The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE is a SERIOUS Contender!

- When you think of a Toyota Corolla, typically you don't think of bright blue, manual transmission, and a fun hatchback...but that's exactly what this 2019 Corolla Hatch is. This XSE trim offers a lot of features for the price, and a new 2.0 engine that's got enough grunt to feel adequate and slightly fun at times, especially with the available 6 speed manual Corolla. Space isn't as big as it could be, but this is pretty small and very easy to maneuver around. Surprisingly, there are only two trims..the SE and XSE shown in the video. The base SE starts under $20k and has several standard features. Let me know of your thoughts!

Thanks so much for watching this 2019 Corolla Hatchback Review!
#SaveTheManuals #CorollaHatch #Toyota - Авто та транспорт
Thanks for watching! I said “simulated” 1st gear for CVT, that’s my bad...i meant it’s a fixed first gear. I also said it doesn’t have remote start, but it has “Remote connect” where you can start it with the app, smart watch, etc...but it’s only for a 6 month trial then you have to pay $8/month or $80/year if you want to keep it.
What do you think of the Corolla Hatch and would you take this over the C-HR I reviewed recently?
Previously I told you all I was planning to do a comparison with the Civic Hatch, but I didn’t get time to get them together. I might be able to do a review of the Civic Hatch soon and put something together! Thanks again!
Just wanted to add that the car does in fact have a remote start! Not sure why Toyota doesn't make it more clear, but you can remote start using the key fob by pressing the lock button twice, then doing a long press until the hazards light up. This should work regardless of subscription status (except on the 2022 Corolla Cross).
Never thought I'd say this but that Corolla is sexy
I have had mine for 3 days and I love it. 6 speed manual is the way to go!
That’s awesome, hope you continue to enjoy it! 👍
I'm looking at buying one this Friday. I can't decide on the 6 speed of the auto....I know there is a decent difference in gas mileage and the auto start an go is nice seeing as how I live in the city. However, I do go to the canyons and I enjoy manuals... Hard choice. Did you test drive both?
Brandon Watkins go for the manual my friend!
Excellent detailed review as usual 👍🏻 looking forward to many more reviews from you Merrill
Thank you very much, I appreciate that!
I love the color 😊
Great thorough review Nolan!!!
No doubt, really stands out! Thank you very much 😁
I’ve always loved this car and really want to buy it.
I just bought a 2020 smoked paprika color . Dealer had 3 the same color one being the se that I bought and the other two xse . We bought it solely for our 40 mile commute to work each day because wife and I ride together most days . Dealer made us a great deal ! Sticker was 23,640 and he came off 3,200 dollars . Descent car for what it is and getting around 43 -46 mpg with nice amenities. Happy with the car so far . It is the cut btw
Great Review! I put red reflectors lengthwise in the fake exhaust outlet. First I bought inexpensive rectangular reflectors, cut them lengthwise with a box cutter, then stuck them inside the chrome outlets. They look great and factory perfect on my 6- Speed Black Hatchback XSE.
Very cool, great idea! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your Hatch! 😁
Really great overview 👍
Thank you!!
Great review Nolan and beautiful car. I hope to get a CH-R soon for easier entry and exit. The new Corolla comes to the UK in February/March.
Thank you very much! Excellent point in the CHR, definitely a better ride height for that. Very cool and thanks for watching!
I'm digging this Corolla hatchback. I might just trade in my 17 Corolla LE sedan. The 2020 Corolla hatchback now supports both CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Hi Nolan! Great review of this car! This car is AWESOME and will kick CH-R in the hiney! Just my opinion! Hope you are having an awesome week my friend! :-)
Thanks man! It’s going well and I hope you have a great rest of your week as well 👍
Hey Nolan! Glad you got your hands on a Corolla hatch....and a stick shift to boot! 🙌 I love the styling. Definitely better then the Civic hatchback. I like the two-toned interior as well. Glad to see Toyota go with all the high quality interior trim....something the Corolla needed. Also like the full LED’s and the standard safety tech. The only thing missing for me is a sun roof. WTH was Toyota thinking omitting that option? 🤦♂️ Between the two trims, ya gotta go with the XRS with the 6-speed! Great video review man!
Thank you very much! I was thinking the same thing about the sunroof ...blows my mind lol. I would hope they’d add it sometime. Thanks for watching! 👍
I like Toyota's bold move with the design of this car. If I were in the market for a hatchback, this would most definitely make my list. Not really sure how I feel about the partial gear/cvt auto trans, but I would be willing to give it a shot none the less.
I’m with ya..it’s a stylish option and well rounded. I’m not sure how that CVT feels either...thanks for watching!
Thanks for the test drive! :) The car is actually amazing, not "not too bad". :) I also would prefer this car to CH-R. Corolla seems to be more practical.
Beautiful car, and beautiful color
yes !
