If you want to make more a lot more power without swapping your engine, forced induction is the way to go. Bolting on a turbo (or two) or a supercharger gives you a big power increase without having to refill a bottle. .
But which is the BEST choice? That's a tough question. To find out, we borrowed two Nissan 370Z Nismos: one fitted with a Rotrex supercharger, the other a pair of turbos. Can we settle this once and for all?

Did you like the fan interview setup? Let us know!
Worked nicely here. Depending on the owners, you may elect to drop it.
Some people aren't good on camera and they shouldn't be immortalized for the Internet to do what the Internet does.
It's great to talk to people who drive modified and get their honest opinions. Forums are tedious. I like the segment 👍 Knowledge is power 🌈
Yes, definitely a great idea to get the owner's insight and thought process.
Worked well. I liked it better than the in-car, because you can be more honest while in the car :)
Owners will always be able to describe the realities of each setup.
I enjoyed this. Tbh, it reminded me of how TST used to be. Driving all sorts of modified cars, having fun, giving good feedback, etc. TST has changed. Let’s bring back old TST. After all, TST’s subscriber and view rating were much higher and faster evolving back then than they are now…
It's a mixed bag, actually. While our initial growth came from longer form videos with garage-set interviews, a HUGE amount of the growth happened when Matt began doing the One Takes. - ZK
And for every person who likes old TST better there is someone else who likes new TST. This happens everywhere given enough time/success. Let's all enjoy the current TST we DO get and appreciate a world where these things exist.
Not everything has to be about growth. Growth chasing is a trap.
@@Dudeman9339 I agree. But as we can see with this video, there are a lot of people who still enjoy this type of TST. Both the old and new is good. I prefer the old, but that’s just me.
I do love the reviewing of viewer cars. I only want everyone to have their car sorted by the time they appear on an episode.
@@TheSmokingTire yeah. Me personally enjoyed the real world enthusiast builds that Matt used to review (not taking you out of the equation but I don’t think you were with TST at that time)(I like your vids too you have got a lot better in the last year and a half 🤙). The reviewing of these unattainable cars to most of us, that every UA-camr is reviewing within the same month, is a little boring to me. But that’s just me. I like both the old and new styles, but prefer the old over the new. I hope you do more videos like this one because it was fun to watch.
13:04 the writing on the boat. 😂😂😂 FWP.
I’m the previous owner of the 2012 supercharged. So cool to see it featured here.
thats cool bro.... did you deal with the same problems they had in this vid and how much did you spend on modding it? Ive been wanting to supercharge my 04 g35 sedan. Although not the same platforms, they share a lot of similarities in terms of how tuning is done, etc... Id die a happy man if i could get my G to hit 350-400hp reliably. Of course more power is fun, but 400 hp in a 3400 pound car is enough to put a smile on any persons face.
@@staydown4bo I understand you bro but make sure you have the money to waste boosting a high compression VQ engine... If you're not building the motor I'd say don't bother as far as reliability goes there is NONE on these engines
@@Beliefacy You’re just talking out your ass lol those power levels can be had reliably w no worries bro
@@Beliefacy man said vq engines aren't reliable...whatttt?!!!
@@malikphillips4944 BOOSTED DE engines are not reliable at 450+ horse only HR and VHR engines can more reliably push 450+ there's a few exceptions (like I stated above WHEN BUILT they can handle more power)
Smoking Tires, do this more often I think people enjoy being able to watch as well as express their thoughts with each other. The interaction, if done in a mature, patient, and understanding way is a great way to create discussion between fans as well as encourage people to become more passionate about their builds. Thumbs up.
So I knew even then that my 95 VR6 Jetta wasn't the fastest but it did have the most distinct and coolest exhaust note of the cars in Omaha.(well the uneven header WRX's might of had me beat, I mean I thought they sounded awesome)I stayed N/A and the 15 degree staggered 6's head DOHC/SOHC set up sort of destroyed any attempts to make good N/A power. Yes I had B16A2, B18c1 and B18c5, H22, cylinder head flow envy. Yet what most people don't know about The 12v VR6 engine was that it was originally designed to be a turbo diesel, so it was originally made to take 400 or 500lbs. of torque. VAG at the last minute switched the VR6 to an N/A platform but still retained the way it was built. So if you can get your hands on an older 12v VR6 and put some money into rebuilding it(the miles have to be pretty high by now), you can get a reliable S/C or Turbo build for not a lot of money.
