I too, love my 24-120. Its a great focal range, yet not too big/heavy. I recently got the 180-600, and it is a world unto it's own. It's been a great year. Thanks Nigel.
Indeed, I also have the 24-120 and the 180-600 both are extraordinary I quality and character at there price point. I can't lugg the 180-600 everywhere so have some 1.8 primes and will add the 14-24 2.8, the f4 isn't quite where I want to be and the 2.8 is great wide open goes astro landscapes too. I need something not too heavy for a short telephoto up to 300mm, I'm using an f mount af-p 70-300mm which is pretty good, cheap and light, but not quite up there with the other lenses.
I love an EOY review type video. You’re not the only Nikon landscape photographer that rates the 24-120, if I were to go back to Nikon, I reckon that would be the lens I would buy first. I hope the back continues to improve in 2024 and good luck with your exciting projects.
I would like to say a big thanks for all your input over the last 12mths, your videos have all been wonderful and so helpful. As a fellow back sufferer I appreciate what you go through so congrtulations for what you have achived. Looking forward to next year and lets hope it's a good one . Happy New Year Nigel. (and to Pebbles).
I switched my Sony system to Nikon this year because the Nikon Zf. Nikkor Z 24-120 S is also my fav lens. I hope u get more and more great photos next year and enjoy ur photography! I love ur videos and photos and I will continue to follow your photographic journey! Happy New Year!
Another great video. I got the 24-120 when I bought the Z8 kit. Now have the 14-30 and 100-400. Can’t say enough how versatile the 24-120 is and agree with your review
@dabian3115 I own the 14-30 f4 (as well as the 24-120), and I don't like it nearly as much as the 24-120 personally. I feel that at 14mm all the way to about 19mm is a little softish and a little distorted (especially at 14mm). I also own the 20mm f1.8 so I tend to use that if I need wider than the 24mm of the 24-120. Hope this helps some.
I’m working on getting my knees better. It’s so discouraging when you can get where you want to go to take photos. And is feels so good when you begin to see the improvement! Best of luck getting your back healed and where you want it, and Happy New Year. Keep up the good work!
Nice video. A surprising final ranking but totally understandable. I’ve shot with primes for the last twenty years but now I’m getting older, and zooms are so good now, I’m going get a zoom or two. Understanding how you use your lenses really helps to focus my choices. I’m on FE mount but there are equivalent lenses. Happy New Year to you, your family and of course Pebbles.
Very well done and couldn't agree more with your picks and reasons, bravo. This will be a great reference video for many Nikon Z user's! I love the 70-200mm and 24-70mm f/2.8 S lenses, but I too would rather have the 24-120mm and 100-400mm instead. Now since I do a lot of wildlife and sports and even aviation..I need an excellent super-tele option and that is the Nikon 500mm f/4E FL. It's the sharpest lens I've ever used, although the 800mm f/5.6E VR FL might be a tad sharper, but it's too heavy and usually too long and plus the 800mm is often too long. I had the 800mm f/5.6E FL and the 400mm f/2.8E FL, and I sold both as both were just a tad too big and too long. When I was younger I would carry two super-tele's to big events or sports events, usually a 400mm f/2.8 and 200-400mm f/4 VR/VRII or 200mm f/2G VRII. I've since sold most of these lenses, except I switched to the 500mm FL because it's only about 6.7lbs or 3kilos. I have always had great hand strength and upper body strength and I can literally handhold my 500mm f/4 for hours. I've shot entire day long airshows, MLB baseball games, concerts and other events where I handheld my 500mm for hours. However I do like saving weight and the 24-120mm f/4 S is such an incredible lens, that I sold my 24-70mm f/2.8 VR and 70-200mm for the 24-120mm and 100-400mm. My 500mm FL with 1.4x TC-14E III gives me an amazing 700mm f/5.6 with barely any IQ loss and it's still fast and accurate in any light, but especially in good light! Now I only have two F-mount lenses and neither has been replaced and even if they were given a new upgrade to mirrorless I don't think Nikon could make them any better optically. The two lenses are the Nikon F-mount 28mm f/1.4E and 500mm f/4E FL. If you look at the MTF and Imatest data, you'll see both are off the charts sharp and few Z-lenses can even match their quality. So I am thankful that I get to get another 5 years or so out of my F-mount lenses and not need to worry about them, as they are near optical perfection.
