I don't think Aurelio fears John's wrath. He knows he is clean. The "did you kill him" is just finding out if the storm is approaching, he's safe either way
Aurelio knows that it’s likely that John’s past would have likely caught up to him regardless of whether or not he had gotten out of the life. Most of the time it’s usually not IF someone with his reputation is targeted but rather WHEN. That said, even despite the fact that John got out of the criminal underworld, while some people would love to have the reputation of killing such an infamous hitman, his reputation would leave the cautious or the well informed to hesitate. Only the ignorant, the insane, the suicidal or the stupid would dare cross John Wick, and the lucky ones or the compliant are those who survive.
That “oh” is very loaded with meaning. On one hand he’s saying it as in “oh I completely understand your reason for punching him” and on the other he’s also saying “oh fuck my idiot son has just poked the most ferocious hell raising bear”
If memory serves, in all the John Wick movies, whenever someone hears his name, all they can say is “oh”. Even Viggo responds that way - even Iosef, who then has to hear exactly who John Wick is and what he’s capable of. Even Iosef, who evidently didn’t know the details, apparently knew enough, when he heard that the car he stole belonged to John Wick, to realize that he was well and truly fucked.
John Wick is one of those movies where it could’ve been one and done and been fine. It didn’t need sequels but I’m glad they got made because they didn’t disappoint.
It really is special. A typical revenge movie would have just had the Russian mobsters kill John's wife to motivate his killing spree but making it about them interrupting his grieving process so John can now take his rage out on a human opponent instead of the disease he couldn't fight and felt completely helpless against, elevates the story into something new and something we don't usually get in an action movie.
@@mrquirky3626 There's a video on YT (linked below) that makes another point - that while John is clearly the protagonist, he's built up like he's the antagonist. It has to be done in the right way, and the writers, directors, etc. NAILED it. ua-cam.com/video/d03ad5H1MkU/v-deo.html

I just noticed wicks respect level...not only does the whole shop look at him when he walks in but he actually gets personally dropped off at the shop by a bus.
It seems almost everyone in the underworld in that area knows that John Wick lives there. The police know him too. And they understand that if you treat him with respect he'll do the same and leave you alone. If you don't you probably won't live long. All except one spoiled punk and his little posse.
My Italian Father-in-law says he sold cars. One day he got his Cadillac stolen. He knew exactly where the chop shop was. He walks in with his keys, finds his Caddy, drives out and no one said a thing to him. Makes me wonder who he sold cars for.

