So, if you are just looking for the gear, and/or money which mind you with the scrapper perk you can get a lot of good materials from them I advise setting up a bunch of missile turrets to blast them out of existence. This will also net you a lot of ammo of various kinds as well which can be quite useful. I personally like to have such farms set up for as many different creatures as possible in order to keep a consistent supply of certain food items and materials.
If you dont care about exp just build it in grey garden overpass and let gravity do the killing gor you

Just discovered your channel, subbed for these tips. The gunner farm is something I do with my playthroughs. A couple tips:
First, I saw someone else mention use of artillery, which does give exp as well. Artillery also benefits from demolition perk, so you can usually kill all with one artillery grenade.
Second, I have a high Int build, but also have all 3 Idiot Savant perks. With high Int, it's hard to trigger the idiot savant perk. My work around is to open building mode prior to starting the trap and spam build shelves, shown if your first video. After a hundred or so shelves, idiot savant procs, giving all kills from your trap 3x experience.
I love the efficiency aspect, these can make the trap safe and 3 times as efficient!
I would like to test out the artillery. My assumption was you can't use artillery on your own settlement.
Spray ‘n Pray is all you’ll need. Max Demolition, Commando, Steady Aim, and anything else to increase damage. To increase the XP, max Idiot Savant, use many chems for increased damage and defense, with the side benefit of max dehydration to drop INT to 1, making Savant easier to trigger. Craft noodle cups or something else simple at chem or stove workstations until Savant triggers, dose mentats + berry mentats to push up INT, add squirrel stew for added XP, completely rehydrate, and go killing.
I've been looking forward to seeing how you set this one up. I'm very much enjoying this series.
Your original gunner trap video was what got me to sub months ago
i have done this in the past and i found that the kiloton rifle or spray and pray work just fine for killing the gunners in those long hallways
but the biggest thing i figured out is that if u put a conveyor belt at the bottom of the hallways not only will the drops come to u making it easier to pick up everything but also u can cover the top with a painting and while standing on the floor u can see the gunners feet but they cant really see u at all so with that set up there is almost no risk of dying (if an enemy is at the far end of the hallway and u are close to the opening on it they can get an angle on u)
The conveyer belt is brilliant, haha.

The best xp farm now is the cc settlement defense. Take it to Red Rocket in Nuka World, which only has 1 spawn point and you can farm xp like crazy. Fast travel to Evans or Nuka Market. Then repeat. It's fast and legit.
Feel free to test and make video about it. It's insane, sleep berry mentats and squirrel stew.
You can also build walls around the spawn point to keep them isolated to that area.
Quincy stopped respawnig, didn't know what to do. That's fucking brilliant!

I know I’m late but a good thing to keep in mind is when the trap I full with gunners you are more likely to be attack by gunners so if you want you can simply set it all up but don’t power the cages until you are ready

I have 100 cages that open into a large area inside concrete walls. Basically build a large square and then line the inner walls with cages stacked 3 high. Then I throw a switch and have a pitching machine launch a flare inside the middle and wait for the minuteman artillery shells to kill them all while I just sit back and watch from a safe distance.
do you get exp from that ?
Spectacle island is the best spot for a large gunner farm. Make it a more open area with walls, put a fence around it to prevent your settlers from getting fragged, open cages and toss an artillery grenade in there. Literally no ammo and no risk. All XP and loot.
I have 3 farms, Abernathy Farm, The Drive-in and Spectacle, Spectacle is most efficient. The other 2 have heavy lasers and missile launchers, as long as you damage them with a grenade or something first you'll get the XP, but you'll most likely have to repair a few of the turrets.
I like to dress my settlers in army fatigues and helmets so this farm is really cool.
I prefer to have each cage wired in parallel, so i can kill one gunner at a time with an instigating melee. This method is fast and safe, while costing no ammo, AND you can simply hit the door of the cage to open it. Combined with idiot savant rank 3, you can get an insane amount of xp very fast on survival with no risk of death.
I always lay mines before I release the gunners in my trap base. However, because I use mines, I have to place roofs over the killzone so that dead bodies won't get yeeted to outer space by the blasts.

