Step-by-step video instructions show how to fit the magnetic wide angled lenses to a Key Chain camera. (I used DealExtreme lenses.) Camera cases of all of the Key Cams whether HD or the original SD version, are all the same. At the end of the video there's a short clip comparing the angle of view of each lense as compared to the standard camera lense. The lenses I tested were found to be the best out of those available. DealExtreme lense part numbers at the end of the video. 0.67x lense and Fisheye lenses tested. RC Groups HD#16 thread is here www.rcgroups.co...
This is a great video! I plan to order this cam soon and thanks to you I know exactly which lenses to order and how to fit them. Top notch!
Thank you for making this informative how-to video!
Thanks a lot for making this video! I followed your instructions and managed to pull it off beautifully :)
Thanks. It's just a small Victorian house, but nice view across part of the town. The town is Brixham, check out some other vids which really show a lot more of it. The Samsung Video cam test shows a lot.
Fair enough mate, the good results of what you did are certainly there.
Enjoy!
@kasuno1 Yes that's correct. There is a curve to the front of the case, so if you don't cut it the lense will not be facing correctly forward.
Yes, agreed, as much as I've tried I couldn't totally eliminate a little vignetting. The fish eye worked a bit better I think with the 11# cam which had a slightly less wide angle.
Very good job!! I'll try to do the same with and old 480p cam that I don't use at all.
I have and idea, just glue one side of the case in order to open the case whenever you want. It will allow us to remove all the stuff inside the case and then use SuperGlue (the lens is not being hurt because is far away from the SuperGlue vapor).
Awesome idea. A suggestion: take the circuitry out and use a file, sanding block, or a belt sander to make the surface flat. I think it would turn out a bit cleaner than using a razor knife. Cool video though thx. Oh, and don't forget to replace the circuit board before gluing the ring.
+ajmckay2 Thanks mate, good idea!
Very cool thanks for posting! I've got the #16
@bobflyman I'm referring to a video on YT "How To Fix Aspect Ratio on already uploaded videos."....may be of use. Thanks again for all the tips. I use a Flip Camcorder myself..but I have ordered a 808#16 . Someday all camcorders will be this small...so handy.
PS It is possible to replace the lense module on some of the recent cameras. Open the case and check if the ribbon to the camera is soldered of put into a small clip. If the latter it's quite easy to fit a new one. See RC groups from details.
@bobflyman perhaps you could 1. remove the board, 2. run the re-assembled case across sandpaper to flat, re-assemble cam then superglue the steel ring. Although a new case altogether seems better approach. Something that might support nikon SLR lens mount could be the go...
@skotch40 Glad you enjoyed it mate. Did you see my latest test of the v 18 firmware?
@bored1980 I take your point. I have two or three mini tripods from suction cup types to 3 legged but not one one that's big enough for an overall view. It does add a certain touch of immediateness doing it without!
2 Tips: (1)To get rid of those black stripes at both sides of your video, just go to edit video and down at the end under tags add this tag yt:stretch=16:9 (and save of course)
(2) To record on macro mode just place a hand held magnifying glass over the lens...
It has been done by some people, but it's quite difficult to get the ring in exactly the right plane when glueing it. And it's important to prevent vignetting. (even worse now if fitting a 67 on a v2 16 cam with red lense, as it's wider) . If you had the ring split into two halves I'd say nigh on impossible to get them in the same plane and adjusted so you didn't get vignetting with the wide lense fitted.
There are two small washers supplied with the magnetic lense. It has double sided sticky tape on one side. You could use any suitable size mild steel washer.
I just did a small test videoing a bit of newsprint with standard, wide 0 67 and fisheye and although the print was legible it's not really in focus. The only way you'd get it in focus would be to split the case and refocus as is described on RC Groups HD#16 thread. (Link is above.) Not necessarily an easy job as the lense is lightly glued into the body and you have to break the glue seal before it will turn. It 's quite easy to break the thing!
@alexinshade I found that you can get some reflections from the inside edge of the hole in front of the lense so I bevelled the edge. It works. Best way is to remove the inards (don't touch the circuit board , hold by the edges) and use a small twist drill by hand. You can do it wil a scalpel blade alternatively. I wouldn't bother unless you have a problem. Have fun with the lense.
Excellent video, thanks. Can I politely suggest buying a cheap €20 tripod? I just bought a 808 #16 camera a few minutes ago and I like the idea of a fish-eye lens for use as a dashboard camera. Thanks again for a very helpful video.
