    Graeme my dear, you have just totally blown my mind! Your clip started with the piking tunes, then the Marlins sadly lost noses from the deeps as treasured items now encased in resins as keepsakes, and then you are sat open the cars boots edge with the tackle box, like Pandors jar once so gifted from my childhood! On the very day, and its gets better, so please bear with me, that despite some terrible weather, I had written as a mere youngster, to the Daily Fishermans Weekly, a prior questioned letter, of what to expect of Pike at Double Locks in Exeter, and if I'd need a bigger net sold to me, as no idea what a chum trail might involve, yet to unfold so later clearly. So prior to its publications printing, I ran to Derek of the Black Swan Angling, down in Dawlish, where Martin of later than Cofton Farms earlier acclaim, became a writer and photopgrapher for fishings weeklies readers monthlies Improve Your Coarse Fishing, and hell bent to any clement, or wisdoms, signs sent, I bought that 36" neck frames sleek black length, as an experiment. SO off we trot, the two of as sat, watching weeds like kelps or kelpies, withing the locks deeps traps, then realised this was no Richard Burton sent weed, its red tipped edges where a ball of Roaches Pikes heaven sent and entrapped live feed! So with roach pole and some baiting, we caught a few for unallowed livebaiting and yet good to rules, we did not dare, just marvelled at them in a tin, in a moments, wonderous, reflected in those red fins stare. We released them and plodded on with our deadbaits seesion, not a moments noticing, so much as a twitch or bob or movement, to our so pleasing in appearances lack of floats best quoted notions. Until along comes a wellied up, parker jackted fine gentleman, whose name I still remember, as his cast aloft lone spinner, called in the only frozen moments bar of peppered crocodiles existences depended upon toothy smile, for all to wonder of! Thus he showed us a Frosty Jacks own way that day, that a moving target was the way, and then suggested to my inquitives natures be, that I use that Toby spinner, sat within that very tacklebox upon your lap this day. He gave me a wire trace and told be to be bold and trust in its rolled silver trails own sway. So sent aloft I did and landed it, within the thickest deepest weed beds known limits. I counted it down, with a frown, then started to reel in, finding of course, buried so deep beneath that then scaffoldery, that it was set tight already upon the bottom, my one and only sea fishing lure, now consigned until its ruin. Until as others watched my rods strains attempted lack of its losseing, like my mind was not already Richard Burton, upon the gaze of onlookers Peasants zapped with heat rayed vision, until I, despite the air blue thrown frozen questions, of had I hooked the Double Lochs once famous Nessies cousin, responded gruffly and abruptly, that "Nah mate....its just the bottom as seems usual buddie!", as then so suddenly, with alarm I felt, the Leviathans miraculous, perhaps, first de-slumbered somehows, head shaken movement! Was this some Elder Gods quibbled dreams, I had so boldly cast unto, by happenschanced my way, without realisation, or was this, just a merest slip of chance, as the kinder elder had so said in passing, to "Now go catch Grandma!", as I let that clutches line strip, so far away, into the distances unmeasured, far reached destiny! Thus I reeled and reeled away, and found a pile of gigantic weeds entangled mess to my my my own and all onlookers, the drinkers, at their arisen maskless stations, from their outdoor tables dismayed visions! Just a new fangled age old mess. A Weedless lure may have curated best their prides chest, as then the Abyss sent weed raft, did cause a cacophony of pure man v natures best intent! So that net was worth the buck and every time I, did I tell about that day that maybe, did I, catch the monster or did it have a laugh, as far larger than the fishes size, is the surprise seen within each glimpsed, or hushed tones mention of, its effect upon yours and others tallest tales or cherished 19's....no na na no ninteens! As it weighed in at 18.75lbs and it took me, a since hooked of course, dedicated lure fishermans now devouted life, at least in dreams, 10 years to meet its River Runs Endless most majestics moments, in that single seconds, honest love, of that.... perhaps.... not so lone water wolfs radiances reflected sheens! As each lure casts splash, just may be...that tallest tailed of prehistoric evolutions wizardry! Or something else that Smelts that day, felt short of par with a spinning silver tobied bar of imitation, of some Roach set frees own shoaled best unJaHred well natured intentions!