As great as explosive mini gun is, I feel like aeturnus is also a great weapon for a farm like this
7:52 do you happen to have the full original stream of you making a building process of this? Because I see a lot of cuts, and as someone who’s not experienced with the Contraptions DLC I might have trouble replicating your build 😭
Also, how did you manage to move the whole facility?
Hold down select in build mode and it selects everything close together as one item.
I am trying something similar. I wondered; "If you mix raider and gunner cages what would they do?" Today I'll find out if they attack each other! Since I could wait forever for an explosive minigun or Gatling laser I will use Spray and Pray.
What level Gunners come out? Does it scale with your own level, or does it depend on map location?
This is a very appealing idea to me, because I like to outfit all my settlers with Gunner armor.
As a melee build, I would probably try to build a murder nook where I could safely chop at their ankles or something.
I once used Spray & Pray on a room full of trapped ghouls in that church out in the Glowing Sea. Brutal. The church floor was like a hearty stew of fully separated ghoul body parts.

Whoa, the classic technique of holding an item and then stealing it after you're nice and alone with it, still works? l remember new vegas with the gun store, moving all weapons outside of their line of sight and then stealing them, hilarious!

All you have to do with any cage structure is build a pit like you did then rain down Hell from above. What I did is get max rank for Explosive perk and then use the Fat man that lobbs 2 nuke instead of 1 per shot. If you wish to gain further xp then cook squirrel stem and use a drug that increases overall damage. Also, exuberant video!!
You can also save space by just building an elevator as well instead of the 48 staircases. Also if you utilize the 3rd rank of Idiot Savant then the Exp gained will be crawling out of your ass!! Promise ya
One way of killing the Raiders without ever taking a hit, is to use grenades. Duck out of the way, and lob them toward the hole. Might take a few to get them all, but grenades are much easier to obtain than mini-nukes, and you don't present a target.

biggest Setup i had was a 9x40 / 360 Cages, is slightly laggy tho. would not recomment 200ish Cages is where i would stop next Time :)

Is it possible to release the gunners on conveyor belts, so you can make a long smal hall and they get transportet to the starting point. If that works, you could drop them stage by stage so they dont get killed and collect them in a hole to kill them

I'm running into a problem with this design. I've built it over the water at spectacle island but I'm not doing damage or receiving any, is my game bugged or is there anything I can do to correct this?
I ran into the same problem. I saw a reddit post describing a similar issue and found solution they provide of restarting the game works. While not ideal, it's led me down the path of min-maxing my gunner XP farm to minimize the number of times I gotta do this till I hit Lvl 272

Spray n Pray is a great explosive sub machine sold by Cricket that would work if you don’t have a mini gun
Top tier bro, liked and subbed. Builds nowhere near as good as yours but basic idea. 88 cages, 3 layers, water below. See hoe it works. This costs a pretty penny

Nice gunner tower, that's the way. You can send eyebots to find mininukes if you need ammo, gotta build my tower like yours because mine was also Spectacle Island but 28-29 gunner cages per level and 8 levels high so after killing them all the game physics is broken have to reset lmao. Even at level 180+ When I do that one it levels me up about 5 times still lol..
Isn't it super annoying to repair always ?
I honestly don't bother with normal settlements, and basically use robots for everything except for merchants.

If i have more than around 8 cages, the gunners just despawn when leaving the cages. What causes this?

With the infinite resources glitch you could just make a ton of grenades and just crouch and chuck them
Can you use this to farm "legendary" gunners?
They dont come from the cages, but sometimes they attack your settlement with the gunner trap and include legendary enemies
Playing on xbox. Noticed even though it says 50 caps to set up the cage again, they only cost 5. Can anyone confirm on another console.
I built mine at egret tours, above the water. Managed 78 cages above the water. Once they drop in the water, they cant shoot. Just make sure you have a floor with walls at the bottom, or the bodies float away.
Could probably set up another ~ 80 on the other side, run 2 semi separate farms. Squirrel stew/berry mentats/idiot savant/lovers embrace works quite well.
And then you can make your intelligence to 82 and you can probably get at the very least 10 levels

Does somebody know how he does the wiring for the trap to open? Genuine confused on how its works
The way I did it, and I assume how he did, was wire all the cages together, then connect one of them to a power switch, then connect your power source to the switch and not the cages directly. This gets power to the cages but it's all reliant on the switch. You pull the switch, it cuts power, it opens the cages! Just remember to turn the power back on when your done!
bottlecap mine is a batter choice, and idiot servant 3 can triple your XP. Just trigger it before open the cages by cooking or building

You can build the cages in any version I think or its the contraptions dlc

Legendary gunners never spawn on cages
Cages do encourage gunner attacks on your settlement, which sometimes includes legendary gunners.

I'm doing something like this with 40 cages but for this playthrough I am only allowed to use non-automatic guns and rifles so it's a bit more difficult.