My final build for my 95 VR6 Jetta
3.94 Euro Final Drive
P&P' Big Valve Head
DRC268 Cams
Schrick VGI(Hind sight it would have made more power if I had stock intake manifold ported and polished with the neck re worked so the turn corner that blocked air flow would have flowed better. People on VW Vortex did this with good results in power)
GIAC Chip
Turn2 CAI
3 Race Pulleys(I forget the brand they were pretty popular back in the day)
Autotech Fly Wheel
Neuspeed exhaust(wish I would have went with Technotics)
Intake manifold spacer(surprisingly kept the temps on the Schrick VGI down quite a bit)
2.9 Euro TB(helped a ton with throttle response)
Bosal Header(which we all learned later on made no power. I should have had ported/gasket matched the exhaust manifold and lower intake mani for a good 5-7whp)
Bilstein shocks and Neuspeed lowering springs(actually helped a ton for handling)
Also had Black Forest extreme race motor mounts and transmission mounts which helped too.
No. I wasn't the fastest but 200whp+ in a 2900lb. in the middle 90's wasn't that slow compared to other N/A cars around at the time. I won some I lost some, but what I got most from people at car meets was respect b/c people with VR4 Galants, 3000GT's, MKIV Supras, 300Z TT's, even V8's would come up to me and tell me they wished their car's exhaust could sound like that.
💯💯💯
thanks Jessie
There are 600+whp turbo VR6 running around the streets. No reason some jabroni couldn’t do same with a Jetta if they don’t mind the larger chassis and oddly proportioned aesthetics. Would make for a fun sleeper for sure. Sold a lot of them, but many driven until mileage killed them. Look around Southern California with areas that have low commute, maybe find some that need some love for your next project car 😊
@@joeracer302 Hey you're awesome, thanks a ton. It's the sound of The 12v VR6 once given a proper intake and exhaust that is unforgettable.
Cool story bro
Liking the format Zack, just feels like it’s somewhat dependent on the affability of the owners
Totes
I hate the new format when driving I want to see the road not the driver
As someone who absolutely cannot keep a car stock, I love this!
1. I'm glad neither car had a fuck boi exhaust. 370s can sound good.
2. I'm also happy you were able to do a higher tuned Fast Intentions car. Yall did that rocket engineer's car and he was not representing. I think he was tuned to 400hp? Like Alfredo, I'm also tuned to 6xxhp E85, 5xxhp 93 flex fuel setup.
3. IIRC GTM isn't in business anymore? The other guy might be better doing a newer supercharger kit. The answer is on the forums. A couple of companies have fixed the 370Z supercharger issues. Oh and the only thing you need to know about the stock LSD is that it is trash. Get a real one. Wavetrac, OS Giken, etc.
I had a similar supercharger kit as him, I had the stage 2. You can for sure make 5xx+ on 93 like I did. Needs to dump that turbosmart BOV since it just provides surge. Proper cooling and supporting mods gets you to 5xx relatively easy. Idk if jumping to stillen with an upgraded A2A kit is worth the money
Amen. Those exhausts can be beyond obnoxious but can also sound great.
Just got my block and heads back from the machine shop. Ready for my vortech kit and the OS giken Superlock. Can't wait.
I love the NISMO `12-`13 wheels. Underrated wheels.
9-14
I think they're quite overrated. They're on every modified VQ in California lol.
I had a vortech 350z, had some bolt ons and smaller pulley, made 430whp. It would heat soak really bad on hot days. On a really hot day I raced a very stock looking 350z and I couldn't pull him in. So Zack when you say his Z didn't feel much faster then a stock Z its very possible that it really wasn't much faster.
