  • How to catch Pike on lures - Graeme Pullen from The TotallyAwesome Fishing Show interviews Pike lure fanatic Nathan Brotherton. As he reveals his TOTALLY AWESOME favourite lures, you get to see how some of his big lures look in quality HD underwater footage as the TA Cameras go submerged, and spot a couple of sulking predators to 18lbs lying right in the weedbeds. Lures range from the famous spinnerbaits, to shad raps, swimbaits and even rubber eels. Featuring tips on tackle, with a run-through of Nathan's favourite Jerkbait outfit, and spinning rig, plus tips on How to retrieve lures. No blatent tackle-ramming, but the basics on which lures have given big Pike specialist Nathan some of his best fish. We may even drag Graeme away from his beloved Twitching Sprat technique! (Doubt it).

    Hello G & M, since you’ve mentioned you get a small income if you watch the whole ad before your vlogs I have intentionally watch the ads. It’s abundantly clear that you both don’t try and push brands which I like!! A comment on a previous vlog mentioned donations. I look at it that I can go and spend £50-£60 on various books that will not even touch on the tips that you give up for free! So much appreciation and admiration keep it lads!!!!

    2 tips from a pike fisherman from Balkans: First the size of the lure matters pike will generaly go for a bait with a size up to 1/4 of his body everything larger will work on larger pikes and smaler ones will avoid it and. tip no2. is learn what the pike is feading on that will determine the collor of the lure you use. for me on the rivers i fish on the best bait seems to be with the apperence of a Bass, green with black stripes or black with green stripes i recently lost my star lure with that design and i felt heartbroken :( sadly the company that made it dosnt make that model anymore so yeah :) also if you see an obsticle in the water even in shallow water there is a 90% chance that there is a pike lurkin near it so grab a lure and go for it.

      SuicidalTendencies small pike will attack lures slightly smaller and the same size as them. I’ve seen a pike eating another pike that was bigger than it!

      All the rest sounds good aside from the size of the Lure section... Pike are very greedy little predators and will attack lures the same size as they are, in my experience I've had little Jack's of maybe 2lbs max attack my mctail (nigh on a foot long with tail) so yeah don't worry so much on the size

    Yes,that's stange about us over here.General freshwater scene here is that the majority of fisheries now require barbless single hooks when bait fishing.Yet for lure fishing if you want barbless you generally have to crush them down with pliers.Good point.I wonder why most lures don't automatically come with barbless,as trebles with big barbs are a nightmare to get out of the net mesh.I would like to see most lures sold with big singles,so maybe in the future we might catch up with you guys.

    Hello from Minnesota U.S. A lot of the lures featured in this video are U.S. muskie lures. Muskies are cousins to pike but you don't have them there. UA-cam search for muskie videos and some of what we do here for muskie will also work there for pike. Also sometimes spelled musky. Google search muskies too and what you learn from that will also work on pike. We have pike here too and catch them while muskie fishing. Good Luck!!

  • @RagnarrBjorn
    @RagnarrBjorn 11 років тому

    To clarify this a little for the 6 lures, we are allowed to use up to 6 hooks (1 lure = 1 hook) on up to 3 rods per person. In Canada, you are only allowed to run up to 4 hooks (1 lure w/up to 2 trebles = 1 hook) on 2 rods per person. When we run more than one lure per rod we do what we call “piggy backing”. This is where you hook the lures up one after another (with a bit of line in between them, to space them out) from tail to head.

    Generally 15lb line for me personally in an abrasion resistant mono,but others use 30lb braid.Wire leader is usually cabled(strands) and at least 30/40lb for teeth abrasion. I wouldn't drop below 12lb line as its asking for trouble.

  • @RagnarrBjorn

    It actually depends on where you fish over here in North America. Here in Michigan we can use barbed hooks everywhere except trout streams. Some states allow them and some do not. Some states also have a hook limit on the lures and/or they count the lure (its self) as one hook regardless of how many actual hooks are on it.