I got the 24-70 2.8 S. As it is incredibly sharp, versatile and a great size. I don't plan on buying primes except my 105 macro. I use the 24-70 2.8 S for a variety of subjects and the 2.8 is helpful in that way.
Thanks for another interesting video! It’s so awesome to get up on Sunday mornings and have a fresh video of yours to watch with my breakfast! It’s become a ritual! Loved the closing video and I’m not surprised that you are nearing 500,000 subscribers! Thanks for taking me along!
Hi Nigel, I just wanted to say thank you for your weekly videos. I'm a relatively new subscriber to the channel having discovered it last year and at the foothills of my photography journey. Together with James, Mads and Henry I think I have learn't a lot from you but most importantly you have inspired me to get out there and take photos! I have a trip to Norway to see the Northern Lights in March which I'm very excited about and hoping that I can use all that I have learnt from your channel to get some amazing shots. Wishing you a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2024. Keep up the great work! Lee
Happy new year Nigel , it was a joy to meet you on Madeira. The 24-120 is my most used lens and I love it, then comes the 100-400 and the 14-24 Best wishes for 2024 and thanks for all the superb content
Very interesting results Nigel. The 24-120 and 100-400 are the only lenses I own. Love them both! Having very few "grand landscape" options where I live, I take a lot of intimate/telephoto landscapes and macros, so the 100-400 is my most used lens. Really like the close-focusing abilities of both lenses. Wishing your family a safe, happy and healthy New Year including the Head of Household (Pebbles!)
Great Video Nigel. Thank you. I am not surprised that 24-120 ranked number one as most of the videos I have seen from you feature that lens. Happy New Year.
Happy New Year Nigel. I got the 24-120 Z8 kit and really enjoy using the lens. For landscapes I generally use my used 24mm PC-E lens, with the 45mm and 85mm. I get obsessed with verticals!
Wow Nigel, you add more to my life than you could guess with these videos. Love your passion for photography and adventure. Photographers like you and Morten Hilmer remind me to stop and smell the roses, and to make sure I have my camera in my hands. Cheers!
Thanks Nigel for all the videos this year, I watch them with interest, I also have the 24-120, and like you most of my photos are taken with this lens, it's great! All the best for the new year
Good to see your two most versatile lenses are the two I have for my Z6ii. It's about and hour and a half till new year here in Oz. Looking forward to putting your calendar up on the wall.
Almost every Sunday I get up early with a cup of hot coffee and a new landscape video from St. Nigel of Nikon. Thanks for the journey in 2023, and best wishes for the New Year!
Really enjoyed the video Nigel. I’ve recently done a similar exercise as I have been working on my favorite 100 images from my first 50 years of photography. The shock for me was how often my F-mount 105mm macro turned-up and as a result, the Z 105 is on my wish list. Thanks for continuing to produce fun, informative, and inspiring videos.
All the very best for 2024, Nigel 🎉 THIS video probably ranks as one of the most useful takes of real-world usage. The options are numerous and spec-hype is strong. The fact that the two “darlings” (70-200/2.8 and 24-70/2.8) are in that corner speaks volumes to usability over numbers on paper. Granted, this is from the perspective of Landscape imaging. Maybe Wildlife shooters will have a different take, but this is the kind of reality-check we all need to break the fog of tech-specs and lab tests. KUDOS mate!
So glad to hear that back is on the mend! Your videos this year have been amazing, I always recommend your channel to friends in need of good instruction and great content. Looking forward to seeing what you have in 2024.
I love how you explained that, full of personal opinion and experience. I was surprised by your best to worst list but totally made sense for your type of photography and priorities. Great video as always. I hope that you have a Happy New Year!
thanks for all the videos, Nigel :) Always interesting watching photographers talk about their favourite / most used lenses - I'm a manual focus primes kind of person and mostly use a Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 and old Tokina 90mm f2.5. Might finally be time to pick up a super wide and 100-400 zoom for some versatility in 2024 though, I think! Best of luck with your projects in the new year, and to your back healing up nicely!
