Beautiful and unique bowl. From the last profile of it on the video I see a crown, for the King you are! A great turning, teaching and addictive video. Best.

Thank you and for sure they are fun. I have some very green Maple I thought about trying but have been keeping this piece of Cherry around for something special and happy it worked out. Not sure how this would work with green wood but might be fun trying. Thanks for watching, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Jeez, trying that out of green wood……I wonder if I could get it thin enough not to warp or crack! I sure as heck wouldn’t “video” it! LOL!

Another nice one, Gary. I've been trying to think of what I should do with that small pile of 4x4 lumber I've got left over from a porch railing job. Now, I know. I'll have to give one of those 3-corner bowls a try. Trouble is, it's clear, straight-grained wood; I don't know how to work with that! Haha! Ah, a 3-corner burl bowl? Thanks Paul, as a matter of fact I have a decent sized Maple burl that needs some trimming. Perhaps that might be in the future. But I also have something else in mind I want to make. I was planning on Black Locust and will still probably go that way. Have fun, Gary
Yaaaay! I could tell you were enjoying the challenge, Gary. It's nice to be retired and have the time to let it set a bit, cook some BBQ and get back at it after some thinking time. As always an amazing piece, Gary. I need to get a similar live centre so that i can use it how you used yours. Always something new to get. lol. Lovely finish as always. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thank you Bruce! The live center came with my lathe. It is just a matter of taking the point out. This piece of Cherry sanded nicely and really took a nice finish. Thanks for watching and take care, Gary
Thank you very much Kent. Believe me it was on my mind the whole time. Loosing a corner pretty much would lose it all. Once I did get the corner I stayed away from it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Gary
Hi Gary, I watched your video and Phil Anderson’s and decided I’d like to make one. I wasn’t sure I could hold the work in the lathe as you did and I was correct. So I removed the corners so I had flat surfaces for the drive and live centres. It worked out well and I now have a tri-corner bowl about 115mm corner to corner and 70mm high. I started with a piece of mahogany 93x93x94mm.
Love that bowl Gary, it is a a beauty with those finishes on it! That is something I hope to try sometime but summer is always very busy so maybe this winter! Thanks! Cheers Al
Nice three winged bowl. Some times they can be a challenge to turn depending on the wood used. The biggest concern about turning this type of bowl is keeping your fingers. Last one I turned was from plywood from the big box store. It can be a big challenge keeping the wood from tearing out by the three corners. Best to use pine or Baltic birch plywood. Don’t use oak plywood. I won’t tell you how I know, but it was a disaster.
Thank John you and for sure I would use Baltic birch ply. I made the dodecahedron and turned it into a sphere using Baltic birch and it worked great. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you . Well there really was not much size to the cutoffs. Phil has turned a few pieces of wood I gave him. And I just turned a piece of Olive he gave me. Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi Gary, Absolutely lovely. This is on my need to try one day list, a very long list, LOL. Fantastic job on keeping the corners, I have seen so many people who end up without pointed corners. Great video my friend. Take care Gary. Hwyl, Huw PS Was in my workshop.
Ahh ok well I knew there was a reason you were not 1st!, and a good reason at that. Happy you liked it and looking forward to when you do try it. Take care/ Hwyl,, Gary
That was a very good result, Gary. Never know it was your first attempt. I've wanted to try one of these but haven't had the right piece of wood for it. That and my embellishing has been a bit too extensive, lately. I need a few straightforward projects and that amount of hand sanding doesn't look appealing, at the moment. Glad polishing pastes are so effective by hand. I suppose a person could get a buffing ball to buff the inside of the bowl and use a regular wheel for the outside when it comes to polishing. Yeah, that might save a little bit of elbow grease. Thanks for showing us your fine results and have a great week!
Thank you Jay. So the last square bowl I did was good practice for cutting these wings and getting the wall thickness the same on the edge. And natural edge bowls with long high wings is similar as well. So I looked at it as doing one of those. Thanks for watching and when you feel up to it give it a try. Take care, Gary
Great turning job, Gary and an excellent teaching video. I've made a few of these with varying success and you've motivated me o try again! I hope you kept those cherry shavings and used hem in your BBQ grill. adds a great flavor to chicken!
I have various containers of smoking shavings as well as small pieces. I have two stainless boxes I fill with those shavings if I am doing something that takes awhile. Such as a pork tender. Those really come out good. Take care, Gary
Great job ! These are so much fun, I have only made smaller versions of this and I'm still amazed that when I complete one and it comes out in one piece.
Very nice Gary! I have a cube of walnut that I have been wanting to use to try this, just afraid of wrecking a beautiful piece of walnut! I just finished a square dish from a piece of 8/4 walnut. While similar (with points flying around), I know it will be more challenging. Thanks for a great video. Wes @ Piedra Designs
Thank you Wes! I did a Walnut with very vertical walls that is similar. As I recall for some reason I did not take the corners to a point. I will have to do another I guess. Have fun making your Tri Corner Bowl. Gary
Gary. I tried my first 3 sided bowl this weekend. Very nervous due to cutting so much air. I finished the bottom tonight. I’m going to attempt to make it a lidded box I think. Definitely not a speed demon on this project.
That is really wonderful Gary! A real nice piece of art. You make it look so simple, that maybe I could even do it. I will put this on the long (and growing) list of different projects that I want to try. Thanks for the great lesson, the encouragement, and a great piece of work! See you next week.
Excellent! Haven’t turned a bias cut bowl in a long time. Really caused the grain to go in crazy directions. You did great with it. 1 place in particular was the curves between the points. Fantastic job of getting those areas the same thickness. Such a good example. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Doug. Two things on this I found to be a challenge. Keeping the tips and making the edge the same width. I have done a number of multi axis turnings where they needed to be that way so it was not too bad. Just very careful cuts as it can get messed up very easily. Thanks for watching, Gary
Lovely piece! Great technique and exploration/testing of how you tackle the next area youre working on. I've always wanted to try one myself but it looks like a butt clenching experience!
Thank you Ollie! The only clenching moments were worrying about cutting those corners away or chipping them out. It was like doing a natural edge turning with 4 very delicate places. Thanks for watching. Gary
Beautiful bowl Gary. That’s a project that I’ve wanted to try for quite some time now but for whatever reason just haven’t yet. I have the perfect piece of wood to try that with to that I’d be able to get a 6”+ cube from, just so happens to be cherry as well ironically. Gorgeous finish on that piece.
Hi Gary, great video and I am sure that it will help a lot a of people. I also turn a smaller Version with a tealight candle incerted in the bottom.
Thank you Peter. One of these would be perfect for a tealight. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is a beautiful tri-cornered bowl. I really enjoyed watching you turn it. Why don't you send Phil a piece of the cutoff?
Thank you . Well there really was not much size to the cutoffs.
Phil has turned a few pieces of wood I gave him. And I just turned a piece of Olive he gave me.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary, Absolutely lovely.
This is on my need to try one day list, a very long list, LOL.
Fantastic job on keeping the corners, I have seen so many people who end up without pointed corners.
Great video my friend.
Take care Gary.

