    You are the best thing that ever happened to Edmunds my friend. At first I thought this would be a disaster, but you knocked it out the park with all your cuteness, charm, and actual details about the car. I hate when people review cars and cry about what it’s not. Just review the car for what it is. And that is what you did. Bravo.
    The Corolla hatch isn’t perfect. But countless reviews have shown me that this car does a lot of things right. It’s shaping up to be a solid little car.

      Toyota is one of the very few in this segment that uses both direct injection and port injection. What this does is keep the intake valves clean Many other manufactures are having problems with this. Honda is getting fuel in the oil on it's 1.5l turbo

    • @hellcatdave1
      @hellcatdave1 5 років тому

      @@bobdylan9117 Turbochargers don't really affect reliability at all- unless the turbo is garbage, or the car is being pushed to its limits...actually, turbos are beneficial.

    • @bobdylan9117
      @bobdylan9117 5 років тому +9

      @@hellcatdave1 well, you have a much more complicated mess under the hood which means more things to break and have to work right. You have the extra wear on the oil and the internals of the engine(customer will have to be religious about maintenance), the extra hoses for the intake plumbing will need to be replaced at a costly amount(because they different sizing on each end and extra ports on them), more sensors and complicated sensors because of the flip-flopping vacuum to pressure, yes and you said it, the actual turbo which will likely fail before the engine and be expensive. I guess these are some of the reasons that the reliability studies show much worse for turbo cars than N/A and also why Toyota is slow to adopt because they depend so much on reliability for their brand.

    iMT is indeed normal rev matching like that in the 370Z, but the most amazing thing about the stick, which Elana missed to point out ;), is that the adaptive cruise control does not get turned off when using the clutch to switch between gears. I hope this sort of software logic becomes standard across the industry so that we see a resurgence in manuals!

I’m looking forward to driving this car, it’s a bit of a shame that Toyota made the car so much smaller than the sedan, if it was the same length and an inch or two taller it would easily have 20+ cubic feet of trunk space.

    My ‘88 Corolla FX-16 GTS was a total blast. Manual trans. Super low gearing. Very quick around town, heavily bolstered sport seats, alloys, and weighed almost nothing. So yes, they did make a fun FWD Corolla back in the day. Short of real world terrible back seat room, this would be a fun usable hatch for a couple or those with small kids.

    • @rightlanehog3151

      You made great points and provided an excellent history lesson as well. Not only did they make that fun, FWD Corolla but they made it just a few miles from where this video was shot in California. As others have debated since this new hatch debuted, the Camry's 200 hp engine would give this a nice shot of extra thrust without turbo worries.

    $25000 is perfectly normal. Just look how expensive everything are these days. Parents got my brother a then-new 2001 Civic LX for $13200 and those days are long gone. It's inflation at work. Let's not forget these 2019 "Econoboxes"are made and equipped like entry-level luxury car 10 years ago. Thank's for the refreshing review.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 5 років тому +4

      agreed. Dont forget too that the base Corolla hatch starts at under $20k which is incredible value. The XSE adds some style a few appointments and infotainment pieces, but still starts at under $23k. If there are any incentives, even that could be hugely attractive.

    • @emacemacii
      @emacemacii 5 років тому +3

      @@ALMX5DP Yes. I also wish Toyota put the 2.5 engine in the XSE. I don't think the manufacturing cost will increase very much. It's not like adding a turbo. If they put the 8AR turbo 4 pot into this Corolla that will drive the price up too far. But the extra 500c.c. will wake up this little "warm" hatch perfectly.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 5 років тому +2

      @@emacemacii It would cost Toyota virtually nothing to offer the 2.5 as an option. Car & Driver testing showed the 2.5 Camry got better highway mpg than the new Corolla hatch so consumers could expect a nice bump up in power without a downside in fuel economy. It wasn't that long ago that the Corolla XRS could be optioned with the Camry's 2.4 so who knows what the sporty Toyota Motor Corporation of today might come up with.