@ 2:16 “You don’t own me punk. I work w/ your father.” A subtle way to let us know Aurelio is a man with his own empire. I’d like to see a spinoff focusing on Aurelio and his shop. A la Gone in 60 Seconds or Fast & Furious.
That kid clearly had no idea how the world worked. Ignoring the fact that his stupidity got his father's ENTIRE organization destroyed, he was so insufferably arrogant that he walked up to a boss in his own shop and started acting like he was tough shit. Like... kid, if ANY of you so much as scratched Aurelio, you wouldn't be walking out of that place
Him seriously saying “we own you” to Aurelio is almost laughable cuz he thought that would intimidate him but Aurelio knows damn well that spoiled arrogant lil brat doesn’t own shit his father does and he’ll be damned if he’s gonna be ordered or intimidated by a child like him!
I liked that Aurelio's interaction with Viggo was different, though. Yes - Aurelio is totally a man with his own empire, but he recognizes that Viggo's reach/empire is a notch above his...and Wick, on his own, has an even greater reach than both of them. It's a short pair of scenes that quickly sets up several things: Aurelio's got his own business, Aurelio's got balls of steel, but best of all...Aurelio's sharper and carries more wisdom than almost anyone else in the movie - seeing the bigger picture in seconds and adapting just as quickly.
@@jfarrar19This is basically it, one thing I noticed throughout the films was that Wick has respect for human life, he doesn’t claim lives Willy Nilly, once he notices his opponents are expiring he pulls back a bit. I’m honestly convinced that Aurelio is one of the few people who have seen the Monster that John Wick is. Hence the reason he’s more scared of John than Joseph.
I think it fairer to say he's one of the few people to have seen the monster, and lived. Many, many others saw the monster, but it was the last thing they ever saw. Iosef obviously didn't know John and had never heard of him. And Iosef had never stared Death in the face, until he looked into John Wick's eyes that night at the Red Circle.
What I like about this scene is the intentional framing. When John shows up to the shop, Aurelio has a stool pulled up and some nice whiskey ready. John sits with him - he doesn't remain standing. It shows Aurelio isn't just a business contact to him. This isn't him interrogating Aurelio - he legitimately just wanted to know if Aurelio had lied to the kid to get him to leave the car there. It would have been as simple as John just driving out of there. But Aurelio chose loyalty over cleverness. He would rather turn Iosef away, sock him in the mouth, and risk getting in trouble on the spot. He could have lied. He could have called Viggo and told him what Iosef did. But he didn't. Not out of fear - out of respect for a friend. Respect for a legend.
True enough, although I imagine that if Aurelio had done that, John would have his car back, but would then go after Iosef anyway. The theft of the car and the killing of the dog would not be fixed by the return of the car, not to mention the insult to John of the theft and killing. Iosef was a dead man the minute he walked into John’s house with theft on his mind. There are some things that you just don’t do.
@davidzasloff8797 I don't think the car was as important to John as the dog was. The car was just the final insult. If Aurelio had placated the kid to get him to leave the car, then turned it over to John when he showed up, it wouldn't have changed anything other than John getting his car back.
The incredible thing about the John Wick series is that it remains consistent throughout 1-4. The darkness, professional, calculated, and attention to detail is the same with all movies. It doesn’t change tone with humor, gore, action, etc. It’s just a masterpiece throughout. My favorite action series of all time. The attention to detail is just incredible.
Idk, JW4 was pretty silly imo, the magic suits that deflect bullets were a bit too over the top, to the point where I was thinking what's the point of using a gun if they're all just using their magic suits to block the shots? You can only suspend your disbelief for so long watching a film.
@@Binxalot I concur. The first movie at least nodded toward reality. John was a tank for absorbing damage, but things that should have injured him a lot still did. The succeeding movies get increasingly ridiculous, as John is repeatedly shot and stabbed, run into by cars, and falls off buildings, and not only survives but gets back up and keeps fighting. #4 might as well be a Loony Toons cartoon.
@@BinxalotWell I don't know about magic and stopping every bullet, it might've been unrealistic durability for armor of that weight but the fact it's acknowledged the shots still hurt quite a lot tells me the *energy* from the bullets still isn't being stopped completely The reason to use guns even if Wick has that suit on is that the velocity is likely still enough to be cracking bones, leaving nasty bruises at the very least. If he sustained heavy fire without killing whoever was attacking him quickly the armor would probably break pretty fast, and it would probably cause internal bleeding before it even got to that point
And this is when you start to realize that there is something off. You probably expected John to do something. But seeing Aurelio punch the punk and pour John a drink while talking respectfully to him, you start to realize we don’t know anything about John.
Aurelio's reaction to Iosef having John's car is the first hint that he's more than he seemed. This carries it a little further. But it's Viggo's reaction, his anger and fear, that really tells us Iosef f_cked with the wrong man.
@@danieldickson8591 The speech Viggo gives Iosef about just who John Wick is that is something that is normally done in movies to introduce the villian and show how dangerous they are.
The best nuance in this scene is Aurelio pouring John a drink, but John doesn't drink it until he hears Aurelio's story. Drinking it signifying he accepts Aurelio's non-participation in all that had happened.

When this came out a coworker went to see it and told me he didn't understand John's motivation. I just assumed he was a sociopath, because you'd have to be pretty inhuman and soulless to not understand.
It's a spin on a pretty classic trope. Instead of a retired action hero being pulled back into the life by the death of his wife/girlfriend, he loses his dog. Somehow it feels more vitriolic.

This is how you make a character of myth. All that Aurelio needed to see was the car. Out of all the high end vehicles in his shop, John’s is the one that caused the most emotion. The scene where Viggo is explaining to his son who John is, and the phone call with John….just peak character building.

