The American Psycho Rolex DateJust: Best Everyday Watch For Success
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 вер 2024
- What do Martin Luther King Jr., Ronald Reagan, Patrick Bateman, Genny Savastano and me all have in common? You might have guessed it from the title - yes, the humble DateJust!
In today's video I revisit this classic, which I have owned many times, particularly the reference 16013, which was famously worn by Christian Bale in the movie adaptation of the novel American Psycho. Its appearance in the movie was a watershed moment for the historic and evolutionary Rolex watch, and in recent years it has become the best true luxury, do-it-all watch under $5000.
Why did Bateman wear it? How has it become the status symbol so many aspire to own? Why is it so important beyond its image, infamy, and allure? How have my perceptions changed after not owning this watch for a while? Join me to find out answers to all this and more, as we delve a little deeper into the dark side of the Rolex DateJust.

The two-tone and that three-stripe Adidas jacket.... The Italian side is coming out strong. LOL
Or his secret inner Slav
"Don't just stare at it, wear it!!"
*Bateman telling himself to wear his Datejust*
Sweet apartment TGV. That intro's writing/imagery . . tongue-in-cheek perfection my friend.
Of all of the watches I’ve owned, my 1985 two tone, champagne sunburst 16013 is the most recognized and commented upon. Everyone seems to recognize it immediately. They’re not always sure of the model, and certainly not of the 3035 movement, but nearly all seem to acknowledge that it is something special. A universal cultural icon far beyond the realms of horological significance.
You are right .. I own the same watch
Don’t touch the watch
I have some video tapes to return
I literally laughed out loud at TGV's reaction to that... perfect.
Paul Allen and Hugo have 8:30pm reservations at Dorsia.
Great sea urchin ceviche.....
Its cranapple
This made me rewatch American Psycho with my wife while wearing my old 2-tone datejust 36mm. The part where U avoid weightlifting so your wrists stay skinny enough 4 small watches was hilarious! These tiny watches do look amusing on thick wrists w/ muscular forearms. Great vid yet again TGV!
It’s a seiko in the movie
@JAyy781 it's actually both ..
Your channel dropped off my radar for a while (good old UA-cam algorithm), and boy am I impressed with how far you've come with production and the intros. Really enjoying the new content. Thank you.
You mean you're not a subscriber? :O
Bought mine in the late 90’s...with a Roman numeral champagne pyramid dial. Classic, elegant, versatile, and a keeper.
Are you describing yourself or the watch? Good taste my friend!
@@matthewturner7691 WHOLESOME
I got my 16013 in the 90's as well when I was young & cocky , then I got 116200 as a wedding gift from my wife at that time but my go to watch for some reason is a casio G shock ! not sure why maybe because I like it but I don't think I have to worry about negative attention from shady people when I wear it.
Im Late 👀😂 but would y’all go with this Date Just or with a Vintage Day Date?
omg this is the best intro ever! So glad you took the “you sound like patrick bateman in some intro” to a whole new level ;) great vid
This was incredibly well put together, absolutely something Patrick Bateman would be proud of.
The watches on the eyes killed me lololol
This intro is pure kino. I had to rewind it 3 times before watching the vid. Thanks so much for this channel.
I love the Rolex Datejust, that's going to be my first Rolex watch
Great choice! cant go wrong... I made the same choice and never looking back!
You get one yet?
@@juilliandavis7802 oh no, not yet. Not with current prices. I have been looking at vintage ones, but really want a modern one. We'll see time will tell when I'll be able to get one
You will get one brother! Work hard and save. Cheers!
This is the 5th or 6th video I've seen of yours so far; your intros are always great. I'm so glad yt started recommending your channel; I find the videos to be entertaining, as well as informative. I love movies, and I too look at what watches are used in tv shows and movies. Anyways, nice job!!
That intro was so good hahaha. Great to see you parody one of my favourite films of all time. Great Video!
My dad has been wearing a 16013 since the year was born. He bought it new at Govberg in Bala Cynwyd for $1600. This (his) watch is basically why I love Rolex. I still think it's the classiest watch I've ever seen.
