As I get on in years (68) weight has moved progressively up the priority ladder of importance. Like you, I am a firm believer in an f/4 maximum aperture for landscape photography. I seem to be falling into this argument all the time on social media forums, but considering the high ISO performance of current sensor technology, and the fantastic De-noise software available, I see little reason to go for an f/2.8 lens (I do have an 14mm f/2.8 prime for astro). And, frankly, I rarely shoot wider than about f/8 anyway, so it's kind of a moot point! The other day I added up the weight of all the f/4 lenses in may bag and compared that to what similar f/2.8 lenses would weigh, and it amounted to about a six pound savings!

Wow that’s a ton when you consider hauling it on your back. I am always looking to save weight as well. It just makes the whole experience of outdoor photography more enjoyable I think.

This is a great starting point for anyone shooting landscapes, even when you’re experienced it suggests options you might have originally discarded.
Seeing you use lenses that aren’t at the “top end” and the amazing results you capture, just opens the eyes of anyone with a creative heart. Many thanks for that.
I love the Tamron 50-400. Was very close to buying the Sigma but it just popped it. I just wish they had more in the way of zoom lock. That would have taken it up several notches. I did look at the Sony 100-400 and if they upgrade it to a Mk2 and it’s lighter… lighter lenses are a high priority for me when hiking.

Interesting collections. I’m a Nikon shooter and, when COVID hit and my spend rate plummeted, I upgraded my D750 for a Z7ii. I’ve kept my 16-35 f4 and 20 f2.8 F mount lenses. When I bought the new camera, I splurged on the 24-70 f2.8 and love it. Recently, I sold my 200-500 to offset some of the cost of the new 100-400. Along the way, I also bought the new version of the 105 macro. It’s a lot to lug onto cross-country planes at age 78, but when I press the shutter, there are no excuses about either camera or lens performance.

I have Sony PZ 16-35, Tamron 28-200 and Tamron 50-400. And when I have to take pictures of the northern lights, Sony 20mm 1.8. What I use most are 16-35 and 28-200, fantastic to be able to carry so easily and get such good image quality.

Shaved more bulk and weight off my minimalist backpack kit by opting for the Samsung 18 2.8 (145g) rather than 16-35, (comes with hiking friendly case) as like you the 28-200 delivers so much especially with flip it into portrait mode and stitch a LR pano, or use a high res body for a 400mm APSC capability. 👍

For an L mount budget/travel kit, it's hard to go wrong with Lumix S 20-60 and 70-300 macro. Total cost (new) is about $1300. Yes, both are variable aperture, but f/3.5 at 20mm is reasonably fast. And while sharpness tails off as the telephoto gets close to 300mm, it's pretty solid from 70 to 230-240. I look at the extra reach as a bonus.

I think when I ran into you and we shot at Rodeo beach last November we talked about my Tamron 28-200mm. I don’t think you’d picked it up for yourself yet if I recall correctly. So glad to see that got it and you’re enjoying it. It’s a lens I recommend to almost everyone at this point. My kit is typically the Tamron 17-28mm
f/2.8, Tamron 28-200mm and I recently replaced my Sigma 100-400mm with the 50-400. Couldn’t resist that extra 50mm of zoom range. There’s so much versatility in that 3 lens setup for landscape photographers. Great video as usual! 🍻

The lenses I use the most are Tamron 50-400 and Sony 200-600. I do landscapes and birds. When I just want to bring a single lens (multi-day hiking, traveling) I bring my Tamron 28-200. Love that thing!

Considering the 50-400... or completely switching to the X-H2 and the XF 70-300 with TC lol. So many amazing options today. Great overview and suggestions, thanks!

Thank you. Nice presentation of five 2 to 3 lens kits. Been mostly an event, portrait, and sports shooter so I’ve favored heavier F/2.8 zooms and faster primes but for landscape I’m trying to go lighter. Have the Sony 24-105/4 G, and 100-400mm GM but really haven’t found an f/4 wide angle I like. Have a 16-35/2.8 GM II but looking for a lighter lens. Also just bought the Sony 70-200/4 MACRO G OSS II to go lighter out to 280mm with the 1.4X TC. Take care.

My favorite lens is Sony SEL18135 on a A6000. Versatile and low weight. For hiking you have a small equipment. In cases where I use the internal flashlight, I changed to 16-50mm kit lens. It's not super sharp, but there are no shadows from the lens on the picture.
Have a nice Sunday, Michael 😊.

Sony user here too, and still in the process of figuring out what lenses suit me. The lens I love using the most is also the most impractical, my 50 mm prime. If I ever feel uninspired this is the lens I put on to get me out of it. My second favorite is my 100-400, but I'm still in the process of learning how to use it without creating flat and uninteresting photos. Lastly is my 24-70, very practical, but not as fun to use. I've never enjoyed ultra wide angles, so that's why I don't own one. I also live in a rather flat area and have trouble imaging what I could even use it for. Interesting video!

