French Cleat Shop Wall - The Cleatification Continues
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 січ 2021
- We converted our last ugly wall to French cleats and now everything is much better. Our French cleat walls have allowed us to place our tools and supplies right where they will be used, and we can move things around the shop easily and without tools.
French cleats are an easy and cheap way to organize your wood shop. If you don't have them you should build some. You won't believe how you lived without them if you do!

Love your sense of humor.
Thank you! I try to make things fun!
I was stationed at NAS Lemoore in the 90s and remember doing the X-rays on the vertical stabs on the Blue Angles got a signed group photo and award
Very cool. My father is a plankowner for VA-27, which first flew from Lemoore a very long time ago. I remember going to the field as a tiny little kid and sitting in that A-7A cockpit at Lemoore!
I like the door, good use of a other wise lost area of your shop.
Thanks 👍 We'll hang lightweight stuff on it but expect it to be pretty useful storage space.
Lotsa ideas here. Thank you!
You're so welcome!
Happy Birthday Chuck! You are an inspiration of creativity and engineering. I’ve enjoyed watching your channel grow from a idea to reality. I can’t wait to continue to watch you and Hannah build more Dinos
Thank you very much! And we definitely have more dinos in our future!!!
This makes me want to redo my french cleat wall and put my cleats closer together. Those storage bins look like a good solution too. Great video.
Thank you! The closely-spaced rails have worked well for us because they give us more options for shelf placement. We really like the things you've built for your French cleats. Well done!
Great idea for using the door space! Thanks
Glad you like it! It works well for us!
Looks great. I Have been wanting some of those bins from Harbor Freight and now that I finally have one in my town going to pick up a bunch and thanks for the great idea to hang them on a french cleat.
Those bins are great, cheap, and you can expand your storage just by clipping more on to the stack. One tip, I showed myself putting it up with only two screws because I didn't think everyone would want to watch me putting in more. But in reality there are six screws evenly spaced across the back of that stack of bins.
I love your channel, I especially love that you work with your daughter. I did the same with my dad and its great to know there are others.
Thank you so much! We have a great time building stuff, and she's in college to be an engineer!
@@AtomicDairy I know I became an engineer also
Nice video. Our garage came with two full walls of peg boards. I've learned to loathe peg boards. : ) Yes to french cleats! Awesome organizing solutions! Mahalo for sharing! : )
Thank you! We have exactly the same opinion and have only one pegboard wall left to replace with cleats.
Happy Birthday and Happy Thanksgiving, Chuck!! Hope you’ve had a great day. I didn’t know anything about French cleats but now I know a little more!
Thank you! Glad you like the projects!
You guys are awesome.
Why thank you!!!
Awesome!
Thanks!
Love the safety cranial!
It does the job very well and is surprisingly comfortable! Also Go Navy!
@@AtomicDairy - I wish I still had mine! it would be green though.
Thanks, I also like the tape measure holder next to it.
Glad it was helpful! The tape measure holder is also new and is made of scraps. I'm thinking of making a larger tape measure/speed square holder so all that stuff is in one place.
Thanks.
You're welcome!
I recently went to Harbor Freight and looked at those organizers, but passed on them thinking how would I ever use them? I will be making a trip back to Harbor Freight. Thanks for your great ideas,
Glad I could help! Those little boxes are extremely useful for us!
Like the colors but you probably should have mentioned that people should pre-drill the holes after you split the wood with the first screw
Good point! And I did that on the others. Lesson learned.
Sub! I have a very small shop and floor space is a must! Great video. Thank you for the content.
Thanks for the sub! We're still making new tool holders and the shop is getting more and more organized. Definitely French cleat your shop. It's a game changer!
Glad I found your channel. Good ideas! What thickness plywood are ya using on walls?
We use quarter inch. It's just there to protect the wall because the cleats are screwed into the studs.
Great looking wall and super useful. Definitely be doing this. Would it be more practical to have a tray for your tape and other items on the metal poles? This would alleviate the need to remove all items to get to the tape at the very back?
A tray would work but we never know how many rolls of tape we are going to have, so the tray would always be too large or small. At least that's how we saw it.
Great job I just wish I had watched your video first as I already hung my cat on a cleat.before you all go screaming at me it is a picture of my cat .great workman's I like your humour.
Ha! Thank you! Glad you liked our weirdness! And cleats.
What size cleats did u use, 1.5???
How far did u space then apart?
The cleats are 1x3 boards we cut down the center at a 45-degree angle. That makes them about 1.75" on the long side. They are narrow but we screw them into every stud and they have had zero problems holding up our tools. We space them 3" apart.
Why put on a backer board? Aren't the studs enough?
Yes, we could have built with just the studs but we wanted to cover the sheet rock. We did this because we wanted to add color and because we wanted something more rugged than sheet rock.
@@AtomicDairy I'm doing my french cleat wall in the next week or so. Because plywood is so expensive now, I am going to use a 1/8" hard board and paint it. It's only about $6 for a 4x8 sheet. I just recently found your channel and really enjoy the humor. I noticed you have a Navy influence so I assume you are a Navy veteran. Thank you for your service. I retired from the Air Force 25 years ago and retired for good two months ago. Looking forward to more of your videos!
@@roberthutcheson2485 I am just getting ready to start mine and 4x8 birch plywood is now running about $85/sheet for 1/2 thick.
What is the
spacing between cleats?
We space our cleats 2.75 inches.
Atomic Dairy Thanks
Were your 1 x 3 boards true 1 x 3 or were they 3/4 x 2 1/2 boards?
Good question. They were hardware store 1 x 3 boards, which means the not really 1 x 3 boards that are 3/4 x 2 1/2.
@@AtomicDairy Thanks! That's good to know. I just bought a big bunch of them then realized the true size and thought I had screwed up. Pressing on!!!!
@@roberthutcheson2485 your dimensional lumber will always be smaller. The sizes are nominal.
why is youtube channel called Atomic Diary
It's just a silly name that doesn't mean anything, which allows us to build anything we want without being typecast!
Hilarious sound effects....
Thanks for noticing! The sound effects really make things more fun!
