As a former bari sax player: I'm am AMAZED by his lung capacity. Not only to play that beast of an instrument, but to dance like a madman at the same time. I thought it was hardcore to march with a bari.
To me, for having played clarinet, the difficulty is not the quantity of air, but the quantity of *oxygen*. That makes it even more difficult if you move like that.

I played tenor in school and church and I gotta say this dude is absolutely wild on that bari to be moving that much and playing that well. "honk of fog horn magnitude"... "here we gooooooo"...
Yeah, I had perfect intonation on the bari, so it's kinda hard to listen to it in most songs that butcher it, and while this guy isn't great when he's still and slow like at the end, I probably couldn't sound as good while moving. And two more things people don't point out, while moving that much, your mouth, and your reed, is getting dry, and it'll make it sound worse and is harder to control. Second, the fact he can hold the thing up while moving like that obviously takes a lot of practice. He's holding the whole thing up with his right hand most the time. The neckstrap helps but not for tone.
The movement is part of his performance in general and a large part of what got Too Many Zoos on the map in the first place, imo. Music isn't *just* about making notes from an instrument. Spectacle is important. It's the difference between being good and great.
@MD-zo7cl I dont know if youve ever seen drumset music before, but overwhelmingly its literally just a scribbled line on each beat which indicates "Improvise." Usually the only noted parts are ritards or syncopated sections. Any jazz drummer knows this very well, its quite rare for there to be actual defined written pieces for drumset. Orchestral percussion is a whole other story, and who knows maybe this percussionist got lucky, but it isn't what happens normally.
I remember watching a video from like 5 or 6 years ago of this dude and his drum mate in the subway of NYC doing the same badass routine. So cool that they're playing on stages now

Honestly, it's nice to see the shows of fun, passion, and reckless abandon that's coming back out of instrumentals. Classically trainer saxophonist as well. There are some interesting techniques here but IMO, those large jumps from high to low aren’t super hard on a bari. I mostly see it as gimmicky. He’s got a couple licks but for me they get old quick. And he dances around while doing it and people respond. He may be a very good player, but you can’t tell from this necessarily.
Alto saxist here, I have a MASSIVE respect for bari saxes. Not only is your instrument crazy heavy, it's also got wild fingering.
Ex Bari sax player here. That guy has mad skillz.
It’s not about lung capacity, it’s about being able to inhale enough during a sixteenth note rest.

Dirty donkey is a new level
Yeah, I had perfect intonation on the bari, so it's kinda hard to listen to it in most songs that butcher it, and while this guy isn't great when he's still and slow like at the end, I probably couldn't sound as good while moving.
And two more things people don't point out, while moving that much, your mouth, and your reed, is getting dry, and it'll make it sound worse and is harder to control.
Second, the fact he can hold the thing up while moving like that obviously takes a lot of practice. He's holding the whole thing up with his right hand most the time. The neckstrap helps but not for tone.
@@jonskillings1258no shit that wasn’t perfect nothing that mega sassy dirty donkey would be that’s why it’s great
It’s subtle but it really completes this video 👌🤣💯💕
The movement is part of his performance in general and a large part of what got Too Many Zoos on the map in the first place, imo. Music isn't *just* about making notes from an instrument. Spectacle is important. It's the difference between being good and great.

@@MD-zo7clit takes a lot of skill to achieve that level of dynamic balance. Reading music is not just looking at a page. I am speaking as a drummer.
He was going off too
@MD-zo7cl I dont know if youve ever seen drumset music before, but overwhelmingly its literally just a scribbled line on each beat which indicates "Improvise." Usually the only noted parts are ritards or syncopated sections. Any jazz drummer knows this very well, its quite rare for there to be actual defined written pieces for drumset. Orchestral percussion is a whole other story, and who knows maybe this percussionist got lucky, but it isn't what happens normally.

Honestly, it's nice to see the shows of fun, passion, and reckless abandon that's coming back out of instrumentals. Classical, jazz, soul, r&b, even swing and metal are all getting this influx of young instrumentalists who find delight in showing their enormous talents and to make it even better the older artists are rediscovering that delight as well!❤

I know I sound like sour grapes but I honestly find it repetitive and boring.
@@fowlplayoutdoors68 I hear you , but he's supported himself for years as a working musician, and it's hard for me to criticize anyone who's done that, especially since the pandemic. He originally made a living by busking, and had to develop a style that would catch the attention of people who were busy and not musically educated. And he's opened doors with that, including playing on stage with Beyonce at least once. Is he the Tarrega of saxophone? No. Is he making human-created acoustic music cool in the eyes of the public? Yes.
