I forgot to mention! In case you didn't realise, it also replaces the outdated power management on the GBC/Pocket. So things like a flash cart and an IPS will be no issue in a Pocket
I found your channel through your PoCo mod and hella glad because it also led me to this awesome kit of yours! Just spent the evening installing it on my GBC, and it works amazing! Thank you for all you do!
Successfully installed the LED board from your shop last night. It’s my first soldering project outside of bridging fuses and I nearly flubbed it but she’s all done thanks to your help!!!
@@NatalietheNerd I’m sure it’s something I can fix with a little more prodding, but the board flickers when I press on the d-pad. Issue with the power supply wire you think?
hearing you mentioning FPV drones prior to modding gameboys felt validating because I did the same thing. went from FPV drones and Tiny Whoops, to gameboy modding. this and previous videos of yours are incredible sources of information! thank you ^-^
So so so cool gonna use it for a pocket but def will add this to a gbc at some point too, love how good these gb community mods have been for an excuse to practice soldering.
This is great! I am curious about the LED on the board in opaque shells where you can't see if it's lit or not and thus not know if it's done charging or not. How complex would it be to have the board use the console's power LED and, for example, blink when it's charging, stay solid when the console is on but not charging, and turn off when the console is off?
I'm gonna attempt to wire up the led pads to the oem power location my next install did u end up giving that a try yet? I was thinking abt replacing the oem light with a similar smaller green led and cramming them next to each other should be easy to tell what's charging vs default power light that way
Thank you for designing this! Will you be releasing the gerber files? or even sell them? I plan on purchasing the board but wanted to ask since I might want one for my pocket down the road
Do we need to remove the F2 fuse on the GBC if we're doing the USB install? It's not mentioned in the written guide, and this will be my first mod, so not experienced enough to know.
Installed this and it's great, love the fact the green one is similar to the standard power management board, so to the untrained eye it looks standard. I will say, charging with the DC jack, I get a LOT of fuzzy noise out of the speaker while the GBC is powered on, even with the volume all the way down. Is this a problem like old caps or is it normal? Annoying the lipo I got had really short wires so I had to extend them which was a pain.
Potentially I'd like to test it to be sure. The problem with the original amp is it's wired directly to the battery voltage as input and as the battery is charging this voltage wouldn't be stable and would create a lot of noise. Cleaning the headphone jack and a new volume wheel could potentially help too if there is noise when the volume is down
Also also could I wire up an led to the pads where the safer charge charging indicator is and route them to an led where the power led is ? Like would it work fine relocated or would that not be worth doing? If it would work I'd love to give it a go just for a little extra personalization/my led-less junk pockets
I dont quite understand how you're soldering the battery to the board. Are you soldering a socket to the board and then plugging it in? Are you able to make a video demonstrating how you're soldering the battery? Sorry, im new to this and i purchased three of your boards so i can update my family's GBCs.
Would this board work for the first gen pockets? I used another brand for mine and it wasn’t “made” for it so I switched to the cheaper one like you pictured. I have it separate from the lipo though with no problems so far.
Interesting I've always wondered about this and why some mods are more safe then others. Great video! Now with the higher quality chips installed any idea on the heat improvement on yours? As that was the original issue in the first place the heat being too close to the battery = boom lol.
It gets a little warm when you play and charge because there's 500-600ma running through the board, but it doesnt matter as much cause its no where near the lipo. and I mean at 8hrs battery life who needs to play and charge 😋
@@NatalietheNerd Good to know! Any idea on when the safer charge boards will be restocked? I was able to get a PoCO kit but missed out on the safer charge board.
Hi @NatalietheNerd! I'm so close to finishing my Poco but I'm having trouble getting it to boot. I'm using a LiPo battery and the safer charge board. With a Poco, I need to wire to the left side of the F1 fuse and the 5V from the safer charge to the USB C port?
I forgot to mention!

Can we use this on a GBA? If not, is there a way to adapt it? Thanks for your great work!

Looking forward to the restock this week; thabks for the detaild installation guides you've put up

Sounds like something is shorting. Send a pic of the install to Natalie@nataliethenerd.com so I can help out ☺️

I kinda miss my fpv goggles and tiny whoops
This is an awesome product! I really like this option for Lipo compared to others out there
I love that you can have it on while using it! That beats the heck out of funnyplaying rechargeable battery!
Glad to have had input on this and watch it develop :)
Awesome work! So excited for this

ur stuff and froggos has been been rlly great and accessible lots of love
I use LiPo AA's ;)
Truly a Legend in the retro modding scene!
I've just learned from everyone else who shares!

do you think you could make a dmg color?
Would you please make a video of installing this on a PoCo? I have a Bucket Mouse board and would love to add this mod to it.
Bucket Mouse has actually added a guide for it on his GitHub!
Yay, you used my Drake meme!! 💪 0:31

No, thats only if you want to use the DC Jack

Yeah, while charging and playing you will get static due to the way the stock amp is wired
@ would/ does the bucket amp improve it?
Potentially I'd like to test it to be sure. The problem with the original amp is it's wired directly to the battery voltage as input and as the battery is charging this voltage wouldn't be stable and would create a lot of noise. Oh and does anybody know if this board will allow brightness control through the contrast wheel on a pocket for use with the funnyplaying ips kit?

Sorry for the beginner questions lol no worries if u miss them ill post how it goes for anyone else
To answer my own question no it does not, but it's a very usable brightness I would guess 2 -3 steps down from max (compared to the gbc fp kit)

I'm soldering the wires of the batteries to the board
@@NatalietheNerd ah I see, so you're removing the connector entirely?
Yes, it sits more flush with the shell
@@NatalietheNerd awesome, thank you so much for your help and for designing the board!
When you say you can use AAs and AAAs with this, do you mean you can use rechargeable ones in it and it'll charge them?
No
Are you going to release these as gerbers or only as completed builds? Would love to make some!
I'm going to release the gerbers for the charge only boards at some point
Will there be a list of the IC's used on the shop page once you have it listed there?
Will do
did you forgot the start and select buttons at the end ? or it was just to show the mod working ? xD
May I ask where you go that tiny little soldering iron? It seems like something I'd like for my quick, tiny projects! Great video!
Miniware ts80p
@@NatalietheNerd thanks so much! :)
Does the kit give any kind of indication of low battery?
The power light on the game boy colour itself dims
@@NatalietheNerdgreat! I noticed that the tp4056 doesn't cause that to happen
Does it also reduce IPS screen noise?
Yes
Great videos mate, what gauge/gauges of wire are you typically using for these mods? Thanks!
Usually 38

Hi Natalie! I noticed you had a resistor soldered on near the USB-C port on the Pocket. Is that unrelated to this mod?
Those are called CC resistors which let you use a usb C to C cable

October 19th :)

hopefully your mod gets more widespread use than that generic boards
