- 2001 Walt Disney's 100th Birthday. Richard Sherman sings Feed the Birds and It's Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.. at the Disneyland hub, in front of Walt Disney's Partners Statue.
It was an emotional experience for everyone there that day.... I know that Julie Andrews sounds amazing singing this, but that said, hearing it come from Richard Sherman... the way Walt Disney would have heard this song in his office every Friday, just feels like it's more from the heart.
Update: Myself and many around the world are very saddened to hear of the passing of this Disney Legend on May 25th, 2024 at 95yo. THANK YOU Richard for making the world a happier place with the music you and your brother Robert blessed us with.
The video is small, and blurry.. but what he says and the music is what's important and special here.
For those that want to skip to Feed the Birds, Richard starts talking about the song at about 5 min, the song itself is around 9min. Thank you.

RIP Sherman Brothers 1925-2024
Richard can finally play it again for Walt on Friday afternoons ❤ rest in peace 🕊️
RIP this legend
These legends have drifted in Disney history. So wonderful that technology allows us to feel those symtamental moments.
Rest in Peace, Richard Sherman
RIP Richard
I was working as a tour guide when this took place, and stood about 10' to the right of this camera for the entire performance.
The love this man has for his boss is immeasurable. Walt still lives in him...
The power of this song is such, that when I was a kid I didn't understand a word of it, but I could follow the imagery, and felt a deep sense of sadness. Now, I can't listen to it without crying.
Rest in Peace Richard M. Sherman (6/12/1928 - 5/25/2024) 🍞 🕊️ 🪙 💼
Now you’re finally reunited with your brother & music partner, Robert and your friend, Walt Disney.
Mary Poppins is probably my favorite Disney movie of all time. I grew up watching the movie over and over as a kid, and a little while back I got to play a chimney sweep in a community theater production of Mary Poppins. Rest in peace, Mr Sherman. The music you and Robert wrote has touched kids and adults. I know you and your brother are writing music again.
Songs that defined my childhood from the scores of Mary Poppins to Jungle Book to legendary rides like It’s a Small World The Tiki Room and so many others. What a giant and what a beautiful soul. We will continue to feed the birds in your honor.
Ive been lucky to go to Disney Orlando twice .. the first time i went i walked with my young sons to Cinderella s castle , touched it and cried ... for me it was so moving being there with my boys ...we had a Magical 2 weeks each time we went ...i hope that one day i can go back there before i leave the earth forever...
A song about how it does not take much to give and be kind, even when you have "tuppence". A beautiful piece. 🧡
And Walt was smiling down on you Richard as you sang his special song one more time.. for his birthday 💗🎁
Walt fed his birds (us) with his movies, cartoons and TV shows...thanks Mr.Disney, we are full....
are we?
You understand the meaning :) ♥
Richard Sherman is a class act and, in everyone’s opinion I’ve heard, a gargantuan talent. In the words of the songwriters of the new Mary Poppins film, he and his brother were touched by God. I’m not religious but I think they’re right.
This song never fails to make me cry
Walt Disney, one of the greatest person ever born.
When The bird flew over the piano I was just bawling
I cant see it please help me find it
Walt Disney would be proud and laughing one of his favorite songs ever he may be gone but not forgotten still going strong god bless you guys thanks you guys rock way to go I'm left speechless one of my favorite songs ever and also love and appreciate you guys thanks you guys rock way to go !!❤❤😂😅 Joe
Check out starting at 8:42. In the background, you can see birds flying.
Grateful to finally see this. I met Richard in 2014 at a 50th anniversary for the Tiki Room. He told the story about this moment and the bird landing on the piano. I'm sorry we didn't get to see it, I imagine it was out of the frame but the fact we could her one chirping means it was somewhere within range of his microphone. I think Richard said it was on the other side of the piano itself.
I was there that day, right up front, surrounded by Cast Members watching the show. The bird never landed on the piano. Toward the end of the song, the lone bird (FYI - a bird release was not a part of the show that day) flew up from around the Frontierland area, then stopped and hovered directly over the piano for a few seconds as Richard Sherman played. Although the video doesn't pick it up, the moment the bird hovered, there was a collective audible gasp from the audience that Richard hears and responds to at the 10:33 mark, where you can hear a little clapping too. A-freaking-mazing!
@@ashpsyche Thanks Bret! Congrats on being there and thanks for sharing how it happened. That sounds awesome.
Where would this world be without the Sherman Brothers. I would sing "Colonel Hathi's March (The Elephant Song)" to my kids when they were little crusters.
My kids LOVED that song and I'd do the same as I'd chase them up to bed, "HUP! 2-3-4 Pick it up! 2-3-4". Ahhhh... good times. Then they have to go and grow up. ;-) :-D
Thank you for posting this video. I was there standing in front of what is now Jolly Holiday Bakery. It truly was an emotional beautiful experience. One of my top favorite moments in my Disneyland career.
We were standing in just about the same spot! It was a beautiful moment, really. :-)
Did anyone else notice a a bird was tweeting throughout feed the birds?
Richard mentioned this in a behind the scenes of Mary Poppins. He was told that just toward the end, out of the clear blue sky. There was one bird who flew down over where Richard was playing and off again into the clouds. He said it was Walt Disney saying thanks.
thabigben1 PLEASE don't tell me I'm not going to see that bird in this video...it was shown in the bts
in bts I clearly heard the audience was awe STRUCK !! "OH" "AAH" etc. very emotional
Blurry or not, the video is priceless i enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you for posting!
A singing voice made beautiful by all the love, history and magic behind that song and that film.
This song makes me want to cry. I learned the spanish version, because I'm a spanish speaker. But no matter which the language it is, it still touches my heart. Tuppence a bag 💕
Me too
An incredibly beautiful song. Very special.
I cried so much....
Playing it one last time for the Old Boss.
Feed the Birds @ 8:57
What a beautiful memory.
UPDATE: 2023 ... here's a beautiful version of the song he did in front of the Castle in 2015 for Disneyland's 60th :-) ua-cam.com/video/e5OCH90JXJY/v-deo.html
I will always love this song

