The story of Spirit of Justice is set roughly one year after its predecessor, Dual Destinies, and once again focuses on defense attorney Phoenix Wright and his two understudies Apollo Justice and Athena Cykes. While previous games in the series have been set in Los Angeles, California, Spirit of Justice sees Phoenix travel to the fictional kingdom of Khura'in, a deeply religious nation in the far east where the art of spirit channeling originates. Roughly half the game's episodes detail Phoenix's activities in Khura'in, while the other half follow Apollo and Athena, who are left to watch over the Wright Anything Agency in Phoenix's absence.

The developers confirmed that this case only exists as a filler case on purpose. Their reasoning was that the player would probably need a light case between the plot-heavy and emotionally-taxing third case and the finale.

Some notes about Dissociative Identity Disorder:
When the person switches personalities, it's done in one of three ways: consensual, forced, and triggered. The 4 personalities of Uendo are a combination of consenual and triggered. Uendo, Patches, and Kisegawa are all consensual, meaning that they willingly switch personalities when the need arises, and because of this, they more easily share memories. Owen, on the other hand, is a triggered change, the trigger being that all 3 other personalities have to be unconscious in order for him to be awakened. Also, the personalities themselves are split into two categories: the core personality, or the personality that was there originally, and the alters, the ones that are created from the disorder.
Now for a more tragic note:
Dissociative Identity Disorder is typically brought about by some form of psychological trauma, mostly occurring during childhood. An example of this is Fukawa, who created the Genocide Jack persona through the combination of being bullied by other kids, and being abused by her parents (and also perhaps some seriously repressed sexuality). On some occasions, the alter personalities are created so that the core could essentially hide away inside his/her mind. The reason I'm saying this is because Owen himself mentally being 5 likely means that Owen is the actual core personality, while Uendo, Patches, and Kisegawa are the alters, and that something incredibly tragic happened when he was at a very young age that caused him to create 3 different personalities so that he could hide away from the world. Also, considering that Owen is mentally a 5 year old, it means that he's rarely been conscious since the day he made the alters.

Not-So-Fun facts about Uendo: One of his personalities Kisagawa is a courtesan, which implies that Uendo may have either had a mother that was a prostitute or has at least been exposed to sex work as a child. Also, I read a theory that said that since it's literally impossible to get drunk from a single manju bun,it could imply that Uendo was forced to consume alcohol as a child, which is why whenever he consumes alcohol it immediately draws out Owen since that personality is linked with the childhood trauma of being forced to do so.

A bit of scary fact of Uendo: Multiple personality are mostly caused by a severe trauma during early childhood. It could be emotional abuse or even sexual abuse. We see that Owen 4th is a 5 years old and is easily scared. It could be that Owen is the true personality. The core. That's because unlike the other 3, he was never able to get older. He's still a 5 years old while Uendo is 28.

As a benefit to this case, Uendo is very accurate to someone with DID.
For one, his personalities change mostly subconsciously. This is important. Many people with DID change personalities without realizing it. The reason is believed to be that the brain discharges and causes a drastic change in personality, like bipolar does with mood and emotion.
The second thing is something that a lot of fiction gets wrong. The personalities generally share memories. They know what happens to one with a general idea, but they cant notice separate details. This is mainly because the memory storage of your brain is not split. That would hinder your ability to remember so many things, ranging from academic knowledge to common movement.
Third, you said that the first 3 personalities would know about Owen because they inhabit the same body. That isnt exactly the case. If a personality is mostly unconscious, the others wouldnt know specifics about him. It's like if someone is behind you, but you dont see them. You know they are there, but you dont know about them.
Lastly, i would like to say that Uendo is the reason this case is amazing. If it werent for him, this case would have been mediocre, but the accuracy of DID they portray shows their passion in this game and i not only respect that, but appreciate representation in media that isnt partially inaccurate or entirely negative.

It's really sad indeed, not only did he get traumatized at such a young age (resulting in his DID) but his body is 28 so he can't even experience a normal childhood
So, this case is ultimately not relevant at all to the overall plot of the story, but it does have big relevance to the overall theme of Spirit of Justice, which is the succession of future lineages. Which, we've seen a lot of in this game so far, like Trucy with the whole magician's thing, Rayfa becoming queen one day, Alhbi wanting to become a head monk, and now Geiru for committing murder cause she couldn't succeed her father. So, I have more leniency for this case due to that reason. Plus, it's also got some fun characters.
On a side note, if Geiru didn't have those "big balloons", the judge probably wouldn't have let Athena cross examine her lol. Kinda ironic that her balloons were the reason she lost.
Any time they show Owen using his coat as a cover, I just wanna snuggle him and tell him everything's OK. He's so cute! 😸

Hey Nico! To answer your question on trauma regarding Uendo most like he had long term sexual abuse as a child and most likely when he was 5 due to that being the age of Owen. This is the case with most patients with DID and they usually get an alter (personality) that's the age they were when the trauma occurred. I doubt you'll see this but I enjoy educating people on mental health! (I'm currently in a doctoral program working on getting my PsyD in clinical psychology)

This was a great trial overall. Uendo made this case for me, I really love all his personalities and Owen is truly precious.

