    Ingredients:
    For the oat crust:
    2 cups (180g) Rolled oats
    1 cup (125g) All-purpose flour
3/4 cup (150g) Light brown sugar
3/4 cup (170g) Softened Butter, cubed
    1/2 teaspoon Ground cinnamon (optional)
    1/4 teaspoon Salt
    1/2 teaspoon Baking soda
    For the date filling:
    400g (14.1oz) Medjool dates, pitted
    1 cup (240ml) Water
    1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
    1 tablespoon Lemon juice
    Directions:
    1. Place dates, water and lemon juice in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the dates are soft. Remove from heat and add vanilla extract. Let cool to room temperature.
    2. Preheat oven to 350F (175C). Line a 9-inch (23cm) square baking pan with a strip of parchment paper. Set aside.
    3. Make the crust: In a large bowl, combine oats, flour, salt, brown sugar and baking soda. Add the butter and mix until crumbly.
    4. Press 2/3 of the mixture into the bottom of the baking pan. Spread the filling over the base, Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture.
    5. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool completely, then refrigerate for at least one hour before cutting into squares.

I'm 74 years old and I still say my grandmother always made the best date squares ever!! She made them for all occasions and school events. I would eat a few from the tin on my way to school. Your recipe looked very close to hers, I'll give it a try. Thank You so much !!

In my first job as a trainee newspaper reporter, I would buy these date bars from the local sandwich shop where I got my lunch each day. I never had them before, and have never seen them anywhere since, but they were delicious!
All I knew was they had a sweet, soft date centre, and that unique, crumble/oaty topping. I looked up 'date bars' on UA-cam in hopes of finding a recipe, and this is the best one by far!
What joy to see the exact treats I enjoyed all those years ago, but have bizarrely never found anywhere since. I will be making these this week - another recipe I watched used a food processor to mix up the flour, oat and sugar combo, and also to puree the dates - both steps totally unnecessary! All the oat mixture needs is a quick stir - and the dates are perfectly mushy and need no additional pureeing, after they've been cooked in water!
This recipe keeps it simple, and the end result looks exactly like those delicious date bars I remember so well. Thanks so much for sharing!

Made this awesome recipe like a dozen times. Best ones were using weight measurements for sure, the crumble turns out crumblier. Friends are now asking me to bake some them. One day I used frozen cranberries, rolled in some sugar, not cooked. Wow!

Fantastic recipe, thank you! I couldn't believe how many recipes call for brown sugar in both the date mixture and the dry mixture which sounds incredibly sweet. Why add more sugar when dates are a sugar substitute, LOL!! Your recipe has such a perfect level of sweetness and these are the best date squares I've ever had.

For those who don't like too sweet, need to reduce the amount of dates and brown sugar.
Because it gonna be sweet, very
You can store it in the fridge, and take 1 bar for your breakfast. Store it well, so you can eat it whenever you want.