Nigel - thank you for the video and thank you for your enthusiasm and great spirit. I wish you the VERY best New Year and continued improvements to your back. Take care and best wishes - Richard
As ever, great update and good to see my choices have been good. Looking at 180-600 to replace my older 200-500 and be interested to see your take on that lens in the future. Happy New Year 👍👏
Good fun and very interesting Nigel. I love my 24-120 …and 600PF for wildlife. Only one I don’t agree with is 24-200…I sold mine as too soft. You’ve tempted me with the 100-400 though!!
Much of my photography is at night or in low light. I find myself gravitating towards the faster lenses. That lineup order you selected makes perfect sense for daylight landscape photography. It’s an impressive collection of lenses! Thank you for your posts. Nigel, your videos helped me fall in love with the Nikon Z system. You inspire us!
Loved this video Nigel. Succinct and well supported with the images you have taken with each lens. Thank you for another wonderful year of sharing your passion and promoting our growth as photographers. Shane
As others have said, the final ranking was a little surprising... but it makes sense. I've wanted the 100-400 for quite a while, but it's been hard to justify since I have the 70-200 + TC 2.0. The 24-120, though, is compelling... especially as a travel lens. Thanks for all the great content, Nigel, and have a Happy New Year!
...And thank you Nigel for your awesome channel! I'm not a landscape photographer but I love your work and your videos (and Nikon) Keep up the great work and Happy New Year to you!
I always find it interesting to listen to comparisons like this. To me it points out what is really useful on the regular use of camera gear. I appreciate all your great content. Best of the New Year!
Great video. And what a fantastic selection you have Nigel! I’m a little more reportage in my style so tend to switch between the 24-70 2.8, the 50 1.2 and the 100-400 lenses - sadly, my 14-24 never gets a look in. Just as well as my back wouldn’t thank me for it. Never bothered getting the 70-200 because the 100-400 performs so well.
An excellent video to finish the year Nigel, Have a Happy and Healthy amazing 2024, and long may your video's continue. It's been a real pleasure to follow your channel and social media - very inspirational and informative. Thank You
I'm a family portrait photographer shooting large groups and i mean a lot and the 24-120 handles everything as I shoot at f4 for most of the shoot to keep all in focus. Would love to have the option for 2.8 for the couples but I can't tell ya how many times I've screwed up and forgot to go back to f4 and had a soft focus on the back row in the past. Great lens at f4 if its the aperture range you find most of your work in. Put the lens to 120mm at f4 if you have enough room to get back and you will get enough background separation for families.
This is good to know. I’m a portrait and headshot photographer and I occasionally do family sessions. I am saving for a Z6II (I know it’s an oldie, but a goodie) and I can get a kit w/ 24-70 or 24-120. I also do families and portraits so maybe the 24-120 is best. Would you recommend it? Is it heavy?
An interesting take on the lenses, we all have our favourites, I did a check on Lightroom and it came as a bit of a shock that my most used lens was the 24 to 200, when I expectried it to be my 14 to 30. Keep up the good work in 2023 and keep away from the ski slopes. Happy New Year.
Thanks for your insight to the multiple lenses! I just own a 24-70 but a lot of times I need a further reach, so I’ve been looking at others. Happy New Year to you, your family and Pebbles!
I love that lens too! It has this intangible quality in addition to being such a versatile focal length. Took a lot of my favorite shots with it before switching to Nikon.
Excellent overview of the lenses Nigel. It is so hard to choose between Z lenses these days, they are all fantastic to shoot with. I love my 24-70 f2.8 but it has ended up at home for most occasions. The 24-200 is an absolute treat for hiking and a very good surprise. I do not own the 24-120 but I am nearly sold on that one too. Really hard choice. Thanks for all the lovely information you have shared with us all these years and a very Happy New Year to you and your family!!!
Whilst it was a bit of fun, I was surprised how high up in the rankings the 24-200 was. Happy New Year and looking forward to hearing more about your camper van.
Nigel, thank you for all your videos this past year! I thoroughly enjoyed them and learned so much! Happy New Year and I look forward to all your videos in 2024!
Fantastic video, the comparison based on actual use is super useful. But all the fotos taken with any lens are super impressive. Watching you browse casually through your collection - one foto more beautiful than the other - is an unexpected bonus of this video. The ranking is surprising but credible based on your output!