I love Mary poppins It is a amazing film I think of My Teacher mr. Rank and how the kids were mean to him I was the only one who cared and I also think my Grandma Jan is similar to Mary Poppins she and I draw and paint together and I think of how imaginative she is and when my Grandma had a bakersists in her
Leg and when Gradpa got sick with a enmounia It was difficult to watch
I swear there’s a time where he played this song and a bird landed on the piano and stayed there till the song ended. Anyone know where the video is?
It was shown in the making of Mary Poppins.
I AM LOOKING FOR THAT TOO ! It would seem this is the only birthday he played that song ! And it doesn't appear registered !! I remember a collective *gasp* from the audience that I did not hear in this video ! I must be wrong he MUST have played it at other Disney celebrations ! I want to see that whole performance ! Disney still is there and I play it for him I believe that this whole thing is SO WEIRD !
Crying
110 coming up

That song is my favorite song

I can't find the bird in this video. Who knows when it appears?
I dont see it. Are you sure?
@@vexliar6235 Oh it's fine. I've been trying but can't seem to see it. But thanks for trying anyway. 😁
It's out of frame, if you watch the making of Mary Poppins, it's shows it.
@@Thomas_H._Smith Ok I'll look for it there. Thx
9:40 top left corner
Where is that bird? When does it show up?
You can't see it on this shot. It flies below the camera shot. You can see it in the Making Of Marry Poppins documentary at the end when Richard Sherman talks about it.
There another bird as well 9:40 top left corner
Mr George Banks lost his job in the bank?
😰
nice
This movie is a classic Disney or not it has all the quality that made it a classic. To have remade that movie was a insult to Mr Disney and to the original cast. There was a lot of hard and ground breaking work done on this movie and in the end it all paid off for all of the people involved in the movie and for Mr Disney. And I don't mean just money wise either.
But it was NOT remade. It was a new chapter in the books. Give it a try and see what you think...
