  • General Russel Honore,' a decorated Army Veteran of over 37 years, best known for being the Commander of Joint Task Force Katrina, was a major force in rescuing New Orleans during its darkest hours following Hurricane Katrina. While America watched in horror, on nation-wide television as beaten, sick and dying New Orleanians were huddled in front of the Convention Center, being surrounded by armed and ready for combat militias, General Honore' famously shouted..." Put down those God Damn guns! This is a rescue mission!" In that moment all who watched knew there was finally some hope in this seemingly unrecoverable disaster. His heroic role in this and numerous other world-changing events is proof that HBCUs have produced some of America's greatest leaders.
This address delivered at SUNO in 2015 to Deans from a number of HBCUs is an impressive demonstration of General Honore's leadership and profound knowledge on Climate Change, technology and a host of other vital topics of our times; delivered over seven years ago, its message is right on time for today's audiences....