Test drove a 6MT while shopping a few weeks ago, it was okay. Fun to drive despite being down on power. But it seriously lacks interior space compared to other hatchbacks. I ended up getting an Elantra GT N-Line
Thank you for the cup holders!! Many of these reviewers do not bring cups. Here in Texas we need to fit 2 Whataburger 44oz. or 2 large Yeti.
iamnotfernando glad you like it! Pretty sure I had a large chick fil a cup in there with my wife’s midsize coffee thing...and it was all good. Little tight but fit! I should add more stuff!
iamnotfernando there’s only whataburger in Texas right
Needs a sunroof and garage controls with that said pretty good car
I bought this car in XSE trim and yeah, it definitely needs a sunroof if only for that tilt ventilation. Great car and In fact I traded a 10th gen touring civic for it. It’s a much better built car inside and out, and better quality over that civic
I looked at a lot of hatches... Veloster, Elantra GT, Mazda 3, Civic... at the end of the day, after talking myself down off the cliff with some of the HOT'er variants... I went with the Corolla SE CVT Hatch. There were some trade-offs to be sure, power and storage space being the main ones... but there were some serious pro's. Even in the base SE I got a LOT of features that I could only acquire in higher trim levels with the other brands... if there was a "main theme", I'd say I got a LOT of value and reliability for the money. Particularly because Toyota was offering some aggressive deals to clear out the '19 models. But... the real kicker was MPG... I drive 95+ miles per day on my commute, 99% highway, and I've got to tell you... locking in the adaptive cruise, I'm actually averaging 44/45 mpg on my highway commute. ZERO buyers remorse here. I think the Civic was probably the closest competitor... but it had a few subjective deal breakers for me... I just couldn't get past the slightly more 'juvenile", some would say more "aggressive" styling. I also could not get past how low you sit in the Civic... it just did not feel as natural or easy to get in and out of. Like I said, subjective, but that was my take.
I’m glad to hear that! You can’t go wrong with that. Awesome MPG too! Thanks for sharing this and I hope you continue to enjoy it! 😁👍
My SE came stock with 18in alloy wheels.
Yeah a sunroof would be nice
I have this car with a CVT and black interior. That white looks like it would get dirty quick. I agree with the space issue. There is not a whole lot of it. About all you will get is two carry ons in the back hatch. And that’s about it. I guess you could do 3 carry laying on their side. Not a huge fan of the piano black trim. Got this car over the civic hatch cause I didn’t like the console and the lack of a volume knob on the Honda. Really really love this car. Also you mentioned “the new two liter engine” well that two liter engine in my car needed to be completely replaced.
Ah wow what happened to the engine? Hope it was all covered by warranty!
Prime Autotainment yes it was. Got a 12 year 120k mile bumper to bumper warranty out of it.
Wow good deal!
I'm curious what happened to the engine as well? I have about 25k miles on mine and had the cvt replaced under recall but no engine issues
There is a remote start using the key fob. Do the following: Press lock 2 times then the 3rd time hold it. Voila! You have remote start. The only downside is that when you go to open your door, the car will shut off.
Sorry I missed that! Didn’t realize it till afterwards. I’ve never seen them advertise it but I’ve tried it worth other Toyota’s and it worked too. Thanks for the note!
Yea it needs a sunroof ... I was comparing my 17 Acura ILX to maybe trade in for the Corolla XSE hatchback but I definitely need a sunroof ...
Why? So you can have water leaks later on? So you can burn your scalp with sun?
Good review! That poor clutch though LOL! One comment, you said that the CVT has a simulated first gear, but it's an actual traditional first gear before kicking over to the CVT.
Haha thanks. Lol I was waiting for someone to say something 😅. Thanks for the correction, I misspoke!
There IS a remote start! It's good for warming up remotely, but it'll turn off when you open it--good for kids messing around!
There is actually remote start via Amazon Alexa i’m pretty sure. It’s on the new RAV 4 and they said it was on all their newer models.
Yep Spencer you’re right! I totally missed that. It’s “Remote connect” where you can start if from that, an app, smart watch etc...but it’s only free for 6 months then you can elect to pay $8/mo or $80/year if you want to keep it
I have the Toyota Corolla 2019 SXe and I love it it is Flame Blue. The only thing I wish I could get is a automatic Hatchback truck opener
Can you help?
OOPS! XSE
I don't own one of these, but I am looking to buy one... but I saw a video earlier and they said if you hit the lock button twice and hold... it remote starts the car.
Yes that’s true and I had no clue at the time of this video. Sorry! It’s kind of annoying though because once you open the door, the car shuts off even if you have the key fob. But at least it still has remote start
I feel like trading in my '17 Corolla SE sedan for this hatch. The road noise sucks though. As soon as the tires wear out I'm going for a slightly bigger tire that will fit with the 18" rims.
That would probably help a lot. Another thing is possibly adding some insulation. In the rear cargo area and maybe doors, under floor mats. But those tires in sure are the biggest thing. These drive pretty nice!
I’m very upset that there is no hybrid in us.
Scotty Kilmer would be proud
Nice hatch but no available sun roof?! Deal breaker for me, i’d even pay extra but it is not even available!