My GOD, I love the concern in Aurelio's voice when he says, "Where'd you get that car?" It's like he's got aids or cancer in his garage and wants it out of there as soon as possible.
John Wick should be taught in storywriting classes. This movie tells so much without giving away so little. John's car is essentially a plot device to bring us to Aurelio's garage where we get indirect characterization for John from Aurelio by the secondary antagonist of the story, just amping up how much he's messed up and how important Aurelio knows that car is.
Dont get me wrong, its a great movie but its hardly some story writing masterpiece. The whole movie people do nonsensical shit just to advance the plot and/or to facilitate an action scene. Like, just the idea that Josef doesnt know who John Wick is stretches belief. We are constantly told what a legend Wick is and Literally everyone (even the random ass bouncer at the club lol) knows who John is but the son of Viggo doesnt? Shit, John had only been retired for a few years at this point. Josef would have in his late teens/early 20s when John was working for his dad. But he never saw him even one time despite him being responsible for Viggos whole empire?😂 He only doesnt know who John is because it suits the story. It really makes no logical sense.
I mean Josef not knowing isn't too surprising, the guy was kind of a moron even before killing Wick's dog and stealing his car. John Wick was an assassin so he wouldn't be seen much and why would he be going over to Viggo's place often I bet most of their talk was through telephones and Viggo telling Wick to kill some target. Josef looks like he's early 20's so he would know little about how all the things work under the table compared to someone like Viggo. Old man bouncer knowing who Wick is makes logical sense since he's been around for decades most likely based on his facial features and hair color and maybe he worked with him in the past at some point hence the offer from Wick for him to take the night off so he doesn't have to kill him.
There are two types of people. The ones you know how those world works . And the ones who are too stupid to see the picture. Aurelio knew what he was doing. Vigo son is just to stupid
Well it is serviced there, in the 2nd movie when he finally gets the car back and it suffers extensive damage he calls up Aurelio to fix it. Aurelio tells him it will take years because the entire car is basically destroyed from all the gunfire and such, but he'll do it because John really likes his car.
He may not have had alot of opportunities to show off what exactly he is capable of, but John Leguizamo is a fucking phenomenal actor. I have enjoyed everything he has portrayed way back to Spawn, he's just too good.
If you haven't seen him as Tybalt in Baz Luhrman's 1996 Romeo + Juliet, I highly recommend it. It is a phenomenal film, and Leguizamo's portrayal is absolutely execellent.
I love how much you can see Arelleo lose his cool before hitting vego's son because there like the very serious face when he asks if they killed him and then very quickly is like "you stupid piece of shit you probably just got me killed as collateral"
One thing I appreciate is that John could have killed Aurelio erroneously thinking he was involved with Viggo's Son's actions, but he meets with him, asks his story, and is calm the entire time. It really sells that while John is a deadly, *_horrifyingly dangerous man,_* he's also got a very strong sense of reason and frienship. Aurelio wanted none of John's smoke, and John respected that. Says a lot about both characters.
I like how John's reply is step by step when Aurelio asked John, what are you going to do. John gently finished his drinks, gently setting it down, then simply said "I need a ride". Shows how much mental capacity he has under such intense traumatizing events. Takes us some time to go through emotional stages. Not John Wick,on what he is about to carry out with emotional tranquility...
1. They broke into his home. 2. They killed his dog . (the last gift from his dead wife) 3. They put a ball-bat through the window (of what I assume was the wife's car) 4. They stole his car. That "Oh." was *SO* well-deserved.
If Aurelio had just pretended to work on the car to stall for time until John arrived, it would’ve resolved so much in the film. If I were John, I would've slapped some sense into Aurelio for not holding onto the car and tossed him a coin to deal with it. And that cheap drink he was sipping on didn’t help his case either
Viggo would understand the reason why Aurelio punched Iosef in the first place. Victor was wrong to believe that Viggo was not going to like Aurelio punching Iosef. That was not the part he won’t like, instead Iosef messing with John Wick was the part Viggo was not going to like.
The cool thing about this movie is they did an inverse of the save the cat trope to establish not only motivation for John but it provides a twisted form of justification for his actions. Its a beautiful piece of writing.
Keanu's monologue in the warehouse after Viggo's goons catch him, really clarifies what the killing of that dog meant to him, so we finally fully understand why he's doing this. That was the most intense and passionate performance I've ever seen from Reeves.
This is what bothers me SO much about the sequels... its an entire world living in sync with ours, and unless you're a part of it you'll never know... but the sequels have litterally THOUSANDS of assassins coming out of the woodwork, in that city alone... it was stupifying... let alone 200 people slaughtered in the airport alone and not a peep from law enforcement
Yeah that's a popular critique that I agree with too so my only head canon solution is that the amount of money that has to be floating around that ecosphere can just simply make anything go away. Everyone has a price.
First thing he does. Before opening his mouth. He offers John 'peace'. We know this after watching the second movie. I dont know if that piece of the lore was done before the first movie or added after the second. But we all know now, Aurelio offered John peace. John Accept the peace after the explanation, and only then. Then he ask for the car and Aurelio is obliged to give it. Details.
OK, Analyzing the scene; I don't think Aurelio really feared in the scents that he was going to get killed by John, but I see that he probably knows that John's Wife died, and on top of that; his dog was killed.(I know it's not stated in the movies that he'd went to the funeral, but seeing their interactions in the first and second movies. They seem more like friends, and Marcus (Willem Dafoe) literally another assassin came to check up on him. I would think Aurelio showed up) John may not be in the best of moods right now. I think he was scared that John wouldn't be rational about this.
Steal a man's car: you're screwed. Steal a man's classic car: you're double screwd: Steal a man's classic car and mess up his dog: you're being hunted. Do all of that to John Wick: you're dead where you stand.

