The Completionist hey, I just wanted to let you know that although i just found you this month i love your content and i will continue to tune in on your videos thank you for the content you've made my month and more to come.
I was born in 1991 and played this through my childhood. By the time I got to University, the N64 was the most popular console and mario kart was clearly the most popular game. A video game resellers would set up shop on our campus every other week and his booth would be swarmed with buyers and sellers. I couldn't tell you how many times I played this game at pre-drinks and after parties. I would say it has aged VERY well, and not horribly.
One thing that always stuck in my mind about this game is how the Thwomps in Bowser's Castle _really_ enjoy crushing you. Like, a little TOO much. It wasn't until I was older that I realized they're basically teabagging you.
I was firmly convinced as a kid that Donkey Kong was a member of the Bloods as I thought he waa saying "brrratt brrraatt" so I never chose him....I am no gangster 😂
Huge props for the info at the start. This is the kind of thing that you can spend a few hours trawling forums for good options and find all sorts of different opinions and recommendations. This video is a great testament to, and example of, the product used, which goes a long way when you’re looking into your options.
Probably because the music (and almost everything else) in Diddy Kong Racing is so epic (compared to in that other Mario racing game in 1997, Mario Kart 64)
Mario Kart 64 is always the best single player experience for me. I won't argue it's the best in the series, DD is more interesting with worse driving mechanics, DS started the retro track tradition and has an awesome mission mode, Wii is great for the amount of default tracks, addition of bikes, and most importantly nowadays the thousand or more custom tracks available, and 8 really blows everything out of the water after you get adjusted to its controls, but the rubber band AI is actually the unsung hero IMO for MK64. The CPU never uses red or blue shells (not sure why Jirard was commenting on that, must have just misremembered from VS mode) so there's hardly any BS luck involved in single player races (which is a very good thing), and unlike pretty much every other iteration succeeding it, the rubber banding actually gives you a challenge no matter how skilled you become at it (although there does seem to be some bug where the CPU in 1st can get a breakaway and you're unable to catch them for the remainder of the race). The driving mechanics IMO are the best in the entire series. In 150 you move lightning quick, and your hopping ability and drift just seem to perfectly mold together to create the best sense of control and speed the game has seen to date. It's definitely not perfect, and I can't see anyone really placing it above 8 Deluxe, but for my money it has the best original 16 tracks in the series, best control and speed, and having an actually challenging single player mode still keeps it a close 2nd in my Mario Kart heart.
spoken like a true MK fan and player... I also placed MK64 in 2nd based on it's non rubberbanding mechanics that allow players in single player mode with no/ much less skill actually see that it's more so about their actual kart driving skills rather than reliance on items that dictate the race. I hate the fact that the new games, are made so that almost anyone can go from 8th to 2nd or 1st in an instant in the final lap because the AI is often shooting each other as well.
@@antoniobarrera1983 If you like racing games, specifically kart racers, you owe it to yourself to play this (then play double dash, cause why not?). You just need to learn how drifting feels and you're good to go!

One of my favorite moments in Mario Kart was when I outran the blue shell. It was on the wii, and someone shot the blue shell at me. Hey Jirard, even though I have watched over 100 of your videos already, I need to say this was one of your funniest videos you have ever made. The humour was so funny, cool and elegantly put in without looking like you forced it to be happy.
While Mario Kart never really needed a story mode, I feel like it wouldn't hurt to have one in the next game. It worked for Mario Tennis Aces, and considering the Japanese adverts for Mario Kart back in the day, it would be an entirely sensible thing to give the next Mario Kart a story mode that makes you feel like you're playing through one of the chapters of Initial D, complete with Waluigi wondering how Luigi can drift with such skill, and all the while backed up by a soundtrack that puts an Initial D spin on all of the classic Mario Kart music. Basically, Mario Kart Initial D would be amazing. Also, as for who my Wario would be, I think Danny DeVito would be a strong candidate, even if he channels Frank Reynolds in the process. Which actually, when I think about it, would still be a 100% result. Just imagine Danny in a Wario costume. IMAGINE IT. *TaStE iT iN yOuR bRaIn DaMn YoU*
Great video! MK64 has had a special place in my heart since childhood, when I had friends down to my basement for multiplayer mode. I totally get many of your criticisms, some I thought were too harsh. I appreciate your love for the genre and the series. It really shines through on this video! One thing I like about this one is the game physics. The physics in MK64 feel way different than the following sequels to me. MK64 actually feels like you’re driving in open space, while other titles like MKWii and MK8 feel like there’s a rope pulling you through the courses. The game seems to be helping you steer, and somehow guiding your driving. A good example of this is falling off cliffs more or getting stuck in a corner on a right angle turn in Bower’s Castle. These things don’t seem to happen as often in the other games because of the physics difference. As frustrating as these can be, I make the argument that this is the element which makes MK64 a superior game to the others. MK64 does a better job than the others of rewarding experienced players who take the time to know the courses and know when to start your power sliding early or cut a corner with a hop over a gap in the road. Even repeated power slide boosts seem to give a player more of an advantage than other games. All these factors make me feel like I can actually use skill to gain an edge in the race rather than relying on the randomness of an item box snatching victory away from an otherwise perfect race. I’m not sure if I’m being clear on this. But that’s why, even with its flaws, it’s still my fav.
Wooooo!love you're stuff it's so great and I haven't found anyone else like you on UA-cam. My favourite video(even though they are all amazing) are the lego ones and I was wondering could you please cover another one as it's so interesting finding out what creators love to add for 100% completionists and lego games are a place to find that.
This episode really reminded me of the good ol fashioned original Completionist episodes! The bit with the car was so funny and really reminded me of the comedy stuff from some of the early Completionist stuff (like the Pokemon rby episode!). Thanks again everyone and keep it up!
That was pretty good. Last time I played MK64, I felt like it had aged like milk. Perhaps I didn't give it enough of a chance to get used to the controls, but when you get hurt, it's such a huge setback since you fly so high into the sky and have to wait so long. That being said, it's Mario Kart. You're always having a good time regardless of age :D