    What a fine review and a welcome new perspective. This car will be much more appreciated as a major upgrade from a Yaris hatch rather than a direct replacement for earlier Toyotas like the Matrix. The new hatch simply lacks the practical capacity and adaptability offered by previous generations of Toyotas and Scions. As many already know, Toyota offers a FUN and fully functional Corolla wagon in Europe that eliminates all the shortcomings and compromises built into this hatch. Kudos for the call to choose the manual version. Around the world manuals are driven in all sorts of conditions only Americans treat them with fear and loathing. #Savethemanuals #SaveTheWagon #SaveHandBrakes

      Right Lane Hog I own this car and have all the practical capacity and adaptability I need. Your comment may be accurate for some folks, but not a whole bunch of people who love it.
      I used to own a 2014 VW Sportswagon Diesel TDI and I don’t miss anything about it except for the acceleration/HP and fuel economy that makes a Diesel so unique. Mine did better fuel economy than a Prius. But this little hatch is much more peppy and has a symbiotic effect with its driver. Makes one feel like one with the road.
      I rented the new Mazda 3 stick in Washington DC last week, and tho it does have more HP/torque than this one-it was imbalanced in so many ways. Felt Heavy, and not in a good way. Visibility wasn’t great; handling was stiff and it dragged the first two seconds after accelerating. I was really shocked at how much it disappointed me. I had it for 5 days. When I got back home and picked up my Corolla hatch it was like night & day. Truly, I’m loving my hatch!

    • @rightlanehog3151
      @rightlanehog3151 5 років тому +3

      @@LookingGlass24 Thanks for the detailed feedback. It is very telling to see that you refer to your new car as "this little hatch" after previously owning a VW Sportwagen. Clearly you desired a much more compact car and Toyota delivered on your specific consumer preference. The hatch is a very sound design with many positive attributes. I am certain the new Corolla sedan will be impressive as well but I want the third option to have VW Sportwagen space with Toyota QDR as is offered in other markets. In other words, Toyota customers in North America ought to have compact sedan, hatch and wagon options just like VW buyers. If VW can do it, Toyota can do it better. Happy trails. #ConsumerChoice #WeWantWagons

    I really want to love this car, but I am still not sold on the interior space. I think the Civic has a nicer interior even down to the layout and choice of materials. (Too much piano black in this car) and no Android auto in 2019 is just plain weird. (I'm a forever Google user) Although on the flip side at almost 7KRPM redline and 6MT is really awesome. Glad to see Toyota helping save the manuals.

      @rightlanehog3151 5 років тому +1

      Most of us want to love this car but it is around a foot shorter than the Civic hatch! When seen as the halfway point in Toyota's global portfolio between the Corolla sedan and Corolla wagon the new hatch makes perfect sense. When viewed as our only 'practical' alternative to the sedan it leaves us wanting.

    @4:00 I think the idea behind the audio volume for directions separate is so you can choose to have it muted and your music loud or vise versa. I experienced this in my 2003 Celica today when I choose to use Google Maps on my phone with the auxiliary cable. For some reason when directions come up on the phone it's much louder through the voice of the directions compared to the music but you can't make it the other way around where the music loud and voice is lower. I could be wrong though...

    7:39 HAHA Indeed this hill assist thing looks marvelous. See back then when I was getting my DL in Brazil like in 1990 pretty much 100% of normal cars were manuals. And stopping and starting in a hill was the one big hurdle to overcome. But for the past 25 years I've been living in Japan so all this time I didn't drive a manual. Maybe I should try this Corolla. I mean, until prices go down a little.

  • @MalachiEastling

    Nice video, well said.. Manual all the way too! I just purchased the 2019 civic.. The 6spd manual feels more like an automatic-- I'm not digging it so much to be honest.. I should have car shopped around a tad more.

      Regarding safety technology, it has a leg up on the Civic. Adaptive cruise, lane keep assist and forward collision warning and low speed braking being what i first thought of. It's also available in CVT which the Civic Si is not. And quite a bit cheaper if you dont get the XSE trim, which I think is just appearancy bits.

    $25 Grand is too steep for a Corolla hatch. That's price is more appropriate for a Corolla wagon if Toyota wasn't too stingy to make it available in its global product line.

    • @rightlanehog3151

      I would like to see that Corolla wagon offered here with the 2.5 from the Camry. A 6 speed manual or the Carmry's 8 speed automatic would make it Toyota's very own SportWagon. Naturally they could offer the Hybrid too.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 5 років тому +6

      Also having driven in SF many times, hill assist would have been nice, especially in rush hour. And it really doesnt need more HP. It's a fine balance of utility, affordability and performance.

    • @ALMX5DP

      @@doccyber I said balance of, not outright. I had tons of fun in my Mk1 Focus with around 160hp. Track days, autocrosses, daily driving and backroads were a blast. People online either dont like ringing out their vehicles when turns are involved or just look at numbers. There's more to a car than the individual parts that make it up. For the price, this is plenty fun but obviously the market has a lot of good offerings right now so cant go wrong any way you choose.