Great to have audience cars featured again, it really kept you guys well different from every other car UA-camr.
I like the throwback viewer rides, but really feel using two identical platforms taken in different directions is a great addition. If you do reader rides, I'd argue the contrast adds a great dimension especially for viewers considering either trajectory. Thanks for putting this together.
I really enjoyed the interviews before the drive, it seemed like a super relaxed car rundown. I feel like when the owners were in the cars, like when Matt used to do them, it would tend throw off the driving, the commentary, and kind of censored him a bit... It would be cool to have Matt do something similar to this and you guys switch off and on. Perhaps maybe one of these types a video every 6-8 weeks. Either way, they are fun to watch videos and I appreciate the effort you guys put into the channel!!!
Great video. The closest thing to an “apples to apples” comparison of the two FI systems. Also the great knowledgeable owners also helped a lot
this type of interview format is great. keeping the discussions separate from the driving so that it's not taking away from the thought process
Make more of this videos having two cars with different ways of making power is a great concept
Great video
love this. great to see a mix of new car “one takes” and enthusiast car drives/reviews.
Noooooo I wish I would have known this and had you guys test my supercharged z! Completely different set up as it is a stillen, but instead of the water cooler, I did an Air to Air set up! Complete with full e85
VQ Fans check out The Speed Academy’s 500hp NA video, mental.
750ish hp with the hybrid system! Just a spectacle of engineering
Zack with the dry wit.. almost sounding like some certain British presenters ... love it 🤣
Excellent car control on display by Zack-- great catch. Those boat flybys are certainly interesting..
What an interesting name for a boat @13:05.
Digging the new interview setup! Loving this return to form of driving fan submitted cars again, while keeping things fresh. Keep it up! 👍
Great review! I really like Zack's videos ... once I scroll past Matt's ad at the start.
I went from a pristine FD3S to a 370Z 09 Touring + Sport. I can’t tell you how much I love the Z as a daily operator.
id recommend g35 sedans or coupes to those who cant afford 350/370s right now. they are all going for like 10k at the very least. You can get a g35 for like 3-6k. Same engine as early 350s and not to mention that 90% of Z parts fit perfectly on all Gs. even the m45 V8 is sleeper in the nissan/infiniti world
Nice video.
The "issue" is that one car is a work in progress whereas the other is a finished build.
I personally prefer a supercharger as long as you can keep it cool.
The 350/370 Z gets a lot of hate among the fandom but it's a proven platform for a great price
And different fuels, for a hot day the Eth can make a difference.
I think a lot of the hate is mainly from those online, fact of the matter is they have multiple racing formats and compete in pretty much every type of automotive event
and you're pretty much guaranteed to see at least one at any cars and coffee.
As you said a fantastic platform for the money.
Dave Taylor: Totally agree with you on the "work in progress" vs "finished build". The turbo Z had the same owner for 10 years and has been modifying/perfecting it over those 10 years. The supercharged guy owned it for 6 months and still has a lot of work to do.
Really like the VS format along with the open air chats. Good work
*Supermarket intercom* "Will the owner of a white boat come to the canyons lost and found. Will the owner of a white boat come get it from the lost and found."
Amazing timing TST! You two have always been my favourite automotive journalists and I've been debating SC vs turbo for my 6mt G37 for some time now. Looking forward to this watch and getting your thoughts.
One brilliant thing about you guys is you both will criticise things you dislike or not get on with, But still praise other attributes you like. In the same car. Not many people do this unfortunately. It's always refreshing. So many cars will have their flaws but they're no less charming 👌🏻
Whats a good mile range to add forced induction to the motor would it be reliable to add that when the car has 120k on motor?
There are options to replace the VLSD to a mechanical LSD like a Quaife or OS Giken version to eliminate the slippage under high temp load.
I used to have a big ol FP Black in my Evo, and while it was fun, spooling it up was not. The supercharger makes less HP, but gives much more predictability and confidence. Modern turbos spool pretty early, however, it's just different. Personally, still prefer a supercharger.