I love it when Aurelio tells Viggo that his son stole John Wick's car and killed his dog and all Viggo can say is "Oh".
That's when you get the first hint of who John Wick really is. You can see the fear on Viggo's face.
Viggo was shocked because Iosef’s last poor choice would have him annihilated.
That “oh” is very loaded with meaning. On one hand he’s saying it as in “oh I completely understand your reason for punching him” and on the other he’s also saying “oh fuck my idiot son has just poked the most ferocious hell raising bear”
Right there he knew his son fucked up
If memory serves, in all the John Wick movies, whenever someone hears his name, all they can say is “oh”.
The first John Wick movie is still unmatched, such a great film
It started it all
John Wick is one of those movies where it could’ve been one and done and been fine.
NAILED it.

Noooo, Not A la fast and furious. Its enough. They saturated us with that franchise. I prefer Gone in 60 secs.
It's a short pair of scenes that quickly sets up several things:
Aurelio's got his own business, Aurelio's got balls of steel, but best of all...Aurelio's sharper and carries more wisdom than almost anyone else in the movie - seeing the bigger picture in seconds and adapting just as quickly.
Aurelio was about that action. Iosef was not the same…
I really dug that Aurelio had a bottle and a glass waiting.
He knew John was coming.

John L is a solid actor, for sure. The nuance in his performance in this scene is one layer out of many used to gradually reveal John Wick's character to the audience. Iosef was in the wrong to mess with John Wick and laughed at what he did since he believed he was a nobody, but he wasn't laughing when he got punched by Aurelio, scolded by Viggo, and killed by John Wick.

The doctor is John Wick in disguise
I’m honestly convinced that Aurelio is one of the few people who have seen the Monster that John Wick is. Hence the reason he’s more scared of John than Joseph.
I think it fairer to say he's one of the few people to have seen the monster, and lived. Many, many others saw the monster, but it was the last thing they ever saw. Iosef obviously didn't know John and had never heard of him. And Iosef had never stared Death in the face, until he looked into John Wick's eyes that night at the Red Circle.
This dude (Leguizamo) is such a damn underrated actor.
He looks at that car rolling into the shop like its a nuclear bomb with the timer almost up.
Too bad he is douchebag in real life.
"I tell you something he is going to understand." Love that line.
No, the consistent thing is that they all should have been dead or in jail by the end of each movie.
It does not😂
@@BinxalotWell I don't know about magic and stopping every bullet, it might've been unrealistic durability for armor of that weight but the fact it's acknowledged the shots still hurt quite a lot tells me the *energy* from the bullets still isn't being stopped completely
The reason to use guns even if Wick has that suit on is that the velocity is likely still enough to be cracking bones, leaving nasty bruises at the very least. If he sustained heavy fire without killing whoever was attacking him quickly the armor would probably break pretty fast, and it would probably cause internal bleeding before it even got to that point
"I sure as hell fucked up his dog!"
It was at this moment, Aurelio knew Iosef had fucked up HARD.

HARD is when Iosef came in with John Wick's car
IRREPARABLY is when Iosef admitted to Aurelio to killing his dog.
Aurelio has drinks ready 4 John, as if he's been expecting him. Such a good friend right there.
Everybody in his shop stops and watches John walk through when he shows up. Nuff said.
The absolute fear when Aurelio sees the car. He knew.

It's a spin on a pretty classic trope. Instead of a retired action hero being pulled back into the life by the death of his wife/girlfriend, he loses his dog. Somehow it feels more vitriolic.
The dog was a gift from his wife after she died. So he wouldn't be alone.
@@Harry-cm2io So he wouldn't be alone - and would stay human. This is how you make a character of myth. All that Aurelio needed to see was the car. Out of all the high end vehicles in his shop, John’s is the one that caused the most emotion. The scene where Viggo is explaining to his son who John is, and the phone call with John….just peak character building.
This movie was paced out really good from action to down time with world build and back and forth. Same with the 2nd movie.
However 3rd and fourth just seem to be all action and doesn't allow us to have that slow time to process it all.
Three and four also left out the part that made the movie really work, the relationship loss and pain John is going through.
Well 3 and 4 are taking place during a time where basically everyone and their mother are hunting John so it's not surprising