Nigel!!! thank you for all the videos, I think I saw them all!!! may you and your love ones have a great 2024! and I am looking forward to learning a lot from you! Cheers from Mexico!
Great video as always! Planning to change from fuji gfx to nikon now and your videos is definitely one of the reason why! Gonna start with the 24-120mm for sure.
Thanks for all your inspirational videos. I use the 16_50 and 50_250, came with the kit for the z50. All the best for 2024, looking forward to your videos
Thanks for sharing your choice of lenses you have been a great inspiration to me as I am just starting out. I have bought a Z30 to take pictures as I retire next year and will be traveling all around New Zealand in my converted bus. I am going to get the 28mm f2.8 (42mm) for everyday carry around and when I can afford it the next one on my list will be the Sigma 16mm for landscape and woodland. After learning with the Z30 after a couple of years I will upgrade to the Z50 with the viewfinder. Thanks again I hope 2024 will be a good year for you no more back trouble.
I do look forward to 9am every Sunday!!! Great vid as usual and as I am undecided about swapping my Fuji gear to go FF, it is vids like yours that help in the process. Your views about your lenses are such a help given your experience with them and I may well take the plunge and go for a full frame system. Thanks for another very watchable vid and look forward to your channel next year. Happy New Year
This is my first time to leave a comment on the video after subscribing your channel. Even though I live in a different country and speak a different language, so sometimes misunderstand your language, Always get inspired by your videos. I can learn a lot and try to follow your photo skill. Thank you for your another lovely video and Happy New Year! Now, I'm gonna pack my gear -not having 24-120 though- and be ready before the sun goes up. 😊😊
Great video Nigel thanks for all the great tips you have given this year and the beautiful photos looking forward to your 2024 videos happy new year to you
Happy New Year Nigel. I hope 2024 is more productive than 2023 and that you realize all your photographic goals. I just switched to mirrorless and have the 24-70mm f4 that goes with the Nikon Z6ii. So my new goal for 2024 is to buy the new lenses that I need for my photography. 😃
I’m so happy that I bought 24-120 very recently! And I’m already in love with it. So versatile and man, such a change from the F lens! I’m pretty shocked 😅 Happy New Year Nigel and all the best for you ☺️
I just picked up a 24-120 f/4 before Christmas and I am seeing why you feel that it is a great kit lens. It is pretty sharp all the way through and I haven't found the f/4 too limiting so far. Not quite enough for live music and astro, but I can find something to fit that use later, like an f-mount 24-70. Loving my mirrorless Nikon and your advice and suggestions have never let me down.
Great presentation! I have 24-70/2.8, 24-120, 24-200, 100-400 and use them on my Z6II. My next lens will probably be the 17-28/2.8. But first I’m trying to save money for the Z8. I want to have a 45MP camera! Thanks for your great job, as always. Greetings from Germany Stephan.
I have only two Z lenses but one of them is the 24-120mm and I can say that it's great and I'm also looking forward to see that out of the many lenses you have, the 24-120mm is also your favourite. Thank you for the great videos you make and I look forward to more. I wish you all the best for the new year.
I have the same experience. The lens I most use on my Sony A77II is the Sony DT 16-80mm F3.4-4.5 Carl Zeiss. This is also 24-120mm equivalent. It is on the camera 80% of the time, and my general walk around lens.
Thanks for sharing Nigel. I (re-)started last week in the Nikon Z system with a used Z5, after 6 years of absence in the Fuji X system. Well, I still love my Fuji system and I will definitely continue to use it in the near future. At the Z5 I have adapted some older F-lenses that are still left over from the time before I switched to Fuji, with the FTZ-Adapter. But I quickly realized that I have to look out for at least one native Z lens to get the full potential of this camera, although the Z5 is not comparable with the Z7/Z8. So this episode is extremely valuable for me in the realization that the "holy trinity" is nice to have but not absolutely necessary. I think it will be the 24-120 F4 as well and if sufficient pocket money is available some day the 100-400 will be a good choice.
Great end of year roundup video. Back in the film days the lens I used most on SLR was 24-85mm. Favourite rangefinder was the 45mm lens on an old Yashica GTN. With the APS-C digitals it was 18-135mm not least because it became so easy to stitch landscapes. With Fuji bridge cameras 18-300 equivalent was perfect. If I ever go back to full frame (dependent on ability to walk rough terrain again) it will almost certainly be 24-120 as you have found.