I would like to see the new version of Top Guns kit vs a new AAM or Greddy TT kit. I just installed the Top Guns supercharger kit on my Z . I live in Tx where your pants soak when you step outside and my car runs like a bat out of hell with no issues. I can't wait for winter to arrive , I'm curious to see what difference I'll feel when the winter air rolls around and retune it for E85
This format is awesome! It shows both sides and expresses both philosophies. Drivability is important and most overlook that.
+1 .. Herr Zack is a professional .... It's what you get when actually doing the homework .. Many thanks, great format (real-world ownership) Subscribed.
Great Job TST!
Thank You!
Great to see you have fast hands Zack and caught that slide. That could have ended badly, but you have some skills
Hey Guys, Im Jake with the Supercharged Z. Big thanks again to @thesmokingtire for having us out. It was a great time. If you want to see how I tackle the heat soaking issues on my Z go ahead and check out my channel. I'll be posting Z videos Soon!
✊🙏
Nice to see both cars ripping it. Shame about your VLSD, Personally I would swap it out ASAP. That thing looks dangerous.
I'll check your channel out, still thinking out boosting mine. Leaning towards a SC setup. But would definitely go air-2-air 👍
@@Hi_Doctor_Nick yea I have Air to air, just cooling in the Z’s compact engine bay is comprised. Working on ways to make it more efficient
Did you see the graffiti on the boat at 15 and a half? lol
Some “angry” ignorant
I thought I was the only one
I have a VF Engineering Vortex super charged e46. Mixing the 91 octane with e85 to get the fuel to e20 makes a big difference in performance even on the 91 tune, same boost.
Hi guys on the hunt to buy a 370 nismo soon. Can I get any recommendations on what type and brand turbo I should be looking at?
I’m going topgunz ace kit pro charger for mine, just can’t beat the reliability and the heat management that it can provide. No hate on turbo setups of course 😘
9:26 Yes. Zack’s got skills
Nice video. It's always appreciate when the issue of how a car fits unusually tall drivers is given attention, but too much isn't made of it. I'm 6'5 and information can help me a lot, but I'm an outlier. I find the 370z to be a really interesting car, and one of the few that slots in to my price/performance/daily drivability wheelhouse - except I just can't fit. But the reality is that the average adult male is 5'9, and 75-80% of adult males are 5'11 or under.
Charming message written on the abandoned boat ! 😵
Why would weight be a rumor? You can literally take it to a scale and weigh it.
Also I have a VLSD and it doesn't lock or unlock, the fluid just pulls the other side along if it's spinning at a lower speed. For me it's actually worked quite well, I've been able to drift and autocross with it.
It sounds like the supercharged Z needs to change the diff fluid, possibly to a thicker viscosity.
I'm glad you've had luck with vlsd... as a drifter myself, it was a dead mission... it was impossible to transition corners so I had to weld it
@@ryanmcburrows8051 I mean welded is def going to be better for drifting. I'm no pro drifter but I've gone out a few times and got to where I can do a good long drift and some transitions...e-brake doesn't even work.
@@Dolby109 my e brake is dead too😂.. I'm no pro either only been drifting a couple years and I was told to learn without one so that's what I did.. It helps make you a better driver in the long run.. most of the time hydro/ e brake initiations look lame anyway
Yeah I'm not sure what was up. Jake watched the clip and said the kick-out wasn't driver error or cold tires. He took the diff. to a shop to get it checked. It was one of the weirdest moments I've had in a car. - Zack
@@TheSmokingTire Oddly enough years ago I had a similar issue in a Malibu of all things. If you would load it up in a corner it would just randomly hitch, as if the shock just gave up. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't even detect it because they didn't understand it was when going fast through corners.
Anyway traded that for a Fiesta ST (partly because of Matt, and partly because I was tired of driving bland automatic cars), and still have that as my daily.
As for the Z's diff, there is no telling...it should be somewhat progressive with it's grabbing, but maybe something is floating around in there?
Forced induction does add some weight so not surprised if they are slightly heavier than stock numbers.