It's tricky. Mostly by eye. Once you've ground the front down you can try it in web cam mode (Skype works well.) It's more critical to get it right with the fisheye or you get vignetting. (Black corners showing.) And yes, the ring stops the case being opened. Some people have tried splitting the ring in two but I think it would make it more difficult to align and glue.
I have never been able to make the fisheye work with splitting the ring nor leaving it whole. I get good results withe the .67 lens though. I have taken the case apart many times and have trimmed and flattened that area until the case is dangerously thin. I now have the new v2 with D lens and am quite happy. I just ordered a new A lens module but with the D lens I have now I think I'll give up while I'm ahead.
Epoxy based glue, like it comes in two tubes and you mix it together so it goes off. Strong stuff!
@RamjetAlpha1 No reason why not mate, I guess you could take out the board to avoid getting debris on the lense, but you still need to put the circuit board back in before you glue the ring on. You won't be able to open the case after you have fitted the ring!
Most can be charged while recording though some need a 'special' usb lead (often supplied with the camera.) Your best bet is to check out the RC Groups thread linked in the info above and search, or post the question there. I think it's in the FAQ's at the beginning of the thread as well. The 16 is the current version.
Not as far as I know. The latest version has a video out capability that can be switched on so it can be used for FPV flying.
@clarebannerman Thanks for tips. I have seen the codes mentioned. The video was made with an SD camcorder so is 640 x 480. Interestingly I tried the tag but it had no effect on the review part of the clip. The test clips do present as wide full screen. I've played with a few big lenses and magnifiers in front of the lense. Interestting results.
If you cut the metal ring carefully down the center, you could glue it to the two halves of the camera and then you can still remove the casing.
Thanks a lot for your efforts making the video! I think I go for a wide angle lens right away.
/Håkan
I have seen pictures where it's been tried, not sure how well it works though. You'd need the camera to fit the box well and be close to the lense I would think? Certainly worth a try. Let me know how you get on with the idea.
I have had the #16 V2 camera. I recently changed the firmware from 0.49 to 0,67 as well as the bootloader. I swear the lens now 'sees' more, as if the older firmware cropped the image the sensor could take in. It is the 'B' lens. I have got the 'D' lens & the appropriate case. The view with the 'D' lens seems vast compared to the 'B' lens.
Thank you very much...very helpful video.
@bobflyman thank you- it seems the fish eye lens edges show more than the wide angle lens edges in your test footage (the latter lens doesn't seem to show its edges at all)
@grey0powerlessnesss That's true. You can set it up in continuous loop recording useful as a traffic monitor.
The fisheye was just about useable with the 11 camera which I guess had a narrower field of view. I show it on one of my videos and the results were pretty good. (Except the 11's bad colour shift problems).Funnily enough I was just contemplating shaving some more from the case on my 16 v2 to try and get rid of the vignetting with the 0.67 lense. Mine has the red lense and it's superbly sharp. Not sure what I think about the d lense, a little too wide for my taste, but good for some applications.
Thanks Bob! Is there a reason you dd not split the case and remove the board, then do the shaving and boring work with the case halves together?
It's hard to see really how a change of firmware (I use 67) could change the amount of info the cmos sensor could see? Haven't tested the idea though. But I agree, I have both, there is a huge difference in AoV of the B and the D lenses!
Yep. It's one of those things you always learn the hard way ...
Problem is there are now 4 different lense versions of the 16# cam. I had similar problems when I tried a new lense version. I guess you are getting a very wide view though? You could maybe trim the frame in edit? I will add a note to say that some lense version will still have bad vignetting.
Hey mate do you use this for skydiving? I am currently considering it for the same use.
also how do you attach it to your helmet or body?
Nice video very instructive thanks alot!
Thanks I appreciate it. Nice video and write up on rcgroup.
Also-my main purpose of this cam is for rc flight videos-even with the ring epoxied to the cam, my concern is about the lens itself falling off in flight with the g forces involved as the strength of the magnet is pretty weak-any tips on more securely attaching the lens to the ring, without making it a 'permanent' attachment? Thanks again
@meandjesus4ever My lense came from DealExtreme, part numbers are at the end of the video. Hot glue would probably be ok. When the battery does need relacement, which shouldn't be a for a couple of years, the ring breaks off the epoxy quite easily so you can open the case. Of course you then need to re glue it, but usually the smooth surface where the ring sat is still there.