"Hi Nigel, thank you immensely for the insightful and valuable video! It's clear that all the lenses you showcased are of high quality and perform exceptionally well. I appreciate that your ranking is grounded in your personal experience, which I found thoroughly enjoyable and informative.
Very entertaining and insightful. Similar experience here, convenience and enjoyment beats ultimate image quality. And the older I get, the less I want (and honestly feel don't need) to carry 🙂. Happy and healthy 2024 !!!
Great video Nigel, hopefully when I've saved enough funds the 24-120mm f4 lens will be my next purchase. I'm sure my Z6 will be fine with this lens, the Nikon Z8 camera is way out of my league.👍
interesting video nigel, I'm a Nikon user and I agree with your choice of best lens is the 24-120 it is the lens that is almost always on my Nikon z7 mk2, I have enjoyed following your channel this year, keep up the good work into next year, thanks for shearing.
Great video. Curious how many favourite photos from the 24-120mm are taken over 70mm. I have the Z24-70 f4 and F70-200f4 and pondering the Z24-120mm vs maybe the Z70-180mm. Great idea to look at what focal lengths are used the most in one’s photo archives.
All the best to you in 2024 Nigel and many thanks for sharing your adventures during 2023. I'm looking to add a new lens to my kit this year. I've got 15 to 200 mm covered. So many choices! Cheers.
Great video! I'll tell ya a surprise to me is that I bought the 150mm macro prime because I wanted to start trying macro and I have found it is a fantastic landscape lens as well. Yes you have to zoom with your feet but damn that lens produces some nice photos. Close and far.
Great work Nigel! I’m primarily a travel photographer so portability is key for me. I’m using the 14-30F4, 24-70F4 and a Tamron F mount 70-210F4. The tele is just massive with the F to Z adapter. I’ve been dying for 70-200F4 Z lens. What are your thoughts on the 70-180 F4 nikkor that just released? Too short? Sharpness? Thanks and happy new year!
Nice to see 2 of my lenses in your top 3 :) The 24-120 is the first lens I've ever bought that wasn't used...I tried to hold out, but nobody wants to sell that lens it seems. Least not 'round here. Totally worth the money tho!
This explains why I love my 24-200mm so much. Not a pro, like you, but an enthusiast that shoots every day. Happy New Year!

@@WOLFTICKVIDEOSReally appreciated your sharing!
Thanks, Nigel. I’m trending with my Z 24-70mm f/4 right now. It is an easy “walking around” lens. Have a great year!
Me too,love it,don’t longer,and it’s a great weight and size.
I’m working on getting my knees better. It’s so discouraging when you can get where you want to go to take photos. And is feels so good when you begin to see the improvement! Best of luck getting your back healed and where you want it, and Happy New Year. Keep up the good work!

I really loved your small overview of 2023 footage at the end! Looking forward to hear about your new campervan adventure! Happy New Year!
Thanks Nigel I have truly enjoyed your videos throughout the year. Especially the one of 30 days on the beach. Happy New Year to you and your family
KUDOS mate!
love my 24-120 - it's spot welded to my Z6ii. Now I just need to learn to take woodland shots like yours!! Happy new year Nigel.
I wholeheartedly agree on the 24-120mm f/4. The very best lens I've owned and definitely my favorite. Happy new year Nigel !
Happy new year Nigel, always love your videos, I learn so much from them.
Lovely to see the 2023 recap at the end.
thanks for all the videos, Nigel :) Always interesting watching photographers talk about their favourite / most used lenses - I'm a manual focus primes kind of person and mostly use a Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 and old Tokina 90mm f2.5. Might finally be time to pick up a super wide and 100-400 zoom for some versatility in 2024 though, I think! Best of luck with your projects in the new year, and to your back healing up nicely!
Nigel, thank you for taking us on your amazing journeys. Wish you a happy and healthy new year and many more amazing photography adventures.
Shane
Thank you for being inspiration for the past couple of years Nigel, have a blessed New Year 🙏
A very Happy New Year Nigel. Thanks for your enthusiasm and fantastic shots from ‘23. All the best for ‘24. 🍷
Thanks for a great year of adventures, instruction, and, of course, beautiful images. Glad you’re on the mend. Happy New Year!
