The story of Spirit of Justice is set roughly one year after its predecessor, Dual Destinies, and once again focuses on defense attorney Phoenix Wright and his two understudies Apollo Justice and Athena Cykes. While previous games in the series have been set in Los Angeles, California, Spirit of Justice sees Phoenix travel to the fictional kingdom of Khura'in, a deeply religious nation in the far east where the art of spirit channeling originates. Roughly half the game's episodes detail Phoenix's activities in Khura'in, while the other half follow Apollo and Athena, who are left to watch over the Wright Anything Agency in Phoenix's absence.

There's never been a witness in Ace Attorney with dissociative identity disorder. There's been characters like Matt Engarde, who hide how they really are with a pleasant front, but never a person with actual multiple personalities, Uendo shares the condition with Fukawa from Danganronpa so maybe that's what you were thinking of.
iirc, Junko said she switches personas because she gets bored very easily, as far as we know she doesn't have DID, she's pretty much just roleplaying in real-time.
ViperMist I feel like they were waiting to make Athena before they make a DID character in Ace Attorney.
Zeromaru X The Phantom had NO personality and was just acting out the personalities of whoever he copied. It’s nit quite the same thing.
Yeah, DID is pretty distinct from just assuming a different personality, as previous witnesses have. DID patients are defined by having multiple distinct, fully realized personalities, often capable of communicating with one-another and having unique and independent sets of (sometimes shared, sometimes not) memories.
You could very well diagnose Engarde with sociopathy. He disguises his true nature as a self centered ego-maniac with an unassuming persona to get what he wants out of people. Sociopaths feel no remorse for their actions, nor do they consider other human beings to be anywhere near them in value.
I love how suddenly Uendo can look so feminine just by changing the position of the hairstyle and the expression on his face. It's a neat visual effect.
I wish it was that easy in real life.
Nahxdas I was a bit confused about it, like I didn’t want to assume that the personality was female bc the mannerisms look feminine, but it’s confirmed with the blips and in one press conversation where Athena says Ms Kisegawa and I was really happy lol
Ikr? They do a lot of really subtle yet drastic design changes for some of the witnesses this game - like Peeslub'n, who turns from Jesus to KISS by taking off his headband.

This is it. This is peak Ace Attorney.
We've finally gotten to the point where the Judge, the Defense Attorney, the Prosecutor and the Defense Attorney's Assistant (who is also a prosecutor) are sharing an alcoholic snack while court is in session in order to discover if a witness has a secret fourth personality that only exists when they're drunk. They have attained this snack by literally sending a hawk to buy it, presumably with money at the store. We've gotten to peak courtroom shenanigans.
And yet, somehow the only objection I have is that Athena shouldn't be legally allowed to consume alcoholic products in America. She's 19.
Maybe the drinking age is lower in Japanifornia.

It's 18 in Japan...and a good chunk of the world. Being higher than the age of majority is actually extremely rare.

I'm aware the games are actually set in Japan and are hastily localized into a different country, but it's still funny they didn't even bother to address the fact that America has a substantially higher legal drinking age when it became relevant.

It probably depends on location and where they are from too. I remember going to Las Vegas and my friend from Canada was only 20 but when she showed her Canadian ID that she is of age, she was allowed to drink

Either that, or Simon gave Taka a note and Simon would pay later. Which would imply he regularly uses Taka to buy things - imagine being the store clerk and seeing a hawk arrive with a note, and thinking "oh, it's Simon again".
I have the feeling Nahyuta was out of his league here. A witness that has a psychological problem and a defense bench with TWO experts on psychology? Doesn't really give him a lot to work with.
On top of one of said psych experts also being a expert on calling bullshit when he sees it. And being a badass.
I like that the Judge has become familiar enough with Blackquill's shit that he's no longer intimidated by him and actually knows Taka's name
I like that the game pulls off Dissociative Identity Disorder pretty respectfully for the most part, far better than certain media relating to it, DID can have personalities of the opposite gender and it often can have more than 2 personalities, along with other characteristics later on
VortexTC the only problem is that they mislabeled the identities as personalities but your very right A lot of media really mess up when trying to make a character with this disorder
I would disagree, the game handles the disorder very inaccurately. I’m in no way an expert on the matter but I have been fascinated with DID for quite a while and through even the most basic research you will find out that a) a person with DID is not able to swap between personalities at will and b) the personality do not share memories or consciousness (amnesia is one of the most common symptom of persons with DID). DID is a defense mechanism where a person unintentionally fragments their personality in order to cope with severe chronic trauma (usually abuse from caregivers in childhood). It is not a plot device to be used with minimum care or effort put into it.
BikkeBane Although three of the personalities do share memories, Owen doesn’t, which in a way implies him to be the true personality, and the others split of from Owen at the age of 5 from him experiencing a traumatic event.

@@handsoaphandsoap sorry for the lateness, but as someone with DID: a) The swapping is most likely multiple alters in the front, but since they seem to have very good communication, it seems like each alter can have better control aof the body in turns b) Amnesia differs from person to person and this system may have a certain type OSDD, not DID, which is like DID but with little to no amnesia. Just replying in case someone that doesn't know anything about DID sees this

Nahyuta is a super unnecessary prosecutor for this case, but his interactions with Blackquil almost make up for it entirely. Their dynamic is amazing.

