- The Holy Grail? Who needs that when you have an NWC Cart?
In 1990 Nintendo sponsored a video game tournament called The Nintendo World Championships the tournament was based on the movie The Wizard and was part of a huge festival called Powerfest which toured twenty-nine cities across the US.
The Nintendo World Championship Cartridge was made up of three NES Games these games were Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris and used a point scoring system to determine the winner.
The tournament finalists each got to keep their own copy of the game which was a Gray cart with a white label however there exists a Gold version which were given away as prizes in The Nintendo Power Magazine only 26 of these games were ever made.
Now the Nerd must tackle what has come to be known as the Holy Grail of NES collecting has he found a real NWC Cart or will it remain forever out of his reach. This is AVGN episode 104.

AVGN has some of the best rewatch value on the internet. I tried to rewatch some Nostalgia Critic again, but I personally think that his videos have not aged as well. I got annoyed with him after just one video, and I used to watch him all the time. Nobody shits on James Rolfe when it comes to longevity and quality on youtube.

In a way, the nerd is actually the voice of reason in this video, taking it to the extreme, sure, but he also emphasizes how the whole game collection movement has become so bloated and absurd in some ways.

I just looked (December 2022) and that gold cart is listed on eBay for two million dollars. There is no way that the true value
It was confirmed in a BTS video that the cartridges destroyed were actually just Legend of Zelda and Top Gun carts in disguise, but wouldn't that be a great legacy? One of the most rare, elusive NES games in history, very few cartridges in existence, and the Angry Video Game Nerd would go down in history as the man who destroyed one of each kind. It would be quite poetic.

Despite him being in character as the Nerd, you could argue that this was where Rolfe realized there was a limit to game collecting. That's probably why he used the SNES Classic to review Earthbound.
While the Earthbound cart isn't half as costly as NWC (gold OR grey), sometimes, the huge amount of money just ain't worth it sometimes.
I used to own Earthbound in SNES back in 2005 or something.. didn't know it was a big deal. game was awesome, but would kill-glitch in the same spot everytime

@Poopy Earthbound is hardly considered a classic because it bombed so hard in sales and very rare veterans actually played the game legit.
The weird thing is Earthbound isn't actually rare, but it's sought-after. Like my local retro game shop has something like 7 loose-cart copies of Earthbound in their case, but they're asking $90 (canadian) per copy.
Of course, they also have a complete-in-box copy of the version that came with the strategy guide, and they're asking $700 for that

I really love the message the Nerd puts out at the very end when it shows him and Pat with their respective copies. Never let greed or jealousy get in the way of friendship.

There's also a great implied backstory here. That James actually bought this box and was so excited, he just had to call his friend so they could make a video together about it.

I feel like this is the very last nostalgic AVGN episode due to the fact it still uses that old standard vision camera recording the episode in 480p. It gave a nostalgic atmosphere that we've all been used to in all the old AVGN episodes and it gave a certain charm to it especially since they were about retro games.
It feels like a new era now since episode 105 when he started recording in HD and now AVGN has a more modern charm to it and hopefully he'll start reviewing some more modern shitty games from the PS2, Xbox and Game-cube generation, mixed in with his retro game episodes.
In my opinion, this episode was toward the end of the transition period. Which started around Lester the Unlikely or Day Dreaming Davey and ended right before "Schwarzenegger Games". The tone started to shift, as well as the equipment, the nerd's delivery, the sound, etc.

English muffins aren't a dessert, they're kinda like a ball of bread-like dough that you cut in half and put each side in the toaster, then you butter it usually. Maybe it's just because I am English, but I personally don't like that they're called English muffins, I just call them bread muffins.