@alexinshade I've had 2 or 3 jelly lenses, they are ok for the money and for experimenting abit, but won't really do the camera justice. The DealExtreme lenses are glass and pretty sharp.
@justinspirational Not sure what to suggest apart from maybe a string to attach is and maybe blue tack or something? I've made a tube with glass in the end to secure it if I use it suspended in the canopy paragliding. Didn't have any probs with it falling off when I flew it on my leccy glider, but it's pretty gentle flight I guess.
Nice video. Is there a way to add a video input on this with some modification?
it fits almost perfectly in a tic tac case. A bit to tight on a buttons, but its easy to "repair" that :]
Hi.
How can you so sure that the ring is in the same plane as the camera module?
Only checking it from outside? (with your eye?)
And then the ring you glued on the case has united the two pieces of the case together?
I'm interesed in aplying your fantastic tutorial on my 808 jumbo #11, and I don't know which one did you used. Sku 39814 or 102101?. Thanks. Another thing, did you managed to do a holder for motorcycle?
If you are using the Deal Extreme lenses I'd be surprised. The cheap plastic lenses that cost just a couple of dollars are pretty bad though. Trouble is there are now 4 different lense versions of the 16 HD key cam and the wide lense won't work well with all of them. I think it's OK with the B lense version.
You cut it to make it parallel to the lens right? I don't understand much English, also it looks to me it's already parallel without cutting, but i suppose it's that.
beautiful place you live my friend :)
I had the same problem It's caused by the lense not being in the perfectly same plane as the camera lense. I experimented with it in web cam mode and figured it needed a little angle to it .sorted it after a lot of experimentation and refixing the metal ring different angle. check out my latest 'Video test - HD Key Cam 808 mini DV type 16# with V 18 firmware ' at 1m 24 secs you can see I have virtually elimated it. Fisheye test with 11# paragliding at Freathy has same probs
haha! i wish i had found your video sooner! i actually did the same to one cheap quadcopter camera and it works great!
I use my HD Key chain with the 0.67 glued on a lot. Although I now have a few action cameras that are better, 1080 60 fps. But all the same for model flying and quads, great. ua-cam.com/video/JQiSEl0Ju8M/v-deo.html
This is a good one too. ua-cam.com/video/RZw5sBwrodE/v-deo.html&feature=gp-n-y&google_comment_id=z13og3easszkgdimj23hh3xibni5vr24f04
That 1st video !Now thats some true FPV! awesome man! :D
@TheSliekaStyle Two sticky rings are supplied when you buy the lense.
Rabbit fur over the lense? You won't get any video? I've tried wrapping the whole camera (except lense) in fleece material, that works a bit. The mike is mounted behind the small hole in the front of the case, but the wind noise also comes from wind blowing in the usb hole and around the case.
Can't imagine why unless it's a defective lense. Is that a Deal Extreme fisheye? They are pretty good and mine has worked on all three or four key cams I've tried it on.
Mobius looks good I've seenit and the review. I know Techmoan (Matt) he has e mailed a question re the 26 HD cam!
@bobflyman do any of your videos show the glass tube you speak of? someone else suggested 'hot' gluing the lens to the ring as it's easier to remove than CA or epoxy
Thanks for the great video!
Quite possible. I had a similar problem with my latest video where the 0.67 wasn't at the right angle and was off centre. It almost produced a tilt shift effect. Check out the video
Scratching, Parawaiting and Paragliding. Labrador Bay, March 2012. HD Key Cam
Awesome video! Are they waterproof?
HI were did you get the lens?? i think i will hot glue my ring on because the epoxy would be hard or impossible to remove without damage to the lens ring! when you have to replace the battery inside the camera
Blue tack might leave a greasy residue on the lense, and they are very difficult to clean.
@Nriku8 I use DealExtreme Universal 13mm Wide-Angle/0.67X Macro Lens Attachment for Digital Cameras and Cell Phones 14953 and 15mm Detachable 180-Degree Wide Angle Fish Eye Lens for Cell Phones and Compact Digital Cameras 39814 For paragliding I have a small plastic bracket that fits in the chinguard of my full face helmet.
Shooting RC aerial footage, I'm using the 808 #16 with the 0.67x WA lens mounted with some goo at a small angle as I haven't done away with the excess casing curve.
I do get some blurring at the edges which is very unfortunate as the propeller destroys the center part of the image :-) Would you think this is due to the unaligned mounting?
@bobflyman OK angle of view of lenses as best as I could work out. Normal lense =
32 degs.... 0.67x wide angle= 60 degs... and fisheye = 92 degs. All give or take a couple of degs.
