This is great. My question is this. I know the Marines are the least 'diverse' of the service branches as regards soldiers of color, and, by the way, diversity is much more than just having some black people around for the white people to practice on, but this band does not appear to have any people of color at all. I applaud the many women, which is good, but... Is it because getting to this level of expertise is kind of like getting a college scholarship or a pro contract to be a D1 softball pitcher or track athlete, which means you had hundreds and hundreds of hours of tutelage under expensive coaches, many trips to expensive summer camps, travel teams and finally, opportunities to star at a first rate university or college? I don't get it. Or, maybe I do get it. I am a retired librarian and university library administrator. I spent my two decades-plus tenure as an East Coast state university library director and it was nearly impossible to recruit African American librarians to the places where I worked. The Library Association didn't do enough to recruit and mentor people of color and Latinx ancestry to permit young people of this tranche of society to feel accepted, welcome and normalized in what had been traditionally a very un-diverse, professional environment. Next time you run into the chairperson of the physics department at your local college or university at your local supermarket ask them about minority recruitment. They might run away from the meat department, where they were contemplating a standing rib roast, to the pharmacy, for some Pepto. Maybe the Marine Band, for many reasons, has the same litany.
Hello, a professional string player here. As a person of colour who lives in a country of diverse races (Canada), I do notice some tendencies; there are a lot of musicians of colour who play the string instruments, but ratio wise not that many who play the wind, interestingly enough. There are coloured string players who are part of The President's Own band in US - ua-cam.com/video/CHzsje_WDG4/v-deo.html&ab_channel=UnitedStatesMarineBand I do believe that the legimate issues you are raising have been surely discussed in the music scene and nowadays in the American continent, most orchestras/ensembles do blind auditions therefore no prejudice likes of colour can be at play. Therefore today, could it be that the diversity or non-diversity is simply a result of something as small as the total number of musicians from certain races playing certain instruments..?
Wow the military bands are probably the only apolitical thing left in America. And thank god for that! Music truly is the universal language.
Happy Independence Day, America.
Happy 245th Birthday.

A message from a grateful American Patriot
Thirteen bald eagles are born every time the grandioso is played by the U.S. Marine Band.
Played this a thousand times and heard it another thousand and it still gives me chills.

Great performance, but very curious to post it more than three years later, given that the director got promoted to 0-6 in 2017.
