend on my motobike
