  • Tutorial video on how to remove and replace the power steering rack on a 1g DSM (Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, or Plymouth Laser).
    NOTES:
    1. Note the positions of the tie rod ends and try get them close to the original position when swapping them over!
    2. You will need to get the car aligned after you change the racks!
    3. Make sure the new rack is in the center of it's throw before inserting the splines into the coupler to make sure your steering wheel stays centered.

    Hey, I managed to get this done by myself right after the pandemic hit. Using this tutorial was just what I needed. A mechanic buddy of mine was supposed to help me but he never showed up and I got tired of waiting so I set aside a weekend and got it done. Thanks, brother!

    Great video I had to change steering rack on my vr4 legnum, I was wondering if not to do this on my own, but due to lack of garage and living in UK where you cannot predict the weather, got it done via mechanic.

    Been going through your videos. Theyre awesome man! I've got a 90 TSI myself, and damn. I know the steering rack struggle. That thing is a total pain in the ass to get out with the motor/trans still in there. haha
    But yea, keep up the good work man! Videos are great!

    Great video again! I would like to add one small point to this video, not that it wasnt perfect the way it was, but it may be helpful. People WILL need to get an alignment done after performing this swap. I always try to meausre my current rack tie rods and end links to get them in the ballpark and match these measurements on my new rack. Also make sure you are in the center of your throw before inserting the splines into the coupler. This will save some people the mistake of having to pull the rack back down to correct things once up. Again great job doing this video and I would like to see more video's more often from you. I enjoy them very much. - Adam@SickPerformance

    I've always found it easier to pull the transfer case straight onto my chest. After it comes off the alignment dowel the splines from the output shaft will hold it until you can wiggle it off.

    Wish me luck lol, im going to be doing this pretty soon. Except I found a manual steering rack from a base model 1.8l dsm and all the mounting brackets for it, if all goes well ill have those shipped from a wrecking yard with everything I need. Just going to completely get rid of the power steering all together, but pulling it out is going to be biggest hassle of this project..

    I found it easier to access the hoses and lines to the steering rack from under the car instead of removing plug wires and ac lines from the top. I drive a fwd though so maybe it's different. Total time about 8 hrs minus a trip to the store thanks!

    This job on a proper hoist with good tools takes me 1.5 - 2 hours, depending on how much the steering shaft bolts fight me. Also have to torch the jam nuts a lot of the time. I always recommend replacing the inner and outer tie rods with any steering rack replacement.

    hello I saw your article on dsmtuners and you replace outlander brake system I mean caliper and rotors so I have 2g dsm rims and specs:
    Wheels measure 16x6" +46mm offset
    Wheels carry a 5x114.3 bolt pattern and 67.1 Center bore
    so outlander brake system will match with my rims?
    thanks

    How’d you install those brakes? I have 05 brackets and calipers from an outlander and a 90 dsm awd but the brackets aren’t the same. From what I read I thought these would bolt right up? Thanks

    Hello! I hope you still check the comments on these videos. My power steering rack is definitely dead on my 1990 gsx. Would you be able to tell me the exact part number I would need to order off of Rock Auto?

    How hard was it to disconnect the shaft from the spline on the rack? I loosened the 12mm bolt but its not giving... I can't really get a pry bar in there to separate.
    Any advice?

    • @VelocityLabs
      @VelocityLabs  8 років тому

      +Joe Wrenches I'm mainly using a GH2 with a couple different lenses and I also use a little Sony dsc-tx10 to get into tight places, like the shot 4:55 showing the rack and 4 bolts holding it on is the dsc-tx10. I also have some T3i shots mixed in occasionally. I want a Sony A7S, those things can literally shoot in the dark! I need more car parts first though :P

    Hello Erik love the AWESOME DSM vids. I need your expert advise with my 1g GSX, I have to replace the brake. The guy I got it from told me to look on google for the 1ga big brake. I just don't know what to get, please help I need to change the brakes man. And I'm also replacing the suspension, I got the KYB AGX shocks and the GROUND CONTROL springs. What's your opinion on that setup. Thanks for your time, and please continue with the amazing VIDEOS!!!

    • @VelocityLabs
      @VelocityLabs  8 років тому

      +isthatkool I did the 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander Brakes. Here's a link, if it doesn't work just google "dsm bigger brake upgrade." You'll need some adapter lines from RRE and rotors and calipers from an Outlander. That suspension setup should work well! Good luck!www.dsmtuners.com/threads/05-06-outlander-bigger-brake-upgrade.428973/

    • @iownyounoobs4388
      @iownyounoobs4388 8 років тому

      +isthatkool You can also pull the brake calipers and mounting brackets off of a 92-94 dsm or a base model 3000 gt SL or a 2g dsm. the only problem is that the 1ga has a screw in brake line and the 2g's have a banjo fitting. but if you pull from a 1gb it should be a direct swap without even changing the brake lines. i have no idea about the 3000 gt SL calipers. Just make sure you get the ones with the same type of fitting as the one on your car so you dont have to swap brake lines. And then you can order 2g gsx rotors and bam.

    • @iownyounoobs4388
      @iownyounoobs4388 8 років тому

      +isthatkool its a really easy swap too, i think in total i spent $80, but i also had the calipers when i bought the car. each rotor was like $30 or so and then i had to buy brake pads.

    I have a question for you. Have you ever had to deal with your idle pulsing? And if so what was your solution?

    • @VelocityLabs
      @VelocityLabs  8 років тому +1

      +Steve Davenport I've been lucky with this car, but idle surge on DSM's is pretty common. I'd start with a boost leak test and then follow this guide or other articles on DSM Tuners. www.dsmtuners.com/threads/how-to-fix-your-idle-surge-problem.191137/ Good luck!

    So in theory... with the Front Wheel... it souldn't be too bad as I wouldn't have to worry about the transfer case. Just found out mine has some major leaks; dumped a whole bottle in a half in under a week JUST SITTING while I was doing a turbo upgrade.