Great Video Zach, the lil conversation at the end is what made it for me
I really dig the steering wheel on Alfredo's car
Glad you found a way to reincorporate owner narratives. Good video!
Nice review, sohomotor sport and topgunz speed works both make 500 + whp turn key supercharger kits under 8k that will experience no heatsoak and are very reliable. I bought a topgunz a2a kit for my stillen supercharged 350z.
How much power were you able to make with the A2A kit? That is if you've got it installed and dyno'd already.
@@p_934 430 h.p car dyno 360 whp on a mustang dyno . I haven't gotten the a2a kit installed yet , but when I do I want the car tuned to around 420 -450 whp
A2A is the way to go if going SC'd. I am very happy with my SC'd Q50
13:03 the writing on the boat😂
I have the soho v2 supercharger kit. Never heard of this kit before, very interesting setup
I'm looking into that kit. How has it been for you? How much boost you pushing?
Hell ya!! Reason I used to love this channel … Peoples builds 👍👍 great episode!
This guy is so smart in his descriptions.
love the interview segment
09:25 can we just say, great save? 👌
I think a superchargers are good for small to mid size tracks/city/canyon driving....coming from a ss/SC cobalt ss owner. Turbos are really great for drags/rolls/highway pulls and "put back you in your seat" power.
My cobalts supercharger has boost come on in relation to load and throttle amount. If you slowly roll on the throttle you can go to redline without going into boost but you press the gas halfway and you're into full boost....which is good for the start of a roll race, but they flatline at the top.
Both sound awesome in their own way.
you can also build turbos for canyon/tight roads, i get that in the US it's all about the straight line speed, but you can just have smaller turbos with variable geometry, twin scroll, and tuned for linear power instead of big single turbo tuned for everything at the top and all about the HP numbers, you can do more with a turbo build than just the typical runway racer unusable sketchy power
Yes, great change from the usual
Wow..an actual cool episode of TST.... 😀
Great video. I love the platform. I am a fan of the G37/Q60 which is just a luxury version of the same chassis and power train. Honest sports/GT car for everyone money. The AWD system on the G37 is awesome. Rear wheel drive with a nice imperceptible pull from the front if needed. Makes it really effective in snow.
Re: turbo lag, latest hybrids also spin the turbo which does even better removing the lag.
13:04 gotta love cali
For overheating issues, swap to Evans Waterless Coolant, but do the conversion correctly with the Prep Fluid and proper drain and blow out every drop you can, look up their UA-cam videos including the Jay Leno endorsement, I have it in my 2019 Nismo and also my Triumph Street Triple R bike and is superb, fit and forget, never needs changing
Matt IMO should of purchased that laptop for Zach.
Great video idea and execution. Fun watch for sure.
TST paid for it. - ZK
@@TheSmokingTire wonderful to hear. Great job as always Zach. Always a pleasure to communicate with TST. Wish you all the success and growth in your channel in which you put so much dedication and time into.
Both cars had a good sound and tone. Glad they weren’t just straight piped and too loud.
Reminds me of your gc8 review from back in the day
Great Job TST
Polyurethane material for the transmission mount and the motor mount is the way to go. I noticed a difference in stiffness and less power loss while maintaining daily drivability.
I dunno, I think that's a great idea for the trans and diff since you get that shudder even on stock power, but for the engine I'd just put new rubber and maybe a torque damper. Keep your street car feeling like a street car.
@@nathanchildress5596 That's what I'm saying. Polyurethane does not transmit vibration like solid material does. All around polyurethane bushings and mounts IS street car oriented.
@@zstraps It's still a big change from OEM rubber though, you're going to feel the vibes. I prefer having stock engine mounts and then a torque damper, and poly mounts for the trans and diff.
I enjoyed this episode "comparison " videos
interesting message on that boat console
Back in 2001/2002 a company called Rob Green Motorsport did a supercharger and, if wanted, NOS conversion on the 350Z, Nissan South Africa got wind of it and tested one, they liked it so much that they did a deal with Rob Green Motorsport to convert new cars so they could sell them from the Nissan dealerships with a full warranty...