I use mostly three lenses from OM System/Olympus on my OM System OM-1. The 12-40 f/2.8 and the 40-150 f/2.8 both constant aperture. With the 2x converter on the 40-150 I get the extended reach with very little additional weight. The other lens is the little but awesome 12mm f/2 which I use for astrophotography. Entire kit is much smaller and lighter than FF kits which I like for hiking and transporting on airplanes.

My current 3 lens kit for my d850 is the Nikon 16-35mm f4, tamron 35-150mm f2.8-4, Sigma 100-400mm. I’ve also got the tamron g2 15-30mm f2.8 for Astro and a tamron g2 150-600mm for wildlife. I’m pretty happy with it but it’s obviously heavy. For longer hikes I will take my d7500 with a 10-24mm tamron and my 100-400mm.

With you on the older f4 24/70. I’m using the Sony 16/35 f2.8, Sony 24/70 f4, Tamron 70/180 f2.8 and the Sigma 100/400. I own cheaper 1.4 Samyang 35mm and f1.8 85mm Viltrox that I use when I decide to be a model photographer. When I traded in my DSLR equipment to help pay for the Nikon Z7II, I noticed that I had rarely shot wider than 24mm with the DSLR so I got the Nikon 24-120 and the 100-400. Both lenses are weather-sealed S lenses and also focus quite close. I have an old Canon 500D close-up filter which turns the 100-400 zoom into a nearly 1X macro. Very versatile, tack sharp and relatively lightweight. The 100-400 was quite expensive but it also doubles as an outstanding macro lens with great working distance with the 500D. So nice to see an outstanding photographer tout less expensive, slower than f2.8 lenses!

My newest setup is the Sony G 20-70 f4 and the Sony 70-200 f2.8 GM II on the A7R V - covers nearly all my needs and I can add a x2 Teleconverter for extra reach and a 14mm 1.8 G Master for super wide angle shots if needed.

I have a Tamron 17-28, Sony 24-105, Sony 100-400, and a Sony 1.4 teleconverter (along with a Sony 90 macro which I take only if I plan a botanical gardens or equivalent visit). The 17-28 allows me to easily add filters, unlike wider lenses, and I can stitch pictures together when I need a wider shot.

Hello Michael, I exactly use the "budget" kit - 16-35 PZ plus Tamron 50-400. Had two copies of the 28-200, but wasn't satisfied with the sharpness and the color rendering. The 50-400, though, is a beast!

Thanks Michael. I use the Sony 24-70 2.8 as my main lens and also have the Sony 90mm macro. I used to have the Sony 16-35 2.8 but wasn't using it much so I traded it in for a Sigma 20mm 2.0 for astro shots and then added the Sony 100-400 plus a teleconverter so I can try to do more wildlife shooting. I need to try that Tamron 28-200 especially for travel photography and not having to change lenses while walking around. Then I may ditch the Sony 24-70.

  • @davidligon6088
    @davidligon6088 11 місяців тому

I also shoot Sony. I started with the 24-105, then wanted a wide lens. I tried three copies of the Sony-Zeiss 16-35 and returned them all because the corners were too soft for me. So I bit the bullet and bought the 16-35 GM, and I am glad I did. It is very sharp and so flexible for landscape, astro, and architecture. Next, I added the 100-400 GM, and I love it! So I carried the 16-35 GM, 24-105 G, and 100-400 setup for a while - an exceptional setup, but a bit too heavy for me. I then bought the Tamron 28-200 and I often pair it with the 16-35 GM and a A7RV for a lightweight carry in a small 7L Wotencraft shoulder bag. While I love that setup, the 28-200 often has too much purple fringing for me. Recently, I rented the new 20-70 for a trip to Death Valley and Joshua Tree, and fell in love with it. It is so sharp, and the contrast is superb. Do you hear DANGER? Yup! So, I’m in the process of reworking my setup. I got the 14mm f1.8 GM, the 20-70 f4 G. I am just waiting for availability of the 70-200 f4 Macro G II. I’ll carry the 20-70 and 70-200 for a lightweight setup and I’ll carry the 20-70 and a 1.4 TC with the 70-200, or 100-400 if I can tolerate a bit heavier carry. Of course the 200-600 is excellent when I am out shooting birds.

Switched a few months ago to Sony so still building my kit. My first lens was the Tamron 28-200. Really good and versatile. I love it. Also have the sony 100-400 and the Sony 20mm 1.8G. I thought I would be set with that kit. But after a recent trip to the Yellowstone area, I want something wider than 20. Also looking for a portrait lens. The Sony 85mm 1.8 currently discounted on Amazon UK is extremely good value. Undecided between that one and obviously the Sigma 85 1.4.

