    4 minutes of song without looping, that's incredible

      seriously? Wait till you discover that a symphony is 40 minutes of music with -wait for it- no looping....

      @@matthewwalsh7813 Most old video game tracks are really short 30 seconds to minute long loops to save space, so it is actually impressive, also tim follin made a lot of really long songs even if in the context of the game you wouldnt have time to hear the full thing lol

      @@saucesusman5241 No no, don't get me wrong. I'm here for a reason lmao! Of course it's impressively good music. Tim Follin is an absolute legend! I was just ribbing KomanderZ for what I find to be a naive comment. ;P

    What's really cool about this track is Follin's use of the FM's ability to create perfect 5ths with its overtones. Most of the chords are built with 9ths, and by pairing the 3rd and 7th (perfect 5th) along with the 5th and 9th (another perfect 5th), Follin creates these lush, 5-note chords with just 3 sound channels. Most of the chords are 9ths because it's one of the only chords where this technique works

      Makes sense, In the case of the NES and the SNES, japanese devs had years of established technique. Follin bros were in the unique position of developing for multiple consoles, so techniques carried over from the SID chip of the C64 and the paula chip of the Amiga are audible in his tracks. So his tracks used techniques that you would literally never hear on japanese consoles.

    does anybody else think a cover of this with 'actual instruments' would not be as groovy?
    technical achievements aside, Follin managed to get such a timeless unique vibe from these sound chips.

    • @StoneColdMiracle
      @StoneColdMiracle 2 роки тому +32

      I think there's something that's really unique about old chiptune music on old consoles that yeah you would lose if you made it with modern instruments
      It's those limitations that brought it out, although new stuff made using old sounchips really do have that same vibe

      I'd say it depends a lot on how you do it. You could take the exact same piece and just change the instruments and chances are that you get something mid. On the other hand, you could rearrange the piece so the new instrument set fits with it and get better results, whether respecting the original material or giving it a different feeling.

    His musical talent, swagger, and style amount to outright vulgarity. This shouldn't be legal and in some circles it's considered high treason to listen beyond two minutes - akin to losing ones mind, virginity, or soul. A road of sonic delight where the perils out way the pleasures drastically. Keep on rocking!