The only thing missing from this video is you having a breakdown on the phone, "Tonight I just had to buy a lot of watches!"
Totally killed it with that "I have to return some videotapes" reference. Bravo!
Your production quality and content has improved significantly
This is by far your funniest intro. Absolutely loved it. Satire at its best.
Ahh..just in time for my weekly Phil Collins discography discussion.
Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite. ;-)
Thank you my friend,
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry You like Huey Lewis and the news?
You know it's hip to be square...
SlayerRock4ever who also wore a steel datejust, I know because I sold it to his then wife Gill
Great video TGV, that intro was pure class 😜 I have to be honest, I’ve never liked these - especially in gold - but it suits you down to a tee. You wear it so well!
Thank you so much sir! I respect the positive vibes.
Best regards,
TGV
The most shocking thing about this intro is that TGV is 36. He's always been ageless. He looks and feels both 16 and 50 simultaneously. Hearing a real age feels like unlocking s secret.
"I've got to return some video tapes" and the little pause nearly killed me LOL
Just ordered an homage of this watch because of your last American Psycho video. Now waking up to this... just absolutely perfect. Thank you TGV for reviewing my grail watch.
This intro is amazing I love it!
I've actually recently finished reading American Psycho for the first time despite seeing the film long ago. Wow. What a great intro, TGV. Pure mastery as always!
Paul "Red Adair used a Rolex throughout his career fight Oil well fires and blowouts. It might have been the date just? And it was gold. There is a Rolex advertisement with red Adair. I think he chose Rolex for its precision time keeping. Accuracy makes sense when you have to explode a charge over a burning Oil well to smother the flames so you can fit a control head to cap the well.
Nice Katana in the window! I have two myself from SBG Swords.
" I have to go return some video tapes." Great ending to a great video!
I haven't been watching ur content in a few months and I have to say the quality of ur videos is through the roof man!
Great video TGV now I am gonna watch American psycho.
Hello TGV, great video on the Datejust. The introduction to the video was clever. ⌚️⏱
Great, great video! I enjoyed this as much as any I've ever seen you make.....
I've been wearing Rolex watches for 40 years and gave my older watches to my twin daughters about 5 years ago.
Due to my 8" wrists, I FINALLY got around to buying a couple of Date-Just-41' over the past year.
I currently own Explorer-I's & II's. I also bought a 2018 BLRO-GMT as well as a Ceramic-white-dial-Daytona; but gave those to my son.
The Date-Justs are simply a pleasure to wear 7-24-365....I love the case profile so much.
I truly could be happy with only the Date-Justs.
Thanks again and have a nice weekend.
The first two minutes of this video were superb and totally priceless. Concerning Rolex, the original Explorer is still my favorite - reliable, dependable, conservative, and a virtual logo for the brand that defines simple horologic excellence the world over.
I love mine. Many watches have come and gone for me including pricier Rolexes, but I just can’t let mine go.
That intro got you and insta-like
That intro though!! Gotta love it TGV! So incredible to see how far the channel has come over the years my friend, well done and congratulations, you completely and utterly deserve it!
Hope you are well
Regards from Down Under!
Ben
This is so weird I just watched the movie again two days ago
I just watched it yesterday!
"have to return some video tapes" excellent movie reference there, and great watch!
That intro was amazing TGV! I really like your sense of humor
I’ve been on the list for a while but my last visit to the AD felt great, I think it might actually happen this time, so I’m binging a slew of datejust videos, this is one of my fav’s so far. Thanks for your tireless work entertaining and educating us TGV
I just bought myself a Datejust reference 16013 from 1985, in two tone with a tapestry dial, as a commemoration for getting a new job. Literally a month ago. I found your channel searching UA-cam about it. Good timing (excuse the pun)
I love it
you will enjoy it for years to come, I have the same watch an it will hold its value at the least, both of my watches has gone up in value
'A playful, but mysterious little dish' nice filming TGV and WB team
My father left that exact watch to me when he died 10 years ago. My mother gave it to him on their 20 year anniversary in 1981 .Sadly I had to sell it a few years ago to I’m still so very sick about it every time I see one .