No kidding. I don’t get it. I would assume they’ll add it but I don’t think the CHR offers one either? Craziness
I am very interested to know what you would use a Sunroof for. I have had 2 cars with sunroofs and not once did I use it
@@jamesgand828 doesn’t have to be opened to let in more light and make the interior brighter. Even so, I’m not sure why you are interested to know what they’d use it for, there is only two options kiddo, open or closed and they both have a use.
I thought the CVT has an actual first gear rather than virtual.
Yep you’re right! My bad, I misspoke!
Buaracın bagajı kaç litre
Şimdiden teşekkürler
But is it "A cut above" it's class?
There is a remote start.... using a key fob too
Yep that was my bad, not on all Toyota’s but if they have the “audio plus” I believe. I don’t know why they don’t advertise it. The only bummer is the car shuts off once you open the door
@@PrimeAutotainment all good, i owned this car too :) same color and trim level, cvt
Samuel Sandoval that’s sweet! How are you liking it?
I like this car but I have a few gripes. I really hate the piano black stuff in the interior, that stuff is gonna get scratched to hell in a few years. Not super in love with the placement of the screen, and the back seat room is really terrible. The storage room in the hatch itself is quite small too.
Nice exterior design tho, love that. I do like that it has a naturally aspirated engine too, and I hear the manual is quite good. I also hear conflicting reports about the noise level on the interiors. I am pretty shocked at how loud it is inside the vehicle in your video.
I definitely agree with what you’re saying. The road noise was disappointing...louder than expected. For comparisons sake I just got done with the Elantra and that was quieter by a decent amount. It was a bummer
why do you need paddle shifters on a CVT?
Good question. I guess Toyota put them there to make it feel more sporty...only time I would use them is to engine brake down a hill lol
Any word on when Toyota will have Android Auto? And also can you get it on an existing system later on as an update?
Hey Ryan sorry I’m late getting back to you but you may have heard yesterday that Toyota is adding Android auto to the 2020 Tacoma for sure so it’s gotta be only a matter of time with the rest. As far as putting it in an existing system I haven’t heard anything in that yet..I would hope so!
@@PrimeAutotainment No worries dude. Thanks for the response.
I like it, even though I drive an A250 4Matic Benz Sport 2l Turbo, 4wheel drive.
When are we gonna get the 2019 Nissan Altima review?
I’m glad you asked and I’m sorry I haven’t gotten that yet. Right after I did the poll...I went to my Nissan dealer and found out it recently had a change in ownership and my contacts are gone...so I don’t have access to their cars as of right now. Then I reached out to Nissan press people and finally got approval for a vehicle...but they can’t guarantee the Altima yet and I won’t get it until March...but at least they’ll give me a chance. Sorry about that...I’m having a 10k sub giveaway video with some updates coming out soon. Thanks for your continued support!! 👍
TOYOTA IS THE BEST
does the odd clutch lead to frequent stalling?
Nope I rarely ever drive a clutch but this was probably the easiest manual I’ve ever driven
Fake exhaust tips is a NO for me! Guess I'm going with the Honda Civic Hatchback.
A person can probably sleep in the back with seats folded flat like that
Just in case if no one brought this out yet, there is a remote start using the Toyota remote connect app. :)
I also didn’t know this at the time, but some can do remote start with the key fob. Hit the lock button 3 times and hold it on the 3rd time till the lights start to flash
but the SE does have heated seats..
Are you in Canada?
@@PrimeAutotainment ohhh k yea
Ain't worth 25k but still sexy design
michael cordell I may get one of these when my ‘03 Accord dies. Won’t be for a while.
Evan Nicholson Same if my ‘02 civic dies, if it even does.
Hey, I’m cool with that...
Evan Nicholson i changed my mind, i dont want to get one with cvt transmission. Manual transmission would be worse since theres a lot of traffic in my area.
Blank buttons makes me fill incomplete.
Haha yes no kidding!
Put a turbo on it and pump up the HP to at least 250. Then it will be worth 25 grand.
Honestly this car feels like toyota made it to be tinkered with. Good thing I avoid warranties.
That infotainment tablet is tragic.
It seems to be Toyota’s new thing..Rav4 looks a lot like it now too
It's kinda funny looking up there but the tablet itself is nice and sturdy. I'm used to it and love my hatch. Doesn't distract while driving either. 🙂
Ah shit i'm 6 feet tall. that will be a tight fit.
No remote start shows Toyota is smart because remote start can easily be stolen
I was actually wrong, they have remote start in the key fob, it just isn’t advertised. When a vehicle with a “Smart key” like this starts the car, it’s locked and can’t be driven without the key fob, plus the engine actually shuts off when the door opens
This car is so noisy, it sounds like it comes with a built in tornado. Noisy big time.
Haha yeah it surprised me! They really need to improve that...my guess is putting some insulation around the cargo spare tire area will help but not enough..
Cvt
CVT transmission SUCK! Get the manual