Time to start my John Wick marathon after watching this.
Just out of curiosity, did you know that there is a difference between right and wrong? Or do you hurt people whenever you feel like it?
Arilio didn't fear John Wick. He respected him. There is a difference. ✊😎
But he never saw him even one time despite him being responsible for Viggos whole empire?😂
He only doesnt know who John is because it suits the story.
You gotta admire the actor swift change from exasperation, to worried, to knowing many are screwed in a few short seconds
0:46 man what a nice looking bus ride lol

I remember watching this scene in the movies. When he told Viggo what happened and Viggo was like “oh” all the men in the theater broke out laughing
I love how much you can see Arelleo lose his cool before hitting vego's son because there like the very serious face when he asks if they killed him and then very quickly is like "you stupid piece of shit you probably just got me killed as collateral"
I like how John didn’t even change out of his bloody shirt. Just checked the garage and stepped onto the bus 😂
I love the mechanic over aurelio shoulder in the shot 2:29
I like how John's reply is step by step when Aurelio asked John, what are you going to do. John gently finished his drinks, gently setting it down, then simply said "I need a ride". Shows how much mental capacity he has under such intense traumatizing events. Takes us some time to go through emotional stages. Aurelio punching Iosef was truly acceptable. He did feel sorry for John.
That punch said, " Congratulations, kid, you just destroyed your Father's business."
One of the best scenes in the movie. John Leguizamo killed this role.
1. They broke into his home.
2. They killed his dog . (the last gift from his dead wife)
3. They put a ball-bat through the window (of what I assume was the wife's car)
4. They stole his car.
That "Oh." was *SO* well-deserved.
I love how this movie very slowly reveals who Wick is (till it explodes at the house scene)
What I like about this movie is....nothing. Thieves and killers who are not dead or in jail at the end. Why would I like this movie, again?
I like how the dude is in nice clothes and leather jacket acting like he's working on a car wiping his hands off on a rag.
John Leguizamo is amazing
If Aurelio had just pretended to work on the car to stall for time until John arrived, it would’ve resolved so much in the film. If I were John, I would've slapped some sense into Aurelio for not holding onto the car and tossed him a coin to deal with it. And that cheap drink he was sipping on didn’t help his case either
Why'd you have to cut it off at the best part? Where he gets the call.
Or, he asked him if he wanted to earn a coin
"Its wicking time" has to be my favorite lines from this film.
Viggo would’ve hand delivered his pos son if he’d been ANYBODY but his son. Even then he didn’t rule it out

Viggo would understand the reason why Aurelio punched Iosef in the first place.

"Have a good night Aurelio"
The cool thing about this movie is they did an inverse of the save the cat trope to establish not only motivation for John but it provides a twisted form of justification for his actions. Its a beautiful piece of writing.
Keanu's monologue in the warehouse after Viggo's goons catch him, really clarifies what the killing of that dog meant to him, so we finally fully understand why he's doing this. That was the most intense and passionate performance I've ever seen from Reeves.
There is something cool about this movie? Really? Thieves and killers? Gee, how cool does it get?
"I didn't kill him"
"Oh crap"
"I did kill his dog tho"
"OH SHIT"
This is what bothers me SO much about the sequels... its an entire world living in sync with ours, and unless you're a part of it you'll never know... but the sequels have litterally THOUSANDS of assassins coming out of the woodwork, in that city alone... it was stupifying... let alone 200 people slaughtered in the airport alone and not a peep from law enforcement
Yeah that's a popular critique that I agree with too so my only head canon solution is that the amount of money that has to be floating around that ecosphere can just simply make anything go away. Everyone has a price.
I mean, there's always the theory that John died at the end of the first film and 2-4 are Purgatory.
"Let me tell you something: he's gonna understand." Man he was the smartest character in the series
Long live John Wick!
Virgo and John know to listen to him. Doesn’t stop their warpath but shows just how much respect he’s give
As soon as Aurelio sees that car he knows there is a pile of hurt coming. They need to develop hushed character motor and have him involved
A little detail about this scene is when aurelio is pouring the drink on john the name of the drink is PELIGROSO "Dangerous"
That Chevelle did sound real good 👍
The way his expression changes so subtly walking is crazy
Steal a man's car: you're screwed. Steal a man's classic car: you're double screwd: Steal a man's classic car and mess up his dog: you're being hunted. Do all of that to John Wick: you're dead where you stand.
*security dude watching monitors, shaking* "uh sir, yea, Mr. Wicks at the door and uh, he doesnt look to happy."
