Like yeah, this isn't insane at all, even I, guitarist myself, could play it on drums with 90% precision.

Yea no that shit looked simple but I feel like there's a lot of subtleties I couldn't catch at first listen/glance. Also the fact he's calmer than fucking Buddha making it look like a walk in the breeze might be misleading. Who knows tho. I've been out of the drum game for a minute now, so. Still rocked.
@Lane Grimes As a drummer myself, nothing in this song is extremely difficult, it’s mostly the jazzy phrasing. Most of the patterns in this song aren’t insane, but the way they are arranged is, like the pattern between the stack and the floor tom. Idk how much experience the guy above you has, be if they have a few years of experience playing drums, they’d be able to play along(maybe not everything that Matt is doing, but playing something that works). My point is that there isn’t a need to be pretentious, saying they probably can’t comprehend it. I love the drum part, but I’m terms of AAL difficulty it’s not that high up there.
@Lane Grimes I'm aware of Danning Cruger effect (forgot how it's spelled correctly), but I'm playing guitar like 10 years, and 4-5 of them were alongside a good drummer. I never really played myself, but I wrote drums for drummer, so I really see all interesting stuff etc. This song is interesting, and maybe hard to remember, hard to adapt to the rhythm, but it's not hard mechanically. You're playing drums 10 years? Spend one week and you'll master this song.
One can only hope the house he painted, right before this jam, was as beautiful as his playing.

@@disco4535 Totally fair enough. On this track he’s not necessarily breaking ground, but he has on SOOO many other tracks with other groups as well. He’s grown exponentially since the start of the pandemic almost showing everyone “yeah, I’ve been practicing A LOT during all this shit.”
I’ve also just probably got a soft spot in my heart for this style of playing as well, but you can’t disagree that his playing is 100% TOP TIER. 👌
And besides, he’s still young and has a lot of growing left to do.

Edit: Apparently they changed the sound so now it sounds waaay better.
Yep, the drum mix was really punchy but pretty quiet overall. Loud transients but pretty muted body.

@@shaxs7068 I just think they should make the drums audible in the drum playthrough, I can barely hear the ghost notes and I think at least in a drum playthrough all the drumming should be audible
@@tomfson8609 In many productions, not to mention all, the ghost notes are never heard. I invite you to listen to many songs with the battery isolated from now on and you will see that the ghost notes make the song something different from what you hear with the song as a whole.
@@shaxs7068 My point was just that I can hear the drums better in the original song than in this DRUM playthrough. In most of their songs you can hear the ghost notes very well

@@iAutodidact well I know with the monomyth nested tuplets type stuff he just used metronome against each other to feel what 5 would feel like inside of a relative group of tuplets or whatever and just played to that till he had it down
@@TheLemonKiller this is actually the only tune that we have done that never had programmed drums. It was all played in the moment and refined over time.
This record is going to be on HEAVY rotation. I love what has been released so far. And I really want whatever that ride cymbal is.

I feel like this is somehow more precisely played to the album/record version than the Monomyth one, and this song feels more jazzy/loose where Monomyth feels "tighter/more rigid"

There’s enough said about how good Matt is on drums. I’m going to take another route and say that dude is hilarious and I would love to kick it with him. Metal Matt is amazing and his outfit here is hilarious. I appreciate his humor as much as his playing.
The funny thing about being insanely good at what you do is that you can kinda look however you want
I saw him at a Tesseract show when the show was over. I so badly wanted to say hi, but I feel like that's rude and intrusive. Plus there was already beginning to be a bit of a crowd as other people recognized him too that and people trying to get to the exit.
The intro sweeps sound like rain drops to me and the crash symbols represent waves crashing in the ocean.

Edit: After listening to this on a sound bar instead of a phone, it sounds pretty good. It just seemed like instruments such as the stack and the grace notes were not present, also seemed diffent than Monomyth. Love it Matt. No mean critique I promise :)