What a belting year, packed so much in and been an excellent watch throughout, Thank you! All the best for 2024, im looking forward to it...
I'm having the same dilemma, but I do have the 24-120 which is on my camera most of the time
...And thank you Nigel for your awesome channel!
24-120mm is the only lens I own (12-60mm Panasonic Lumix M4/3), which covers 90% of my needs ...Best wishes for 2024 Nigel!
Likewise, it's actually really versatile and good image quality.
I have the 24-120 f4, love it. Also 14-30 f4, which needs fixing after my z6 fell over 😢😢😢.
Wish you a happy new year
Happy New Year Nigel, thanks for another great year of wisdom and inspiration
Whilst it was a bit of fun, I was surprised how high up in the rankings the 24-200 was. Happy New Year and looking forward to hearing more about your camper van.
Nigel, thank you for all your videos this past year! I thoroughly enjoyed them and learned so much! Happy New Year and I look forward to all your videos in 2024!
Happy New Year Nigel and thanks for another year of some fantastic content. Hoping you reach 500K in no time!!
Fantastic video, the comparison based on actual use is super useful. But all the fotos taken with any lens are super impressive. Watching you browse casually through your collection - one foto more beautiful than the other - is an unexpected bonus of this video. The ranking is surprising but credible based on your output!
Happy New Year and good to hear your back's feeling better.
Really liked the montage you put together at the end of the video. You had an amazing year.
Thank YOU for this year! It's been so much fun watching along.
Nigel!!! thank you for all the videos, I think I saw them all!!! may you and your love ones have a great 2024! and I am looking forward to learning a lot from you! Cheers from Mexico!
Great video as always! Planning to change from fuji gfx to nikon now and your videos is definitely one of the reason why! Gonna start with the 24-120mm for sure.
Thank you for all you shared this year, Nigel. Most enjoyable and educational. Have a Happy New Year. Good health to you as well. Cheers!
All best wishes for the new year to you and yours Nigel. Thanks for the many inspirational videos!
Great video Nigel thanks for all the great tips you have given this year and the beautiful photos looking forward to your 2024 videos happy new year to you
All the best for 2024 Nigel .... and hope to see you sometime , somewhere out and about on my travels next year. Glad to hear the back is better !
I’m pretty shocked 😅 Happy New Year Nigel and all the best for you ☺️
Thanks for the review. Wish you a great moments ahead, Nigel.
I love my 24-120 as well. Thanks for the video Sir, and Happy New Year!
Happy New Year Nigel! Wishing you a good health and determination for what you are doing.
Greetings from Germany
Stephan.
Fun video, happy New Years! Glad you’re back to your old self after the surgery and recovery.
Happy and Healthy New Year Nigel. I agree the z 24-120 f4 is an amazing lens.
Thank you for all the work you do.
I have only two Z lenses but one of them is the 24-120mm and I can say that it's great and I'm also looking forward to see that out of the many lenses you have, the 24-120mm is also your favourite. Thank you for the great videos you make and I look forward to more. I wish you all the best for the new year.
Thanks again Nigel, always inspiring. Have a fantastic new year.
That was really a fun one 😆 Thanks for going thru the pain of it for our own enjoyment ! A Very Happy Creative New Year to you Nigel 🙌
Thanks Nigel for all your 2023 videos! I bought 3 Sigma Lenses and a Tokina from MPB because of your referrals! Thank you!
Cheers.
Great vid. Ditto on 24-120. Love mine. MOST interesting is total lack of primes!? HNY from Cape Town Nigel.
Fabulous I only have the 24-200 and 100-400 is my latest addition, which I’m loving. This is helpful if I decide to get a wide angle lens
Your photos are amazing, so much inspiring! I subscribed and look forward seeing your video!
Nice video, thanks for sharing, there are not a ton of videos like these...
Cheers Nigel, thanks for all your video's this year, for taken us around some amazing places, all the best for 2024 !
Nice to see 2 of my lenses in your top 3 :) The 24-120 is the first lens I've ever bought that wasn't used...I tried to hold out, but nobody wants to sell that lens it seems. Least not 'round here. Totally worth the money tho!
Manny thanks to all your terrific videos during the ending ywr. Please keep on holding all that high niveau.