This is an interesting post, Michael. I’m a Nikon shooter and my landscape kit is the Z7 with L-bracket, 14-30mm f4, 24-120mm f4 and 100-40mm f4.5-5.6. Like you, I don’t feel the need for faster glass for most landscape work. If so, I have small, fast primes like the 40mm f2 or 20mm f1.8.

Olympus E-M1 Mark III (or better) paired with an Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro is probably the dream landscape travel setup; handheld you can get high res mode photos up to 50mp or 80mp on a tripod. With this combo, some people get up to 10 second long exposures HAND HELD, but 2+ seconds are fairly easy as well. In-body focus stacking works, Live ND filters work as well... this is easily a "holy grail" travel setup.

I had the 24-105 but it just wasn't performing as well as the 24-70 2.8 I rented so I sold it and got the Sony. Have you ever used teleconverters? Agree on all the points in figuring out which lenses to choose. And yes, weight is such a big factor -- I was spoiled when using only iPhone, but when I really needed quality and the ability to zoom, decided to go back to mirrorless... and my back doesn't like it, lol. I know this is irrelevant, but trying to figure out where that vantage point is at 3:04 -- Is it the SCA Trail, or further north? I've never seen that view before, and would love to visit someday.

@MichaelShainblum , your videos are just so inspiring for me, thank you so much for your work! Let me ask you a question: I'm in the Sony APSC e-mout ecosystem since 2012 with the original NEX3. I started with the 16mm f2.8 and I think four years later I bought the 55-210 f4.5 to f6.3. I think I've pushed the camera to it's limits, and, last year I thought it was time to upgrade. So I bought an ZVE-10 (which is basically what you can get here in Brazil), a Viltrox 23mm F1.4, a Sony 70-350 G, and I'm waiting my Tanrom 17-70 F2.8 to arrive. Later this year or next year I will look for an ultrawide option... For now, I'm thinking about the viltrox 13mm F1.4 or the sigma/Tamron 10-18mm f2.8 ... Which one would you buy? (Astro is my main reason to look for an ultrawide)

This video came at an interesting time. I’ve been doing a ton of research trying to decide what to get for my first setup. I’ll be purchasing an A7RV in the near future. I was considering the 12-24 2.8 and the 100-400. I talked myself out of the 12-24 for a more versatile and cheaper 16-35 2.8 but I’m still concerned about the gap in between. I have a trip to Glacier planned and want the wide angle for the grand vistas and the telephoto to keep from getting trampled by moose and disemboweled by grizzlies.

Great options. My current set: Sony 16-35mm F2.8, Tamron 28-75 F2.8, Sony 70-300mm F4.5-5.6. Sony 14mm F1.8. I started out with the 16-35mm F4, really glad I upgraded to the F2.8. Sharper, better in the corners, better at night. Mid range: Started out with the budget Sony 28-70 F3.5, had a focus problem especially in cold weather. Upgraded to the faster Tamron 28-70 F2.8. It also has a problem where it shuts down for no apparent reason ! Also has distortion, vignetting issues. Not a fan but I don't use it much. Sony 70-300mm F4.0-5.6: Like the extended range, not the best optics, a budget lens. The 14mm was a guilty pleasure buy. Great at night and in tight spots. If I had it to do over: Sony 16-35mm F2.8, Maybe the Tamron 28-200, and I would probably upgrade to the Sony 100-400mm GM F 4.5-5.6.

    - Sony 16-35mm F2.8 GM lens
    - Sony 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM lens
Covers all my needs and the focal gap in-between is covered by just cropping the image from 35mm... One of the benefits of a high MP camera I suppose... :)

Thx for your perspective. I use this combo right now: Sony a7IV with Viltrox 16mm f1.8 ( it’s really good lens for the price in my opinion but I’m always missing the opportunity to zoom little bit) + Sigma 24-70 f2.8 art (my favourite lens so far, just extraordinarily) + Tamron 150-500 f5-6.7 (It was a panic buy before trip to Alaska which didn’t happen.. I live in Jasper, AB so I use it for wildlife but I would prefer Tamron 50-400 no doubt right now as I’m mostly landscape guy. I miss important focal length with it). Overall setup for everything I would say. 🙂

    Nikkor Z14-30mm f4
    Nikkor Z 24-70mm 2.8
    Nikkor Z 100-400mm 4.5 to 5.6
For Aviation shoots and wildlife, I put on the 1.4X teleconverter. I never liked teleconverters before, but on the mirrorless system the 1.4 gives me nice sharp images. I have pre-ordered the 180-600mm for long lens work

I use the Tamron 15-30 f/2.8, RF 24-105 f/4, and RF 100-400 f/5.6-f/8 on an EOS R. I'm somewhat happy with them, the Tamron is really good and their support was really great! I had to adapt the 15-30 to the R and it didn't get recognized by the camera. It's not the version with the dock but it was possible to update the firmware by sending it in to Tamron, their turnaround time was excellent! I've also tried the RF 24-200, I kind of liked it because of the range, but found the sharpness lascking enough to look elswhere. I miss the EF 70-200 f/4 I used to own because it was so sharp! the good thing is it's a cheap lens and I could just buy it again someday. I'd like to update my camera body because I'm having fun taking pictures of birds and would love the eye tracking of the new canon cameras OR would really like to try a Nikon Z 6 with the 20mm f/1.8 for astro. I've found that for astro landscape I like longer focal lengths like 30-50mm or to crop in a bit these days.