Should say that's the latest version of the 16 HD.key cam Check out RC Groups thread for details.
The new 16# version 2 with red lense is a bit wider. 0.67 wide is useful though.
There's info on this subject on the RC Groups thread linked in my description. There are various ways of charging while recording but some 1HD key cams need a special usb lead with different pin configuration.
A USB connection uses pins 1 and 4 to supply 5v power. Pin 1 is +5v and pin 4 is ground.
@alexinshade when you got your fish eye , how long did it take and how goo are they cuz i bought them yesterday :) please reply
Hi,
I cannot get the lens mounted (FE-12 fisheye, 15mm) without vignetting. I trimmed down the casing, added several rings, nothing seems to help. Do you have a clue what could be the cause? I tried also in webcam mode. There is always vignetting.
Matthias
@regelescorilo Could be a good idea if you found a pipe the right diameter I guess.
@justinspirational I made it really as an underwater housing, not very suitable for rc models (apart frpm big ones maybe.) I plan to use it suspended from my paraglider and it will prevent the lense from being dislodged when I launch. At 5 m 32 s in this video 'HD Key chain and 808 key chain mini dv on Orion glider and underwater housing
Are you removing the OEM lens before you put the fish-eye lens on?
Cool. Have fun mate.
@nztitirangi Actually that would give a very good surface I must say. I wouldn't use super glue though as when I used it on sun glasses once the vapours completely ruined the edge of the lense. I think it would completely f.ck the 808 camera lense. hence I use 5 min epoxy. That seems ok.
can these cameras be charged while in record mode. thinking of using on bike and charging off it as well. your thoughts kind sir. thanks. nz
I also had this problem. Don't know if the lens specs changed but I bought mine recently and it was also blurry with my 808 and other fixed focus cameras. This video fixed my problem: /watch?v=SLogA1a8vPE
Thanks for your video-I have the #11 camera and the deal extreme fish eye lens however you can see the edges of the fish eye legs in the corners of the video (see my snow boarding video on my channel)-will shaving away the top, like you did, help with this or anything else? Thank you
Too right - NO SUPER GLUE! Apart from the fact that fumes will likely destroy and fog the lense, the reason I said use two part epoxy is that it gives you 5 mins to manipulate and adjust the position of the ring. Super glue is almost instant. I fogged some sun glass lenses I was spot glueing around the frame so found out myself how bad the fumes are!
Everytime I put the fisheye lens on this camera or any other fixed focus camera it gets blurry. Is there any way to stop this?
If by OEM lense you mean the normal lense that's screwed into the camera module, NO! I doubt it would have the right focal length. Re the split ring idea, you need to be even more accurate with the ring to avoid vignetting with the fisheye. You can see vignetting on one of test vids with the fisheye.
Hey that's good news. Have fun!
You may have to slip and slide the ring to get best position and super glue is too quick to allow you to do this. 5 minute epoxy is better I think.
@meandjesus4ever never mind seen the lenses part numbers at the end of video THANKS
@MrSquishedsquashed Yes, I thought about doing that too. Good idea.
@bobflyman What type of washer is that? Thanks
@josephbilling No problem mate. Have fun.
@darkgilson when I get a hance I'll try and work it out.
Mine is on it's way as well! :]
I guessed that really mate!
Is it the 31 dollar one quite expensive
@clarebannerman Useful . Thanks. Have fun.
I just glue the ring to 1/2 the case so I can still open it in case I need to replace the battery.
OK considering price but nowhere near as good as DealExtreme lense ( 3 times the price) OK for messing about with on the SD key cams, or MD80 etc you can find less than £10. looking through my vids I found one with a jelly lense, an MD 80 with a jelly in a home made underwater housing videoing kayak rolling in a pool. Good for a setup that cost less than £15 and indoors. Google or look for this one 'MD80 mini dv cam - VERY cheap Underwater Housing - Eskimo Roll Practice ' cheers mate.
I'd put some epoxy on it, or a bit of tape. But if it's really bad you could try e mailing one of the two suppliers listed on RC Groups New #16 HD Key Cam thread and asking for a case? Google and you'll find the thread. Suppliers are in FAQ's page one.
Camera is Mini DVR 808 Car Key Chain Micro Camera #16 Real HD 720P H.264 Pocket Camcorder from eletoponline365 on E bay $38.99. Lenses are $10.37 or $16 .35. there are cheaper cameras around but the HD is best and around that price.