“The visibility is pretty good” had me rolling
Soho makes a great SC kit that uses the stillen kit but makes it A2A instead of the A2W it comes with and makes it a much better experience
SOHO is the best if you're going to go the supercharger route.
So what you’re saying is the car that’s been owned and sorted for 10 years was nicer to drive than the Craigslist special from 6 months ago?
It’s hard to compare the cars when one is sorted and the other is not. Also I noticed that harness flapping around over your shoulder in the second car. Something like that can do some serious damage in a crash.
The supercharger Z is a very mild build compared to the turbo Z. There is more hp to be had, but will need to put more work in upgrading the fuel pump, fuel injectors and a tune. The turbo Z is just a better build, much more thorough. Regardless, I do like the idea of the video.
R888s on the front? Aren’t those drag tires?
In town I feel supercharger. Wide open track/road. Turbocharger.
Give me like 3 years I'll show up with a 2012 Nismo with itbs and cams.. Show you true drivers joy!
First guy sounds like actor Charlie day from the movie horrible bosses lol.
Wow… the writing on the boat thoe 😂
Z owners watching this knowing the supercharged Z needs to change his fluids for sure but also they are both equally reliable depending on what supporting mods you do to supercharger/ Turbo/ TT but SoHo motorsports makes their own supercharger kit and they also make air-to air conversion kits for existing supercharged setups. Love both cars frfr V1 nismo is the best looking z34 for sure 🔥🔥🔥
I agree 100%. he probably needs some high temp differential fluid too
I'm like 11 mins into this video, and I have never seen a 370, 350, G whatever nissan on the FM chassis do what this mans car did at random. He REALLY needs to get that looked at. The diffs in those car fade out they do not randomly lock, they do not lock harshly, thats why VLSD are used so much by OE manufactures because they are predictable. He has issues he might have got screwed on that sight-unseen buy or something is in his pumpkin that needs to be adjusted so it works.
I was thinking the same thing.
That was an odd wobble for sure almost along the lines of mid corner lift off oversteer.
Unpredictability in a sports car is the kiss of death.
I had a similar issue in my car where I thought I had a bad diff or bad rack.
It made the car very unpredictable the more pronounced the weight transfer was.
The culprit?
A small bend in one of my front toe arms that could only be seen when laid side to side with an undamaged one.
Anecdoatal for sure and perhaps not at all what is going on with that Z, but that wiggle was sketchy and needs to get sorted out whatever it is.
yeah shouldn't viscous be more tame and mellow?
The fluid is probably toast. The insides might be knackered too.
Been driving supercharged cars since 2002 from age 21 with my dealer installed C5 Corvette magcharged Z06, 3 Ford Lightnings, A C6 Eforce Z06 and now C7Z06, a 2012 5.0 Supercharged Range Rover Sport. The 350/370's look cool and if not japanese I may have had one. Would like to try owning a turbo car one day though.
Anyway it is good y'all think this heat soak is a sure thing that ruins the car, makes no power etc. because it keeps used car pricing low for us that know better!
Great video and a big thanks to Jake and Alfredo for sharing their super-nice, souped up Z's!
Having owned an unmodified 370Z, the best thing remembered was the engine. Previously in a Civic Si, with all its HP with the engine screaming in the V-tec zone between 5,800 and 8,00 redline rpm, it never felt like it had the power it needed. The NA engine in the Z was so powerful and smooth by comparison, at least for a similarly weighted car. But the handling had issues. Even though it was rear-wheel drive and better than the Honda, it seemed like the computer was confused. Perhaps it was related to what Jack was talking about with the rear differential, but it also seemed be a traction-control computer takeover... at least from the seat of my pains. Because of my fond remembrance of the NA engine, my preference in an update would align with Jake, who seemingly just added a percentage to the NA's normal torque and HP curves. But wow, Alfredo's car is a rocket ship!