No Nico, there actually hasn't been a character with multiple personalities in Ace Attorney. There's been alot of people with fake personas, but not something like this.
YTWeewer I believe he might have been mistaking Fulbright's imposter routine combined with case of forgotten identity.

So far, one of my favorite things about this case is how screwed Nahyuta is. Every other case he's always in control and so condescending, but now everyone and everything seems out to screw him over.
Overall I think the combo of Blackquill/Athena vs Nahyuta works really, really well. Normally the white haired lawyer is uninteresting and flat as cardboard. But now he faces someone who doesn't buy his bullshit for one second. He has a genuine challenge, and struggles to overcome it. It gives him some genuine interactions instead of repeating "you're putrid and will be cast down to hell". And to top it off even the witness is screwing him over. In return, it's nice to see the defense not just take his crap. Blackquill cutting down his beads is a great example.
If Nahyuta returns in the future, I hope it's in the company of Blackquill and Athena. They really bring the best out of him.
Or alternatively, have him be his bro Apollo's Maya and show how they interact once he stops having to be the obligatory asshole rival.

It doesn’t exactly hurt that Blackquill is the embodiment of “cut the crap and cut to the chase” in terms of being a lawyer/Prosecutor. Dude’s spent actual YEARS in prison, he knows bullshit when he sees it.

DI Gumtree sometimes his right eye's iris widens for a brief second and it always amuses me. It's definitely a step up in animations

I think Sadmadhi has gotten less hostile with the idea of being a lawyer and has changed his attacks on Athena for being a newbie rather than a lawyer.
Remember at the end of the third case? Nahyuta told Phoenix the he "owes him a dept that he will repay in court", Nico was confused if it was positive or negative, but I'd say it doesn't matter as much as it showed that Nahyuta acknowledged Phoenix's ability as a lawyer. Also recall what he said to Athena in the beginning when he realized she was unprepared; he said that she was a "disgrace to her profession" which implies that Nahyuta sees something worth respecting in lawyers despite his contempt. So I think you're on to something with his attacks being different.

Is it bad that I was kind of hoping that Athena's Widget would blurt out "F*ck you, Nahyuta" whenever he either used underhanded tactics (like in the previous video cause that really grinded my gears) or belittled Athena.
Also, I am LOVING this witness. The personalities they switch to throughout their time on screen are all interesting. Although we've seen witnesses with exactly the same type of gimmicks(child-like, sophisticated women, easily surprised,etc.) it's cause of all the switches that makes them so much more fun and interesting.
Yoooooo if Let's Dub Project *ever* gets to dubbing SoJ, I would totally see that ad-lib be added in

I like Blackquills, his aggressive nature would be a fun character to play as a defence attorney game. All lawyers are all oh no and but he attacks which such viciousness which is a much needed change of pace really.

I’d argue the best witness in the game is coming in the first part of the next case. They certainly elicit the best line from the judge in the entire game.

While many have said that this is a pretty weak case compared to the rest, the general consensus of what was really good about Turnabout Storyteller, other than Simon and Athena’s interaction and some of the really funny moments, is Uendo Toneido himself. He’s as entertaining as he should be.
Also, about Kisegawa, the female personality... ‘courtesan’ is another word for ‘prostitute’ for those uneducated in certain vocabulary. It was probably done for censorship reasons. You really have to wonder WHERE that personality came from, though.....
PixlGears 10 Courtesan implies a more high quality, more expensive type of “escort” who you’d probably have a nice conversation with. Maybe it was localised like that instead of geisha?? That’s just my own speculation tho
Yeah I remember reading a very dark theory about that personality somewhere, since DID usually develops from childhood trauma...

This case has allowed me to really appreciate Prosecutor Blackquill as sort of an “antihero attorney” rather than just another antagonist. Also I can’t help but get a laugh every time he calls Nahyuta ‘Prosecutor "Sad Monk" ‘
Personally, I didn't mind Nahyuta until this case. He was way too belittling to Athena. I know she's young and this is her first case without Phoenix and Apollo but it just got obnoxious after awhile. It's like how Godot treated Franziska dialed up to 11.

So I noticed that Nayhuta seemed a little off his game. Thats either due to his recent string of losses or due to Simon Blackquill completely recking him. Also I looked the split personality disorder that Uendo has and to get this split personality one has to go through severe sexual, mental, or physical abuse as a child , so someone really messed up Uendo as a child. Just think about that whenever Patches comes out.

Oh my god. Blackquill is so freaking awesome. I love him to absolute bits.
And while I don't like Nahyuta, I feel like a lot of thought went into his character. Since he does so much research, it's very likely that he read up about Athena, including her traumatic past, and tried to use not only her hearing but the inherent weakness to despair to try and bring her to her knees. Good on Athena for not yielding to that asshole. Also, Blackquill being her Maya and protecting her was the sweetest~
I'm only a few minutes in, and Uendo is already hilarious!
One of the few thing that I like about the case is the karuta card as I'm alway a fan of the dying message trope in Phoenix Wright. How the message are never what they mean in face value. It only when we start seeing the truth when the message truly shine. The dying message alway either point to the accuse or to a great twist.

Blackquill was the best part of Dual Destinies, and seeing him back is rad. seriously, he's the perfect amount of snarky, witty and hilarious yet still serious. definitely one of my favourite prosecutors.

I am endlessly pleased by prosecutor sad monk's lamentations in this case. Especially since Simon is constantly giving him trouble.
