    I listen to a ton of prog metal pretty much on the daily, and I'm able to follow most of the structure even through 7-8 minute songs.
    AAL's music continues to be the exception upon which my brain just switches off and doesn't even try to comprehend the dizzying onslaught of polymeters, polyrhythms, time signatures and metric modulations coming at you all at once - especially when the totality of it still grooves and blends together into deceptively ordinary sounding music.

    • @jacobmcdonald2907
      @jacobmcdonald2907 2 роки тому

      I know it seems insane to be able to memorize everything so precisely. However, it's 80% (if not more) muscle memory. Yes- it requires even the best to still play multiple hours every day, but to answer your question- that's how it's done. Muscle memory and tons of practice. I started playing piano when I was 8, currently have just over 20 years of professional experience playing and composing classical music at a level I used to believe I would never achieve. It's a little hard to explain, but at the most difficult levels of playing, each song/track/piece etc. becomes just one single, fluid motion. Less thinking, more feeling.

    Favorite section is when they go into the heavenly sounding dirtyclean part and he uses all the cymbals and shit. It just sounds so pure and open, love it.

      That's the Tama First Chair Series, domed, with no back rest. I have the hydraulic version, and it is amazing. I know a guy who claims his entire drumming career was saved with that very throne. He was suffering from severe back issues from his nightly gigs, but somehow this throne, after having tried many different ones, somehow remedied his pain. That was over ten years ago and he still gigs.

    I'm not surprised to see @2:46 as the most replayed here, because what the hell even was that? That cymbal pattern is so strange and cool, plus the tricky kick pattern. How does one even come up with this stuff? Kudos.

    • @StephenChapman
      @StephenChapman Місяць тому

      Totally agreed. I've listened to a loooooot of prog, metal, jazz, fusion, etc. over the past few decades and I've never heard a drummer play a passage quite like that before. It's such a cool part compositionally! I absolutely love how the guitars are basically playing a supporting role to the drumming in that section.
      As a random aside, there are a bunch of key moments in drumming that stick out to me like that -- patterns I've only heard once, etc. One such moment is in the song Reconnect by Sevendust. Here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/G7SyCc2U8_Q/v-deo.html
      Start the song at 1:57 so you get a feel for the timing, then listen to what he (Morgan Rose, the drummer) plays at 2:07. I fancy myself a pretty good air drummer, lol, but for as slow as that part is, the half-time feel high hat pattern along with bass drum throws me off every friggin' time! It's such a sick part, albeit brief.