    Here in the US, I've seen this exact formula EVERYWHERE for obtaining weights for muskie (if you don't know, muskies are the pike's larger American cousin). It's pretty widely known that the formula is inaccurate, at least in my fishing circle. It seems though that the emphasis is more on length of the fish instead of the actual weight when it comes to muskies.
    The videos are indeed TOTALLY AWESOME! The species and tactics are very different from what I'm used to in the States (truthfully it makes me giggle a bit to see y'all flinging maggots everywhere) but I've learned some invaluable stuff that can be applied to any fishing situation anywhere, for any species---in particular river float fishing---and of course the videos are just a plain joy to watch!

    Great video, very funny as per usual. Regarding the weight formula's I do agree with you when you said that particular formula was for maybe one fish species. If by chance someone that concentrated on catching a certain species, they could technically come up with a formula for that species. That's a whole new topic because I'm no good at maths :D. Again great video thank you for sharing TAFishing!.

    Revisited this to remind myself of lures. I am interested in your grip around the fish. I have only caught small fish but found that the grip you use didn't work for me. I was concerned that I would damage the fish. Is it just a matter of gripping it tighter or is there a feature in the fishes anatomy that you get you fingers round. Cheers and many thanks.

    Seems the girth length calculation may need adjusting for species. Divide by 800 for barbel, fine, but the pike obviously not. But dividing by 715 does work for the pike.

    What you need to do next is to work out a different constant for different species of fish. Divide 800 by the actual decimalised weight and multiply it by the lower weight it came up with for the fish which will give you a smaller constant and then you can do that for a few fish and take a mean average.

    I would think you would need a separate equation for different types of fish.
    A pike would be longer than a bass, and any girth would effect the weight over a longer span.

  • @MsCostantini

    Hi guys! Very nice video!
    Just a curiosity for you. Also wikipedia gives a formula (pike specific) for obtaining the weight of the fish from the length (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_pike). According to their measure the 39-inch pike should have been around 15.1 lbs. So wrong. Just for the sake of discussion... it seems very strange to me that a respected source gives an information so erroneous. Might be the case that for pike the formula works better in summer when they are ready for the bathing suit test, rather than in winter, when they tend to put up weight? The question next becomes: what is on average the weight variation for a pike between cold and hot season?
    I Need to find a way to catch the same fish twice in a six months spell to check it out...mmmm this might be tricky. :-)
    Thanks again for the videos!!!

I never buy fresh fish to eat from supermarkets so i sure as hell have never used them for bait before your vids! you ever find this a problem? or is it just usual that they are a bit manky?

      DTurboMark Never fished pike that deep,but I would not bother with the deep water.Around the margins up to 20 feet deep,5 to 12 feet ideal,especially if weed on the bottom .Maybe around islands if it has any,or near points of land/rocks etc that slope out into the water.Most of the baitfish will be around that depth as well.Good luck.

    Hi I'm from Newcastle Australia, I'm 14 and wanting to get a boat for my birthday, I don't have a dad so I don't know anything about boats for fishing, I was wondering if you could give me a few ideas what I should look for like what horsepower, the size for 2 people and yeah it would be really helpful!

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  10 років тому +1

      You don't say whether you mean freshwater or salt. For lakes a 12 footer with about a 4hp outboard should be enough to get you around. Take oars/phone/safety equipment. For sea work, minimum 17 feet I would say, which would mean a 40/60hp outboard. Best to get in touch with your local boat fishing club,they will give better advice as to what you are after. Might even have a junior section,but don't go out alone at your age. Maybe you should have a few trips out with adults,see what their ideas on boats are. Always think safety. I reckon you should try a boat club first.

    The formula is to generalized and thus not good to use because as you mentioned fish have different shapes! with that said, more specific formulas are derived from statistical growth data from scientific studies. W=aL^b , where a is species specific and b is an exponent that averages around 3 and various between different species with a b>3 trending more to larger girthed fish. There are specific ones for pike and I did a study on channel catfish that was pretty accurate based off previously recorded data and resulting function I found online. I would imagine to get very accurate, the data recorded and subsequent formula would need to be done either over the length of a year or for specific seasonal patterns. Flathead out of a wintering hole vs. One going into spawn might see a 10 pound delta on the same fish. Just one of the factors that needs to be addressed in these types of studies. Watching all the pike videos over again to get ready for pike season near me.

    It's down to Hooke's Law that the spring scales are accurate despite what most people think.

      THE9LOL7ABLE ---- You've got you physics and materials science mixed up there...