God that's tough man.
Dang - I'm sorry man. Hope you wrote down the serial number in case fate does a number on you and brings it back your way
I feel for u bro. That's tough.
Had do the same myself with my dads omega a long while ago. Soon released what I had done so my kids have a few handy downs off me now.
Sorry for you man. Life can force us to do stuff like that. But don't sweat it, it's just a thing, the real connection to your dad is in your heart not on your wrist.
So don't sell your heart!
One of my favourite films ever and now my favourite intro👌I love the tapestry dial of Patrick Bateman's Rolex, it's such a great watch. I must go I have a 8.30 reservation at Dorsia😁
Hi TGV
Yes - the Date Just surely is up there as the perfect mix of versatility and elegance. And therefore a perfect candidate for the “one watch collection”.
Love my 1603 all steel model and will never tire of it. But should I ever go for a watch with gold on it, it would almost certainly be the “Bateman”; that’s surely pure style too. More flashy but still very elegant...
Should bad destiny force me to get rid of my intire collection except one watch the Date Just would probably be the one I would stick to.
Keep up the good work👍
It seems that Rolex did not want to be associated with the character and obtained from the movie to change a line from "don't touch the Rolex" to "don't touch the watch". It is also not clear whether the watch eventually and for the same reason was a Seiko rather than a Rolex. Here some users on watch forums posted screenshots of the movie that seem to show a watch with the crown at 4 o'clock and hence maybe a Seiko 5 snxj.
That said the character was certainly meant to wear that classic Rolex.
That was my fave intro hands down
Best intro yet!
I know this video is old, but I’m reading that a Seiko was used in the movie and not a Rolex. Seiko SNXJ90, which probably came out around 1987. Was this done to cut costs on the film or did they do this intentionally since Mr. Bateman was always trying to up his game but just couldn’t. Like the business cards. Either way both watches are gorgeous
OK, the chilled wrist watches on your eyes properly got me 😂😂 - brilliant!
Good evening TGV, great piece of cineastic art ... is your vid 😉 Really enjoyed the intro, and the history of the Datejust. Your apartment looks very tasteful decorated. Have a great weekend!
Thumbs up for the intro alone.
I love my 16233 Datejust. But I rarely wear it...only wearing it to work today cause it's my "work-Friday" and I saw this video LOL. I'm 36 as well but I'm low-key saving for a Presidential DayDate 18238 for my 40th birthday.
Datejust was my first luxury watch too
that intro was pure gold
Just bought the 16012 today, my first Rolex.
The movie was a huge influence on my decision.
I am certain I will not regret that purchase ;)
Thank you for the great reviews!
Then u should have bought a Seiko cause thats what he wore I’m the movie
@@catvideis Nah sorry, he wore the Datejust. In the Book there are actually several times where that exact watch gets quoted. In the movie they had to say watch instead of "rolex" due to the brand banning it for the crew to say.
Stellar video sir, as always. LOVED that intro!!
Ta,
D
Pope Jean Paul II rocking the vintage two tone datejust. That is something!
I just bought a 1990 tapestry dial two tone from your company two weeks ago
The background music is just so tony and balmy, I genuinely feel classy looking at the video, kudos for such an interesting take on such horological classic.
Grazie Tristano. Great intro. I still reckon the Explorer... Ah well... 😎
You are the Only Watch channel that I haven’t removed since I click the button
Really good as well as interesting to look at.
Fun fact: American Psycho was the first movie that me and my wife watched when we first met. We didn't make it past the DVD title screen until.... later. Haha, but after we settled down, we did watch the movie and I'll always remember that!
Enter the void is such a well done film! Took me watching it a few times to fully “grasp” the concept of what I was watching. Fantastic director!
Fantastic review of such a timeless classic! Enjoyed it very much.
The tasteful thickness of it oh my god it’s even automatic
"I believe in a sensible diet" *guzzles Tito's* 😂😂
Amazing video. Nice review. Keep up the good work.
That intro 😂😂 love your sense of humor!
Genuinely hilarious opening.
Best intro ever! Great video to keep the classic date just relevant.