I think us Nikon Z shooters can anticipate that Tamron 28-200/2.8-5.6 in the near-ish future. Bc while Nikon does have the 24-200, there's no overlap on the apertures, so Nikon might be generous & allow Tamron to produce that lens OR nikon will produce it like they did w/the Tamron 17-28|28-75|70-180.
For myself, my "dream/perfect" mid-range ultra zoom is the Tamron 35-150/2-2.8 & and excitingly, it's on its way to Z-mount 🙌🏾
I think the days of the traditional 24-70/2.8 or 4 are long gone thanks to these unique FL zooms that Sigma & Tamron are coming out with.
My "perfect" kit would be: Z 14-30/4, Z 35-150/2-2.8, Z 100-400 ~~ peppered in with some primes for Astro/Portrait/Macro work.
I hear wonderful things abt the Tamron 50-400, but just like you, as I own a 100-400, it doesn't make much sense to get it. I am currently looking at the Sigma 60-600, specifically for the 500-600mm side of it.
For different hikes/backpacking/wildlife shoots, that would be a great zoom to take & leave the 100-400 at home.

Heading to Iceland next week and plan on taking 3 of those 5 lens and my drone. Would be to much weight to take them all. I am a bit of a dinosaur and feel more comfortable with primes, as that is what I cut my teeth on in the 70s. I now have a collection of Loxias and Voigtlanders. However, when backpacking I do have the 24-105 and the Loxia 21 to go with my A7RIII. As I approach 70 and still intend to keep backpacking/wilderness landscape photography, I need to make my kit lighter, so hoping the A7C II gets the 33 MP. sensor. That plus the Tamron you feature (+ 21 Lox) could be my new backpacking kit, while keeping the heavier stuff for shorter outings.

Not a Sony user, but Sony has the best lens lineup in addition to allowing third party lenses. However, the new Sony 70-200 f4 looks amazing, not only for landscape but closeup photography. I am currently using Canon 6D and variety of lenses, but slowly switching to Nikon Z 7II as I do mostly landscape and that is a good value plus I really like the lens selection. Not a huge selection, but they have what I am preferring. Your suggestions on several different kits is excellent, ignored by others who have suggested kits.I assume your kit varies by location and that would be interesting to incorporate in a future video. Driving up to a vista, a photographers kit weight does not matter. But it should would if hiking to some mountain overlook, carrying gear up several miles and a few thousand feet.

For Bald Cypress water forests (what I mostly shoot) I use the RF 14-35L, RF 24-240 and sometimes bring the EF 100-400L II with extenders. Previously I used the EF 17-40L and EF 28-300L.
The RF 14-35L is a pure joy to use, especially when compared with the EF 17-40L. The RF 24-240 is every bit as good as the EF 28-300L, which is an amazing lens. The RF 24-240 so much lighter and a lot less expensive than the EF 28-300L. I have the RF 24-105L, which is a great lens but the RF 24-240 is so much more versatile that I only use the RF 24-105L if I need f/4. I really can't tell the difference in image quality between the RF 24-240 and the RF 24-105L. 105 mm is fine on an APS-c but not long enough for me on full frame.

  •  11 місяців тому

Thank You for the vídeo. Your comment is very good. Because many don't think about weight.
I have been a professional photographer for many years and am currently transitioning from Nikon to Panasonic Lumix. But I bought an adapter to fit my nikon lenses to panasonic. The problem is that I like the primes. 20mm, 50mm, 105mm, 85mm and a 70-300. But since everything is changing because I'm 55, I'm changing the kit. The problem with the 16-35mm is that I would trade it for an 18 f1.8 Lumix. So it would be: 18mm f1.8, 24-105mm f4, and the 100-400 Sigma (it has an L mount) but on my long hikes only the 18 and the 24-105. The weight issue has been really, really important to me. regards from Brasil.
    My expensive kit would be:
    18mm f1.8, 35mm f1.8 , 25-105 f4; 70-200 f4; and sigma 100-400

I'd love to see Canon upgrade their current RF superzoom (24-240) to one that is weather sealed and has an AF/MF switch on the barrel - an upgrade to their current offering; perhaps an L? That way I can do a lot of exploring with a sturdy sealed lens without carrying all that other gear.