    • @THE9LOL7ABLE
      @THE9LOL7ABLE 4 роки тому

      @@Liofa73 Hooke's law is a law of physics that states that the force (F) needed to extend or compress a spring by some distance x scales linearly with respect to that distance. That is: F=kx, where k is a constant factor characteristic of the spring: its stiffness, and x is small compared to the total possible deformation of the spring. The law is named after 17th-century British physicist Robert Hooke. Source Wikipedia: Hookes law.
      All sciences tend to cross over at some point, I wasn't debating WHICH one was correct, but merely that this law (albeit more physics than "materials science") is why the SPRING balances were more accurate in their measurements than the other scales, in this small non-conclusive test. However, I do see why you would think material sciences are interlinked with this.
      Though the definition of Materials science is known as: The interdisciplinary field of materials science, also commonly termed materials science and engineering, is the design and discovery of new materials, particularly solids. Source:Wikipedia -> Material science 1st Paragraph. So I would say its more physics than material science but it really doesn't matter as long as we all learn.

    Hi there Graeme.
    Found a site the offered a formula L x G2 / 1400 for pike (www.campmanitoufishing.com/northern-pike-weight-formula.htm). Needless to say it completely messed up the weight. I'm thinking these formulas are area specific as well as species specific. If you measured say 10 fish along with their weights you could formulate a constant (the division part of the equation) specific for the species as well as area. It appears you are applying a generally accepted formula for brown trout to pike which may explain the error. (www.myoan.net/fishing/weight_calc.html) A quick calculation (20 minutes later) and I figure a constant of 707.5 with a 10% variance for pike. What you reckon?

  • @Anddosdd

    why dosent the pikes go to bite your hand when you measured them?

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  9 років тому +2

      They only eat fish,not people.They have no interest in biting you.Just that careless hands sometimes get knocked by a tooth if the Pike suddenly flips.

    Checking scales: weigh several known volumes of water in a plastic bag to compare the calabration of your scales and do the maths. Spring balance scales are only good in the middle of the scale range. There is some error at each end of the scale. We measure live length to compare fish sizes. A fish in roe or full of food will weigh heaver - determining fish size is not an exact science.

    Watching people pull loose, fully made up rods out of cars triggers me so much, even Mick Brown and Matt Hayes were at it in a video I watched yesterday. I pack everything away in their bags and boxes every single time unless its pitch black, torrential rain or minus and I make everything up on the bank. My buddy makes his rods up at home and says it saves him time but the reality is it doesn't catch you more fish, I can honestly say he has never caught a fish in the time it takes me to set up my gear.

    The measurement equation to find the weight of the fish has completely thrown me. How for instance would the calculator show a fish that was calculated to weigh 5lb 12oz? The calculator works in denominations of tens and not 16's.
    Lets say the calculator shows 5.12....that's 5lbs 1.2oz and not 5lbs 12oz. I hope you see what I mean? Do the ounces need to be converted using lowest common denominator?
    Regardless, it was a great show. Can you show us the correct way to hold the pike please?

    • @chrisfogg8018
      @chrisfogg8018 7 років тому

      Mike Williams 5.12 would be about 5lb 2oz. just divide 16oz by 10, so every .1 would be 1.6oz.

    Get yourself a calibrated 1kg or 2lb weight. You can calibrate these at your local weights and measures office. Once calibrated, check your digital scales with it. The point is to know how much over or under your own scales are. Once you know that, Bobs your uncle....

      @alanrtment porter i remember seeing it mate, the guide he was with looked highly embarrassed with no catches if i remember! Huge huge lakes and reservoirs in some countries can handle fish being taken for the table, but with Cormorants and otters, crayfish and pollution we in Britain simply can't afford for our fish to be taken for the table, there will be nothing left! Totally agree with you, just go to a supermarket or fishmongers if you're that desperate

      Sorry about the "Palava" ,but pleased you enjoyed the film. Congrats on your new P.B. its important that youngsters keep trying to better their catches rather than catch just one monster fish on their first trip.Always be pleased when you pass that target,particularly for young anglers just starting out.That's why we do all-round angling....gives us so many more P.B.'s to beat.

    The formula doesn't work because fish have different thickness and fatness to them. Also, the same fish with food in its stomach will weigh more than when its stomach is empty.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  5 років тому +1

      Precisely..that's why I am never impressed by weight-for-length formulas..having weighed fish and using the formula,they have never come out at what the scales really say...seems all the fashion to use nowadays though ,but I take it all with a pinch of proverbial salt.