Please get one of the original american psycho watch for yourself. Id love to see it regularly in your videos and it really suits you well like the two tone date day tudor bay in the day.
Fantastic entertainment value from beginning to end. Great video! The attention to detail in each shot is appreciated.
You are such a good writer, my gosh!!! I'm an English lit major back in the day, but wow. I'm in awe. I've loved your content for the last what? Decade... Or so. Since then I've went from an Invicta sub rip off to:
Universal Geneve Polerouter Date 18k
Vacheron Constantin 18k fluted and engraved
Tudor 1926
Tudor black bay steel
Rolex Datejust 41 MOP stainless/ jubilee
That's my every day watch. Love that little thing to pieces.
You classy devil!
Wear it with pride my friend.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Cracking intro!! 😂 Great Video.. Binge watching your last few videos.. Been away... Throughly enjoyable.. Keep it going TGV!! BMJ ENGLAND 🏴
That intro!!! 😂 The DJ is a beautiful watch, but my ultimate grail will always be a Day Date in gold. I know it’s a bit blingy, which is not my style, but I love how it looks and wears at 36mm.
Oh my. I found this video a bit late. Fantastic.
The intro was just gold!
Loved that Savastano reference, glad to see Gomorrah is appreciated! Fantastic tv show! Thanks TGV
Ok, normally I dont think your funny, but that intro was fantastic. The fact you made a joke about you small wrists shows character. Great stuff!!! Laughed alot at this intro!
This will be my first Rolex
Nicely done intro...I'd love to see you do an Apocalypse Now Seiko 6105 Captain Willard skit! Perhaps without the blood and tears..
Great intros mate. Love the 80's, love NYC (hoping go go back soon), of course I love the watch. If I was to get a Rolex I think I'd get a white dial airking from around the time (Mr Cruise wears one in Cocktail). Really into my vintage pieces at the moment, especially from the 70s to 80s. Superb video as always. Enjoy the watch, enjoy the weekend 👍
Intro was so hilarious.
Thanks Tristan, for this tribute to a truly great icon in wristwatch history.
This is the perfect tribute to the watch and the movie! I noticed in the film that Bryce and Bateman’s Rolex watches are what appear to be seiko’s! If you pause during the scene the two are snorting cocaine in the bathroom you can see Bryce’s watch where the crown is at the 4 o’clock position with a day date window at 3 o’clock. Usually the seiko trademarks. You can also see it when Bateman in his apartment leans on his stereo before he plays hip to be square that the watch has the same features of Bryce’s watch except Bateman has a white dial on the watch. I assume this because when Rolex was asked permission to use their watches in the movie Rolex said everyone but Bateman’s character could wear a Rolex watch due to them not wanting to associate their watches with a serial killer even if fictional. Now I know I’m gonna get the “you’re wrong” and insults from this but I only noticed it on my last viewing of the blu Ray version that these features were on the watches. But all in all a fantastic movie and a fantastic video along with a beautiful watch!
LOL thank you sir!
Very kind of you to say :D
I actually noticed the Seiko, because for the simultaneous day date at the 3 o'clock.
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry a pleasure as always sir! Have a great weekend!
Best Intro ever!
This intro really made me want to watch American Psycho. Such a great movie!
I have a Rolex Turn-O-Graph in this two tone style. I think it’s amazing because it fits every setting in my life, and can be dressed up and down with straps. It’s still a datejust, just with a little twist.
I really really enjoyed listening to you talking so passionatly, about this watch. Well Done sir
9:08 beautiful shot here
Do you like Seiko?
Their early work was a little too 'new-wave' for my taste, but when Seiko 5 came out in '63, I think they really came into their own - both commercially and artistically. The whole movement has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the watch a big boost.
I believe Seiko has a more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
This intro. Is simply the best.
Love this movie. Chrisitan Bale is from my home town - Bournemouth!
Really TGV. Adjusting the day with the hour hand at 12....
Nice ! I bought one for my brother when graduated high school (1975) , stainless , he still uses it quite a it. The bracelet was made in New York. Nice review !!!