    I hope they never went in past the barb ! I try to crush all the barbs on my hooks for piking, and now for most sea fishing, leaving one with a barb as a baitholder. I've always been wary of loose hooks, so make sure you have the pike on an unhooking mat, and hold it very firmly, don't let it thrash around. If large, straddle it.And use long forceps. Keep fingers away from hooks.

    Line should easily be strong enough, but make sure you use a wire trace. I have heard people tying lures straight onto braid thinking it was tough enough. Do not do this. You must use a wire trace. See our vid on making a pike trace. Good luck with it.

    Nice to see a responsible pike fisherman.. I also am pike mad, and judging by his tackle we are alike, I have a 6 ft shimano rod and reel for light stuff with 80lb braid with a 40lb fox trace, a 6ft toothey critter rod with multiplier and again 80lb berkely braid, and a 14ft carp road with a shimano 8000 bait runner for winter dead baiting.. My landing net is a huge carp net with thick but small gaps.. anyway great Video. ps pike are the most vulnerable fish, care must be taken not to gas it up.

    Have no idea of the weight, it all came as one piece ? But you can buy grubs from places in the States that you just thread up a hook shank like a worm. The important thing is to make any grubs, plastic worms etc. hang straight. If you thread it into the bend of the hook it generally makes it twist up or rotate unnaturally.

  • @RagnarrBjorn
    @RagnarrBjorn 11 років тому

    For example when I fish on the American side of the St. Clair river I can use lures that have 3 barbed treble hooks on them and I can run up to 6 of these on one rod (if I choose to), but on the Canadian side of the river I can only run lures with up to 2 barbed treble hooks and I can only run up to 4 of them.

  • @avestak
    @avestak 11 років тому

    Hey bud, the premise was that we are playing catch and release. In catch and release, one would want to do as little damage to the fish as possible. But if you think it doesn't damage the fish noticeably, try putting one of the trebles you use for pikes in your own flash, then remove it the same way that you remove it from a pike and so verify your own statement. I like to see that video. If the fish is kept, that is another story.

    Our record for Northern pike is heading towards 50lbs and I would still be happy hooking up on my 15lb mono.The pike rod barely pulls 2lbs bent double so no chance of breaking the line if the drag is set right. A 30lb pike is considered a specimen,but still pretty rare.I've never even seen one.Many big pike are coming from our big trout reservoirs as the high protein trout diet lets them pack on weight.

    You can use the eel in both fresh water and salt water although it was designed as a fresh water lure but I've heard these things do well in the sea so why not, the only kinds of lures that are not compatible with salt water tend to be jerkbaits because they are carefully weighted to suspend in fresh water and with the water densities of both waters being different the lure will not work the same.

    I use 80 lb braid, this helps prevent the reel having a hairy fit when I cast the lure, means less birds nests and sitting on the shore untangling it. I use a really stiff trace (titanium is best) for jerk baits in the region of 60 lb to 100 lb test, this stops it wearing and breaking off. I also use with swim baits and other such lures 100 lb to 150 lb test fluorocarbon and the strength here is purely for the teeth (needs changed often though)

    Pike are long, Not usually heavy. You can use 20lb braid to catch them but you would prolly have to fight longer and make sure your drag is set right. I would recommend 50lb braid. Still as thin as 12lb mono and should bring in any pike you catch.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  10 років тому +1

      It should be provided its not after heavy rain which might colour it up. Canals run slow,so might take a week to clear again. If its clear, give it a go. Lures work well in canals,but try casting along the edges first, before you walk up to that area in case you spook any fish. You can cover a lot of ground by being mobile.

    I see barbs on all of the hooks. As much as I love the show and learn something new as you guys fish very different than what the norm is in North America, I have to say I am a bit disappointed about the barbs. A barbless hook can come out easy and causes less damage. Sure a fish might be lost here and there but we play sport fishing, aren't we? I use either barbless hooks or press the barbs down the shaft.