Not sure another Z would be in my future... Maybe when the new one is offered in a convertible :o)
Cheers from Charlotte, NC!
why do you need TC on an NA V6 with 300 hp anyway
@@MrWhitePerson The car was unwieldy without TC
@@justinmaccreery2490 your right foot has throttle control installed from factory
@@MrWhitePerson The car was ignoring my right foot with the TC on, and essentially unpredictable with it off. That was the problem.
I’m curious how overall cost & performance compares on these 370Z’s vs the new 400Z tune only….
Supercharged Z had what looked like a chasis mounted shifter.
Twin turbo Z has the shifter still mounted to the trans plus that Hebi Bebi.

I agree with the stock viscous is scary af on occasion
It’s a solid format
This should be a series as we see supercharger vs Turbo on different cars and let owners show off the builds.
I don't even know how this is even a great comparison, but I like it haha the supercharger car is not even on the same level as the turbo car regardless of power.
I have an e36 M3 that has been discussed a few times on TST and I'm debating between these 2 options.
I'm leaning towards supercharger for the ability to feather the throttle over waiting for the boost to shred the rear tires.
I sold my 350Z for an E36 M3 about 12 years ago. Loved the Z and it was supposed to have more hp (286 vs 240) but the M felt so much faster. But I do miss working on a Japanese car where everything is easy
@@HawaiianKong , I love the car. Had her since 2014, but now I'm scared to track her with the ballooning values of 100K examples.
Building a Honda for fun times and keeping the M3 for date nights and hard parking. I turned down a Euro engine for $3K in 2016, so now I'm wanting the extra power it would have provided.
@@TheDwightMamba you can get relatively close to Euro spec power with NA bolt-ons and a tune. Exhaust, throttle body, injectors, cams, M50 manifold. IIRC that will get you to about 280WHP. Probably slightly less expensive than a supercharger or turbo setup, and all of those mods would be beneficial anyway if you decide to go forced induction later.
Inline six engines always respond better to turbo's. How many people supercharge a 2JZ or an RB26? Nobody does.
I own a supercharged2003.5 E46 M3 6spd manual. I had it N/A for 4 years of ownership, then decided to supercharge it once I moved from sea level to 4000ft elevation. I have never ridden in a turbo’d E46 M3, but I do own a pretty extensively modified 2017 MK7 GTI 6spd manual too, which is turbo’d from the factory, but has an IS38 Golf R turbo with custom tuning and everything else.
I personally like driving my supercharged M3 more. Well, the M3 is just a much better car all around, but the supercharger gave it a lot more power, but it’s incredible throttle response wasn’t altered. The throttle response of the E46 M3 is one things that’s so good about it. I don’t feel like it needs more power (I have the ESS 525 kit). It doesn’t feel gutless down low. You don’t GM get the turbo shove like I do in my GTI, but I don’t feel like I need it. My M3 gets to 140mph very quickly as is that there’s no need for it to be turbo’d.
My E46 M3 was actually going to be on TST back when it was just Matt reviewing peoples builds. It was super unfortunate though because I drove it down from UT, and I stayed in my hometown in San Diego at my parents home. The day before I was going to head up to LA to meet Matt Farrah, my Dad and I went on a ride through some twisty roads, and the car bogged down. I didn’t know what it was. I thought the engine blew. It actually ended up being simple ignition coils blowing, but I didn’t have a scanner or anything, and the day after I was supposed to meet Matt, I was heading to Disney World for a week. It was while I was at Disney World that my mechanic checked my car out and found out it was the ignition coils that went bad, but that was after the time I was going to meet Matt. So I had to unfortunately tell Matt I couldn’t make it. I was super bummed. He was too. Since then, Matt kind of has gone a different direction with his channel. I’ve contacted him and Zach since to see if they wanted to review it, or my MK7 GTI, but I never got a response from him or Zach, even after I made an account with all my mods on the website they had connections with. Too bad. It would have been fun.
Supercharger= Switch
Turbo= Lever
Did anyone else notice that Jacob sounds a lot like Charlie Day?
This was awesome, keep at it Zack