Mario Kart 64 was my childhood and even now since im older i still enjoy playing this video game lol. Hopefully im not biased towards this game and blinded towards nostalgia but out of every mario kart game mario kart 64 is my personal favorite! Good job on this Review!
I've completed this game so many times as a child. This was definitely one of the best Mario Kart games ever! I just wish the rubber band A.I wasn't so aggressive.
The amount of Wario love in this episode made this trollfacing Wario smile. Well, more than usual. I recommend completing Wario World next. If only because it has my favourite Wario line: "I'm a numbar one!". Warning: This trollfacing Wario is not responsible for any punches, shoulder bashes, piledrivers and buttstomps made to people after playing Wario world.
I still play Mario Kart 64 like it's any other game, it's still a beautiful game and not just because of nostalgia. It's just as intense as it once was, and the skill is just as needed.
I remember playing this with my friend when I was in elementary/middle school. (I definately remember the graphics now) It was so fun! I miss those days. I think he had GoldenEye as well.
I loved this game so much that at one point I created my own GP for it. I’m time trial I did ten laps with each character on a track then whoever had the lowest total time would be a the winner for that track, second lowest would be second etc. 1st would get 10pts 2nd 6pts 3rd 3pts 4th 2pts 5th 1pts I did this for every single track on every course, I’ve always liked the heavier characters like Bowser and Donkey Kong but the winner of the whole thing ended up being Yoshi
This is my favorite Mario Kart game. It has one of the very best battle modes ever Made. I still play multiplayer with other people alot because just like goldeneye it stays timeless. This is one of your best video’s
Still one of the greatest Mario Karts of all-time. If Deluxe 8 is 1st, I'd actually rank this one in 2nd place & then the classic SNES Mario Kart in 3rd over both the Nintendo Wii & Game cube version.
Mario Kart 64...Donkey Kong noises are the ABSOLUTE GOD-KING!!! No joke, I want more like that...and also, the sound DK makes when spinning out is an ALL TIME FAVORITE of mine!
I remember spending countless hours just messing around in this game. My little brother and I would just roll around in stages seraching for secrets and perfecting the skill of jumping tracks in Rainbow Road. We also found that you can throw bananas at people on other parts of the track by throwing them over the edge.
You accidentally hit someone with your car, that person is now dead. What do you do with the body? A: Ignore it, nobody will know it was you anyway. B: Check if he is still alive & call for help. C: QUICK! HIDE THE BODY! D: Wear some gloves, find a random object in the parking lot that you would normally find on someone’s person and plant it on the body without anyone noticing.
I have so much nostalgia for Mario Kart 64 and think it still holds up in many ways, but I can't deny that any time I play it (or Super Mario Kart) for a while, I want to go back to 8 Deluxe. The biggest thing is that I don't have a CRT anymore (no place to put one at the moment) and short of modding the N64, that's the best way to play it.
Haha the funnest thing me and my buddies would do as a kid would hit up the 3 big boys, drive backwards on Choco Mountain on 150 cc and just get them stars and nail everyone. It's SO satisfying to watch them pinball all over the mountainside, Toad AAAAAHHHing as his body would slowly tumble downards from glitching out on the sidewalls. It was just so much fun!
Mario Kart 64 is my favourite Mario Kart to this day. It's partly nostalgia, and partly because it's the only one I know how to play...kids these days with their new-fangled features like drift-dashing, wheelies, and double-dashing...
The reason this one is the best for me is because I actually had friends who would come over to play it 4 player regularly. I haven't had that since and Mario Kart just isn't much fun without 3 other people all playing together in the same room, at least not after completing all the Grand Prix races once each on 150 CC. You can argue that online play saves the newer ones but I really don't like playing with strangers. Knowing the people and being able to talk about it anytime I want afterwards or being able to play differently based on what I know about them makes a huge difference. Back in the day I could look at my friends before the match and know right away if any of them were thinking about taking one of the incredibly cheap shortcuts or not. We all knew how to do them but hadn't really mastered the really tricky unintentional ones like jumping through the wall on the DK level so if someone was planning to try it I could gamble on; Will I make it if I try? Will they make it fast enough to matter? Stuff like that. Or you see someone holding into a lightning bolt on a level with a jump that sets you way back in the race if they use it while you're on the booster like in Wario Stadium and you have to trick them into using it early or distract them as you take the jump. You just can't do that with online play.
I've actually completed this game myself. I can respect the fact that people think that this game has not aged well but its still an important game for the N64 and for the Mario Kart series as a whole. It's always been one of those games that will always be hooked up and ready to go at gaming conventions. In my eyes its a timeless classic despite the game's age, the nostalgia for this game will always be strong.
Bradley wanted us to tell you all, that he's gone on a very long vacation to find himself.