PS Was in my workshop.
Ahh ok well I knew there was a reason you were not 1st!, and a good reason at that.
Happy you liked it and looking forward to when you do try it.

Take care,
Gary
Well done 👍
Thank you very much Greg.

Take care,
Gary
Excellent 👍🏻
Thank you 👍
Another great video. I was concerned about the sharp corners (safety) but I think you demonstrated good techniques, thanks.
Thank you Tim. Those sharp corners could be wicked! Thanks for watching.
Gary
Really nice Gary!! I tried one of those a while back and it didn't turn out well. That one is really nice!
Thanks Chris! I may do another one in the future but give it a different look.
Thanks for watching!
Great job ! These are so much fun, I have only made smaller versions of this and I'm still amazed that when I complete one and it comes out in one piece.
Thank you Mark, yes they sure are a lot of fun. Happy you are having fun making them as well.
Take care,
Gary
super nice bowl
Thank you very much Ward and thanks for watching.

Well they are slow going compared to a round bowl. Sounds like your doing fine.
❤❤❤
Thank you Punky!
That is really wonderful Gary! A real nice piece of art. You make it look so simple, that maybe I could even do it. I will put this on the long (and growing) list of different projects that I want to try. Thanks for the great lesson, the encouragement, and a great piece of work! See you next week.
Thank you Mark and it was on my list as well. I still have a few things I will work in. Kind of fun doing different things.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely piece! Great technique and exploration/testing
of how you tackle the next area youre working on.
Thank you Scott! I would have liked for this to be a little bigger but this wasn't bad. Looking forward to hearing how yours goes.
Take care,
Gary
