It's incredible how rapidly this procedure is improving. If I saw this guy in the street, I would never have imagined he'd had a face transplant. It's unbelievable. Where will it be 20 years from now?
I too thought wow he looks amazing! And what a gift from her late husband.. That was totally remarkable to be able to do that for someone else.

Not many people could have done this, congrats to this woman and her courage. Your husband lives on through others every single day and will not be forgotten as he has literally saved many peoples lives.
I must say, this man is blessed. The surgeons did an excellant job. Other than a few scars above the eyes, you really cant even notice that he didnt have a face before. Even his facial movements are near perfect. Amazing.
Can only imagine after a few more years how much further technology will be.
This is an example of how donating your organs when u die can truely save and drastically improve another's persons life.
The greatest gift on can give literally.

I can't even begin to imagine how she felt or what must have been running through her mind when she saw him.
I unexpectedly lost my wife Chris four years ago. One afternoon about two years ago I saw a woman at a local park that from about 50 ft. away, looked just like her. When I saw her, my heart almost pounded out of my chest and it was all I could do not to run to her. I literally had to tell myself, " that's not Chris.... that's not her !!!! "
She is a super strong person to be able to meet him !!!

I was in complete in utter shock!!

What a sweet wife. I don't know how I'd react to something like that happening to my husband, and then being approached to give his face to someone else. She handled it so gracefully, and I wish her and her little guy all the luck and love in the world. Science is amazing, and people like her are also. I hope I'd have the resolve she had in that situation. She did an amazing thing and her son is going to be so proud of her one day when he understands the magnitude of her choice.

I thought it will be a little frightening as well but looking both of them they look similar, maybe because it wasn't the whole face itself and bone structure makes the skin

He speaks better because his surgery was.. A loooooooot more difficult than the others. In his surgery, they connected all the nerves. So he has full control over his face. He can smell. He can taste. Everything. In most other face transplants, at least up to that point, only some or none of the nerves were connected. Because it makes the surgery longer and increases the risk of death. I belive his surgery was.. 50 houers long..or something like that

I’m glad that this story had a happy ending, but I hope that the wife realizes that it was her actions that saved so many lives, and that this is not an achievement of the husband who killed himself.
The way she phrases it makes it seem as though she wants the child to be proud of his dad, but to say that it was somehow a sacrifice that the father made to help others, or to say that he had in any way did anything positive by committing suicide is dangerous.
Regardless, may he Rest In Peace.
That's exactly what I was thinking. This isn't the father's achievement. It's the mothers generosity. What about *this* should the father be proud for? He killed himself and left his family behind. If she wants her son to remember the dad in a heroic or cherishable way she she find something that shows his compassion towards the family.
But I thought the person who dies makes the decision to be an organ donor. In that case, it would’ve been the guys wish! You sign up for that. In Tn it’s on our driver license.