I swear that Jirard is teasing Shovel Knight and that makes me happy
"Oh, hey, my wallet!"
XD loved the callback!!!
The little E's that pop when you are drifting are one of my favorite small details in games.
COMPLETE Spongebob Squarepants *Battle for Bikini Bottom*
I loved this game so much that at one point I created my own GP for it.
I’m time trial I did ten laps with each character on a track then whoever had the lowest total time would be a the winner for that track, second lowest would be second etc.
1st would get 10pts
2nd 6pts
3rd 3pts
4th 2pts
5th 1pts
I did this for every single track on every course, I’ve always liked the heavier characters like Bowser and Donkey Kong but the winner of the whole thing ended up being Yoshi
You should of did diddy Kong racing, much more fun to complete
This is my favorite Mario Kart game. It has one of the very best battle modes ever Made. I still play multiplayer with other people alot because just like goldeneye it stays timeless. This is one of your best video’s
“Imma gonna wiiiiiiinn” “wah”
Still one of the greatest Mario Karts of all-time. If Deluxe 8 is 1st, I'd actually rank this one in 2nd place & then the classic SNES Mario Kart in 3rd over both the Nintendo Wii & Game cube version.
"Hey, my wallet!"
i'm dying over here
Mario Kart 64...Donkey Kong noises are the ABSOLUTE GOD-KING!!! No joke, I want more like that...and also, the sound DK makes when spinning out is an ALL TIME FAVORITE of mine!
My first video game ever
Awesome video. This takes me back quite a few years, but I played more of this than anything on the n64.
bowser: get outta my way son

Loved this game as a kid. Nice seeing it covered here.

Ha! That callback to animal crossing defend it verdict. Great!
Wow Mario 64 can completed?
Gilberto Cortez it takes about 120 stars.
Mario Kart 64 is my favourite Mario Kart to this day. It's partly nostalgia, and partly because it's the only one I know how to play...kids these days with their new-fangled features like drift-dashing, wheelies, and double-dashing...
How do you complete Mario Kart 64?
*Sees video*
Oh never mind.
S.E.G. Reviews I've yet to finish the video but finish GP on all CCs and best all time trials I'd say that's completion by my standards
S.E.G. Reviews I still wouldn’t consider a game that you would “complete”.
"It's like going through four years of college and all I got to show for it was a... piece of paper..." I laughed out loud for real at that one.
When's F-Zero GX? 👀
8:50 Gotta love how DK passes you as soon as you say that.
"Fella you mean Donkey Kong."
*I prefer Crash Team Racing* ....
FIGHT MEH!
I have the rainbow road theme from this game as my ringtone. It's as awesome as it sounds
Wait was that idubbbz I not the only one right
Faith Isn’t full
* grabs popcorn *
? Haven’t watched it fully but what.
Karen Riley in the intro. Idubbz gets hit by a car.
that's actually the penut butter gamer
Ooh I love the Princess Peach pooting every time she threw a banana!
Super Mario Kart is still the best Mario Kart.
Mario kart advance was awesome
Ctr is way better though
This will always be my favorite Mario Kart.
Did you make this because of the normal boots videos on n64 games?

NotSoCrazyCrackerGaming What About Me?
NotSoCrazyCrackerGaming And Him
The reason this one is the best for me is because I actually had friends who would come over to play it 4 player regularly.
F-Zero Snes forever!
and omg there is NO such thing as "Hate Speech" only Free Speech.
The Supreme Court confirmed it unanimously.
Your opening jokes are getting better and better. Not to mention the IRL sketches you guys have been making. Top quality content.
This may be the only game in the world I feel like I would have a chance in beating you at. I love this game. Thank you for covering it.