I don't know if anyone's pointed this out yet, but when Nico presents the wrong evidence at 1:11:40, the Judge references Lotta Hart's phrase "reck-given". I never knew that before and I'm genuinely happy/surprised that they included a secret cameo like that into the game. They probably have loads other easter eggs like that though

I was very excited by that when I accidentally presented wrong evidence there so I decided not to reload it lol. I think I remember seeing another reference to a previous game in a similar way, but I don't remember exactly where or what it was, but it's still nice that there's things like that around~

Oh boy. Nico, the next episode, Turnabout revolution is a very special one.
Its the longest chapter in the whole series, clocking in at a playtime of 13 and half hours. But don't let the length fool you.
Not only is the next chapter of Spirit of Justice one of the best in the whole franchise, it is very much considered to be THE best case in the whole series. It actually starts off with some of the lowest stakes of the series, but slowly but surely, it escalates further and further into the biggest climax of the whole franchise. Trust me, and many other people, that the final chapter of this game is gonna be worth it, and the final chapter alone has made this game many peoples all time favorites in the series, even above AAI2. Its that good.

At least from my perspective, I've seen a lot of mixed discussion regarding the case, with just as many people disliking it as those who like it.

Okay, embarrassing story time.
By this point, like Nico (and probably most people), I suspected Geiru. Keep in mind all the boob jokes the game made when she was introduced. When Owen explained that the murderer was "smooshing something into his (Taifu's/Shisho's) face", I didn't at all realize what that "something" obviously was. Instead of thinking of anything that was in the room, I assumed it was something the killer would have to have brought with them... And then I made the single strangest leap in logic imaginable.
Because of Geiru's introduction and other reasons that, to this day, I still can't make sense of... For a minute, I genuinely believed that Geiru murdered Taifu Toneido by smothering him to death with her breasts. And *that* is my dumbest Ace Attorney moment.

Cosplaytheif Yeah I think that's probably a big reason a lot of people ship them honestly, if they were both girls or both boys, a lot more people would just peg them as friends or siblings. Probably more people would ship them if they were both dudes than if they were girls, because gay men seem more "accepted" in these sort of fandoms than gay women, but it still wouldn't be as much as they are now.

This case is a proof that Athena having her own game would be awesome, we would be able to see how she (and maybe Blackquill as well) would deal with witnesses like Uendo in courtroom from the psycholy-point of view. It's super interesting to me.
On the other hand, nah.
this episode made me realise how similar is athena's voice to monokuma, I can't believe I never noticed it. also I won't ever be able to look at dough the same way, good day to make pizza

Overall, while this is my least favorite case in the game, I thought it was very enjoyable and fun, especially with the return of Blackquill and the addition of Uendo. It may be filler but it is very fun filler. Next up is the final case (excluding DLC), one of my favorite cases in the entire series.
Turnabout Revolution is amazing but it honestly doesn't beat Farewell My Turnabout for me. That being said,it comes VERY close.
I mostly agree, and totally see why. It's a real good game

Hopefully AA7, which I hear might come out on the Nintendo Switch, will be just as good, if not better, than this game.

For a filler case, this was pretty great! It gave us the best witness and was pretty good plot wise, I’m very glad it didn’t drag on either.
And now we’re on to Turnabout Revolution! I love this case a whole bunch! Though it is extremely long.
I can't feel sympathize for Geiru action. She kill her own master for the mentality that Kristoph and Reus had that if I can't have it no one can and just because he didn't give her his name. She even basically accuse a child for murder.
Yeah, they screwed up with her in my opinion.

I really hope she makes a comeback in AA7. The way Capcom handled Athena in this game really shows how insignificant of a character she is.

Remember in dual destinies when the 4th and 5th cases should have been only one big case...well turnabout revolution is what it would have looked like, making it (probably) the longest case in the AA series
Every case was story important in Investigations 2, but neither case 2 nor 3 from T&T were related to the main story.

25:00. This is honestly one of my favorite parts of the game. Having Simon behind the defense bench was a delight and this scene was just awesome.
Just a heads up Nico, the last case is actually longer than Rise from the Ashes from the first game. There also aren't that many "To Be Continued" screens. Of course, this might be punishment for putting the mental image of the Judge wearing a bikini in my head.

You know it only just occurred to me, but doesn't Athena strikingly resemble Lynne from Ghost Trick? I say this because if I remember right both games were made by capcom.
Hey its not my fault Ghost trick hasn't been on my mind for the past 50 years!
In fact, Ghost Trick was made by Shu Takumi, the writer of the original Ace Attorney trilogy, Apollo Justice, and Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney. Another comparison: Yomiel and Yanni Yogi are quite similar in character, motivations, and circumstances. In both cases, (Spoilers for both Ghost Trick and Turnabout Goodbyes), they were framed for a crime they didn't commit, upon which their fiancée committed suicide, and then they went into isolation and developed a close bond with an animal that they named after their dead fiancée.

Well, actually Uendo is the real culprit behind the DL-6 incident. See, he was actually the one who tazed the fuck out of Phoenix, framed Maya for the murder of Mia, and bombed courtroom #4 in the last game! See, uendo is actually the true identity of the phantom, who murdered Athena's mother because one of his personalities are a literal psychopath.
Athena: Yes, but how does it tie in with the current game?
Well you see... Uendo is actually voiced by the person who voices all the characters in this game!

Prepare yourself Nico, for the awesomeness that is Turnabout Revolution. Possibly the longest case in AA (or one of them at least). Imagine putting case 4 and 5 of DD in one case, as an example
